• copy WinXP Home recovery files to new SSD

  My wife's Samsung netbook, which has Windows XP Home Edition OEM and a 5400 SATA 2 HDD, has finally crawled to (almost) a halt, and I've decided to install an OCZ SSD into it. The problem is that the machine came with no recovery media, but the recovery partition exists and I can boot into it. How can I go about creating a bootable DVD from that partition, and then boot off that to install on the SSD? NOTE: My aim after this is to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium, as the upgrade option is a lot cheaper than purchasing a retail or DSP equivalent.

• Private VOIP network

  I own a small private security services business. Some of my clients require 2-10 security officers per location. I'm trying to think outside the box in order to solve my communications problem. I'd rather not buy or lease hf radios or voip systems at the current rates. • Suggestion for live video stream aggregation/switching/forwarding/management software?

  I'm looking for a software or system that can receive video streams from a number of cameras via a network (RTMP or similar protocol), present a visual overview of all video streams and allow me to forward/send a selected stream to another service (e.g. to a Flash Media Server, or anywhere via RTMP). Basically the digital internet equivalent of a TV studio control panel, which allows a director to put together a live show. Is there any such software at an affordable price? A GUI-less server which can be scripted to switch streams would be good too. I'm not even quite sure what kind of product category this falls into or what search terms to plug into Google. Most results I have come up with have little more than an executive summary description which doesn't tell me anything. Any suggestion welcome.

  I want to buy a MacBook Air for my wife with a 128GB SSD. She has to use Windows 7 but I would like to keep OS X for myself to use somtimes. Using Bootcamp, is it feasible to install the following? Mac partition: 36GB with Mac OS X and Microsoft Office 2011 Word, Excel & Powerpoint and Skype. (minimal use) Windows partition: 92GB with Windows 7 professional and Microsoft Office 2010 Word, Excel & Powerpoint, and Skype (daily use) Media to be kept on SD card or external USB3 drive. (Note: Using Parrallels may save space, but my wife won't go for the user experience)

• Catch headset pause/play keypresses in Windows

  I have a new Ultrabook which has single audio jack for input and output instead for separate 3.5 mm jacks we used to have on older machines. The jack is probably similar to American Audio Jack specification or like the one found on Macbook Pro. I have tried to use it with the Apple, HTC, Nokia earphones which ship with most of the smartphones. Microphone on the headset works the way it should. Thing is that the headsets also come with remote controls to control volume and playback. I am sure that those key presses are sent to the Windows. I was hoping to catch those events and bind those to actual media keys so that I can control music playback. I guess this happens on Macs. I want to do the similar thing on the Windows. I'm just not sure where I can catch the events. Driver level? Application level?

• Automatically reboot Windows8 if no internet activity

  I have a media server located in a very inconvenient part of my house. Occasionally I will have to reset my router or it will reset itself. The issue is the PC loses connectivity for some reason, and I am forced to walk outside, around the house, into the basement, over a bunch of toys and weights and boxes, to push a button to reboot it. I would love to have it check itself every 5-10 minutes and auto reboot if it is unable to ping a given address/IP. Any ideas how to accomplish this?

• iTunes + External Hard Drive problem

  Okay, so I've always stored my music on my external hard drive and run it from there with iTunes. Recently, however, it's being a little awkward. I think it was because I accidentally tried to run a song off my hard drive when it wasn't plugged in and, as would be expected, it said it couldn't find it. So I plug the hard drive in, locate the file and off it goes. But now it won't find any of the files... When I go to the "Get Info" page on the right click menu on a song I notice it has prepended file://localhost/ to everything, so my paths look like this: "file://localhost/E:/Sam/Media/Music/[song name]" I went into the iTunes Music Library.xml file and did a search and replace for file://localhost/ and replaced it with nothing and tried opening iTunes again and it just added file://localhost/ to every file again! Anyone have any idea why it does this and how to fix it without reimporting my library?

• Remove DRM From a WMV file I own

  Alright, first, let me explain. I purchased some content through Microsoft's Zune/Xbox Video service, and man that was a mistake. After trying several times to get the video to play, I received an error along the lines of "out of licenses." Lucky for me, I was able to recover the file I was looking for off of a backup, but now I'm having problems playing it. It works fine in Windows Media Player, but not in Zune or Xbox Video (on Windows 8). I contacted Zune's customer support, and of course they couldn't help me. So, I legally own the content, I just want to be able to play it where I want to play it. It's ridiculous that I can't. I know there are ways to do this out there, I just can't figure it out (I keep getting directed to this piece of junk thing called Almedia, which kind of seems to work, but was only putting out audio in the demo version). • Sound card problem, no audio device detected

  I bought a new sound card because my built in sound card did not function. When I open YouTube, Media Player or anything that can create a sound my computer will hang up and sometimes when I start my computer it will hang when the Windows XP sound will activate. Update: My computer has no audio. It says NO AUDIO DEVICE. I already installed Realtek AC97 and Realtek High Definition Audio Driver and I also pasted stream.dll to the Windows and system32 folders and I restarted my computer but it still says NO AUDIO DEVICE. • How to repair a Veritas tape that has been overwritten a bit?

  I meant to restore some files, but I forgot that there was a monday backup job just waiting for tape loading. So veritas 10d started to write over my tape and that valuable data is now gone. The original data size was about 40 GB and that accidentally started job wrote about 30 MB to the begin of tape. What are my possibilities to recover some data from that tape? Update: Inventory and catalog doesn't help, media settings are overwrite, not append. It is a DLT drive.

• Use Backup Exec configuration 2010 R3 file on 2012

  I'm looking to upgrade my backup solution from Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3 (Which i believe is the same version as 13) to Backup Exec 2012. Now, it's pretty easy to open BEutility and use the "Copy media server configuration"-function in 2010 R3, but I have not found any answers as to whether this file can be imported flawlessly into 2012 or not. It would save loads of time if it's doable. Since I HAVE TO remove the 2010 installation before installing 2012, it's not possible to just test it. I need to know before I go through with it. Anyone who's tried the same? PS: Running Windows Server Standard 2008 R2

• How to tell if my sound card is listed in Device Manager?

  The sound on my computer suddenly stopped working. When I check Sounds and Audio Devices in the Control Panel, I get "No Audio Device" with everything grayed out. When I check the Device Manager under "Sound, video and game controllers" I see the following list: Audio Codecs Legacy Audio Drivers Legacy Video Capture Devices Media Control Devices MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device Standard Game Port Video Codecs None of these looks like my sound card. Of course, my sound "card" is not really a sound card, it's integrated with the nVidia-nForce motherboard. I'm running Windows XP. So is one of the above my sound device, or is the OS not detecting it? If the latter, how do I get it to detect it?

• Prevent Windows 7 from unpluging External HDD [migrated]

  I have installed Windows 7 as my media server. I pluged in 500GB external HDD via USB. I have changed power plan to Best Performance and changed advenced power settings to never turn off HDD etc. I even yesterday wrote powershell script (create and delete folder on this disk) and I have added it to harmonogram to run every 5 minutes starting from system boot. And nothing! Disk after some time (I realy can't say when) is turning off and Windows show "Unknown Device" in Device Manager. Then only system reboot or disk reboot helps. Any ideas how to prevent Windows 7 from stopping my external HDD? Cheers!

• wordpress makes duplicate images of different size

  I have a wordpress website. I upload my pictures to the media library. And when I import a picture in a post, you get the options, one of which ask you what size to display it in. And doing this results in creating a new image file that is a different size, rather than wordpress using html to control the size of the image. • DIrect videos and slideshows fullscreen from another display

  I have 3 displays: 1 control display I can see 2 40" Full HD displays I can't see my need is to play videos and presentations fullscreen on the two 40" screens while being able to control them from the control display. So far I am able to achieve this with a cumbersome set of keyboard shortcuts like: open VLC on control display send to left display with Win + Shift + Left go fullscreen with f and more combinations to restore, get VLC on control display etc. This is really error prone and not professional. Also I wish I have a media player and a slideshow player that can: send the same video / slideshow to the two 40" displays at the same time send two different videos / slideshows, one each 40" display having all controls on the central display, the only one I can see. Any advice welcome, thank you for your support.

• Windows 7: blue faces in VLC... sometimes

  There are a bunch of forum posts about this issue from the last several years but no resolution that I could find. I have the newest VLC installed on Windows 7 with the newest nvidia drivers. Suddenly, VLC plays some videos in such a way as faces are blue. When viewed in another media player, or when looking at the thumbnails, this is not an issue. Other videos are not affected. I've tried resetting VLC options, deleting the VLC folder in the AppData area, etc. I have no other color issues. Does anyone have a fix?

  I am a new user of Ubuntu. When I type df -h in terminal , it gives me list of all storage devices and space usage. In my system I get this. My question is what are the other folders and what is the physical location of these folders if complete memory is taken by the device dev/sda?

But at the same time their site says that Protune is for video only: To record Protune footage, you’ll need to turn Protune ON in your camera’s settings menu. What for is Protune? Photo? Video? Or both?

• Any recommendations on a NAS for a home-super-user?

  Can anyone recommend a good NAS for use in a home-server environment? I would request at least 2, preferably 4 disks, and I am most interested in good to excellent throughput for file-server and backup purposes - don't need any of the fancy media-streaming or -sharing features, that's not of interest to me. For a 4 or more disk solution, support for the various RAID levels (0, 1, 1+0, 5) would be a plus - especially if supported in hardware (rather than just a software emulation). I just need a place to put my collection of data, ISO images, and so forth - and since several external disks (self-built and off-the-shelf) have failed so far, I'm looking into a more reliable solution. • Is there an RSM replacement in Windows 7? (to eject USB and Firewire devices from command line)

  I know Windows XP and previous had an rsm.exe file in the <root>\windows\system32 folder that could be used to manage media. I used this command in batch files and from the command line to eject external disks (iPod, CF cardreader, etc.). This utility appears not to be included in Windows 7, and I wonder if there is some replacement utility that will allow the same thing. I've been unable to find any such thing. I'm aware of the 3rd party utilities; this question is only about what is included with Windows 7.

• Route global shortcuts to pages opened in Firefox

  I like listening to music online on sites like stereomood.com. There is a major problem, however. I can not control the player with my keyboard. And even with a mouse - when I want to play/pause I must activate firefox window, select the tab where music plays and hit play/pause button manually - this is a pain, especially when you play a fullscreen game that can not minimize itself. Thus said, global keyboard shortcuts would be a perfect solution. I understand that different online media players have different controls and each site must be configured individually (like, select button with id 'play' and press it), but I believe that can be done in principle. I also guess that such tricks are impossible without some third-party native app which captures shortcuts and routes them to Firefox window. So, any solutions? Maybe some AutoHotkey hacks or similar.

• Using robocopy and excluding multiple directories

  I'm trying to copy some directories from a server before I restore from backup (my latest backup was corrupt, so I have to use an older one :( ). I'm in the Windows Recovery Environment and have access to the server's file system G:\ and my backup media C:\. But, since I'm more familiar with Linux, I'm having a bit of trouble with the command line in Windows, specifically robocopy. I want to copy multiple directories (maintaining the same directory structure) from G:\ to C:\ while excluding others (namely, the Windows and Program Files folders). I can't figure out the syntax for the /XD option. I was hoping to do something like: robocopy G: C:\backup /CREATE /XD "dir1","dir2", ...

• Windows7: Which app has a notification sound with 3 descending notes?

  Brand new Win7 box loaded with the usual dev tools -- VS2008, Firefox, Chatzilla, Thunderbird, emacs, Pidgin, Putty, iTunes, SharpReader. Every couple of minutes, I get an audio notification consisting of three rising notes, maybe a middle-C-G-F on a piano (I don't have a piano handy, and don't have time to use GarageBand to try to figure it out). Nothing in the notification bar is flashing when this happens. The sound isn't in any of the Windows Sound control panel applets. And it's not in C:\Windows\Media, so it's most likely coming from a non-Microsoft app. Is this familiar to anyone?
