  • How does assembly language interact with something like the Internet?

    So I was thinking about languages the other day, and it struck me that any program written in a compiled language that interacts with the Internet is then translated into assembly that has to interact with the Internet. I've just begun learning a bit of x86 assembly to help me understand C++ a bit better, and I'm baffled by how something so low-level could do something like access the Internet. I'm sure the full answer to this question is much more than would fit in a SO answer, but could somebody give me maybe a basic summary?

    I have done a couple research jobs in Bio-informatics and I have used Matlab for them. Matlab had a lot of powerful tools and was easy to use. I did thinks with genome sequencing and predicting metabolic pathways. I am wondering what other people think is best? or there might not be one specific language but a few that lend themselves best to Bio-informatics work that is math heavy and deals with a large amount of data.

  • Periodic clicking sound from PC speaker

    After an update some months ago, my laptop has begun making a low, repeated clicking sound every few seconds. It is not being generated through the regular sound system, as altering the volume and even muting the sound does not make any difference. My regular audio works fine, by the way, so I am guessing this is some sort of PC speaker, since I cannot hear the click when I listen through regular headphones. Strangely, when I open the sound settings dialog the click magically disappears. I don't need to change any settings; if I simply leave the dialog open in the background then the problem disappears. Any ideas what this could be?     Basically, I know how to create graph data structures and use Dijkstra's algorithm in programming languages where side effects are allowed. Typically, graph algorithms use a structure to mark certain nodes as 'visited', but this has side effects, which I'm trying to avoid. I can think of one way to implement this in a functional language, but it basically requires passing around large amounts of state to different functions, and I'm wondering if there is a more space-efficient solution.
