  • Objective C memory management question with NSArray

    I am loading an array with floats like this: NSArray *arr= [NSArray arrayWithObjects: [NSNumber numberWithFloat:1.9], [NSNumber numberWithFloat:1.7], [NSNumber numberWithFloat:1.6], [NSNumber numberWithFloat:1.9],nil]; Now I know this is the correct way of doing it, however I am confused by the retail counts. Each Object is created by the [NSNumber numberWithFloat:] method. This gives the object a retain count of 1 dosnt it? - otherwise the object would be reclaimed The arrayWithObjects: method sends a retain message to each object. This means each object has a retain cont of 2. When the array is de-allocated each object is released leaving them with a retain count of 1. What have I missed?

    This issue is related to running a Java program (jar) dependent on thirdparty jar library even after setting classpath and trying so many other methods by reading articles in Internet. I want to use a thirdparty Pack1.jar (it is not a part of jvm) as dependency of my programme. I do not know where the Pack1.jar file could be in the deployment machine and I want the deployer to specify the path for the thirdparty libraries I have tried the following alternatives in vain Setting the java.class.path programatically String class_path = args[0]; System.setProperty("java.class.path",class_path); Here I am assuming that deployer would supply the classpath as first argument while running the program Setting the CLASSPATH env_var to locate the thirdparty directory While running, using the classpath option java -classpath /path/to/Pack1.jar -jar Pack2.jar I think this would not work because documentation says that classpath is ignored when program is run with "java -jar" Setting the java.ext.dirs programatically. Setting the java.library.path programatically. I do not want to specify the Class-Path in manifest because that takes only relative path and I do not know where the thirdparty library would be kept in deployment machine But I am unable to get the jar running. How can I fix this problem any help please.

    Hi- I have been working on a java client-server program using port sockets. The goal of this program is for the client to take a screenshot of the machine it is running on, break the RGB info of this image down into integers and arrays, then send this info over to the server, where it is reconstructed into a new image file. However, when I run the program I am experiencing the following two bugs: The first number recieved by the server, no matter what its value is according to the client, is always 49. The client only sends(or the server only receives?) the first value, then the program hangs forever. Any ideas as to why this is happening, and what I can do to fix it?     Hi guys (and girls), I have a problem POSTing data via HTTPS in Java. The server response is the same whether or not I send 'query'. Maybe someone can point out what the problem is... Thanks!     Let's say I want to model a cinema. The cinema will have a couple of rooms(for example, 7), where the movies are being played. I wonder how should I design the domain model for this scenario. Should the Cinema class concept concept have a direct association with the 7 rooms? Should the Cinema class concept have an association with a catalog of the 7 rooms? Why? I am having some trouble understanding why in some places I see the first case and in some others I see something like the second case. If instead of rooms, I wanted to depict the relationship between Cinema and: Tickets to sell (today). Tickets already sold (today) Customers in the Cinema database The set of hours at which there are movies playing in a given room in the cinema. Even if a reader is unfamiliar with ZuckerReports or SugarCRM some general advice on Java may be of use to me. I have installed ZuckerReports v1.12 in SugarCRM 5.5.1. I think that the only changes that have been made on the installation in which the report now does not work since the report was last successfully run are the additions of a few custom fields in the Contacts module. These changes should have nothing to do with ZuckerReports. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the ZuckerReports module, but the problem remains. A google search for the warnings given in the error message ie. * log4j:WARN No appenders could be found for logger (net.sf.jasperreports.extensions.ExtensionsEnviron ment). * log4j:WARN Please initialize the log4j system properly. Returns a few links (not specific to ZuckerReports) with tips similar to the following: * log4j.properties or log4j.xml needs to be on the classpath where log4j can find it. I cannot find a file with either of those names anywhere on my server, and yet the report can be run successfully on one of my SugarCRM installations. So I figure log4j must be being configured another way. Can anyone suggest a way to solve this problem? Or explain how I might discover how log4j is configured in ZuckerReports? Or explain how I might compare the working with the non-working installation in order to help find a solution? (I have tried searching for files containing "log4j" in both installations and comparing but all I can find are .jar files (nothing I can read with a text editor), and the .jar files found in each installation appear to be the same.)

  • How to reliably take Java Heap Dumps?

    My team is running into difficulties when trying to take good heap dumps triggered by OutOfMemoryErrors. For specific reasons we are currently taking the dumps with jmap called from a bash script instead of using the HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError flag. We're using a 64-bit 1.6 JVM with a heap size around 3 GB. Our heap dumps fail 90% of the time (guesstimate). Is there anything we can do to improve our odds of getting a clean heap dump we can use to troubleshoot memory problems? I have read that jmap had major issues in Java 1.4 but that those issues should be mostly addressed now.

  • Unusually high dentry cache usage

    Problem A CentOS machine with kernel 2.6.32 and 128 GB physical RAM ran into trouble a few days ago. The responsible system administrator tells me that the PHP-FPM application was not responding to requests in a timely manner anymore due to swapping, and having seen in free that almost no memory was left, he chose to reboot the machine. I know that free memory can be a confusing concept on Linux and a reboot perhaps was the wrong thing to do. However, the mentioned administrator blames the PHP application (which I am responsible for) and refuses to investigate further. What I could find out on my own is this: Before the restart, the free memory (incl. buffers and cache) was only a couple of hundred MB. Before the restart, /proc/meminfo reported a Slab memory usage of around 90 GB (yes, GB). After the restart, the free memory was 119 GB, going down to around 100 GB within an hour, as the PHP-FPM workers (about 600 of them) were coming back to life, each of them showing between 30 and 40 MB in the RES column in top (which has been this way for months and is perfectly reasonable given the nature of the PHP application). There is nothing else in the process list that consumes an unusual or noteworthy amount of RAM. After the restart, Slab memory was around 300 MB If have been monitoring the system ever since, and most notably the Slab memory is increasing in a straight line with a rate of about 5 GB per day. Free memory as reported by free and /proc/meminfo decreases at the same rate. Slab is currently at 46 GB. However, apparently the machine experienced problems nonetheless, and I'm afraid the same will happen again in a few days when Slab surpasses 90 GB. Questions I have these questions: Am I correct in thinking that the Slab memory is always physical RAM, and the number is already subtracted from the MemFree value? Is such a high number of dentry entries normal? The PHP application has access to around 1.5 M files, however most of them are archives and not being accessed at all for regular web traffic. What could be an explanation for the fact that the number of cached inodes is much lower than the number of cached dentries, should they not be related somehow? If the system runs into memory trouble, should the kernel not free some of the dentries automatically? What could be a reason that this does not happen? Is there any way to "look into" the dentry cache to see what all this memory is (i.e. what are the paths that are being cached)? Perhaps this points to some kind of memory leak, symlink loop, or indeed to something the PHP application is doing wrong. The PHP application code as well as all asset files are mounted via GlusterFS network file system, could that have something to do with it? Please keep in mind that I can not investigate as root, only as a regular user, and that the administrator refuses to help. He won't even run the typical echo 2 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches test to see if the Slab memory is indeed reclaimable. Any insights into what could be going on and how I can investigate any further would be greatly appreciated.     As many are painfully aware of, Oracle continues to not only bundle the Java installation with the useless Internet browser toolbar from Ask.com, but also enable its installation by default. In addition to the toolbar, Ask also replaces your favourite search engine in your browser with Ask. Furthermore, the Java installation goes as far as to actually recommend installing this useless junk, meaning that any non IT-savvy person is more than likely to leave it checked and install it (after all, it was enabled by default and the friendly Java installer did recommend it, right?). To add insult to injury, even if you remove the Ask Toolbar, you can be sure to see it again soon, when the next Java update hits you (which seem to happen quite often lately, due to loads of security fixes for Java, but that's another story). I'll duly remove the check-mark to install Ask Toolbar, whenever I update Java, but when supporting my family and friends, it's obvious they don't. How can I prevent the pesky Ask.com Toolbar from being installed in the first place?

  • How can the Private Bytes of a process be significantly less than its effect on the system commit charge?

    On a 64-bit Windows Server 2003, I can see using taskmgr or process explorer that the total commit charge is around 3.5GB, yet when I sum the Private Bytes consumed by each process (by running pslist -m and adding all values under the Priv column) the total comes in at 1.6GB. I know which process seems to be causing this (sqlservr.exe) as when I kill the process, the commit charge drops dramatically. However the process in question is consuming only ~220MB of Private Bytes yet killing the process drops the commit charge by ~1.6GB. How is this possible? How can the commit charge be so significantly greater than Private Bytes, which should represent the amount of committed memory? If some other factor contributes to the commit charge, what is that factor and how can I view its impact in process explorer? Note: I claim that I understand the difference between reserved and committed memory already: my investigations above relate specifically to Private Bytes which includes only committed memory and excludes reserved memory. the Virtual Size of the process in this case is over 4GB, but this should be irrelevant - Virtual Size in procexp represents reserved, not committed memory, and should not contribute to the commit charge. I'm particularly interested in generalised answers to this question: I'm assuming that if sqlservr.exe can behave in this way, that any process potentially could. Further Investigations I notice that pointing Sysinternals VMMap at this process reports a committed "Private Data" of 1.6GB despite Procexp's reported a Private Bytes of 220MB. This is particularly strange given that the documentation for this field in the "Windows® Sysinternals Administrator's Reference" states that: Private Data memory is memory that is allocated by VirtualAlloc and that is not further handled by the Heap Manager or the .NET runtime, or assigned to the Stack category... VMMap’s definition of “Private Data” is more granular than that of Process Explorer’s “private bytes.” Procexp’s “private bytes” includes all private committed memory belonging to the process. i.e. that VMMap's committed "Private Data" should be smaller than procexp's "Private Bytes". Also, after reading the 'Process committed memory' section of Mark Russinovich's excellent Pushing the Limits of Windows: Virtual Memory, he highlights two cases which won't show up in Private Bytes: File mapping views with copy-on-write semantics (however, according to VMMap there is no significant space allocated to Mapped Files). pagefile-backed virtual memory (however, I tried testlimit with the -l flag as suggested, and no significant memory is consumed by pagefile-backed sections)

It seems most services are hosted by svchost.exe processes ( some svchosts.exe processes seems to host tons of services). While it is possible to know which services are hosted by a specific process, I found no way to get information about how much memory a service take.
