• Dual Boot Installing Ubuntu 12.04 with Windows 7 (64) on a non UEFI system

  I cannot seem to install the correct boot loader for a non-UEFI firmware system. I'm trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7 (64) which are technically compatible with GPT but for windows only if the firmware is UEFI enabled. My system uses the old BIOS system and does not support UEFI. Therefore, whenever I finish my Ubuntu install and try to install Windows I get a "cannot install to GPT partition type" error. Even if I use Gparted to format a special NTFS file format for windows it can't handle the GPT partition style because it doesn't have UEFI. But my ubuntu install always forces GPT during installation and never asks if I want to install the old BIOS style MBR instead. How do I resolve this? Both OS's will install fine on their own the problem is when I try to install the second OS it doesn't recognize any of the other's partitions and tries to rewrite it's own on top of the other. I've tried both OS's first and always run into the same problem. Since there is no way to make Windows recognize GPT without upgrading my Motherboard how do I tell Ubuntu to use the old BIOS MBR on install? Do I have to download a special Ubuntu with a specific grub version? or should I manaually configure my partition somehow to force it not to use GPT? Thank you,

• Composing programs from small simple pieces: OOP vs Functional Programming

  I started programming when imperative programming languages such as C were virtually the only game in town for paid gigs. I'm not a computer scientist by training so I was only exposed to Assembler and Pascal in school, and not Lisp or Prolog. Over the 1990s, Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) became more popular because one of the marketing memes for OOP was that complex programs could be composed of loosely coupled but well-defined, well-tested, cohesive, and reusable classes and objects. And in many cases that is quite true. Once I learned object-oriented programming my C programs became better because I structured them more like classes and objects. In the last few years (2008-2014) I have programmed in Ruby, an OOP language. However, Ruby has many functional programming (FP) features such as lambdas and procs, which enable a different style of programming using recursion, currying, lazy evaluation and the like. (Through ignorance I am at a loss to explain why these techniques are so great). Very recently, I have written code to use methods from the Ruby Enumerable library, such as map(), reduce(), and select(). Apparently this is a functional style of programming. I have found that using these methods significantly reduce code volume, and make my code easier to debug. Upon reading more about FP, one of the marketing claims made by advocates is that FP enables developers to compose programs out of small well-defined, well-tested, and reusable functions, which leads to less buggy code, and low code volume. QUESTIONS: Is the composition of complex program by using FP techniques contradictory to or complementary to composition of a complex program by using OOP techniques? In which situations is OOP more effective, and when is FP more effective? Is it possible to use both techniques in the same complex program? Do the techniques overlap or contradict each other?

• Uses of persistent data structures in non-functional languages

  Languages that are purely functional or near-purely functional benefit from persistent data structures because they are immutable and fit well with the stateless style of functional programming. But from time to time we see libraries of persistent data structures for (state-based, OOP) languages like Java. A claim often heard in favor of persistent data structures is that because they are immutable, they are thread-safe. However, the reason that persistent data structures are thread-safe is that if one thread were to "add" an element to a persistent collection, the operation returns a new collection like the original but with the element added. Other threads therefore see the original collection. The two collections share a lot of internal state, of course -- that's why these persistent structures are efficient. But since different threads see different states of data, it would seem that persistent data structures are not in themselves sufficient to handle scenarios where one thread makes a change that is visible to other threads. For this, it seems we must use devices such as atoms, references, software transactional memory, or even classic locks and synchronization mechanisms. Why then, is the immutability of PDSs touted as something beneficial for "thread safety"? Are there any real examples where PDSs help in synchronization, or solving concurrency problems? Or are PDSs simply a way to provide a stateless interface to an object in support of a functional programming style?

• How do I theme the Nautilus background image?

  I want to change the background image in the Nautilus file browser. My idea is to put my own style in the background. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 and Nautilus is version 3. I know that I have to change the nautilus.css file of the theme, but the problem is that there is not a parameter for the background. I just want to apply an image but I can't find the file or parameter to change it. The CSS file is in the directory /home/UserName/.theme/MyTheme/gtk-3.0/apps. I've changed the nautilus.css file. I wrote two new lines using CSS style but I don't know where the correct place is to put it. The lines are: background-image: url("carbon.jpg"); background-repeat: repeat; Obviously I put the image called carbon.jpg in the same directory of nautilus.css, but this change doesn't work because I need to know whichs class displays the Nautilus file browsing frame. If I find this class I guess that this code will work. If someone knows how to do it, please tell me because I really want to make this change.

• What are some good resources for creating a game engine in XNA?

  I'm currently a student game programmer working on an indie project. We have a team of eleven people (five programmers, four artists, and two audio designers) aboard, all working hard to help design this game. We've been meeting for months now and so far we have a pretty buffed out Game Design Document as well as much audio/visual concept art. Our programmers are itching to progress on our own end. Each person in our programming team is well versed in C++, but is very familiar with C#. We have enough experience and skill that we're confident that we will be successful with our game, and we're looking to build our own game engine in XNA as it seems like it would be worth our time and effort in the end. The game itself will be a 2D beat 'em up style game to be released over xbox live and the PC. It's play style will be similar to that of Castle Crashers or Scott Pilgrim vs The World. We want to design the game engine to allow us to better implement our assets into the game as well as to simplify the creation of design elements/mechanics. Currently between our programmers, we have books such as "XNA 4.0" and "Game Coding Complete, Third Edition," but we'd still like more information on both XNA and (especially) building a game engine from scratch. What are any other good books, websites, or resources we could use to further map out and program our game engine?

• Architecture of a "website generator" web application

  What is the most maintainable and efficient way to architect a web application who's purpose is to host and generate websites which can be customized to a certain degree? There are a lot of these style of applications in the wild that generate all kinds of sites, from sites that host World of Warcraft guilds like guildlaunch to other sites like my wedding for wedding site hosting. My question is, what is the basic architecture that these sites operate on? I imagine there are two ways of thinking about this. A central set of code that all sites on the host run against, and it acts differently based on which site was visited. In this manner, when the base code is updated all sites are updated simultaneously. Or, the code for an individual site exists in a silo, and is simply replicated to a new directory each time a site is created. When an update needs to be applied, the code is pushed out to each site silo. In my case, I am working in PHP with the CodeIgniter framework, however the answer need not be limited to this case. Which method (if any) creates a more maintainable and efficient architecture to manage this style of web application?

• Is there a way to save MS Word document as HTML w/o the ms proprietary stuff?

  So normally I wouldn't use this feature ("Save as Web Page") but I have large documents from clients they just want put on their site as HTML, and formatting it all by hand seems like a waste of time. I have tried "save as webpage" in Word 2007, but it produces all sorts of bad stuff. • Useful WatiN Extension Methods

  I've been doing a fair amount of UI testing using WatiN recently – here’s some extension methods I've found useful. This checks if a WatiN TextField is actually a hidden field. WatiN makes no distinction between text and hidden inputs, so this can come in handy if you render an input sometimes as hidden and sometimes as a visible text field. Note that this doesn't check if an input is visible (I've got another extension method for that in a moment), it checks if it’s hidden. public static bool IsHiddenField(this TextField textField) { if (textField == null || !textField.Exists) { return false; } var textFieldType = textField.GetAttributeValue("type"); return (textFieldType != null) && textFieldType.ToLowerInvariant() == "hidden"; } The next method quickly sets the value of a text field to a given string. By default WatiN types the text you give it into a text field one character at a time which can be necessary if you have behaviour you want to test which is triggered by individual key presses, but which most of time is just painfully slow; this method dumps the text in in one go. • "bug" in C++11 text by Stroustrup?

  I found an apparent contradiction in the c++ text having to do with the result of the c_str() function operating on std:strings (in my copy, the definition and contradiction are on p1040). First it defines the c_str() function as something that produces a 'C-style' (zero-terminated) string, but later it talks about how a C++ c_str value can have embed a 'C'-style, end-of-string terminators (i.e. NUL's) embedded in the string (that is defined by being NUL terminated). Um... does anyone else feel that this is a 'stretching' of the definition of a C-string beyond it's definition? I.e. I think what it means, is that if you were to look at the length() function as applied to the string, it will show a different end of string than using the C-definition of a z-string -- one that can contain any character except NUL, and is terminated by NUL. I likely don't have to worry about it in my of my programs, but it seems like a subtle distinction that makes a C++ c_str, not really a 'C'-string. Am I misunderstanding this issue? Thanks!

• What differences should I know? I just upgraded to 13.10 from 10.10 [on hold]

  I ran Ubuntu 10.10 for a long time because I liked the menu style. The change in GUI with the upgrades drove me nuts but I finally gave in and downloaded Saucy Salamander 13.10 x64. It's a fresh install running as a virtual machine guest in VMWare Workstation 9 on a Windows 7 x64 host. Well it looks like all those icons are still there on the side which I would be OK with if there were some way to bring back my menus. I have no organized way of accessing things now, or do I? That is the purpose for this question, maybe there is some functionality I just can't find but is there. Also all my fine tuning was gone. I used to be able to change DPI but that's gone. I went ahead and installed Unity Tweak Tool via sudo apt-get install unity-tweak-tool but I couldn't find an icon for it after I installed it.. because again no menu. So I did a search for it and found it there. I've changed the font and which side the window buttons appear on which is good enough for now. Anyway... any suggestions you may have for me I'm game. I'm a Windows 7 user primarily but I use Ubuntu every once in a while. I really liked the old style where everything was categorized like for Applications there was Accessories, Games, Graphics, Internet, Office, Sound & Video, Wine.

• WPF TabItem Custom ContentTemplate

  I have been strugging with this for a while, it would have been simple to do in WindowForms. I am making a IRC Client, there will be a number of Tabs one for each channel connect to. Each Tab needs to show a number of things, UserList, MessageHistory, Topic. In WindowForms i would just have inherited from TabItem, added some Custom Properties, and Controls, and done. In WPF i am having some slight issues with working out how to do it. We recently decided to upgrade to GWT 2.0. We've already updated the eclipse project and we are able to successfully run the application in dev-mode. We are struggling to get the application built using maven though. I'm hoping somebody can tell me what I'm doing wrong here since I'm running out of time on this. • OnSelectedIndexChange only fires on second click when using custom page validation script

  Okay.. this is hard to explain, so here it goes. I have an update panel which contains a number of controls. The update panel is triggered by the OnSelectedIndexChanged event of a dropdownlist called: ddlUSCitizenshipStatus. It works as expected when I selected a new item. However, if I leave ddlUSCitizenshipStatus with the default value, and then click "submit" button on the page, the requiredfieldvalidators say there is an error on ddlUSCitizenshipStatus (which it should, as I never selected a value). So I then choose a value, the error message goes away on ddlUSCitizenshipStatus, however the updatepanel does not refresh. I've debugged this locally and the OnSelectedIndexChanged event for ddlUSCitizenshipStatus does not fire. If I choose an item in the ddlUSCitizenshipStatus list a second time, the OnSelectedIndexChanged server event fires and the update panel refreshes and works as expected. The issue is, I have to select an item in ddlUSCitizenshipStatus twice, after failed validation, before the updatepanel it's sitting in updates.   Hello All, I'm probably overlooking something that will be obvious when I see the solution, but for now... I am attempting to use a custom cursor inside the chart area of a Toolkit chart. I have created a ControlTemplate for the chart, and a grid to contain the cursors. I show/hide the cursors, and attempt to move the containing Grid, using various Mouse events. The cursor is being displayed at the correct times, but I cannot get it to move to the correct position. • Panning Image Using Javascript in ASP.Net Page Overflows Div

  I have an ASP.Net page that contains a <div> with an <img> tag within. The image is large so the <div> is set with a size of 500x500 pixels with overflow set to scroll. I'm attempting to add image panning using a click and drag on the image. However, every time I begin dragging the image escapes the boundary of the element and consumes the entire page. • Silverlight: how to modify the width of ListBox Items in response to user input?

  I have a simple Silverlight 3 UserControl whose width increases or decreases based on user input. The controls become more wide or more narrow as desired, except for the ListBox items. The ListBox Items grow horizontally to fit their content regardless of HorizontalContentAlignment being set to 'Stretch'. Should I be able to set a property on ListBox.ItemContainerStyle to tell it to widen/narrow with the parent ListBox? There needs to be no horizontal scrolling within this Listbox. Or is there a way to specify the ItemTemplate's StackPanel width that can be modified at runtime? I have bound this to a StaticResource, but do not understand whether I should be able to change the resource value. Can I create and bind to a DependencyProperty of the UserControl itself?
