• Per-application volume control in windows XP?

  Is there a way either built-in (don't think there is) or via a third-party to specify the volume on a per application basis in Windows XP? For example, right now I am listening to some music on fairly loudly and I would like all of the alerts I am getting from other apps (email, twitter updates, IMs) to be reduced.

• Mathematica - Import CSV and process columns?

  I have a CSV file that is formatted like: 0.0023709,8.5752e-007,4.847e-008 and I would like to import it into Mathematica and then have each column separated into a list so I can do some math on the selected column. I know I can import the data with: Import["data.csv"] then I can separate the columns with this: StringSplit[data[[1, 1]], ","] which gives: {"0.0023709", "8.5752e-007", "4.847e-008"} The problem now is that I don't know how to get the data into individual lists and also Mathematica does not accept scientific notation in the form 8.5e-007. Any help in how to break the data into columns and format the scientific notation would be great. Thanks in advance.

  I am creating a simple Proxy server for my website. Why I am not using mod_proxy and mod_cache is a different discussion. • How to tell which process is hogging my CPU when they don't add up to 100%?

  Ubuntu's System Monitor applet shows 100% CPU usage continuously. If I click it, the resources tab shows it at 100% continuously, too. If I go to processes, though, to find out which process is the culprit, there is nothing above 10%. If I run top there is nothing above 10%. The individual processes do not add up to 100%. I try killing lots of processes, but the overall usage continues to be 100%. How can I find out what's hogging the CPU? This is an unusual situation on a computer I use daily, which is never anywhere near 100% CPU unless I'm doing something that requires it (like loading 32 Firefox tabs), after which it goes back to a normal idle level. It's not a new install or anything. There is no reason the processor should be maxed out. I'm not sure when it started or if I changed something that caused it to happen. Normally I would use top or System Monitor and find the process that had gone out of control, but I can't find anything with those tools this time. It persists after reboots and everything. And the processor is obviously hot, so it's not an erroneous reading. Update: I tried killing every process, one at a time, until the problem went away, and killing vino-server finally fixed it, even though that process never went above 5%. I had enabled Remote Desktop a few days ago (and have obviously now disabled it). But the question remains: How did a single process manage to use 100% CPU while top only showed that process at 5%? How do I identify culprits like this in the future? Looks like I'm not the only one who's had this problem: Still a problem in both jaunty & karmic. Interestingly, both System Monitor & htop do not show the sum of individual processes being anywhere near 100% cpu.

• Using WCF to expose underlying process

  I think I must be a little dull because I'm having so much difficulty with this. I use WCF for pretty much everything in-house, it's the most appropriate technology. I have a new Silverlight 3 app that is connecting to the WCF service and that's working fine. Where the problem begins is: Because of the expense in creating the objects within this service and the high correlation of individual objects being shared between clients I want to have a console application that basically gathers/calculates/caches all the data for the service 24/7 and the service basically connects to the console app (or whatever it is) and gets the pre-processed data. eg, think of it in terms of a stock reporting app (which it is). Person A has a portfolio of x, y z Person B has a portfolio of x, q, z, r The service needs to provide updated metrics on how their portfolio is performing. So instead of every 1 second processing person A, then person B, the app independently gathers the stock price and persons position information into memory and the service just queries the in memory result.   Right from Jeff's blog: Software Engineering: Dead? I was utterly floored when I read this new IEEE article by Tom DeMarco (pdf). See if you can tell why. He quotes DeMarco, "I'm gradually coming to the conclusion that software engineering is an idea whose time has come and gone". Further, "What DeMarco seems to be saying -- and, at least, what I am definitely saying -- is that control is ultimately illusory on software development projects." I am writing these lines without context to invoke reading of the related subject. What are the views of the programming community here? I have started to realize that a community wiki is not getting the right amount of participation here. That is the reason I left this question out in the open, while still contemplating a change to CW. It was closed once, and I thought that was the end of it. But, now I see it was reopened and has more answers (all of which I have not yet read). However, I see a lot of CW requests and am forced to reconsider that. This is how I intend to make the CW decision here. There is a comment by Neil Butterworth requesting a CW at 12 upvotes -- "should be community wiki" There is a comment by Lance Roberts requesting no CW at 0 upvotes -- "+1 for not putting it in community wiki" The difference is 12 for a CW request at the moment If this difference becomes 5 more (that is 17), I'll move this question to CW, and it will not return back from there Of course, there is also a close vote at the moment; the question may be closed again.

• Paste textbox from Powerpoint to Word as an editable control

  I have a Powerpoint 2007 file that contains a number of textboxes and shapes with text on them. I can edit, resize, change the text, etc. in these boxes in Powerpoint. However, if I select an item, copy it, and paste it into a Word 2007 document, I can't edit it. I can resize the entire thing, but it acts more like an image than a text box. I've tried the paste special options and keep source formatting options, but still can't edit it. Is there a way to be able to paste the editable content from Powerpoint and still have it editable in Word? Update I found this question that appears to get to the root of the problem: The MS Office Art graphics engine (aka Escher 2) is new to MS Office 2007 and while fully implemented in Excel and Powerpoint is only partially implemented in Word 2007 for backwards compatibility with the MS Office Drawing/Graphics engine (aka Escher) still available in Word It should work in earlier versions of Word and Word 2010, but not Word 2007. This is quite frustrating as I have to edit the slide in Powerpoint before copying it into Word. While doable, it adds another step, but the problem is that everyone who wants to update the Word document will have to do the same thing, adding complexity and steps for everyone. If I embed the Powerpoint slide in the document, I can edit the controls, but they don't scale the same way and takes a lot of work.

  How can I, from within a java program on windows, prevent a debugger window being displayed if a program I invoke crashes, and how can I detect the fact that it has crashed? Background I have a problem with a java application running on Windows which is launching an unreliable third party program by way of ProcessBuilder.start(). Specifically, if the external program crashes, the 'Visual Studio Just-In-time Debugger' window pops up asking if the user wants to debug the program. From the java application side, I'm happy to deal with the fact that under some circumstances, the third party program will crash, but I'd like to be able to detect and silently handle that situation from within the Java code without requiring any user interaction.

• asp:Menu Not working on webhost

  I'm using Visual Studio Web Express 2008 to develop an ASP.Net website. I have a master page that every page inherits from and on that master page I have the asp:menu control. On my local machine the menu control works just fine. The javascript is emitted and the links work as well. However, when I upload it to my webhost service provider, the javascript is not emitted and my links do not work. I'm getting a feeling that my service provider really doesn't know much about .Net as they suggested that I make sure that I upload the .js files which isn't necessary. Does anyone have any suggestions that I can give them? They're asking me what requirements are needed. It seems to me that something is not setup on their server properly but according to them, they have .Net 3.5 SP1 installed.

I would also like to wait for the mongodb launchd plist to run first. I installed mongobb using homebrew and it came with a launchd.plist already. • C# visually subclass datagridview control VS2005

  Maybe its something stupid, but I'm having a problem with a subclass of a DataGridView Control in VS2005 C#. I know I can subclass from almost anything by doing public class MyDataGridView : DataGridView {} no problem, and I put in some things / elements I want applicable globally. Now, I take this gridview and put into a custom user control that will contain other controls too. So I have something like created by the visual designer. I grab some buttons, label, and my derived "MyDataGridView" on it. public partial class MyCompoundDGVPlus : UserControl So, now, I can visually draw, move, change all sorts of settings as needed, no problem. Now, I want this "MyCompoundDGVPlus" class as the basis for other classes, of which I will manipulate settings specific, but want all to have the same look / feel, and otherwise similar flow, hence the derivations. I've even set the "modifiers" setting to public, so I SHOULD be able to modify any of the properties of the controls at any derived level. So, now, I create a new subclass of "MyFirstDetailedDGVPlus" derived from "MyCompoundDGVPlus". Ok visually, all the label, button, datagridview appear. However, now I want to specifically define the columns of the datagridview here in this class visually, but its locked. However, the LABEL on the form, I CAN get all the property settings.... What am I missing.

• Changing the working directory for a process remotely

  I've got an application that has a bug right now, but we're unable to update the end-user to get the fix out. What a possible workaround would be is to change the working directory to the application's install directory, but from what I can tell, there's no way to do that outside of the program itself. Is there some sort of Windows API call that can change other processes' working directories, or is that not available due to security issues? I figure it's not possible.

• Best Approach to process images in Django

  I've have an application with Android front end and Django as the back end. As part of the answers here, I'm confused over the approach which I should take to send images to Django Server. I've 2 options at my disposal as Piro pointed out there. 1) Sending images as Multi Part entity 2) Send image as a String after encoding it using Base 64. So I am considering the approach that would make it easy to be processed by Django. The images are small in size (<200kb) and number (<10). Any suggestions or pointers are most welcome.

  Ubuntu uses upstart instead of sysvinit. However there are still runlevels and the links in them. I have installed tor and it has added itself to the startup of the OS. Now I want to remove it and the popular options are to remove the links of starting and stopping the service from runlevels or make the /etc/init.d/ script non-executable. This is fine but this will be problematic in case I want to put tor again on the startup list. How would I know to put the proper sequences in the proper runlevel directories. Is there any complete guide given? What are the rules for this? Any tools to manage the init? Please tell
