• MS SQL Server 2000 tables

  We currently have an MS SQL Server 2000 database with one table containing data for multiple users. The data is keyed by memberid which is an integer field. The table has a clustered index on memberid. The table is now about 200 million rows. Indexing and maintenance are becoming issues. We are debating splitting the table into one table per user model. This would imply that we would end up with a very large number of tables potentially upto the 2,147,483,647, considering just positive values. My questions: 1) Does anyone have any experience with a MS SQL Server (2000/2005) installation with millions of tables? 2) What are the implications of this architecture with regards to maintenance and access using Query Analyzer, Enterprise Manager etc. 3) What are the implications to having such a large number of indexes in a database instance. • Zip Code to City/State and vice-versa in a database?

  I'm new to SQL and relational databases and I have what I would imagine is a common problem. I'm making a website and when each user submits a post they have to provide a location in either a zip code or a City/State. What is the best practice for handling this? Do I simply create a Zip Code and City and State table and query against them or are there ready made solutions for handling this? I'm using SQL Server 2005 if it makes a difference. I need to be able to retrieve a zip code given a city/state or I need to be able to spit out the city state given a zip code.

• C++ - Opening a file inside a function using fopen

  I am using Visual Studio 2005 (C++). I am passing a string into a function as a char array. I want to open the file passed in as a parameter and use it. I know my code works to an extent, because if I hardcode the filename as the first parameter it works perfectly. I do notice if I look at the value as a watch, the value includes the address aside the string literal. I have tried passing in the filename as a pointer, but it then complains about type conversion with __w64. As I said before it works fine with "filename.txt" in place of fileName. • double authentication issue on IIS / Report Server (SQL server 2008)

  Hi, On a 2003 server box, with SQL server 2008 installed (ReportServer deployed in IIS mode), I've got a virtual directory within IIS with it's security set to 'windows authentication', with the following html code: <body> <h1>test</h1> <iframe src="/reportserver" witdh="50%" height="50%" /> </body> From the outside, I've got a first login/pwd box displayed to access the html code, then a second one to display the content of the iframe. On the same type of server, but with SQL Server 2005, I don't have this issue (i.e. only one login box). My thought is that the first token should give acces to both the page and the iframe, isn't it? Any hints on how to setup the reportserver to fix this? thanks.

• How does one SELECT block another?

  I'm looking at output of SP_WhoIsActive on SQL Server 2005, and it's telling me one session is blocking another - fine. However they both are running a SELECT. How does one SELECT block another? Shouldn't they both be acquiring shared locks (which are compatible with one another)? Some more details: Neither session has an open transaction count - so they are stand-alone. The queries join a view with a table. They are complex queries which join lots of tables and results in 10,000 or so reads. Any insight much appreciated.

• Win32 Thread Exits Unexpectedly

  Hello, I'm writing a C++ application. I realized that one of my worker threads may terminate unexpectedly. The (VS 2005) debug log says: The thread 'Win32 Thread' (0x5d98) has exited with code -858993460 (0xcccccccc). I surrounded all the worker thread code with a try/catch block. So, if the reason was an exception, I would catch it. But I can't: try{ ... Connection* conn = connectionPool->getConnection(); // unexpected exit occurs here ... } catch(exception& e) { ... } I have ten threads running concurrently, and only one of them gets crashed after some time, while the others continue running (and getting new [OCCI] connections). Is there an exception type that is not caught by "exception"? Or what do I not know about threads/exceptions? Thanks.

• Where is the windows app installed + .NET + VS2005

  I deployed a windows application in the following website http://StagingServer/MyProgs/MPP/ on my intranet site, using the Publish Wizard of VS 2005... I accepted all defaults (including Offline support). My users were also able to install the same from the path specified. But when I try to find out the exact location of the EXE in the client, it is not pointing anywhere. I also tried a file search but in vain. Initially I thought the application is running from the server itself, but we were able to start the app, even when the server is down (ofcourse it takes more time to search for updates initially). Ps : The app is showing even in control panel... Raja

• Sort database entries via a dropdown list

  Hello! I'm curious if anyone could possibly help me, because I can't find anything exactly related to it anywhere, and it's driving me nuts. I'd like to have a dropdown list on a page, that will give the visitor the option to sort all entries by year. I have entries from i.e. 2001, 2005, 2009, 2010. The years should be displayed in the dropdown, so the visitor can easily just select all entries dated 2001 if they want. The year for each entry is located in the one database table I have. In other words, I simply want a "sort by" dropdown that you can see on pretty much any shopping site nowadays. But with set years. Thanks in advance for any replies!

• SSIS - SharePoint to SQL without Adapter Addin?

  Hey all, Im looking to Extract a SharePoint List (WSS 2.0) to a SQL(2005) Table using SQL Server Integrated Services. First off I am aware of the "adapter" that does this from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd365137.aspx however I'm just wondering for compatibility purposes if it can't just be done "out of the box". There are only a limited number of "Data Flow Sources" to select as alternatives and I am unsure if any of these would be able to work in a similar way either directly to SharePoint or via SharePoints web services (e.g. http://server_name/_vti_bin/Lists.asmx) From the list of these sources it looks like the best option would be the OLE DB connector, but not sure how it would do this. Any help you have would be great, Mark

  In MS SQL Server Management Studio 2005, running this code EXEC('SELECT * FROM employees WHERE employeeID = ' + CAST(3 AS VARCHAR)) gives this error: Incorrect syntax near 'CAST' However, if I do this, it works: DECLARE @temp VARCHAR(4000) SET @temp = 'SELECT * FROM employees WHERE employeeID = ' + CAST(3 AS VARCHAR) EXEC(@temp) I found an explanation here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1044831/t-sql-cannot-pass-concatenated-string-as-argument-to-stored-procedure According to the accepted answer, EXEC can take a local variable or a value as its argument, but not an expression. However, if that's the case, why does this work: DECLARE @temp VARCHAR(4000) SET @temp = CAST(3 AS VARCHAR) EXEC('SELECT * FROM employees WHERE employeeID = ' + @temp) 'SELECT * FROM employees WHERE employeeID = ' + @temp sure looks like an expression to me, but the code executes with no errors.

• Suggestions for a C++ IDE?

  I know this is is a shifty question and really isn't easy to answer, but bare with me. For a while now I have been using Eclipse and doing Java programming. Now that I reach a point where I'm comfortable in Java, I wish to move on back into C++ and actually make something more than a single class that prints to terminal; and work in OpenGL :). So I wonder if anybody has a recomendation of IDE's that resemble or are as fluid as Eclipse? I am aware that Eclipse has a C++ plugin, but it really doesn't feel user friendly (at least to a pampered java programmer!). I have (I think I still have it?) a copy of Visual Studio 2005, but want to see if anyone has any better ideas. Thanks ~Aedon

There is a ASP.NET site in the domain using the Window Authentication. Now, we need read the data from the sql server and display them using SqlDataSource and GridView. But most of users do not have the direct permission to access the database. Is there any solution to get the data from database and display them on the site without granting users permission? • Windows Installer (C#) error code 2869

  I have a project, in VS 2005, which has a console application and a setup project associated to install the application. I also have an installer class in the console application that the setup project will use to do some validation before installation. Those tasks are checking the database connection string and checking some directory locations to make sure they exist prior to installation. I am getting an error code of 2869 when I try to install the application. All the code is written in C#. I have googled for this error code on Windows XP, but only found articles that deal with Vista and Windows 7. Any ideas what might be happening? Is there a workaround?

  In SQL Server 2005 tablename can be used to distinguish which table you're referring to: UPDATE LinkedServer.database.user.tablename SET val=u.val FROM localtable u WHERE tablename.ID=u.ID In SQL Server 2000 this results in Server: Msg 107, Level 16, State 2 The column prefix 'tablename' does not match with a table name or alias name used in the query. Trying UPDATE LinkedServer.database.user.tablename SET val=u.val FROM localtable u WHERE LinkedServer.database.user.tablename.ID=u.ID results in Server: Msg 117, Level 15, State 2 The number name 'LinkedServer.database.user.tablename' contains more than the maximum number of prefixes. The maximum is 3. And, of course, UPDATE LinkedServer.database.user.tablename SET val=u.val FROM localtable u WHERE ID=u.ID results in Server: Msg 209, Level 16, State 1 Ambiguous column name 'ID'. (In fact searching on "The number name contains more than the maximum number of prefixes. The maximum is 3." I found the answer, but I've typed up this question and I'm going to post it! :-) )

  Hi all I am using sql server 2005 reporting service to generate report base on a database. There are two columns which are datetime type ColumnA and ColumnB. The report would display a KPI image on this report by comparing these two columns.Below is the expression for selecting image SWITCH(DateDiff("d",Fields!ColumnA.Value,Fields!ColumnB.Value)<0,"kpi_r", DateDiff("d",Fields!ColumnA.Value,Fields!ColumnB.Value)>0,"kpi_g", DateDiff("d",Fields!ColumnA.Value,Fields!ColumnB.Value)=0,"kpi_y") For most of the records, the image is correct. Only for one record, the result is very strange. For this record ColumnA=2010-04-23 08:00:00 ColumnB=2010-04-22 17:00:00 It would display kpi_r, it displayed kpi_y. I have checked the value of DateDiff(d,Fields!ColumnA.Value,Fields!ColumnB.Value) in the SSMS, the value is -1. Why does it display kpi_y? Does anyone meet this problem before? Best Regards,

  OK, I am a big fan of WPF, and while it is large area to fully understand, Microsoft has been great in posting loads of training video at http://windowsclient.net/learn/videos_wpf.aspx However with the release of 2010 it all seams to have gone very quiet. I expected a lot of the support to be updated for 2010 and I also expected a lot of new videos on the best way to use the new features in 2010. Currently I find myself working through videos based on 2008 (or even 2005) and trying to apply them to 2010. Don't get me wrong it not that I mind doing this, it just that I fear I may be learning methods which have better or different solutions in 2010. It is just me expecting too much of Microsoft, or have I missed out on a new website?

• Build turns partially transparent image pixels black

  I'm very new to C# and I've run into a problem and haven't been able to solve it. I have a row of buttons that have .png images assigned to them. The images are in .png format to allow transparency, and smoothing the edges in GIMP leaves some semi-transparent pixels. I've set the Image List Toolbar (imglToolbar)'s properties to recognize "Transparent" as the designated color to show up as transparent. I'm working in Visual Studio 2005. The strange thing is that everything looks great when I'm viewing the Visual C# form preview window. The icons look exactly as they should. However, once I actually build the project, the buttons treat every semi-transparent pixel near the edge of the image as if it's black.   I have a legacy C++ application with a deep graph of #includes. Changes to any header file often cause recompiles of seemingly unrelated source files. The application is built using a Visual Studio 2005 solution (sln) file. Can MSBUILD be invoked in a way that it reports which dependency(ies) are causing a source file to be recompiled? Is there any other tool that might be able to help? NOTE: I'm only looking for a tool to tell me why a file would be rebuilt, not some restrospective magic telling me why it was rebuilt.

Typically it'll see maybe 200 inserts or deletes or updates at a time. Sometimes there is a mixture of updates, inserts and deletes. Would it be a good idea to separate the queries by type (i.e. group inserts together, then updates and then deletes)? I am running this against an ms access database and using vb.net 2005. • SQL Server missing tables and stored procedures

  I have an application on a client's site that processes data each night, last night SQL Server 2005 gave the error "Could not find stored procedure 'xxxx'". The stored procedure does exist in the database, has the right permission as far as I can tell, the application runs fine in other nights as well. In previous occasions, the SQL Server has also gave error saying 'database object not found', and refers to a table in the database that does exists. So, on rare occasions, the server thinks certain stored procedures and tables does not exist in the database. The objects it refers to are often ones that are frequently used. Is the database somehow corrupted, is there some sort of repair/health check I can do?

• TFS: How do I view .cs files in the VS IDE when viewing details of a shelveset?

  For our code review process we open the details of a shelveset to see all files that have been worked on. Right clicking and choosing "Compare" works great for existing ( modified ) files. But, when a file has been added I just want to view the file. Double clicking ( or right click - view ) opens .cs ( and .sql )files in notepad. When I try to open a .PRC file ( extension for our stored procedures ) I get a prompt that allows me to choose what program to use for viewing. Does anyone know how to get this prompt to show up for .cs files ( and all other files, for that matter ) Thanks!
