• hadoop - large database query

  Situation: I have a Postgres DB that contains a table with several million rows and I'm trying to query all of those rows for a MapReduce job. From the research I've done on DBInputFormat, Hadoop might try and use the same query again for a new mapper and since these queries take a considerable amount of time I'd like to prevent this in one of two ways that I've thought up: 1) Limit the job to only run 1 mapper that queries the whole table and call it good. or 2) Somehow incorporate an offset in the query so that if Hadoop does try to use a new mapper it won't grab the same stuff. I feel like option (1) seems more promising, but I don't know if such a configuration is possible. Option(2) sounds nice in theory but I have no idea how I would keep track of the mappers being made and if it is at all possible to detect that and reconfigure. Help is appreciated and I'm namely looking for a way to pull all of the DB table data and not have several of the same query running because that would be a waste of time.

  I'm used to work with properties files, for example from Ant. Where I can simply reference the property file doing something like that: <property file="webapp_DO_NOT_COMMIT.properties"/> (the file is so named because our DVCS is configured as to never commit files containing "DO_NOT_COMMIT" to prevent committing credentials/passwords/etc.) Here's a very simple .properties file example: passwd=brokencleartextpassword Now I want to put some configuration in another, similar, properties file that I need to access from my Java code. How should I go about it? I also have another related question: is the character encoding of .properties file defined by any spec?

  I have used this snippet to prevent webkit from changing antialiasing when using CSS transforms: html{ -webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; } This works fine for most cases, however I noticed some weirdness in chrome when playing around with Bootstrap using this HTML: <button class="btn btn-inverse">John Doe</button> <a class="btn btn-inverse">John Doe</a>?   I am using Bash script to read line by line from a text file, which has special characters in it (regular expression). When I use echo "${SOME_VAR}" it does not display the text as is. I am familiar with Prevent * to be expanded in the bash script. How can I display and use the text as is? • AS3: Performance question calling an event function with null param

  Lately I needed to call a listener function without an actual listener like so: foo(null); private function foo(event:Event):void { //do something } So I was wondering if there is a significant difference regarding performance between this and using the following, in which I can prevent the null in calling the function without the listener, but am still able to call it with a listener as well: foo(); private function foo(event:Event = null):void { } I am not sure wether it is just a question of style, or actually bad practice and I should write two similar functions, one with and one without the event param (which seems cumbersome to me).   I want to create an iphone application which consists of two parts: The app itself and a server side component. On a users request, the app sends data to the server which is to be handled by human operators. To prevent abuse from an iphone app user, the id of the iphone is sent along with the request, and the operators can blacklist pranksters to deny their iphone access to the service. So far so good. Now the problem is: Someone could easily discover the address of the serverside component, and write a script to send bogus requests, using multiple IP addresses etc. So my question is: how can I defend myself against this? Captchas to protect against scripted attacks or requiring the user to register himself are not an option for this particular application. If I had control of the download, I would associate a unique ID with each downloaded app, but obviously this is not an option with the appstore. What would be your approach to make the server side part more secure?

I found that some patterns cause handler to fall into loop. for example searching \b\b in a text, never will terminate. and number of these expressions is infinite (\b\b\b,\b\b\b\b and so on). I'd like to determine and control all invalid expressions. Is there an algorithm to distinguish valid and invalid expressions? If not, how can I prevent my program from falling into an infinite loop?

  I have an elements on page that are draggabe with jQuery. These elements have click event wich navigates to another page (ordinary links for example). What is the best way to prevent click from firing on dropping such element, while allowing clicking it in not drag and drop state? I have this problem with sortable elements, but think it is good to have solution for general drag and drop. I've solved the problem for myself. After that found that same solution exists for Scriptaculous, but maybe someone have a better way to achieve that.

  So, I have a form, to make it a little more secure and potentially help prevent CSRF attacks I want to add a random token value in a hidden field that value is also stored server side in my session data. When should I issue a new token? Per form? Per page load where there is any form? Per session? I can render it invalid as soon as a form is successfully submitted but I'm wondering when to generate one. I ask as if I issue it per form or per page do I not risk the chance of a duplicate token value overwriting the existing (valid) token if a user opens a separate window but submitting the first form (with the now overwritten value)?

But this does not prevent the hiding of the WPF window when "Windows + D" is pressed. There must be another way do to this. The new desktop gadgets in Windows 7 are not hidden when "Windows + D" is pressed. How did the MS developers achieve this?

  Hello everybody, I am working with Symfony 1.4 and Doctrine. I have a model A with a email field. The form of A, display an input in which the user should insert the email correctly. But as everybody know sometiemes they don't do it. To fix this i have insert an extra field in the model (and in the form), called *repeat_email* to prevent the misspellings. Then, in the validation process, after validates all the fields, i use a global validator to compare the data of the two fields. This works, but i don't want to have the email stored two times in the database (i don't want the *repeat_email*). Is there any mechanism to use it in the validation process, but not to store it in the database? Thanks,

• Can an Oracle user get a list of its own running sessions without access to v$session?

  I have an application that runs a process and I only want one process to run at a time. Some options are: Use an object lock to prevent subsequent processes running. This would be fine, but I want the calling session to return immediately and not wait for the running session to complete. Use a custom Y/N to set whether a process is running or not. I set a "Y" flag at the start of the process and set it to "N" when it finishes or fails. Also fine but feels like I'm re-inventing the wheel and doesn't feel like the way to go. It also falls short if the running session is killed as the flag stays at "Y". Use dbms_application_info.set_module This approach seems the most robust, but if I'm to know there's an existing running process I think I need to be able to query v$session and I don't want this application to have such wide access. Any ideas?

  I've been trying to get UISearchBarDisplayController to not animate, and stay fixed below the navigation bar. Is this even possible, I've been getting some weird results. This is all configured through a storyboard. I am just trying to figure out If I should just create my own implementation of UISearchBarDisplayController since it kinda seems a little impossible to customize it to my need. • Can I modify an ASP.NET AJAX History Point?

  I'm using ASP.NET 3.5 with AJAX and have enabled history on the Script Manager. I have 2 pages, Default.aspx and Default2.aspx. I'm using the AJAX History on the Default.aspx page and saving history points on the server-side. There are some dropdowns on Default.aspx that I don't want to save a history point for each change but would like to save the latest state so that when I click on a link on Default.aspx that navigates to Default2.aspx, when I click the back button on Default2.aspx to return I want the dropdowns to reflect what they were prior to clicking on the hyperlink. So what I'd like to do is modify the history point that I originally set on one of my ajax async postbacks on the client-side before the page navigates away to Default2.aspx. There is a location.hash javascript property that looks like it may do what I want but when I modify the value the Script Manager Navigate event is firing. Is there a way to prevent this event from firing? And would this then do the job?

(My thought is BaseHTTPServer automatically closes connection when the last part in "do_GET()" is computed, but I prevent this by restarting the script.) If I'm right, how do I close the connection? If not, what else might be the problem? Edit: The server script HAS to restart the entire program.

  I have an application that has a Service uses a ArrayList to store in the background for a very long time, the variable is initialized when the service started. The service is in the background and there will be frequent access to the variable (that's why i don't want to use file management or settings since it will be very expensive for a file I/O for the sake of battery life). The variable will likely to be ~1MB-2MB over its life tie. Is it safe to say that it will never be nulled by GC or the system or is there any way to prevent it? Thanks.

I setup the emails like [email protected] - and using the Google Email client and loggin as user contact - if I send emails to users - they arrive in their inbox. But when I send it through my php script running on my hosting account where I have registered the domain example.com - using the same email address [email protected] - it ends up in the Spam folder - I've noticed this in both yahoo and gmail accounts Any tips on how to prevent this from happening. With a certain script I can get Youtube Feeds as an image, take a look at the example: JsFiddle I'm trying to do a Jquery click event which will have to invoke another script called 'embedly' like this: $("a").click(function(event) { event.preventDefault(); $(this).embedly({ chars: 220, nostyle: true, key:':41f042ec20b04dda84448dc4a46d357d' }); }); It doesn't seem to work. When I do this from my desktop the click does not invoke the embedly part and also goes to the url regardless of the prevent default.

• Is pthread_spin_trylock safe inside of sigsegv handler of multithreaded application?

  I am trying to implement a handler that on SIGSEGV will collect some information such as process-id, thread-id and a backtrace and write this information to a file/pipe/socket. The problem lies in that there is the (probably pretty high) possibility that if one thread experienced a SIGSEGV that the others will shortly follow. If two threads happen to make it to the bit of code where they're writing their report out at the same time then they'll interleave their writing (to the same file). I know that I should only be using async-signal-safe functions as detailed in signal(7) I also have seen at least two cases here and video linked in top answer here where others have used pthread_spin_trylock to get around this problem. Is this a safe way to prevent the above problem?
