  Hi Guys, For one of my course project I started implementing "Naive Bayesian classifier" in C. My project is to implement a document classifier application (especially Spam) using huge training data. Now I have problem implementing the algorithm because of the limitations in the C's datatype. ( Algorithm I am using is given here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayesian_spam_filtering ) PROBLEM STATEMENT: The algorithm involves taking each word in a document and calculating probability of it being spam word. If p1, p2 p3 .... pn are probabilities of word-1, 2, 3 ... n. The probability of doc being spam or not is calculated using Here, probability value can be very easily around 0.01. So even if I use datatype "double" my calculation will go for a toss. This is the first time I am hitting such issue. So how exactly should this problem be tackled?

• Parsing command line options in Perl

  Hi guys, I am parsing command line options in Perl using Getopt::Long. I am forced to use prefix - (one dash) for short commands (-s) and -- (double dash) for long commands (ex. --input=file), but problem is, that there is one special option (-r=) so it is long option for its requirement for argument, but it has to have one dash (-) prefix not double dash (--) like other long options. Is possible to setup Getopt::Long to accept these?

• Process.Start() and ShellExecute() fails with URLs on Windows 8

  Since I installed Windows 8 I've noticed that a number of my applications appear to have problems opening URLs. That is when I click on a link inside of a Windows application, either nothing happens or there's an error that occurs. It's happening both to my own applications and a host of Windows applications I'm running. At first I thought this was an issue with my default browser (Chrome) but after switching the default browser to a few others and experimenting a bit I noticed that the errors occur - oddly enough - only when I run an application as an Administrator. I also tried switching to FireFox and Opera as my default browser and saw exactly the same behavior. The scenario for this is a bit bizarre: Running on Windows 8 Call Process.Start() (or ShellExecute() in Win32 API) with a URL or an HTML file Run 'As Administrator' (works fine under non-elevated user account!) or with UAC off A browser other than Internet Explorer is set as your Default Web Browser Talk about a weird scenario: Something that doesn't work when you run as an Administrator which is supposed to have rights to everything on the system! Instead running under an Admin account - either elevated with a User Account Control prompt or even when running as a full Administrator fails. It appears that this problem does not occur for everyone, but when I looked for a solution to this, I saw quite a few posts in relation to this with no clear resolutions. I have three Windows 8 machines running here in the office and all three of them showed this behavior. Lest you think this is just a programmer's problem - this can affect any software running on your system that needs to run under administrative rights. Try it out Now, in order for this next example to fail, any browser but Internet Explorer has to be your default browser and even then it may not fail depending on how you installed your browser. To see if this is a problem create a small Console application and call Process.Start() with a URL in it:namespace Win8ShellBugConsole { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine("Launching Url..."); Process.Start("http://microsoft.com"); Console.Write("Press any key to continue..."); Console.ReadKey(); Console.WriteLine("\r\n\r\nLaunching image..."); Process.Start(Path.GetFullPath(@"..\..\sailbig.jpg")); Console.Write("Press any key to continue..."); Console.ReadKey(); } } } Compile this code. Then execute the code from Explorer (not from Visual Studio because that may change the permissions). If you simply run the EXE and you're not running as an administrator, you'll see the Web page pop up in the browser as well as the image loading. Now run the same thing with Run As Administrator: Now when you run it you get a nice error when Process.Start() is fired: The same happens if you are running with User Account Control off altogether - ie. you are running as a full admin account. Now if you comment out the URL in the code above and just fire the image display - that works just fine in any user mode. As does opening any other local file type or even starting a new EXE locally (ie. Process.Start("c:\windows\notepad.exe"). All that works, EXCEPT for URLs. The code above uses Process.Start() in .NET but the same happens in Win32 Applications that use the ShellExecute API. In some of my older Fox apps ShellExecute returns an error code of 31 - which is No Shell Association found. What's the Deal? It turns out the problem has to do with the way browsers are registering themselves on Windows. Internet Explorer - being a built-in application in Windows 8 - apparently does this correctly, but other browsers possibly don't or at least didn't at the time I installed them. So even Chrome, which continually updates itself, has a recent version that apparently has this registration issue fixed, I was unable to simply set IE as my default browser then use Chrome to 'Set as Default Browser'. It still didn't work. Neither did using the Set Program Associations dialog which lets you assign what extensions are mapped to by a given application. Each application provides a set of extension/moniker mappings that it supports and this dialog lets you associate them on a system wide basis. This also did not work for Chrome or any of the other browsers at first. However, after repeated retries here eventually I did manage to get FireFox to work, but not any of the others. What Works? Reinstall the Browser In the end I decided on the hard core pull the plug solution: Totally uninstall and re-install Chrome in this case. And lo and behold, after reinstall everything was working fine. Now even removing the association for Chrome, switching to IE as the default browser and then back to Chrome works. But, even though the version of Chrome I was running before uninstalling and reinstalling is the same as I'm running now after the reinstall now it works. Of course I had to find out the hard way, before Richard commented with a note regarding what the issue is with Chrome at least: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=156400 As expected the issue is a registration issue - with keys not being registered at the machine level. Reading this I'm still not sure why this should be a problem - an elevated account still runs under the same user account (ie. I'm still rickstrahl even if I Run As Administrator), so why shouldn't an app be able to read my Current User registry hive? And also that doesn't quite explain why if I register the extensions using Run As Administrator in Chrome when using Set as Default Browser). But in the end it works… Not so fast It's now a couple of days later and still there are some oddball problems although this time they appear to be purely Chrome issues. After the reinstall Chrome seems to pop up properly with ShellExecute() calls both in regular user and Admin mode. However, it now looks like Chrome is actually running two completely separate user profiles for each. For example, when I run Visual Studio in Admin mode and go to View in browser, Chrome complains that it was installed in Admin mode and can't launch (WTF?). Then you retry a few times later and it ends up working. When launched that way some of the plug-ins installed don't show up with the effect that sometimes they're visible sometimes they're not. Also Chrome seems to loose my configuration and Google sign in between sessions now, presumably when switching user modes. Add-ins installed in admin mode don't show up in user mode and vice versa. Ah, this is lovely. Did I mention that I freaking hate UAC precisely because of this kind of bullshit. You can never tell exactly what account your app is running under, and apparently apps also have a hard time trying to put data into the right place that works for both scenarios. And as my recent post on using Windows Live accounts shows it's yet another level of abstraction ontop of the underlying system identity that can cause all sort of small side effect headaches like this. Hopefully, most of you are skirting this issue altogether - having installed more recent versions of your favorite browsers. • Zero downtime deployment (Tomcat), Nginx or HAProxy, behind hardware LB - how to "starve" old server?

  Currently we have the following setup. Hardware Load Balancer (LB) Box A running Tomcat on 8080 (TA) Box B running Tomcat on 8080 (TB) TA and TB are running behind LB. For now it's pretty complicated and manual job to take Box A or Box B out of LB to do the zero downtime deployment. I am thinking to do something like this: Hardware Load Balancer (LB) Box A running Nginx on 8080 (NA) Box A running Tomcat on 8081 (TA1) Box A running Tomcat on 8082 (TA2) Box B running Nginx on 8080 (NB) Box B running Tomcat on 8081 (TB1) Box B running Tomcat on 8082 (TB2) Basically LB will be directing traffic between NA and NB now. On each of Nginx's we'll have TA1, TA2 and TB1, TB2 configured as upstream servers. Once one of the upstreams's healthcheck page is unresponsive (shutdown) the traffic goes to another one (HttpHealthcheckModule module on Nginx). So the deploy process is simple. Say, TA1 is active with version 0.1 of the app. Healthcheck on TA1 is OK. We start TA2 with Healthcheck on it as ERROR. So Nginx is not talking to it. We deploy app version 0.2 to TA2. Make sure it works. Now, we switch the Healthcheck on TA2 to OK, switch Healthcheck to TA1 to ERROR. Nginx will start serving TA2, and will remove TA1 out of rotation. Done! And now same with the other box. While it sounds all cool and nice, how do we "starve" the Nginx? Say we have pending connections, some users on TA1. If we just turn it off, sessions will break (we have cookie-based sessions). Not good. Any way to starve traffic to one of the upstream servers with Nginx? Thanks!

• need assistance with my.cnf - 1500% CPU usage

  I'm running into a few issues with our new database server. It is a HP G8 with 2 INTEL XEON E5-2650 processors and 32GB of ram. This server is dedicated as a MySQL server (5.1.69) for our intranet portal. I have been having issues with this server staying alive - I notice high CPU usage during certain times of day (8% ~ 1500%+) and see very low memory usage (7 ~ 15%) based on using the 'top' command. When the CPU usage passes 1000%, that is when the app usually dies. I'm trying to see what I'm doing wrong with the config file, hopefully one of the experts can chime in and let me know what they think. • Multiple calls to different page methods in same web page are not running in parallel (JQuery/Ajax/A

  I have several page methods defined in the code behind of an aspx page. I have several JS calls (see example below), one after the other, in the ready() method of JQuery to call these page methods. I noticed the javascript calls run asynchronously but the .NET page methods do not run in parallel. Page method 1 finishes first before page method 2 runs. Is there a way to get all the page methods to run all at the same time?   I am trying to change IP address of a SuSE 10 machine that is running Tomcat. I need to create a shell script to do this so could not use YaST. As some sites suggested on my Google search, I edited the files in /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-* to change the IP address. After that, I restarted the network service by calling /etc/init.d/network restart. The network card restarting just fine. I, then, restarted tomcat web service. However, when I browsed the new IP address using browser, I got an "Request denied" message. Can anyone please tell me how I could do this? Thanks

  I need to read the location of the Temporary ASP.NET Files folder from VBScript as part of a post-installation task in an installer created using a Visual Studio 2008 deployment project. I thought I would do something like this: Set oShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") strPath = oShell.RegRead("HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ASP.NET\2.0.50727.0\Path") and then concatenate strPath with "\Temporary ASP.NET Files" and be done with it. On an x64 system, however, I am getting the value from the WOW6432Node (HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\ASP.NET\2.0.50727.0), which gives me the 32-bit framework path (C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727), but on an x64 system, I actually want the 64-bit path, i.e. C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727. I understand that this happens because the .vbs file is run using the 32-bit script host due to the parent process (the installer) being 32-bit itself. How can I run the script using the 64-bit script host - or - how can I read the 64-bit values even if the script is run using the 32-bit script host?

• Blackberry stopwatch implementation

  I'm trying to write a blackberry app that is basically a stopwatch, and displays lap times. First, I'm not sure I'm implementing the stopwatch functionality in the most optimal way. I have a LabelField (_myLabel) that displays the 'clock' - starting at 00:00. Then you hit the start button and every second the _myLabel field gets updated with how many seconds have past since the last update (should only ever increment by 1, but sometimes there is a delay and it will skip a number). I just can't think of a different way to do it - and I am new to GUI development and threads so I guess that's why. EDIT: Here is what calls the stopwatch: _timer = new Timer(); _timer.schedule(new MyTimerTask(), 250, 250); And here is the TimerTask: class MyTimerTask extends TimerTask { long currentTime; long startTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); public void run() { synchronized (Application.getEventLock()) { currentTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); long diff = currentTime - startTime; long min = diff / 60000; long sec = (diff % 60000) / 1000; String minStr = new Long(min).toString(); String secStr = new Long(sec).toString(); if (min < 10) minStr = "0" + minStr; if (sec < 10) secStr = "0" + secStr; _myLabel.setText(minStr + ":" + secStr); timerDisplay.deleteAll(); timerDisplay.add(_timerLabel); } } } Anyway when you stop the stopwatch it updates a historical table of lap time data. When this list gets long, the timer starts to degrade. If you try to scroll, then it gets really bad. Is there a better way to implement my stopwatch?

• How to specify Java Option (System Property) for embedded Tomcat while running Grails App?

  Specifically, I want to have my grails app under development to connect to an Oracle db defiined by an tnsnames.ora file. I have the tnsnames.ora file located in c:\drivers\Network\ on my PC. When I run the grails app via "grails run-war", the db connection string defined in the tnsnames.ora file doesn't seem to be picked up: grails prod run-war -Dserver.port=62215 -Doracle.net.tns_admin=C:\drivers\Netowrk\ It seems the name-value pair of oracle.net.tns_admin is not being passed to the JVM used by the the embedded Tomcat that comes with Grails 1.2.0. If not, what is the proper way of specify it, or pass any JAVA_OPTS to the underlying JVM?

• How do I free SQLServerCE's COM instance from the current running process?

  It's been a while since I touched COM so be nice ;) This is under WindowsCE 5.0 with SQLServerCE 2.0. After calling this to load SQLServerCE 2.0 : - IDBInitialize *pIDBInitialize = NULL; CoCreateInstance(CLSID_SQLSERVERCE_2_0, NULL, CLSCTX_INPROC_SERVER, IID_IDBInitialize, (void**)&pIDBInitialize); Module load occurs for SSCE20.dll which obviously loads the SQLServerCE engine into the process space. What I don't understand is if I do this immediately after :- pIDBInitialize->Release(); I don't see a dll module unload, so that SSCE20.dll (and friends) are still loaded into my process. Now I tried CoFreeUnusedLibraries() which I figure forces COM to purge any unused libraries, but it doesn't seem to do the trick. At runtime I want to be able to completely unload the SQLServerCE 2.0 dll from the process to streamline an upgrade to 3.5SP1. I suspect this has something to do with the shared dll model that Microsoft use under WindowsCE... but, I might be wrong :) Thanks in advance, David.

• Why am I losing sessions when running in StateServer mode?

  I have checked the servers (Win Server 2003) application event logs for the following problem http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308097 which doesn't show up. It just appears that sessions drop randomly for random users It's a single server setup, no web farms and no load balancing Even though the issue I point to above doesn't occur in the logs, is it worth increasing the stateNetworkTimeout attribute anyway? The configuration at the moment is simply <sessionState mode="StateServer" cookieless="false" stateConnectionString="tcpip=localhost:42424" timeout="60"/>

  I have a silverlight app. When I develop I have it pick up its data from a local URL: http://localhost/theapp/data/... however, when it is online, I want it to pick up its data from an online URL: http://www.tanguay.info/... Currently I have a variable which I switch before I compile and upload: bool silverlightAppIsLive = true; which I use to determine whether or not to get data from the first or second URL above. Is there a way for me to determine this automatically in code without setting the variable manually?

I tried putting this code into my add-in but it returns the add-in's stack trace, not the process I am debugging. • Where to put external archives to configure running in Eclipse?

  As a Java/Eclipse noob coming from a Visual Studio .NET background, I'm trying to understand how to set up my run/debug environment in the Eclipse IDE so I can start stepping through code. I have built my application with separate src and bin hierarchies for each library project, and each project has its own jar. For example, in a Windows environment, I have something like: c:\myapp\myapp_main\src\com\mycorp\myapp\main ...and a parallel "bin" tree like this: c:\myapp\myapp_main\bin\com\mycorp\myapp\main Other supporting projects are, similarly: **c:\myapp\myapp_util\src\com\mycorp\myapp\uti**l (and a parallel "bin" tree.) ... etc. So, I end up with, e.g., myapp_util.jar in the ...\myapp_util\bin... path and then add that as an external archive to my myapp_main project. I also use utilities like gluegen-rt.jar, which I add ad external dependencies to the projects requiring them. I have been able to run outside of the Eclipse environment, by copying all my project jars, gluegen-rt DLL, etc., into a "lib" subfolder of some directory and executing something like: java -Djava.library.path=lib -DfullScreen=false -cp lib/gluegen-rt.jar;lib/myapp_main.jar;lib/myapp_util.jar; com.mycorp.myapp.Main When I first pressed F11 to debug, however, I got a message about something like /com/sun/../glugen... not being found by the class loader. So, to debug, or even just run, in Ecplipse, I tried setting up my VM arguments in the Galileo Debug - (Run/Debug) Configurations to be the command line above, beginning at "-Djava.libary.path...". I've put a lib subdirectory - just like the above with all jars and the native gluegen DLL - in various places, such as beneath the folder that my main jar is built in and as a subfolder of my Ecplipse starting workspace folder, but now Eclipse can't find the main class: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com.mycorp.myapp.Main Although the Classpath says that it is using the "default classpath", whatever that is. Bottom line, how do I assemble the constituent files of a multi-project application so that I can run or debug in Ecplipse?

• Why are error pages ignored in RESTEasy web service running on Tomcat?

  I'm developing a REST-ful web service using RESTEasy deployed on Tomcat. I've configured an error page which takes the exception's message and generates an XML based on it when any exception occurs during the request. This works fine for any application generated exceptions. However, if client sends an invalid XML which cannot be unmarshalled correctly, an javax.xml.bind.UnmarshalException is thrown and Tomcat's default error page is used instead of mine. I have configured my error page to the error-code 500 in web.xml. Is using error pages the correct way to handle errors when using RESTEasy or is there an alternative way?
