• Frequent Netbeans freezes

  I'm using Netbeans 6.8 for PHP projects located on network drives in a Windows network. Frequently, the IDE gets really slow (like a temporary freeze) to a point where it's totally unusable. At first it seems like a total crash, but after some time (might be sevaral minutes) the IDE works again as before. This happens with Netbeans 6.7 as well as 6.8 on my Windows XP 32-bit installation. I'm using Java 1.6.0_13. This is a fresh Netbeans installation, so it can't have to do with too many temp files. I assume it has to do with the frequent code checks that Netbeans does. It's probably not very fast when doing this over the network connection. But it can't be that this feature renders the IDE useless... This thread deals with the same issue http://forums.netbeans.org/viewtopic.php?t=5548. Does anyone know a solution to this problem?

  I am assigned to a performance-tuning-debugging-troubleshooting task. Scenario: a multi-application environment running on several networked machines using databases. OS is Unix, DB is Oracle. Business logic is implemented across applications using synchronous/asynchronous communication. Applications are multi-user with several hundred call center users at peak time. User interfaces are web-based. Applications are third party, I can get access to developers and source code. I only have the production system and a functional test environment, no load test environment. Problem: bad performance! I need fast results. Management is going crazy. I got symptom examples like these: user interface actions taking minutes to complete. Seaching for a customer usually takes 6 seconds but an immediate subsequent search with same parameters may take 6 minutes. What would be your strategy for finding root causes?

• cygwin slow file open

  My application uses fopen to open a lot of files. While in linux opening and reading thousand of files doesn't even take a second; in cygwin it takes more than 5 seconds. I think it is because path conversion functions in cygwin dlls. 'open' function is a bit faster. If I use -mno-cygwin it becomes very fast but I can't use it. Is there an easy way to make cygwin dlls just open files; without any linux-windows conversion?

• how to profile silverlight mvvm application with a lot of custom controls

  There is a quite big LOB silverlight application and we wrote a lot of custom controls which are rather heavy in drawing. All data is loaded by RIA service, processed and bound (using INofityPropertyChanged interface) to the view. The problem is that first drawing takes a lot time. Following calls to the service (server) and redrawing is quite fast. I used Equatec profiler to track the problem. I saw that processing takes a couple of miliseconds only so my idea is that the drawing by SL engine is slow. I'm wondering if it is possible to profile somehow processes inside SL to check which drawing operations are taking too much time. Are there any guidelines how to implement faster drawing of complex custom controls?

• OpenLayers, Layers: Tiled vs. single tile

  Each time we add a new layer to our OpenLayers based website (data provided primarily by a GeoServer server), we discuss whether to use a single-tile or a tiled approach. Some of the parameters we evaluate are the following: Using the tiled approach we get: Slow but continuous buildup of the viewport Lots of small images Client side caching possibilities Blocking of the loading pipeline (6 requests at a time) Jerky feeling when navigating during load Using the single-tile approach we get: Smoother feeling when navigating during load Time delay before layer is loaded One large image for each layer No caching of the single tile We have a lot of data editing in the layers, thus a tile-cache might not be that efficient. Are there any best-practices when it comes to tiling? Progressing towards infinitely fast hardware and unlimited data connections, the discussion becomes irrelevant, but what configuration do you percieve as the most user-pleasing?

• GTK+ (GTKSharp) poor performance in Windows

  Hi, In my Mono (C#) project that is meant to be cross-platform, I am using the GTK for the UI. However one thing I noticed is, on my netbook in Archlinux, the performance is really speedy, so events such as mouse hover, and redrawing of widgets, etc, are really fast. Compared to windows (7) on dual core CPUs, the performance is really really weak. Which perplexes me. Am I doing something wrong that is warranting this difference in performance between OSes? What are some ways I can do to optimize GTK on Windows? Its really bad to take around 0.5 secs for a hover event to kick in whereas its almost immediate on a weak(er) netbook with Linux. • Eager loading vs. many queries with PHP, SQLite

  I have an application that has an n+1 query problem, but when I implemented a way to load the data eagerly, I found absolutely no performance gain. I do use an identity map, so objects are only created once. Here's a benchmark of ~3000 objects. first query + first object creation: 0.00636100769043 sec. memory usage: 190008 bytes iterate through all objects (queries + objects creation): 1.98003697395 sec. memory usage: 7717116 bytes And here's one when I use eager loading. query: 0.0881109237671 sec. memory usage: 6948004 bytes object creation: 1.91053009033 sec. memory usage: 12650368 bytes iterate through all objects: 1.96605396271 sec. memory usage: 12686836 bytes So my questions are Is SQLite just magically lightning fast when it comes to small queries? (I'm used to working with MySQL.) Does this just seem wrong to anyone? Shouldn't eager loading have given much better performance?

• Tomcat 5.5, Is there a max upload speed per request?

  I am having an issue when uploading files to tomcat. It seems that tomcat (or something else?) will not handle the upload as fast as I can send it. When uploading multiple files concurrently I can max out my local connection upload speed (2.1MB/s). However, when uploading only one file at a time, no matter how small or large the file, the upload will max out around 400KB/s. I have tried setting the appReadBufSize higher but it makes no difference. Is there something else that would be limiting the upload speed per request? • How to open a document using an application launched via NSTask?

  Hello world, I've grown tired of the built-in open Mac OS X command, mostly because it runs programs with your actual user ID instead of the effective user ID; this results in the fact sudo open Foo opens Foo with its associated application with your account instead of the root account, and it annoys me. So I decided to make some kind of replacement. So far I've been successful: I can open any program under the open -a or open -b fashion, and support optionally waiting. I'm using NSTask for that purpose. However, I'd like to be able to open documents too. As far as I can see, you need to use NSWorkspace for that, but using NSWorkspace to launch programs results in them being launched with your account's credentials instead of your command line program's credentials. Which is precisely what the default open tool does, and precisely what I don't want. So, how can I have a program request that another program opens a document without using NSWorkspace? From the NSTask object, I can have the process ID, but that's about it.

• Visual Studio 2008 freezing when editing aspx/master pages

  Visual Studio freezes up continually when I'm editing master pages or aspx files. Here's what I've tried that have not helped: restarting VS only working with few files open at a time Disabled all addins (resharper etc.) deleted .suo and .user files changed default editor from Web Form Editor and Master Page Editor to HTML Editor installed SP1 I don't have tons of files - 3 Master pages and maybe 30 aspx files. It is a asp.net mvc project. All I have to do to get VS to freeze is type a little text or even just paste. The freezing lasts a good 5-10 seconds. My machine has 4GB of RAM and fast disks. Could it have anything to do with asp.net mvc? Would the amount and size of other projects in the solution affect the editor?

  Hi, ive been working on c++ on linux for the past 2 years,and switched to windows c++ programming recently. can anyone tell me what that L is there in the argument of the function: SHLoadImageFile(L"\\Program Files\\TrainingApp\\background.png"); and on viewing certain sample code in MSVS C++ i came across hundereds of typedefs like.. LPARAM// typedef LONG_PTR LPARAM... here LONG_PTR is again typedef as __w64 long WPARAM// typedef UINT_PTR WPARAM... so there is a lot of chained typedefs.. I never saw this much of typedef chaining on c++ programming on linux using gcc.. what i want to say is that it just creates more confusion in this way for windows application programming.. while ive seen application programming on linux using frameworks like Qt.. there such things are rarely used.. so is there specific purpose in typedefining again and again on MSVSC++?? for eg.. there are typdefs like typedef int BOOL; whats the use of this when normal bool is available already..?? there are hundred other cases ive come across where just to decide what data type to use becomes so difficult.. it becomes difficult to understand a pre written code in this fashion too.. • Reading CSV files in numpy where delimiter is ","

  Hello all, I've got a CSV file with a format that looks like this: "FieldName1", "FieldName2", "FieldName3", "FieldName4" "04/13/2010 14:45:07.008", "7.59484916392", "10", "6.552373" "04/13/2010 14:45:22.010", "6.55478493312", "9", "3.5378543" ... Note that there are double quote characters at the start and end of each line in the CSV file, and the "," string is used to delimit fields within each line. When I try to read this into numpy via: import numpy as np data = np.genfromtxt(csvfile, dtype=None, delimiter=',', names=True) all the data gets read in as string values, surrounded by double-quote characters. Not unreasonable, but not much use to me as I then have to go back and convert every column to its correct type When I use delimiter='","' instead, everything works as I'd like, except for the 1st and last fields. As the start of line and end of line characters are a single double-quote character, this isn't seen as a valid delimiter for the 1st and last fields, so they get read in as e.g. "04/13/2010 14:45:07.008 and 6.552373" - note the leading and trailing double-quote characters respectively. Because of these redundant characters, numpy assumes the 1st and last fields are both String types; I don't want that to be the case Is there a way of instructing numpy to read in files formatted in this fashion as I'd like, without having to go back and "fix" the structure of the numpy array after the initial read?

That seems to be taking it to the extreme to me, so if I'm right as I am, what is the real-world meaning of the "one assert per test" advice?

Simplified I have 3 types of objects: Product Tag ProductTag Product: key - string key name - string .... - some other fields Tag: key - string key name - unique tag words ProductTag: product_key - foreign key referring to product tag_key - foreign key referring to tag rating - this is rating of tag for this product Each product may have 0 or many tags. Tag may be assigned to 1 or many products. Means relation between products and tags is many-to-many in terms of relational databases. Value of "rating" is updated "very" often. I need to be run the following queries Select objects by keys Select tags for product ordered by rating Select products by tag order by rating Update rating by product_key and tag_key The most important is to make these queries really fast on large amounts of data, considering that rating is constantly updated.

• MGTwitterEngine - Using getImageAtURL on iPhone

  Essentially, I'm working on asynchronously downloading images and adding them to specific UITableView cells (twitter profile images using MGTwitterEngine from Matt Gemmell). I've looked at general asynchronous download code and must admit, I'm still too much of a noob to understand it well enough to adapt it to my purposes. Instead, I'm attempting to use Gemmell's included getImageAtUrl method to add the images. I have it working to the point that -imageReceived: receives the images for visible cells, however, I'm stuck as to how to include them into the appropriate cells at that point. - (void)imageReceived:(UIImage *)image forRequest:(NSString *)identifier { NSLog(@"Got an image:%@",image); // What goes here? Or elsewhere? } This method is within my main view controller, I also have a custom cell controller where I'm drawing the cell content using Loren Brichter's fast scrolling code. Any help with this MGTwitterEngine method in particular, or with dynamically adding these images to my table cells would be greatly appreciated.

• how to optimize illustrator artwork in flash?

  I'm working on a flash project that incorporates a lot of artwork done in Illustrator CS4. I've been copy-pasting directly from Illustrator into Flash, and I add some animations as well. Final file is going to be a one single swf file which will be a part of UI for an application and .net will be the core for this. But now flash becomes unusable slow to respond for actions. My machine is a fast i7 with 6gb of RAM, so I don't think that's the issue. We are going to use this file with dual core atom processors. Does anyone have ideas for alternative importing techniques, optimizations within illustrator, anything at all that will make this more manageable? Thanks

• Disabling scoring in Lucene(.NET)

  Hi, When searching, is there a way to disable scoring for any query? The scenario is that the user refines his query by trying different combinations of words, phrases etc., and needs realtime (well, reasonably fast at least) responses on the number of hits. Search time slows down a lot when there are millions of hits due to scoring, but the user really doesn't care about all these documents. As soon as he sees there are 1M+ hits he will start adding additional words to the query. A "Sort by relevance" option would allow him to do this quickly, while turning scoring back on when the number of hits is reasonable. Is this possible? I'm using Lucene.NET 2.9.2 but AFAIK it is identical to the Java version.

  OK, I'm probably just having a bad Monday, but I have the following need and I'm seeing lots of partial solutions but I'm sure I'm not the first person to need this, so I'm wondering if I'm missing the obvious. $client has 50 to 500 bytes worth of binary data that must be inserted into the middle of a URL and roundtrip to their customer's browser. Since it's part of the URL, we're up against the 1K "theoretical" limit of a GET URL. Also, $client doesn't want their customer decoding the data, or tampering with it without detection. $client would also prefer not to store anything server-side, so this must be completely standalone. Must be Perl code, and fast, in both encoding and decoding. I think the last step can be base64. But what are the steps for encryption and hashing that make the most sense?

• Entity Framework Performance Problem

  I'm hoping that someone can help me understand how to overcome a performance problem I'm running into with the latest version of the Entity Framework. In my test, I created my model from a database consisting of around 80 tables. The problem that I'm running into is that the cost of the very first query I run on a thread is very expensive. If I run without pre-compiling views the first query takes anywhere from 5800 to 6600 milliseconds. If I pre-compile the views (see this article) I can get the initial query cost down to about 2800 to 3200 milliseconds. 3 seconds for each request is still unacceptable for my needs. Subsequent queries are very fast. Can you please help me understand how to eliminate the poor performance of the initial query? I'm using the version of entity framework that ships with Visual Studio 2010 RC.

• Jquery - Get all other menus to slide up

  I have a drop down menu made with Jquery. Right now, if you hover over all the menu items, their submenus will all show at the same time. I would like that if I hover over one menu, then go to the next, that the previous menu's submenu will slide back up. As it is now, I have to hover out of the submenus for them to slide up. • Huge dataset point in polygon in .net (collision detection)

  I have a pretty big mesh with polygons, usually triangles but sometimes rectangles. Each point in my mesh has a value (value has nothing to do with coordinates). Now I am creating a second mesh in the same coordinate-space as the old mesh. I now want to interpolate out values for all points (vertices) in the new mesh using the values from the old mesh. Now I could loop each polygon in the new mesh and detect which old vertices are in each polygon by making 2d collision detection (altho even this I don't get to function properly so if anyone has simple and fast code for 2d collision detection (triangle is enough) I would gladly see it). However to my main point again. looping each old vertice for each new polygon seems less than efficient. is there a better way?

• Cannot install Curb gem on Netbeans 6.9 R2

  Hi guys, I'm trying to install feedzirra. When i install curb on my netbeans i get following errors. Building native extensions. This could take a while... ERROR: Error installing curb-0.7.6.gem: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. "C:/Program Files/NetBeans 6.9 RC2/ruby/jruby-1.5.0/bin/jruby.bat.exe" extconf.rb '"C:/Program Files/NetBeans 6.9 RC2/ruby/jruby-1.5.0/bin/jruby.bat.exe"' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Gem files will remain installed in C:/Program Files/NetBeans 6.9 RC2/ruby/jruby-1.5.0/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/curb-0.7.6 for inspection. Results logged to C:/Program Files/NetBeans 6.9 RC2/ruby/jruby-1.5.0/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/curb-0.7.6/ext/gem_make.out Any ideas how I can get this to work? • What is the correct way to import and export out of Excel to SQL Server and back?

  Looking for the correct way and control to import and export of out of Microsoft Excel programmatically. I am willing to get a 3rd party control that supports this functionality, or I can create it myself, but looking to get this prioject done fast. The Datasource will be offline. Although when it is online for the upload/download if there is a control that would merge them, that would work also. But best is to remain offline, don't need the support headache. Security is also an issue. SSIS is not available on the shared database server. The website that hosts the asp.net application is not on the same machine as the sql server. Thank you.
