    What is the cleanest, most reliable way to run a Windows application as a service without touching its code? Use case: NorthScale's 64-bit Windows version of memcached runs as a generic application. I'd like to stick it into a Windows 2003 or 2008 Service so I can start/stop/restart/etc it through the standard interface.

  • SQL Server 2008, Kerberos and SPN

    Hi, I installed SQL Server 2008 on a Win XP SP2 workstation in a AD domain and configured to run with the "Network Service" account. In my error log I have the following message (Event ID:26037): The SQL Server Network Interface library could not register the Service Principal Name (SPN) for the SQL Server service. **Error: 0xd, state: 13**. Failure to register an SPN may cause integrated authentication to fall back to NTLM instead of Kerberos. This is an informational message. Further action is only required if Kerberos authentication is required by authentication policies. The strange thing is that I have another SQL Server 2008 installation in a Win 2003 server configured in the same way and there I do not have this message. My questions are: Does anybody know if there are limitations with Kerberos on Windows XP and SQL Server? Why the SPN is not automatically registered on Win XP when I use the "Network Service" but it works on Windows 2003 server? THANKS!

    It appears there is a memory leak in the Status property of the SMO Database class. Using the code below with SQL 2005 SMO libraries works fine, but as soon as you use SQL 2008, the memory leak appears.... Any other good way of getting the database staus in SQL 2008?     Ok, so I'm trying to select an amount of rows from a column that holds the value 3, but only if there are no rows containing 10 or 4, if there are rows containing 10 or 4 I only want to show those. What would be a good syntax to do that? So far I've been attempting a CASE WHEN statement, but I can't seem to figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (My database is in an MS SQL 2008 server)

    I am not able to remove sql server 2008 from my machine. I installed it in the past as a part of the installation of an application, this installed the runtime of sql server 2008 SP0. But now I cannot uninstall. I tried to use the setup of SP0 and even of SP2 but it was not able to uninstall, by giving fatal errors when it does the preliminary checks. This means that the only option I have is format my machine? I cannot even intall a new instance, something is really corrupted. Is it a way to remove it manually?

    asp website with access database freezes for 30-60 seconds intermittently. The site is on an internal 2008 server. About 25 users access the site simultaneously. Is it just the limits of access or can i do something to improve the situation? change any timeout/refresh settings anywhere? or could it be a problem with the network?

    I am using SQL Server 2008 & 2005 (Express). I'm trying to extract part of an alpha numeric string from a varchar field. RIGHT(str_field,3) yields null values but substring(str_field, len(str_field)-2, len(str_field)) gives the right value. left(str_field,7) gives the expected values. What gives? I would have thought that RIGHT(str_field,3) and substring(str_field, len(str_field)-2, len(str_field)) are equivalent expressions.

    When I created my database using sql server 2005, i was able to connect and view it in Visual Studio 2008. I then detached the database onto my flash drive. Brought it home to work in VS 2008 - that worked. finally when i detached it from home and brought back to work, it will not open. It is saying that this version of sql server is not compatible with another version. I forget the exact wording of the error, as it was lengthy. any help you guys and provide would be very helpful! And I can't move the logic to two different stored procedures. Is there a way to encapsulate all this parameters to a class or struct and pass it as a stored procedure parameter? Can I use SQL CLR. Are there other ways?

TABLE: Accounts ID (int, PK, Identity) AccountType (int, PK) Username (varchar) Password (varchar) I have created a composite key out of ID and AccountType columns so that people can have the same username/password but different AccountTypes. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18452)" What steps do I need to take to fix this?     I have searched the internet thoroughly for this type of issue, there were responses but hasn't really found a concrete solution yet. I have an application which makes use of SQL Server 2008 R2 and thus it makes connections with a database file which I have set up. The application executes successfully, makes connections with the database and retrieves/inserts/updates data to and fro the database. However when I come to create a deployment project i.e. a setup project, I fail to transfer my database files to other computers and make database connections. I have checked the SQL Server 2008 prerequisite in the publish settings of the application and has also included the database files. Can anyone suggest the best way to this type of setup? Thanks
