  • How to build a function on the fly in java?

    I'm parsing a text file that is being mapped to some java code like such: public void eval(Node arg) { if(arg.data.equals("rand")) { moveRandomly(); } else if(arg.data.equals("home")) { goHome(); }//snip.. This is going to need to be re-evaluated about a thousand times and I'd rather not have to traverse the whole thing every time. Is there any way to make this traversal once and then have it be a function that is called every other time?

  • I would like to build a Java Web Application. What's the quickest start?

    I am a reasonably competent programmer, with about 11 years experience. I particularly like Ruby/Rails and ActionScript. And Java is not too hard. I'd like to develop a web application in Java in order to leverage things like BlazeDS and learn some new tricks with regard to JBoss and the whole Java App thing. But I'm having trouble - and confused - looking for a smooth start. I don't want to use Grails, thanks, I want to use Pure Java, with whatever Framework you can think of. Spring, Hibernate, lalala, it's cool. Where do I start?

  • .NET How would I build a DAL to meet my requirments?

    Assuming that I must deploy an asp.net app over the following 3 servers: 1) DB - not public 2) 'middle' - not public 3) Web server - public I am not allowed to connect from the web server to the DB directly. I must pass through 'middle' - this is purely to slow down an attacker if they breached the web server. All db access is via stored procedures. No table access. I simply want to provide the web server with a ado dataset (I know many will dislike this, but this is the requirement). Using asmx web services - it works, but XML serialisation is slow and it's an extra set of code to maintain and deploy. Using a ssh/vpn tunnel so that the one connects to the db 'via' the middle server, seems to remove any possible benefit of maintaining 'middle'. Using WCF binary/tcp removes the XML problem, but still there is extra code. Is there an approach that provides the ease of ssh/vpn, but the potential benefit of having the dal on the middle server?     Recently i ran into a complex table implementation, for example: tr1: | td1 | td2 | td3 | tr2: | td1 | td2 | tr3: | td1 | td2 | ... As this example shows, i want td1 are fixed with different width, td3 is also width fixed but at the right, td2 are all width auto to expand when screen radio changed. I'm wondering if there is a way to do this by using CSS?

  • Is it poor practice to build an SQL query using WHERE 1=1 AND ...

    I'm writing a script that builds an SQL query by concatenating the string and adding conditions to the WHERE clause as needed. Would it be better practice to use WHERE 1=1 so that the first condition is satisfied and the script can just concatenate an AND x = 'y' to the query, or should I write the extra code to check if a clause has been added and if not, add the AND ? Confusing question, I know. Let me know if I need to be more clear. Rob

  • Build a JavaScript wrapper for a rails-generated XML API?

    I am working with a large website written in Ruby on Rails. Thanks to the support for REST in Rails 2, the site's business logic is all accessible via a consistent XML API. Now I want to be able to easily write one or more JavaScript frontends to the site that interact with the generated Rails XML API. Ideally, an automated wrapper for the API could be created in JavaScript, since this would minimize the effort required in writing XML processing code for the more than 500 API functions. How, then, can I automatically generate a wrapper around a given XML API in JavaScript so that it's more pleasant to work with? I've worked with solutions of this nature for Java that generate classes and methods to wrap an API, so my current thinking is that I want something of that nature for JavaScript. I'd be open to an alternative take on the problem, though.

    Hi, I'am looking for an easy authentication for my users mostly via facebook, but keeping OpenID and other OAuth alternatives as well. For the case if something will go very bad, I will ask my users to optionally provide their email address, which should be obtained via OpenID or OAuth if possible. The same thing is about their name. I am a newbie in Rails, so I started with Railscasts.com #160 (authlogic) and #170 (authlogic and OpenID), however, I had some problems trying to sign in with my Google Account. As I understand, it will take some effort to adjust #170 for my objectives. On the other hand, there is gem authlogic_rpx which will possibly provide me the needed functionality (see http://rails-authlogic-rpx-sample.heroku.com/signin). What would you do? Is it reasonable to put one more step (RPX) in the authentication logic?

  • How to build a C++ Dll wrapper that catches all exceptions?

    Like the title says, we’re looking for a way to catch all exceptions from a piece of C++ code, and wrap this in a dll. This way we can shield of the application that uses this dll, from any errors occurring in this dll. However, this does not seem possible with C++ under Windows. Example: void function() { try { std::list<int>::iterator fd_it; fd_it++; } catch(...) {} } The exception that occurs is not caught by the standard C++ try/catch block, nor by any SEH translator function set by _set_se_translator(). Instead, the DLL crashes, and the program that uses the DLL is aborted. We compiled with Visual C++ 2005, with the option /SHa. Does anyone know if it’s possible in C++/Win32 to catch these kind of problems and make a rocksolid DLL wrapper?

  • How can my-program.hs get its version number from my-program.cabal at build time?

    I would like my cabalised program to have a --version switch. I would like it to report the same version as is present in the .cabal file. If I have to update the version number separately in my Haskell source code as well as in the .cabal file, I will eventually get them out of sync. So, how can my program, while being compiled under cabal, get its version number from the .cabal file?

  • IOS4 UISplitViewController in Portrait Orientation with RootViewController showing like Landscape

    In IOS 3.2 I was able to display my UISplitViewController side by side like in landscape mode. In IOS 4.2 the RootViewController (MasterView) is not showing up in portrait mode. Does anyone know if we need to display the rootviewcontroll in a popover? Can we display it side by side like how it is in landscape mode? I want to avoid having to click on a button to show the masterview (when in portrait mode)

  • Can I force Perl Devel::Cover to generate a coverage report if I killed the build testcover process

    If I am able to start up Devel::Cover successfully and it starts to collect data in the cover_db directory, can I then kill the process and then after the fact get Devel::Cover or some other utility to process those binary Devel::Cover run files and structure files into the HTML coverage report? To ask the question another way ... Can I use Devel::Cover to get a coverage report for a process that I am unable to stop, other than by killing the process?     Hi, I'm building a C# client app that allows a user to communicate with one or more existing users in a system via an email-like metaphor. I'd like to present the user with a text entry box that auto-completes on known email addresses, and allows multiple delimiter-separated addresses to be entered. Ideally, I'd also like the email addresses to turn into structured controls once they've been entered and recognized. Basically, I'm modeling the UI interaction for adding users after Facebook's model. Are there any Windows Forms controls out there with the ability to do something like this? For general formatted debug output, though, I want to use ::NKDbgPrintfW directly and wonder if someone knows if it compiles to a nop in optimised release builds or if my own macro wrapper around it with #ifdef DEBUG is still needed?

  • What the best way to recover from when your RAID H/W incorrectly thinks a disk is missing

    I have a Windows 7 system with an MSI motherboard (running the latest AMD BIOS) and two of my four disks (not the system boot disk) configured via the Mobo as RAID-1. After a normal system restart today, the RAID BIOS reports that one of the two drives has been disconnected or has failed. It's not really failed; via recovery tools I can verify that if I take the BIOS out of RAID mode. But I can find no way to re-add the second hard disk to the array and rebuild via the BIOS - the only option seems be to delete the array and recreate it, but I've done that once before and it blows away the disk. It's done this once before, however on a subsequent reboot after double-checking the drive cabling (but not changing anything) and it boot up fine. So I think the mobo RAID is a little bit flaky. At this point I would like to remove the RAID drivers, change to AHCI mode and switch over to using a Windows 7 dynamic mirror disk. But the RAID drivers seem somehow deeply bound into the Windows startup - I can't find anything like the good ol' safe-mode in Windows 7. If I boot from the Win 7 install disk in ACHI mode I can use recovery tools to log in to the Windows 7 installation, so the boot drive it seems fine with ACHI mode. Additionally, I can see all my other disks, run chkdsk on them and they seem to be fine. If I try to boot from the HDD in AHCI mode, it just reboots part way through, presumably because the RAID drivers load and conflict with the BIOS being set to AHCI. So: How do I strip the RAID drivers from my Win 7 installation? If I delete the RAID logical disk, will it really delete partitioning information, or is that just a poorly worded message when it says the data on the disk will be deleted? If I disconnect the 2 disks in a RAID array, then delete the logical disk array, and then reconnect and reboot still in RAID mode, will the disks simply revert to RAID single-disks like my other 2 and then maybe I can leave windows with RAID drivers by operate the disks as singles with 2 of them in a Windows dynamic disk mirrored setup? Does Windows 7 have anything like the Windows XP Repair Install, where it will reinstall the O/S binaries from CD, but leave apps and setup alone. I am really hoping I don't have to do a complete reinstall of Windows 7 - the last one, when I upgraded from XP, took me two days to get everything set up and installed.

  • How Can I Programmatically Build a Multi-Page TIFF out of Many Single Page TIFFs, Using Python?

    I've found, via Google, numerous people asking the same question, but no solutions. The Python Image Library (PIL) has tools for stepping through an already existing multi-page TIFF, but nothing about creating them. Libraries would hopefully be available on Windows, for Python 2.6. If there's some freeware out there which will do the trick, I wouldn't mind seeing it, but I was hoping I could accomplish this in Python.
