  • WebApps tendency

    There is a strong tendency of making web apps and even seems that very soon a lot of features will be available online so that for every day use people will have all necessary software free online and they will not need to install any software locally. Only specific (professional) tools that usually people don’t use at home will not be available as a web app. So my question, how do you imagine selling software that was necessary for everyday use and was not free (seems they can't make money any more by selling their product – no need of those products). And what disadvantages have web apps, that is to say, what is bad to use software online compared with having the same software locally (please list)? Please do not consider this question not connected with programming, as I would like to have a little statistics from professional programmers who are aware from nowday’s tendency of software and programming.   • Finding App Id under .ipa or .app

    I'm building an application that search and recognizes any iPhone apps that user has in his/her computer. I would like to know a way to "extract" the id of the application from the .ipa file. I was trying to do the recognition using only the App File Name, but I discovered that the File Name is not the name of the app in Apple Store. Live Poker 6K Free by Zynga != Live Poker 3.7.ipa The id i'm talking about is the app id, like in, http://itunes.apple.com/app/live-poker-6k-free-by-zynga/id354901953?mt=8 the id is 354901953. Does any body has a clue how can I manage to find this information?

  • Map API with Building Elevation Data

    Hi! I'm looking for a map API where I can get detailed elevation for points. I'm not looking elevation differences for certain paths along roads on the map but actual building heights. Getting the the 3d meshes for buildings would also be fine since I can compute the height myself using that information. Does any of the map API's out there support giving out this kind of information? EDIT: Free API's are preferred but if that's not an option I'd like to hear about non free alternatives as well.

  • PhysX for massive performance via GPU ?

    I recently compared some of the physics engine out there for simulation and game development. Some are free, some are opensource, some are commercial (1 is even very commercial $$$$). Havok, Ode, Newton (aka oxNewton), Bullet, PhysX and "raw" build-in physics in some 3D engines. At some stage I came to conclusion or question: Why should I use anything but NVidia PhysX if I can make use of its amazing performance (if I need it) due to GPU processing ? With future NVidia cards I can expect further improvement independent of the regular CPU generation steps. The SDK is free and it is available for Linux as well. Of course it is a bit of vendor lock-in and it is not opensource. Whats your view or experience ? If you would start right now with development, would you agree with the above ? cheers

  • Android app (with felix) crashes with LinearAlloc exceeded capacity

    I am running apache felix and an osgi app on android (3.2). This works pretty well so far, but I have rather large chunks of data to load into the application (osgi bundles). The problem with that is that when I load the biggest chunk of data I get LinearAlloc exceeded capacity The error seems to come from LinearAlloc.c \#define DEFAULT_MAX_LENGTH (4*1024*1024) if (nextOffset > pHdr->mapLength) { /* * We don't have to abort here. We could fall back on the system * malloc(), and have our "free" call figure out what to do. I'm looking to get better insight on what causes this problem and how I might possibly be able to fix it. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Memory mapped files causes low physical memory

    I have a 2GB RAM and running a memory intensive application and going to low available physical memory state and system is not responding to user actions, like opening any application or menu invocation etc. How do I trigger or tell the system to swap the memory to pagefile and free physical memory? I'm using Windows XP. If I run the same application on 4GB RAM machine it is not the case, system response is good. After getting choked of available physical memory system automatically swaps to pagefile and free physical memory, not that bad as 2GB system. To overcome this problem (on 2GB machine) attempted to use memory mapped files for large dataset which are allocated by application. In this case virtual memory of the application(process) is fine but system cache is high and same problem as above that physical memory is less. Even though memory mapped file is not mapped to process virtual memory system cache is high. why???!!! :( Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • Which language/framework to use for this desktop internet application?

    I'd like to experiment with a new language/framework to work on some desktop tools for myself, which will do tasks related to internet services. I.e. i'd like to to monitor some of my servers for http or icmp response, also parse xml responses. I have experience with php, lua, mysql, and basic knowledge of java and c++. I'm also interested in exploring multithreading for this, background tasks and a responsive gui do need that as i have read. Being a private project, i certainly want to learn something new, but i don't have that much free time. The question for you would be which language and what framework to choose that could help me with this tasks: lightweight + fast gui (windows only would be ok, platform-independent even better) network/socket support, html module would be appreciated htmlview support xml "parsing" support (xpath or something like the phpish DOMDocument class) threading support Free software would be nice, but paying some bucks won't hurt me if it really helps the case.

    is there a project hosting for c# code and that has a simple to use visual studio plugin? does not need to be free. it does need to be private. should have a plugin or already by usable from within visual studio. something like a hosted team foundation server would be best, however i only found one and for $150 per user per month. a bit much, don't you think :P the problem with searching via google is that there is a lot of free project hostings for open source and can't seem to weed them out :( thnx a lot for any info

    I am looking for a WYSIWYG for XPS that will ouput the raw XAML. My intentions is use the tool for a way to quickly generate and test the XAML (of XPS documents) with the intention of then generating the same xaml in code and programmatically generating an XPS document.     I am encrypting a string in objective-c and also encrypting the same string in Java using AES and am seeing some strange issues. The first part of the result matches up to a certain point but then it is different, hence when i go to decode the result from Java onto the iPhone it cant decrypt it. I am using a source string of "Now then and what is this nonsense all about. Do you know?"     Hello, At moment my main layout consists of vertically oriented stack panel and it looks like this: Root StackPanel StackPanel - fixed Height 150 (horizontal orientation) StackPanel - relative Height must be behalf of free space left on screen (but at least 150 px). Used by Telerik GridView Control, if I don't specify Height or MaxHeight Telerik GridView Height becomes very large and does not fit my window. StackPanel - fixed Height 100 (horizontal orientation) StackPanel - relative Height must be half of free space left on screen (but at least 150 px). Used by Telerik GridView Control, if I don't specify Height or MaxHeight Telerik GridView Height becomes very large and does not fit my window. StackPanel - fixed Height 100 (horizontal orientation) The view must totally fit available screen size. The problem is that I don't understand how to make certain areas of my view resize depending on available screen size. Is there is easy way to solve it, or should I be binding to Window height property and doing math? Thank You very much!

    Am working on a program that will allow a graph of nodes to be displayed and then updated visually as the nodes themselves are updated.     I run a small startup and am always on the lookout for quality engineers. I've seen someone solicit SO with a similar question but there was only one response so I'm going to solicit the community again. (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/112766/free-application-to-keep-track-of-a-recruiting-process didn't suffice for me) Over a long period of time, I've found that my system of recruiting is incredibly inefficient. An applicant who might have been attractive the first week might become overshadowed by other applicants further down the road. Sometimes, applicants who I ignored become relevant to a new position that opens up as an web app becomes more robust and takes a turn in a direction I didn't consider. These are all difficult to track. Knowing that recruiting intelligent people should be an ongoing process, what are the best web applications for managing the process? Are there any apps with features catered specifically towards tech startups? (Free or paid, doesn't matter).

  • "Primary Filegroup is Full" in SQL Server 2008 Standard for no apparent reason

    Our database is currently at 64 Gb and one of our apps started to fail with the following error: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Could not allocate space for object 'cnv.LoggedUnpreparedSpos'.'PK_LoggedUnpreparedSpos' in database 'travelgateway' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full. Create disk space by deleting unneeded files, dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup. I double-checked everything: all files in a single filegroup are allowed to autogrow with a reasonable increments (100 Mb for a data file, 10% for a log file), more than 100 Gb of free space is available for the database, tempdb is set to autogrow as well with plenty of free HDD space on its drive. To resolve a problem, I added second file to the filegroup and the error has gone. But I feel uneasy about this whole situation. Where' the problem here, guys?
