• Why Windows Live Photo Gallery stopped displaying thumbnails, and how to fix it?

  I now get this instead, for most (but not all) photos. This is the icon which represents the WLPG application, I think. Some observations: I can see the thumbnails fine in Explorer, which is where a lot of other people have this problem. My C:\ drive may have temporarily filled up at some point recently, but then was cleaned up. Double-clicking on the photo will display it fine, so I know it's not file corruption or permissions issues. Thanks

• Programmatic, script-based, or command line method to change starting program for user on Windows Server 2000/2003?

  I have written an app that we want to distribute to a large number of customers to be used as the shell program when they log onto their server with a particular admin account. I have figured out how to change the starting program by going to Administrative Tools->Computer Management->System Tools->Local Users and Groups->Users, selecting the properties for the user, going to the Environment tab, and changing the program file name under "Starting program" to my new app. But is there a way I could do this with some code that could be sent out and run on all these servers?

• How to monitor a Windows process' working set greater than 4GB?

  Apparently the .NET framework has a bug that prevents working set values above 2GB from accurately being determined. Between 2 and 4GB one can apply some xor-ing calculation to obtain the value, but there's no means of obtaining working set values greater than 4GB (using .Net or WMI) What method can be used - preferably from a PowerShell script - to obtain an accurate measurement of a process' working set when the working set is greater than 4GB? • How I can be alerted if an application is not running in Windows 2008 R2?

  I have a critical application that I need to have it running on my server. Unfortunately it's poorly coded and it keeps crashing. If it's not running it's a big problem, but I can't use a simple application monitor like this because if the app crashes I need to input the configuration again - so I can't just run it again, I have to RDP into the server and manually start it again. So I need a monitor that sends me an email if the process has been stopped. Anyone knows a program that can do that job? I couldn't find it

• Learning AngularJS by Example – The Customer Manager Application

  I’m always tinkering around with different ideas and toward the beginning of 2013 decided to build a sample application using AngularJS that I call Customer Manager. It’s not exactly the most creative name or concept, but I wanted to build something that highlighted a lot of the different features offered by AngularJS and how they could be used together to build a full-featured app. One of the goals of the application was to ensure that it was approachable by people new to Angular since I’ve never found overly complex applications great for learning new concepts. The application initially started out small and was used in my AngularJS in 60-ish Minutes video on YouTube but has gradually had more and more features added to it and will continue to be enhanced over time. It’ll be used in a new “end-to-end” training course my company is working on for AngularjS as well as in some video courses that will be coming out. Here’s a quick look at what the application home page looks like: In this post I’m going to provide an overview about how the application is organized, back-end options that are available, and some of the features it demonstrates. I’ve already written about some of the features so if you’re interested check out the following posts: Building an AngularJS Modal Service Building a Custom AngularJS Unique Value Directive Using an AngularJS Factory to Interact with a RESTful Service Application Structure The structure of the application is shown to the right. The  homepage is index.html and is located at the root of the application folder. It defines where application views will be loaded using the ng-view directive and includes script references to AngularJS, AngularJS routing and animation scripts, plus a few others located in the Scripts folder and to custom application scripts located in the app folder. The app folder contains all of the key scripts used in the application. There are several techniques that can be used for organizing script files but after experimenting with several of them I decided that I prefer things in folders such as controllers, views, services, etc. Doing that helps me find things a lot faster and allows me to categorize files (such as controllers) by functionality. My recommendation is to go with whatever works best for you. Anyone who says, “You’re doing it wrong!” should be ignored. Contrary to what some people think, there is no “one right way” to organize scripts and other files. As long as the scripts make it down to the client properly (you’ll likely minify and concatenate them anyway to reduce bandwidth and minimize HTTP calls), the way you organize them is completely up to you. Here’s what I ended up doing for this application: Animation code for some custom animations is located in the animations folder. In addition to AngularJS animations (which are defined using CSS in Content/animations.css), it also animates the initial customer data load using a 3rd party script called GreenSock. Controllers are located in the controllers folder. Some of the controllers are placed in subfolders based upon the their functionality while others are placed at the root of the controllers folder since they’re more generic:   The directives folder contains the custom directives created for the application. The filters folder contains the custom filters created for the application that filter city/state and product information. The partials folder contains partial views. This includes things like modal dialogs used in the application. The services folder contains AngularJS factories and services used for various purposes in the application. Most of the scripts in this folder provide data functionality. The views folder contains the different views used in the application. Like the controllers folder, the views are organized into subfolders based on their functionality:   Back-End Services The Customer Manager application (grab it from Github) provides two different options on the back-end including ASP.NET Web API and Node.js. The ASP.NET Web API back-end uses Entity Framework for data access and stores data in SQL Server (LocalDb). The other option on the back-end is Node.js, Express, and MongoDB.   Using the ASP.NET Web API Back-End To run the application using ASP.NET Web API/SQL Server back-end open the .sln file at the root of the project in Visual Studio 2012 or higher (the free Express 2013 for Web version is fine). Press F5 and a browser will automatically launch and display the application. Using the Node.js Back-End To run the application using the Node.js/MongoDB back-end follow these steps: In the CustomerManager directory execute 'npm install' to install Express, MongoDB and Mongoose (package.json). Load sample data into MongoDB by performing the following steps: Execute 'mongod' to start the MongoDB daemon Navigate to the CustomerManager directory (the one that has initMongoCustData.js in it) then execute 'mongo' to start the MongoDB shell Enter the following in the mongo shell to load the seed files that handle seeding the database with initial data: use custmgr load("initMongoCustData.js") load("initMongoSettingsData.js") load("initMongoStateData.js") Start the Node/Express server by navigating to the CustomerManager/server directory and executing 'node app.js' View the application at http://localhost:3000 in your browser. Key Features The Customer Manager application certainly doesn’t cover every feature provided by AngularJS (as mentioned the intent was to keep it as simple as possible) but does provide insight into several key areas: Using factories and services as re-useable data services (see the app/services folder) Creating custom directives (see the app/directives folder) Custom paging (see app/views/customers/customers.html and app/controllers/customers/customersController.js) Custom filters (see app/filters) Showing custom modal dialogs with a re-useable service (see app/services/modalService.js) Making Ajax calls using a factory (see app/services/customersService.js) Using Breeze to retrieve and work with data (see app/services/customersBreezeService.js). Switch the application to use the Breeze factory by opening app/services.config.js and changing the useBreeze property to true. Intercepting HTTP requests to display a custom overlay during Ajax calls (see app/directives/wcOverlay.js) Custom animations using the GreenSock library (see app/animations/listAnimations.js) Creating custom AngularJS animations using CSS (see Content/animations.css) JavaScript patterns for defining controllers, services/factories, directives, filters, and more (see any JavaScript file in the app folder) Card View and List View display of data (see app/views/customers/customers.html and app/controllers/customers/customersController.js) Using AngularJS validation functionality (see app/views/customerEdit.html, app/controllers/customerEditController.js, and app/directives/wcUnique.js) More… Conclusion I’ll be enhancing the application even more over time and welcome contributions as well. • Pros and Cons between learning to program on Windows and Linux and Macs

  I have been studying IT for 2 years and I'm going to graduate soon in this year (if everything goes well). I think it's time for me to choose a path to specialized into some fields of this large industry. Personally, I want to be a game programmer. But to be a game programmer, surely I have to invest my time to study Windows Programming, then DirectX and other programming techniques related to game. On the other hand, Linux seems promising as well. I am not sure about Game Programming on for it, but it seems become an expert for this OS, and by expert it's not about using the OS to become an administrator, but can do further than that, such as understand the OS to its essence and can produce applications for it. However, there's some obstacles in my view for this development path. Many of my friends think that Linux is based on free and open source, and if you follow it, as its name suggested: Free and Open Source, it means we also give away our software free. Otherwise, we will have to find a second job to make living. Currently, I think a viable way to make money on Linux is doing works related to client-server. Another way to developer my career is to become expert in developing business applications for companies. This is more on business, not on specialized IT fields so I am not really interested. Another alternative is programming on mobile devices, such as iPhone, Android and it seems very promising and easier to approach. Another way is to become a computer scientist and research on academic subjects such as AI, human-computer interaction, but this is far beyond my reach, so I won't invest my time on it until I feel I am experienced enough. That's all I can think of for now. I may miss a lot of things, so I need more opinions as input to get the big picture of the industry for my career path.

• Windows 8 "Upgrade Offer" eligibilty when running the Consumer Preview in a VM?

  If I have a VM running Windows 8 Consumer/Release Preview, am I allowed to take advantage of the Windows 8 upgrade offer, and install it on that machine? I would have assumed not...as there was never a licensed version of XP SP3 through to Windows 7 installed in that VM. It was a clean installation of the Consumer Preview into a VM. My confusion comes from the notes at the bottom of the download page for the Upgrade offer which states: Offer valid from October 26, 2012 until January 31, 2013 and is for individuals and small businesses needing to upgrade up to five devices. If you are a business customer looking to upgrade more than five devices to Windows 8 Pro, contact your Microsoft partner for more information. To install Windows 8 Pro, customers must be running Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 Consumer Preview, or Windows 8 Release Preview. I am assuming it's not possible and i'll need to purchase the System Builder edition to install within a VM? My guess is that you can use your downloaded upgrade offer only if you updated Windows 7 to the release preview, and therefore had the Windows 7 license on the machine, I used the serial number from the Microsoft Website when downloading the Release Preview, and did a clean install, so there was never a Windows 7 license on the VM. I have MSDN for development purposes, but I am looking to run in a VM for personal use as well, so my MSDN license is not valid for that particular use.

• Should a newcomer to Perl learn both Perl 5 and 6?

  Hello! I have started playing around with Perl 5 lately, and it seems very interesting. I would like to spend some time learning it more in depth when I can. My question, since Perl 6 is slowly taking place (I believe...) and is said to break backward compatibility, is this: am I better learning Perl 5 and then Perl 6, or is learning Perl 6 directly a better time investment according to you? If the changes from Perl 5 to 6 are making it hard to understand Perl 5, I should certainly start with Perl 5 to be able to read "old" scripts, then check Perl 6. There is also the "Perl 6 is not yet completely released" problem. I know there's an early adopter implementation for Perl 6, but if Perl 6 isn't officially released before some more years, I'll stick to 5 for now. I would certainly like some insight on this. Feel free to discuss related stuff. My interest in scripting languages is fairly new. Thanks!

• How much Ruby should I learn before moving to Rails?

  Just a quick question.. I can never get a definitive answer when googling this, either. Some people say you can learn Rails without knowing any Ruby, but at some point you'll run into a brick wall and wish you knew Ruby and will have to go back to learn it..and some say to learn the "basics" of Ruby before learning Rails and it will make your life that much easier.. My current knowledge is low. I'm not a beginner, but I'm not pro, either. I went through the Learn Python The Hard Way online book in about a month, but I stopped once I got to the OOP side of Python (I know booleans, elif/if/else/statements, for loops, while loops, functions) I agree with learning the "basics" of Ruby before learning Rails, but what exactly are the "basics" of Ruby? Would I need to learn the whole OOP side of Ruby before I went on to Rails? Or would I just need to learn the Ruby syntax up to where I learned Python (booleans, elif/if/else/statements, for loops, while loops, functions) before I went on to Rails? Thanks!

• How to focus on one topic? [closed]

  I have a huge problem while reading computer books. Every couple pages I'll end up googling something I want to learn more about, but then I'll find something on that page that I'll want to learn more about and google that (sometimes programming related, sometime hardware related). Normally after wasting around 3 hours going into different subjects I'll return to the original text only to repeat the process a few pages later. Any advice for sticking to one subject and learning that in-depth? I have tons of programming books I've read half-way through since I'll become interested in other languages/topics (not that I'm not interested in the books I've started). Also, what would be worth focusing on in depth? I've gone into Python in the most depth but for classes I'm learning Java and assembly (ARM and Motorola 68000). Also, I've taken a class on C++. Lately I've been spending most of my time learning about Linux instead of programming though. I'm not sure what would be worth focusing on the most to get a job. In other words, how can you focus on one topic and not let curiosity about everything else get in the way? Thanks in advance, Brian

  Hello, i am currently learning Java and PHP as I have some projects from university, which require me to apply both languages. Specifically, a Java GUI application, connecting to a MySQL database and a web application that will be implemented in PHP/MySQL. I have started learning the MVC pattern, Struts, Spring and I am also learning PHP with zend. My first question is: How can I find employment as a programmer/software engineer? The reason I ask is because I have sent my CV into many companys, but all of them stated that I required work experience. I really need some guidance on how to improve my career opportunites. At present, I work on my own and haven't worked in collaboration with anyone on a particular project. I'm assuming most people create projects and submit them along with their CVs. My second question is: Everyone has to make a start from somewhere, but what if this somewhere doesn't come? What do I need to do to create the circumstances where I can easily progress forward? • How do you keep down your urge to learn many things [closed]

  One of the difficulties i have is to lower my urge to learn new things (Languages, tools, frameworks etc.). I know it's good to stay the bleeding edge, but at the same time i want to learn things properly. I really see that i need to strike a balance between staying bleeding edge and knowing things properly. For example: Before choosing Arch (Desktop), Ubuntu(Server) and Knoppix(Portable) -- depending on situation -- as favourite distributions. Virtually i have tried all popular linux distributions. You name any popular linux (Redhat, Ubuntu, Arch, Suse, Knoppix, Slax, Slackware) i have tried it for some time. In fact i have spent few years experimenting the operating systems. Before choosing Python, Javascript (nodejs). I have tried all the languages i cameacross Scala, Haskell, Erlang, Ruby, Python, Perl, Scheme. Same applies for database. All popular db RDBMS (Oracle, Mysql, Postgres, SQLite[Favourite] etc) and NoSQL (Mongo, Couch, Neo4j etc.). Advantages i see: We get a overall picture of the technologies/tools/languages. It's useful to select the right tool for the job. We develop a taste and choose the One we like. Disadvantages: I feel that i spend somuch time and see a need to strike a balance. In summary, for e.g. If i see a blog post in HackerNews about CofeeScript i will try it out irrespective of what i am currently learning (Say Haskell). I switch back to learning Haskell, then again i see DART i check it out. And this continues.. Effectively i take more time to learn Haskell, but learnt about other new stuff on the way. The quetion i have is how do you strike a balance between staying bleeding edge and learning properly.

• Android: Not able to experiment on own?

  I have just started learning Android App Development a few days ago, with prior knowledge of C/C++, HTML and CSS. This is the situation I am facing Repeatedly: I am learning from a Video Tutorial Series, after each video, or each few videos, I say myself: Let's use what I have just learnt in the simple (and also "meaningless") app that I have made so far by watching the tutorials. I start implementing it, but then after a few minutes, I realize that I cannot do it because I do not know a few other syntax related to the particular thing, (or) I do not know whether these things can be combined with these other things by the use of . (dot). Whatever I try, I get either an error in eclipse or "Sorry...the app com.example.simple has stopped unexpectedly...." when the app runs. Then I search StackOverflow, Google and learn that what I want to implement requires learning about a few more classes, syntax and creating a few more java classes. I am not able to experiment on my own. Is it normal? Is it the HARD-WAY in which one is supposed to learn? Should I first learn Java and then come back to Android - would that be helpful?

  I keep getting this error when trying to install TortoiseSVN on Windows 7. All Windows-help documents refer to Windows XP for this error code and they don't work with Windows 7. What does this message mean? Note: my version number is TortoiseSVN-1.6.7.18415-win32-svn-1.6.9 EDIT: just tried installing the latest stable of TortoiseGit(Link, 32-bit), same problem.

  i have a video that i cannot render in Graph Edit: GSpot cannot render: and AVISynth's DirectShowSource cannot open: And yet Windows Media Player (12) can play it fine. How can i figure out the filters that Windows Media Player is using, when DirectShow itself cannot render the file? i tried running GraphEdit as an adminstrator and connecting to a remote graph, but Windows Media Player does not register its graph in the running objects table: Related question: How can i access a file in AviSynth that Windows Media Player can play, but DirectShow cannot?

  I have a shared printer on Windows XP desktop. When trying to install printer on a network laptop using Windows 7, I get a driver not found on network message. The printer OEM does not have a specific driver for Windows 7, they say to use the Windows 7 driver. I can install the printer as a local printer to the laptop. It does find the driver on the laptop, but I can't install it from the shared desktop.

  We have a client who wishes to send files to us via SFTP (citing that FTP is inherently insecure). We have a Windows Environment (Windows 2003 Server). Currently, I'm reviewing copssh (OpenSSH for Windows, http://www.itefix.no/i2/copssh), and am looking for alternatives, or thoughts on copssh or any other SFTP option for Windows. The simpler to setup and administer, the better. I have never setup an SFTP host, before, so I'm curious what you all would recommend.

  I have a perl script which is compiled using pp, to be run as a windows service on windows 7 machines. I looked at the thread http://www.perlmonks.org/index.pl?node%5Fid=230377 but of little use because most of them weren't clear and the solutions suggested in that were to create executables and not actually for running as a windows 7 service. I tried putting my compiled exe in the scheduled tasks of windows but I think its not able to run for some reason. How do I debug this?

• Puppet configuration file on Windows

  I'm running puppet on windows as an admin (testing on windows 7, even though it is not officially supported). When I install puppet following the windows installation instructions, no puppet.conf file is generated in C:/ProgramData/PuppetLabs/puppet/etc. I can run puppet agent --genconfig to create one, but regardless of what values I put in there, it doesn't seem to respect them. Is this just a puppet/windows issue? Or am I doing something wrong?

• does bootcamp provide the best drivers for windows 7, or should i install the ones windows 7 suggest

  I'm running windows 7 via bootcamp on my MBP (the model that was newest in summer 2009). Bootcamp is up to date. Windows 7 just suggested I install a new driver for my nvidia card. However, I was under the impression bootcamp provided the most optimal drivers for windows 7 to run on my MBP's hardware. Should I stick with what bootcamp gives for my video driver, or update to the one windows 7 suggests?
