  I want to use a server as a device to run a script to parse a SMS text in the following way. I. The person types in a specific and special cell phone number (Similar to Facebook’s 32556 number used to post on your wall) II. The user types a text message. III. The user sends the text message. IV. The message is sent to some kind of Device (the server) or SMS Gateway and receives it. V. The thing described above that the message is sent to then parse the test message. I understand that these three question will mix Programming and Server Stuff and could reside here or at DBA.SE How would I make such a cell phone number (described in step I) that would be sent to the Device? How do I create the device that then would receive it? Finally, how do I Parse the text message?

  I'm a novice programmer and have been experimenting with Javascript, jQuery and PHP but felt I wasn't getting a real depth of understanding of what I was doing. So, after reading Joel Spolsky's response to a question on this site (which I can't find now!), I took it back to basics and read Charles Petzold's 'Code' and am about to move onto Kernighan and Richie's The C Programming Language. I want to learn this in a UNIX environment but only have access to a Windows system. I have Ubuntu 12.04 running on a virtualised machine via VMWare Player, and done some coding in the terminal. Is using a Linux distro the only option for programming in a UNIX environment on Windows? And what are the next steps to start programming in C in UNIX and where do I get a compiler from?

I even want it to not be that big, however it shouldn't contain misconceptions or errors or inaccuracies. • Wrapping up an Exciting Mobile World Congress

  Its been a busy week here in Barcelona, with noticeably more energy at the show than in 2010. This year, we decided to move the Java booth to the App Planet and really engage with the increasing number of developers that are attending the event. Our booth featured 10 demos and a series of nearly 25 workshops featuring a variety of topics ranging from information about Java Verified, to the use of web technologies with Java ME, to sessions hosted by Operators such as Orange and Telefonica (see image to the left).One of the more popular topics in our booth was the use of Java in the Smart Grid. In our booth we were showing off some of the work of the Hydra Consortium whose goal it is to leverage the emerging smart grid infrastructure to securely enable the delivery of personal health data (weight, blood pressure, etc) from the home to your doctor. • Would a professional, self taught programmer benefit from reading an algorithms book?

  I'm a 100% self taught, professional programmer (I've worked at a few web startups and made a few independent games). I've read quite a few of the "essential" books (Clean Code, The Pragmatic Programmer, Code Complete, SICP, K&R). I'm considering reading Introduction to Algorithms. I've asked a few colleagues if reading it will improve my programming skills, and I got very mixed answers. A few said yes, a few said no, and a one said "only if you spend a lot of time implementing these algorithms" (I don't). So, I figured I'd ask Stack Exchange. Is it worth the time to read about algorithms if you're a professional programmer who seldom needs to use complex algorithms? For what it's worth, I have a strong mathematical background (have a 2 year degree in Mathematics; took Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Calc I-III).

• Lubuntu 12.04 installation trouble

  I have i problem! I can't install the Lubuntu 12.04 on my old pc. I only get to the point where I have entered all the needed information (hard drive, username, password etc). When the installation wizard is starting to copy files from the cd to the hard drive, I get after about one minute a blank sreen with only themouse cursor! I can move the mouse cursor but the whole procegure is stoped! Nothing happens after that! My PC: Compaq Pressario 7000 Pentium III 933 MHz 768 MB RAM Any idea how to solve it?? Thanks!!!

I've tested out of most of my gen eds and science-y courses, but I need to know: what math and cs courses are most important for someone interested in algorithm development? Math courses already taken: Calc I-III,Linear Algebra, Discrete Math. CS courses taken: Java. Math courses I'm planning to take: ODE, Linear Algebra II, Vector calc, Logic, (Analysis or Algebra), Stats, probability CS courses I'm planning to take: C(required), Data Structures, Numerical Methods, Intro to Analysis of Algorithms. Which is better, analysis or algebra? Did I take enough CS courses? Am I missing out on anything? Thanks.
