• What resources do I need to start developing games? [on hold]

  I'm in a unique situation here. I'm only just now a sophomore in high school and I've had a passion for gaming and technology since I was a child. I picked up python at age 9 and have learned 3 other languages since then. I never was good at art or such things, but I can imagine amazing logic devices to carry out game elements I would like to try. I've been researching and finding very vague advice on what needs to be present in order for me to develop. I've attempted at many things, but they never become more than a text-based mess. What education in specific would I need to advance in the game industry? Workflows are never clear to me. I've watched videos on Valve, Zenimax, and many others on how to get from an idea to a product. I've never gotten a finished product, but I've always had the idea clearly in my head.

  I am a software developer(sharepoint developer) with total 3 years of experience.Though using out of the box sharepoint excites me, i have aversion to code. i kinda cant put my brains in coding. i have my eyes on MBA now(only reason is to get rid of code). I wanted to rethink on this and need your expert advice and suggestions. As i am working currently in a hot skill(sharepoint 2013) technology, is it a good thought to go ahead and do MBA and change my career, or should i start liking what i do?? • Shouldn't all source code be plain text? [on hold]

  Some developing environment/languages save the source code you write in a binary/propietary format that you cannot see or edit with a generic text editor. I'm not talking about compiled code, but the source code. An example could be PowerBuilder and Oracle Forms. It's ok you use proprietary technology if you want, but not being able to open the source code you wrote, in a simple editor, if only to read it, seems like a very strict form of vendor lock-in. Also this prevents you from using text-based version controls that can show you the difference between two versions in a line-by-line base. If the code is plain text, you don't need a license in order to just open it, see it and learn from it. Should it be a golden rule to avoid vendor lock-in to avoid technologies that save your source code to anything but plain text files ?

• Branding Changes for Java EE6

  Hi Everyone, As we move the Java EE6 exams from beta to production, you may notice that we have made a slight change in the branding. Instead of being branded Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), these new credentials are now branded Oracle Certified Expert (OCE). One area where we use the Expert brand is for credentials where the technology is advanced or broader than the path based credential requires. Some are high-end add-on certifications, and others have significant additional technological breadth. In these cases, the Expert brand is an indication that someone is tested in more advanced or in-depth skills - beyond the traditional path-based certification. A few examples are RAC Expert for DBAs, or SQL Expert - also for DBAs. Because (1) all of the Java EE6 credentials require that candidates become certified first in Java SE6, and (2) many people earn more than one Java EE credential, we felt that the Expert branding would be more appropriate. • No useful DVB-T card found

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 3.2.0-26 kernel and I just added a DVB-T card. I did install the media_build as in (http://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/How_to_Obtain,_Build_and_Install_V4L-DVB_Device_Drivers) After that the Restricted Drivers appeared on the screen and I installed the Firmware for DVB Cards. lsusb shows Bus 002 Device 005: ID 048d:9005 Integrated Technology Express, Inc. which is my card. lsmod shows these things regarding dvb dvb_usb_it913x 22173 0 dvb_usb 32369 1 dvb_usb_it913x dvb_core 110010 1 dvb_usb rc_core 26343 2 dvb_usb_it913x,dvb_usb Nevertheless there is no /dev/dvb on my linux and Kaffeine does not find the TV turner. Can anybody help me installing my TV Card? Thanks

• What is the difference between all-static-methods and applying a singleton pattern?

  I am making a database to store information about the users of my website (I am using stuts2 and hence Java EE technology). For the database I'll be making a DBManager. Should I apply singleton pattern here or rather make all it's methods static? I will be using this DBManager for basic things like adding, deleting and updating User profiles. Along with it, I'll use for all other querying purposes, for instance to find out whether a username already exists and to get all users for administrative purposes and stuff like that. My questions What is the benefit of singleton pattern? Which thing is most apt here? All static methods or a singleton pattern? Please compare both of them. P.S. The database is bigger than this. Here I am talking only about the tables which I'll be using for storing User Information.

• How can I use a CanoScan N640Pex scanner over a USB/parallel cable?

  I have an old CanoScan N640Pex flat bed scanner and a USB-to-parallel port cable through which I can connect it to my PC. Unfortunately neither Simple Scan nor XSane detect the scanner. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 (plus updates and backports) with kernel 3.2.0-31-generic. dmesg tells me this when I plus the cable in: [256411.641910] usb 7-1: new full-speed USB device number 10 using uhci_hcd [256411.872392] usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 10 if 0 alt 1 proto 2 vid 0x067B pid 0x2305 [256411.872417] usbcore: registered new interface driver usblp lsusb shows this device for my cable: Bus 007 Device 010: ID 067b:2305 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2305 Parallel Port The device node created is /dev/usb/lp0 crw-rw---- 1 root lp 180, 0 Sep 9 17:46 /dev/usb/lp0 There is no extra information from any of these commands when I attach the scanner to the cable and power it on, though. I suspect I might need to change something in /etc/sane.d/canon_pp.conf, but I have no idea what to put for the ieee1284 line, since there is pretty much zero documentation for that parameter. So how can I get it to work?

• Is C++ indispensible for AAA game engines, as long as we have console-platform games? [closed]

  C++ has remained the industry standard for game engines much because of its features.. The primary reasons are(afaik): Technical reasons - High performance, native runtime, portibility, negligible latency, and more recently concurrency. Socio-Technical reasons - Availability of Libraries, Legecy stuff, most scripting languages on games have a good C api (ex lua), Good IDEs and most recently improved Development time.(C++11) Social reasons - People know C++, Licenced technologies, and battle proven. Does this make C++ for game engines indispensible, so long we have game consoles? Would not, the above features make me implement new graphics technology in C++ only? Edit: Will learning C++ garuntee me a job as a game engine dev In the future? I want to master every aspect of the language, but I already know C# and python. Should I allocate my time learning C++. I want to be a game engine developer.

  I know how to create a hotspot when connected to a wired network, but when I am using internet from a WiFi connection, this disconnects the wireless connection the moment I activate the hotspot. In Windows I can use Connectify Hotspot, which enables me to share the internet connection from the same wireless adapter as I am creating an access point on.
