• Are all the system's floating points operations the same?

  We're making this web app in PHP and when working in the reports we have Excel files to compare our results to make sure our coding is doing the right operations. Now we're running into some differences due floating point arithmetics. We're doing the same divisions and multiplications and running into slightly different numbers, that add up to a notable difference. My question is if Excel is delegating it's floating point arithmetic to the CPU and PHP is also relying in the CPU for it's operations. Or does each application implements its own set of math algorithms?

• How can I create an .xls file with a readwrite password from Delphi

  I know that it is possible to create .xls files from Delphi using ADO, OLE automation with Excel and even using several commercial libraries. My requirement now is not just creating a new .xls file and adding data to it but in addition protecting it with a password against editing. I guess this would be possible using OLE automation but that would require an Excel installation on the computer and also add all the potential hassle of OLE automation which I would like to avoid. Does any of the other solutions provide the option of password protecting the file? (Yes, I know this is far from secure, but the customer requests it. Just in case it matters: I am using Delphi 2007.)

  When i upload a excel file, i have used COM() to open and automate converting it to xml. It works fine, But when i run it, it always shows the message from Microsoft Excel: A file named ''' already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it? I can choose between Yes No and Cancel. normally i would choose Yes. But i dont want users to click on Yes each time. Can i disable this? Please inform me if any relevant codes need to be posted.   So I have a model that I need to be able to serialize to/read from an Excel(XLS) document. I am a bit of a loss as to where this code actually belongs. My initial thought is that the to_xls is a view, but after poking around and seeing things like (to|from)_xml and (to|from)_json in ActiveRecord, I was wondering if maybe this stuff belonged in the model. Alternatively, does it belong in just a whole separate container somewhere? For what it's worth, users will be downloading models from the site, modifying them in excel, then posting them.

• WHERE IN Query with two recordsets in Access VBA

  Hi All, My first post here, so i hope this is the right area. I am currently trying to compare 2 recordsets, one of which has come from an Excel named range, and the other from a table in the Access database. The code for each is: Set existingUserIDs = db.OpenRecordset("SELECT Username FROM UserData") Set IDsToImport = exceldb.OpenRecordset("SELECT Username FROM Named_Range") The problem is that I would like to somehow compare these two recordsets, without looping (there is a very large number of records). Is there any way to do a join or similar on these recordsets? I can not do a join before creating the recordsets, due to the fact that one is coming from Excel, and the other from Access, so they are two different DAO databases. The end goal is that I will choose only the usernames that do not already exist in the access table to be imported (so in an SQL query, it would be a NOT IN(table)). Is there risk of the binaries getting detached from the spreadsheet It seems like microsoft has been pushing VSTO for over 5 years now but you read lots of mixed reviews and issues. Are we at the point where companies that do large VBA excel solutions can fully migrate over to dotnet without any real worries?

  I have a dll function that takes BSTR parameters. These are casted as char* before being used for other things. When the dll is called from VB code this works fine. However, when it is called from C# code, only the first character is pointed to. Both of these are excel addIns for Pre-2007 and 2007+ versions of Office, which call into a faster C++ AddIn. They actually call it directly, not through Excel. The VB function declaration looks like this: Private Declare Function Test Lib "ExcelAddIn.xll" (ByVal param As String) As String The C# function declaration looks like this: [DllImport("ExcelAddIn.xll", CharSet=CharSet.Ansi)] [return:MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.BStr)] private static extern string Test([MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.BStr)] string param); When debugging the dll and watching the input BSTR values, they appear to be correct from both; just the C# one only casts the first character.   I have a file with a bunch of number in columns. These numbers are separated by variable number of spaces. I want to skip the first line and get all the other lines and separte each number on the line. Finally, I want to write each number on Excel. I've been able to get the lines and write them on Excel but I can't separate each number (I'm getting the whole line as one string). Does any body know how to split a string that has a variable number of spaces? Here is my code. • My winform application doesn't work on others' pc without vs 2010 installed

  Just like I said, my winform application works properly on computers with VS installed, but on other computers, it will crash due to a FileNotFound Exception. I used using Application = Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Application; in my source code to generate a Excel file, and the problem occurs as soon as the Excel-related function is called. But I don't know what it refers to exactly. Do I have to get some .dll included along with the .exe file? And what DLL is that? • SSRS 2008 printing single page renders different for print

  I have a problem with SSRS 2008 reports rendering differently on the reporting server than the way it renders when you print the report. I’m trying to figure out to print a single page and have the print show that same records as I see on the report on the screen. As a test, I created a simple report with no headers or footers and just added a Tablix table to display the records (no groupings). My data set for this test displays 2 ¼ pages of records when I deploy it to our reporting services server and run it. If I click the print Icon and preview the report is 2 ¾ pages. I haven’t found anything searching on this so it makes me think it is something simple I’m missing. A basically want the report to render the same records on each page in Report Manager as it does when it prints, how do I accomplish this? (In response to answer posted by Chris)…If that is the case then it is disappointing. Customers are accustomed to WYSIWYG and will have a hard time understanding that, I imagine we will be getting a lot of support calls. This still leaves an issue. I tried using print preview and could not find any way to single out a page. If I select a page up front to print, or preview it renders different so I get different records. And if I preview the entire document, I can only print the entire document. You mentioned the Excel render; we have customers that will want that also. The problem I have found with Excel exports is that even a basic report winds up merging some cells and that messes up sorting. I’m going to try your tip about grouping to see if I can get a clean export to a page. It would have been nice if they would have created a property for certain controls like the tablix table called “ExcelSheet”. Then all you would have to do is give it a name and it would create a new sheet for each control with a name, the name becoming the sheet title. Thanks for the information you supplied it is very useful as I’m new to SSRS. If you know how I can Preview in print render and select individual pages to print from the render let me know. Update 02/19/2010 After testing this more I now realize it is just a bad design of Report managers print driver or a limitation because it is server based. The options work differently than Windows apps drivers, But I did find a work around. Here is the test I performed comparing Excel to Report Manager. I bring up a report that will render more than 1 page when printed. I then export to Excel, in Excel I select print preview. I can navigate the pages in preview and then select a single page like page 3. I can then print just page 3 without leaving print preview and it prints just like it rendered. I cannot do this using print in report manager. If I select print preview in report manager then try to print while in preview it always prints the entire document. However if I close out of print preview, I can then select page 3 and print it as rendered. It is just one additional step once you know what to do, but it took some time to figure it out.

• PHP strtotime() setting date to default

  I have a script which is reading values from an excel sheet and inserting them into an sql table. My problem is when the script reads in some of the date fields it is setting them to a default value : 1970-01-01 01:00:00 I have noticed that this is happening when it comes across a date where the 'day' is greater than 12 : 13/05/2012 18:52:33 (dd-mm-yyyy hh-mm-ss) I thought this may be due to the script thinking that this is the month field (i.e american format) and it sees it as an invalid value, so I set the default timezone to my own hoping it may resolve the problem but it made no difference. date_default_timezone_set('Europe/Dublin'); Here is an example of what my code is doing: Excel field value : 01/05/2012 18:32:45 Script: $start_time = $data->val($x,5); echo $start_time = date("Y-m-d H:i:s", strtotime($start_time)); Output: 2012-01-05 18:32:45 This is the exact format I am looking for (except for the fact that the day and month fields are switched around i.e american date format) but it doesnt work for the type of dates I mentioned above.

• WSDLs generated by Axis2 services can't be read by SoapUI or WSDL2Java

  I'm converting some services from Apache SOAP to Axis2, so the Java service classes already exist. I created a new project in Eclipse, imported the source, made sure that the Axis2 project facets were installed, and Axis2 emitter properties are correct. Then, in Eclipse, I selected the service class and chose "Create Web Service," choosing the Axis2 runtime. The service is up and running on my PC, and when I append "?wsdl" to the service's path, I do indeed get a WSDL that I save locally. Attempting to import this into SoapUI to build a client gives the error: ERROR:org.apache.xmlbeans.XmlException: C:\projects\soapUI\Axis2\DALService.wsdl:0: error: src-resolve: type 'SOAPException@http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema' not found. The type it's referring to (SOAPException) is a holdover from the Apache SOAP services, and in the service code, I changed all "import" references in the service code (not the WSDL) from org.apache.soap.SOAPException (the old Apache SOAP package name) to javax.xml.soap.SOAPException (the Axis2 location). The code compiles and works, once I can access it, but I can't access it without generating a client. Any thoughts as to why changing the namespace of an object would keep the generated WSDLs from having the proper namespace references?

• Consume a WCF Web Service in Sharepoint Services 3.0

  I've seen this question and since it doesn't answer my question and the topic is fairly miss-leading in my opinion, I feel the urge to ask this again. I have a Sharepoint Webpart that I deploy using Visual Studio Sharepoint Tools 1.2 to a Sharepoint Services 3.0 instance on my local Windows 2003 server. All works great, however, as soon as I add a WCF Service it won't run the code. All I get is a File not found error.   Does anyone know if this subversion "bug" has been dealt with? https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/subversion/tags/1.6.9/www/faq.html#windows-access-denied I'm getting occasional "Access Denied" errors on Windows. They seem to happen at random. Why? These appear to be due to the various Windows services that monitor the filesystem for changes (anti-virus software, indexing services, the COM+ Event Notification Service). This is not really a bug in Subversion, which makes it difficult for us to fix. A summary of the current state of the investigation is available here. A workaround that should reduce the incidence rate for most people was implemented in revision 7598; if you have an earlier version, please update to the latest release. Currently I am experiencing this same behavior in version 1.5.6 when I try and do a SVN switch (I have suspected McAfee as the culprit for a while and when I saw this I feel it validates my suspicions). I read through the link given but it seems pretty old, so I didn't know if this FAQ was just outdated and the issue has actually be resolved. Thanks for any help. • RIA Services for transmitting non DB object-graph

  I have been getting into RIA services because I thought it would simplify dealing with the services layer of web applications I wish to build. I see lots of examples out there showing how to create DomainService classes which expose and consume entities that have some kind of relational database backing, and therefore have foreign-key relationships. However, I would like to know how to expose and consume normal object graphs...objects that contain references to eachother but don't have foreign keys. For example, say I want a service operation called "GetFolderInformation(string pathToFolder)". I want this to return a custom object called "FolderInformation" structured with: - string Name - IEnumerable<FileInformation> Files I cannot get this to work because it seems that RIA wants to deal with entities that have foreign key relationships. Why? Why can't the serializer just see my object references and recreate that in the proxy on the other side? Data exists behind service layers that doesn't necessarily have foreign key relationships...like folder/file for example. EDIT: I realized I hadn't asked my question! My question is, is there a way to do what I am trying to do?

  I'm trying to get Apache CXF JAX-RS services working with Spring AOP. I've created a simple logging class: public class AOPLogger{ public void logBefore(){ System.out.println("Logging Before!"); } } My Spring configuration (beans.xml): <aop:config> <aop:aspect id="aopLogger" ref="test.aop.AOPLogger"> <aop:before method="logBefore" pointcut="execution(* test.rest.RestService(..))"/> </aop:aspect> </aop:config> <bean id="aopLogger" class="test.aop.AOPLogger"/> I always get an NPE in RestService when a call is made to a Method getServletRequest(), which has: return messageContext.getHttpServletRequest(); If I remove the aop configuration or comment it out from my beans.xml, everything works fine. All of my actual Rest services extend test.rest.RestService (which is a class) and call getServletRequest(). I'm just trying to just get AOP up and running based off of the example in the CXF JAX-RS documentation. Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!

• Mac CoreLocation Services does not ask for permissions

  I'm writing a Mac App that needs to use CoreLocation services. The code and location works fine, as long as I manually authenticate the service inside the security preference pane. However the framework is not automatically popping up with a permission dialog. The documentation states: Important The user has the option of denying an application’s access to the location service data. During its initial uses by an application, the Core Location framework prompts the user to confirm that using the location service is acceptable. If the user denies the request, the CLLocationManager object reports an appropriate error to its delegate during future requests. I do get an error to my delegate, and the value of +locationServicesEnabled is correct on CLLocationManager. The only part missing is the prompt to the user about permissions. This occurs on my development MPB and a friends MBP. Neither of us can figure out whats wrong. Has anyone run into this? Relevant code: _locationManager = [CLLocationManager new]; [_locationManager setDelegate:self]; [_locationManager setDesiredAccuracy:kCLLocationAccuracyKilometer]; ... [_locationManager startUpdatingLocation]; UPDATE: Answer It seems there is a problem with Sandboxing in which the CoreLocation framework is not allowed to talk to com.apple.CoreLocation.agent. I suspect this agent is responsible for prompting the user for permissions. If you add the Location Services Entitlement (com.apple.security.personal-information.location) it only gives your app the ability to use the CL framework. However you also need access to the CoreLocation agent to ask the user for permissions. You can give your app access by adding the entitlement 'com.apple.security.temporary-exception.mach-lookup.global-name' with a value of 'com.apple.CoreLocation.agent'. Users will be prompted for access automatically like you would expect. I've filed a bug to apple on this already.

• Silverlight RIA Services - Showing columns from multiple tables

  Hello, I have been evaluating Silverlight and .NET RIA Services for my company. I am trying to decide if it is right for us. For the most part, I like it. But, I see one item that I am surprised that I cannot do easily. Because of this, I'm guessing I'm doing some thing wrong. To demonstrate, I have two database tables: Order ----- ID CustomerID OrderDate OrderNumber Customer -------- ID FirstName LastName Address When I create my Domain Service class, I select both of these tables. On the Silverlight application, I drag-and-drop the Order entity from the Data Sources page to my Silverlight page. When I do this, a DataGrid is added with all of the properties in the Order entity. In reality though, I would like the DataGrid to show: Order.OrderNumber Order.OrderDate Customer.FirstName Customer.LastName Because this information is spread across multiple tables, I'm not sure how to use RIA Services to show them in my Silverlight application. What is the recommended way to do this? Should I add a view in my database? Can I do it without touching the database? Thank you,

• Doing a POST to a Service Operation in ADO.NET data services

  Is it possible to POST to a service operation defined in an ADO.NET data service (it is decorated with WebInvoke)? I had no problem calling the service operation as an HTTP GET. However, when I switched to doing a POST, the stack trace consistently comes back with "Parameter cannot be NULL". I am using the jQuery syntax below, and sending the POST as JSON (though I'm not including the $.ajax call, the parameter names line up exactly). It would be possible to try this with WCF, as opposed to ADO.NET data services (newly renamed as WCF data services). However, my preference would be to use this approach first. I have tried this with and without the stringify method. Most examples online only show how to use a POST to entities (i.e. for handling CRUD operations). • MSI install sequence - run DB scripts before services start

  Folks, we're running into some sequencing troubles with our MSI install. As part of our app, we install a bunch of services and allow the user to pick whether to start them right away or later. When they start right away, they seem to start too early in the install sequence - before our database manager had a chance to update the database. Right now, our custom action to run the database updater looks like this - it's being run after "InstallFinalize" - very late in the process. <InstallExecuteSequence> <RemoveExistingProducts After='InstallInitialize' /> <Custom Action='RunDbUpdateManagerAction' After='InstallFinalize'> DbUpdateManager=3</Custom> </InstallExecuteSequence> What would be the more appropriate step to run after or before, to make sure the DB scripts are executed before any of the installed services start up? Is there a "BeforeServiceStart" step? EDIT: Just defining the "Before='StartServices'" attribute on the tag didn't solve my problem. I am assuming the issue is this: the custom action has an "inner text", which represents a condition, and this condition is: "&DbUpdateManager=3". From what I can deduce from trial & error, this probably means "the DbUpdateManager feature must be published". Now, trouble is: "PublishFeature" comes way at the end in the install sequence, just before "InstallFinalize", and definitely AFTER InstallServices / StartServices. So when I specify the "Before=StartServices" requirement, the condition "DbUpdateManager feature must be published" isn't true yet, so the DbUpdateManager doesn't get executed :-( I tried removing the condition - in that case, my DbUpdateManager sometimes doesn't execute at all, sometimes more than once - no real clear pattern as to what happens when..... Any more ideas?? Is there a way I could check for a condition "the DbUpdateManager feature is installed" which would be true after the "InstallFiles" step?? Marc
