• Benefits and features of different requirements-management systems and tools available?

  I am looking for a good comparision of different available professional requirement management tools. I am especially interested in the the features available within the different software solutions. Additionally to the "obvious" features I am looking for a proffesional Requirement Management System that supports for: multi-lingual customizable generation of documentation & history (graphs) search features (e.g. fulltext for comments), ordering, priorities version history bi-directional traceability of changes, artefacts, requirements, changes in requirements, etc. Any kind of integration of V-Model XT would be a really-nice-to-have-feature. Besides, I'd like to hear any personal motivated recommendations and/or experiences with different requirement management systems. Any input is highly appreciated. • Displaying google analytics data on my website

  I sale adspace for my websites directly to the advertisers. I ad page where I want to show google anaylytics information that update automatically without me having to manually update everyday or every month. Something like this: http://wstats.net/en/website/riverplate.com#stat_trafic I don't want to use embedded or iframed third party services. I know google has public API and you can connect it to google graph API to to show pretty graphs. There is a tutorial by google here on how to do it: https://developers.google.com/analytics/resources/articles/gdataAnalyticsCharts Few problems: I don't know much javascript The javascript seems to prompt for authntication as opposed to login automatically. (from my understanding by reading comments on the code) Does anyone know of any ready made script that does what I am looking for or know how I can fix this code that will allow me to display analytic info without authenticating?   I'm looking for a social media guide that would talk me through all the different steps involved with setting up social media for a new website (e.g. how to create accounts on the main social media like Facebook and Twitter, how to get new fans/followers, highlight the things one should avoid doing...) The guide should primarily cover the startup phase of a website, and ideally be in PDF or other printer-friendly formats. • How can we stop GitHub from emailing too many people too much? [migrated]

  I recently joined a research team that uses R and Git/GitHub. The team includes 4 full-time R programmers and 10 social scientists who only run simple analyses. I was told by one of the more experienced programmers on the project that they haven't found a way to use many of GitHub's tools for collaboration (bug reports, to-do lists, code comments, etc.) because they generate emails to everyone who is a contributor to the repo every time. This is incredibly puzzling to me, so I'd love to hear from someone that there are ways to adjust the email settings. I'd expect there would be multiple ways, so that individuals could opt-in or opt-out of certain emails, and also so contributors could explicitly choose whether certain people get certain emails or not. Is it possible to adjust these settings?

• Do most programmers copy and paste code?

  I learned very early on that cutting & pasting somebody else's code takes longer in the long run that writing it yourself. In my opinion unless you really understand it, cut & paste code will probably have issues which will be a nightmare to resolve. Don't get me wrong, I mean finding other peoples code and learning from it is essential, but we don't just paste it into our app. We rewrite the concepts into our app. But I'm constantly hearing about people who cut & paste, and they talk about it like it's common practice. I also see comments by others which indicate it's common practice. So, do most programmers cut & paste code?

• Google keeps indexing /comment/reply URL

  With the new update of Google algorithm called Penguin, I think my site was being penalized due to webspam. But of course I don't create post which seems to be spam to Google. It is just I think how Google index my site. I found out that Google index the URL of my site like: http://www.example.com/comment/reply/3866/26556 So there are so many comment/reply URL index by Google. I have already added: Disallow: /comment/reply/ Disallow: /?q=comment/reply/ but still Google still index this URL. Any idea how to prevent Google from indexing comments?

• Installation taking a very long time

  I am installing Ubuntu 14.04(32-bit) on my laptop (Compaq Presario V2000), and after about 7 hours, it is still in Congiguring bcmwl-kernel-source (i386) mode. The messages I read are as follows: ubuntu kernel: [22814.858163] ACPI: \_SB_.PCI0.LPC0.LPC0.ACAD: ACPI_NOTIFY_BUS_CHECK event: unsupported with the numbers in the square brackets increasing. I have had Windows XP professional on this laptop, and I am erasing it. I am not sure if I should turn off the laptop, and start all over again. About 4 years ago I installed Ubuntu on this laptop, and that was very fast. The only problem I encountered was my wireless, and could not make it to work, and switched back to Windows. I appreciate any comments regarding this installation taking such a long time.

• OmniGraffle for iPad Now Supports VGA Output

  I have (surprisingly) gotten a lot of comments over the last post about using OmniGraffle as an interactive EA tool.  The news flash/update is that it now supports VGA output.  I had sent a note to the developers and they responded that this was a highly sought after feature…well, they delivered. I have tried it informally and it works, thought there is a little lag between the drawing on the screen and the output, but it is not terrible. • Architecture of interaction modes ("paint tools") for a 3D paint program

  We are developing a Qt-based application to navigate through and paint on a volume treated as a 3D pixel graphic. The layout of the app consists of three orthogonal slice views on which the user may paint stuff like dots, circles etc. and also erase already painted pixels. Think of a 3D Gimp or MS Paint. How would you design the the architecture for the different interaction modes (i.e. paint tools)? My idea is: use the MVC pattern have a separate controler for every interaction mode install an event filter on all three slice views to collect all incoming user interaction events (mouse, keyboard) redirect the events to the currently active interaction controler I would appreciate critical comments on that idea.

• Unity Gwibber lens doesn't work 12.10

  Is there something Specific I am needing to do to get the unity Gwibber/Social lens to work. I have gone into system settings and added google account, twitter account and facebook account. When I go to the lens however nothing is displayed at all its blank. I search any term including my name and it states nothing to display. So it remains blank. If I start gwibber itself it has found and does see my accounts new messages and posts. Any hints on what to try?

• What is the best policy for allowing clients to change email?

  We are developing a web application with a fairly standard registration process which requires a client/user to verify their email address before they are allowed to use the site. The site also allows users to change their email address after verification (with a re-type email field, as well). What are the pros and cons of having the user re-verify their email. Is this even needed? • Is there an open source license for this?

  I have written code at home, on my own time and using my own knowledge and equipment, while under no contract or NDA. I want to make this code open source so that I can use it in software I write for an employer, without denying myself the right to use it at home or elsewhere later. I'm not sure if saying it is in the "public domain" would fit this purpose, or if I need to find an open source license. I want anyone to be able to use the code in closed source proprietary software with zero requirements for including a license with the source or binary. And I want to minimize the risk of anyone being sued for using it. (I'm aware that one can never be 100% safe from being sued.) Is there an open source license that fits this purpose? To what extent is what I want to do even possible? I wouldn't mind putting the license in comments in the code files themselves, but that obviously doesn't go with the binary.

• How important is it for a programmer to have an online presence?

  I've noticed more and more mentions (both in posts here and in actual job descriptions) of programmers's "portfolios" - typically their public profiles on sites such as this, github, etc. How important is this, and would companies (startups in particular) reject (or immediately discard withouth even interviewing) otherwise outstanding candidates who don't have an online presence? Personally, I prefer to keep a very low profile online. My name here cannot identify me, and I have other handles for other sites. I have a very spartan (and completely private) Facebook page. I do code on my own but the code lives in local repositories. In general, the less information online about me, the better. I could see a designer needing some sort of online portfolio, but for a programmer, is this really a big negative when job-searching?

  I think that there are some cases when multiple assertions are needed (e.g. Guard Assertion), but in general I try to avoid this. What is your opinion? Please provide a real word examples when multiple asserts are really needed. Thanks! Edit In the comment to this great post Roy Osherove pointed to the OAPT project that is designed to run each assert in a single test. This is written on projects home page: Proper unit tests should fail for exactly one reason, that’s why you should be using one assert per unit test. And also Roy wrote in comments: My guideline is usually that you test one logical CONCEPT per test. you can have multiple asserts on the same object. they will usually be the same concept being tested.

  We recently added OAuth to MentionNotifier so that users can quickly view and edit their subscriptions without needed an additional login.  This is enabled by default for new users, but existing users will need to do the following steps to associate their subscriptions with OAuth: 1)  Go to http://software.engraph.com/ManageMentionNotifier 2)  Click “Sign in with Twitter” 3)  Verify that your twittername and email are correct 4)  Click "Associate with OAuth" This will also allow you to reply to notification emails and MentionNotifier will tweet on your behalf.  This is made possible by @sidePop written by @ferventcoder Note that the reply by email is new and buggy, so make sure that what was tweeted is correct and as expected.
