• Cleaning up nasty characters in PHP

  Hi folks, Got a little issue where my client is pasting in content from Word into my little text editor in a CMS. The double quotes are coming back encoded in what looks like some form of UTF. Any ideas if I can strip/replace these using PHP when they get displayed out of my mySQL table. • Calculating usage of localStorage space

  I am creating an app using the Bespin editor and HTML5's localStorage. It stores all files locally and helps with grammar, uses JSLint and some other parsers for CSS and HTML to aid the user. I want to calculate how much of the localStorage limit has been used and how much there actually is. Is this possible today? I was thinking for not to simply calculate the bits that are stored. But then again I'm not sure what more is there that I can't measure myself.

• What are the things I use every day programmed with?

  It isn't so interesting to find out what this text editor here or that IRC client there was programmed with, also it isn't really hard and neither are there really suprising things to come out. Wow so it was programmed in Python, I didn't expect that. What I'm asking is: What are the things that we daily see, use or generally need programmed with? To name a few (really only a few of those out there): My alarm clock It has many features so it would probably be hard programming it with assembler or whatever, so did they probably use a programming language? If yes, which? My electrical tooth brush The (stupid) board computer of my car. (6 years old, has few features but a red LED display showing me how cold/warm it is outside and how much gas I'm using up per hour at the moment) Those (old) plastic mini-mini computers with the LCD(?) displays that only had one game available on them: PacMan, tetris or so. I'm not directly thinking of this but it may be similar: Other, probably more interesting, things I didn't mention

• Is MacBook powerful enough to do Ipad development? or do I need a MacBook Pro?

  The title probably says it all. Considering an ipad's processor is nothing compared to a macbook, I would think a Macbook should be more than capable to run the simulator. However, not knowing much about iphone/ipad development, I'd like to get some opinions on this. for e.g. how many apps are typically need to be run for ipad dev (editor, debugger, perf monitor, trace log, etc). are these apps resource (memory, cpu) intensive? please do not take into consideration the actual image, 3d, video, sound development. I understand one would need quite a beefy machine to produce these type of creative assets. What I'm looking at is a machine to do code development, physics, putting together the produced assets (images, vector graphics, 3d video, sound, etc).

• Disabling single line copy in Visual Studio

  Is there anyway to disable the rather annoying feature that Visual Studio (2008 in my case) has of copying the line (with text on it) the cursor is on when CTRL-C is pressed and no selection is made? I know of the option to disable copying blank lines. But this is driving me crazy as well. ETA: I'm not looking to customize the keyboard shortcut. ETA-II: I am NOT looking for "Tools-Options-Text Editor-All Languages-Apply cut or copy to blank lines...".

• making certain cells of an ExtJS GridPanel un-editable

  I currently have a GridPanel with the Ext.ux.RowEditor plugin. Four fields exist in the row editor: port, ip address, subnet and DHCP. If the DHCP field (checkbox) of the selected row is checked, I need to make the other three fields un-editable. I've been trying to perform this code when the beforeedit event is triggered, but to no avail... I've only found ways to make the entire column un-editable.   I am using Ubuntu 9.10 and I am a bit of a robotics enthusiast. I have used KiKS (in MATLAB for simulating Khepera robots), MobotSim (in Windows, simulates a point like robot using a BASIC editor) and Player/Stage (with C/C++ on Ubuntu 9.04). My question, can MS Robotics Studio be installed in Ubuntu Linux using Wine (I am using 1.1.31) ? Has anyone done it ? Any other way to install MS Robotics Studio in Unix (Any flavour) ? • Finding the best folder for all users on a Windows machine

  We are making a game which will add a level editor feature soon. We want the user to be able to put levels he's downloaded in a folder and then play it in the game, without any hassle. So, we're looking for a folder that anybody can find, open, write, read, and is multiuser. On Windows Vista / 7, the folder /Users/Public/ look like a great candidate. However, It's not listed in the .net enum System.Environment.SpecialFolder. I have went through them all, and checked what they yield on different Windows versions, and none live up to my requirements. I did find Environment.SpecialFolder.CommonApplicationData, that kinda works, but that folder is hidden (C:\ProgramData) and I assume most users don't display hidden folders. As it stands now, it looks like we'll have to settle for the personal documents folder, but we'd really like a multi user folder? Anyone have any tips? (Hard coding c:\Users\Public\ is out of the question, it will only work on english systems)

I looked into visual studio forms designer articles in msdn and also studied open-source SharpDevelop editor. Both the examples host visual studio's windows forms designer to provide form-design service in their respective applications. My question is - Does it imply any licensing issue with Microsoft for directly hosting their Visual Studio Forms designer in my own application ? I don't want move ahead without proper and correct information. Can anybody here help me out if there's any licensing issues in case I want to host visual studio windows fomr designer in my own application. If there's any such licensing implication - then how does Sharp-Develop do this ?

• Using emacs across many hosts

  On a daily basis I: use multiple workstations running either Linux, Windows, or MacOS X edit files on additional Linux hosts that are not any of the workstations mentioned above The only common element here is that the internet connects all of these hosts: workstations and servers. I can keep all of the config files in sync on my workstations too and can run an X server on all of them. What's the right way of running emacs? I don't want to sacrifice any features. In my ideal world I can type 'emacs foo.txt' on a remote host and some magic happens via X forwarding to display the file in my workstation's existing emacs session. Non-solutions tramp: when I'm manipulating a remote host an editor is just part of my workflow. I need a terminal open so I can run other commands quickly. tramp is all wrong for this. ncurses emacs: sucks, I want the graphical kind If you don't have a positive answer to my question, please don't just guess. • WPF Window Inheritance

  I have an application that will run in two modes, each with very similar displays. The application is supposed to allow easy modification of a user interface. One of the features is that it has to display the user interface. Both of these windows look the same, just one has more menus than the other. I'd like to just create a base template (the user visual) and then inherit it for the editor. That way if one interface changes, both of them change. But this doesn't seem to be possible using WPF. I try to inherit and I get warnings about hiding members. I also don't see how I'm going to append new menus to the base template. Is what I'm trying to do possible? Is there a better way that I'm supposed to be doing this? It seems like I'm fighting the way that they want me to make the application.

  I want to do some kind of image editor, after I upload more images I want to make a list with all the thumbnails! After, I want to be able to click on one thumb and rotate, duplicate, drag and drop (to change positions of the images), and delete the image. I want all the images to be in a php array. If an image is deleted I want to delete the row from array too. If a image is drag-and-dropped I want to change the position in the array too. Ok, after the user uploads all the images and modifies some of them, how can I make a DONE button to save the positions of the images? For this small project how do you suggest I save the images? (to make a table in mysql and store the names of the images in the database depending on the session id? depending on the IP?) Any suggestions are welcome!

• Fill a rails form with a hashmap

  Hey, I have a difficult situation. I let the the user create a form through a Rich Text Editor and then I save this. So for example, I save this literally into my DB: http://pastebin.com/DNdeetJp (how can you post HTML here? It gets interpreted, so now I use pastebin...) On another page I wrap this in a form_tag and it gets presented as it should be. What I want to do is save this as a template and save the answers as a hashmap to my DB. This works well, but the problem is I want to recreate what checkbox/radiobutton/... is selected when the user goes back to the page. So I want to fill the form with the answers from the hashmap. Is there a way to use a 'dummy' model or something else to accomplish this? Thanks!

• PHP: Replace umlauts with closest 7-bit ASCII equivalent in an UTF-8 string

  What I want to do is to remove all accents and umlauts from a string, turning "lärm" into "larm" or "andré" into "andre". What I tried to do was to utf8_decode the string and then use strtr on it, but since my source file is saved as UTF-8 file, I can't enter the ISO-8859-15 characters for all umlauts - the editor inserts the UTF-8 characters. Obviously a solution for this would be to have an include that's an ISO-8859-15 file, but there must be a better way than to have another required include? echo strtr(utf8_decode($input), 'ŠŒŽšœžŸ¥µÀÁÂÃÄÅÆÇÈÉÊËÌÍÎÏÐÑÒÓÔÕÖØÙÚÛÜÝßàáâãäåæçèéêëìíîïðñòóôõöøùúûüýÿ', 'SOZsozYYuAAAAAAACEEEEIIIIDNOOOOOOUUUUYsaaaaaaaceeeeiiiionoooooouuuuyy'); UPDATE: Maybe I was a bit inaccurate with what I try to do: I do not actually want to remove the umlauts, but to replace them with their closest "one character ASCII" aequivalent.

  i am on a mac (10.6.3) with snow leopard. i hear that the assembly language i work with has to be valid with the chipset that you use. i am completly new to this i have a basic background in C and Objective-C programming and an almost strong background in php. Ive always wanted to see what assembly is all about. the tutorial ill be looking at is by VTC via (http://www.vtc.com/products/Assembly-Language-Programming-Tutorials.htm). what i want to know is are the tutorials that im about to do compatible with the version of mac that i have? sorry i am completly new to this language although i do recall studying some of it way way back in the day. i do have xcode and what i'm wondering is what kind of document would i open in xcode to work with assembly and does the mac have a built in hex editor (when it comes time to needing it)? thanks

Actually I'm not so interested if it's valid but if there would be any problems with any web browser or email client ( the editor is used for composing a html email ). Firefox and Thunderbird seem to be fine with it.

  Hi I've been trying to create a GUI using netbeans, that includes a dialog similar to Netbean's own "property dialog" that appears when designing. ie. a dialog that contains a table that can be expanded by tree nodes. Something like the dialog on this page, http://platform.netbeans.org/tutorials/nbm-property-editors.html As far as I can understand, the page I linked to describes a custom editor I can set up for use within netbeans while designing - I'm just looking for a way to doing something similar for my actual application I'm writing. • Tools for code snippet execution

  By "code snippet execution", I mean the ability to write a few lines of code, run and test it without having to fire up an IDE and create a dummy project. It's incredibly useful for helping people with a small code sample without creating a project, compiling everything cleanly, sending them the code snippet and deleting the project. I'm not asking about the best code snippets or a snippet editor or where to store snippets! For C#, I use Snippet Compiler. For Java, I use Eclipse Scrapbook. For LINQ, I use LINQPad. Any suggestions for other (better?) tools? e.g. is there one for Java that doesn't involve firing up Eclipse? What about C?

• JDT: How to retrieve the correct IJavaElement to a corresponding RefactoringDescriptor?

  I implement the IRefactoringExecutionListener interface in an Eclipse plug-in to get notified when the user refactors his code, so I can update a visual editor displaying corresponding UML Boxes accordingly. Now I have a RefactoringDescriptor and cannot manage to map it's information (project name as String, new name as String and resource path as IPath) to my model. My model is basically a Hashmap in which fully qualified names (String) of types are mapped instances of IJavaElement, or more precisely: IType. How can I "convert" between the two representations so I can update my model? Regards, Chris

• Eclipse autocompletion problem

  Just installed Eclipse Helios (Win7 64) and I'm having a strange problem. I type syso-Ctrl-Space which is expected to complete to System.out.println("") but it doesn't work! I searched the web for about an hour now, I set Preferences Java Editor Content Assist to defaults, nothing. Everything else seems to work. Ideas? To be clear: the shortcut works, it completes everything except "syso" as seen so far, on syso (also tried sysout) it says "No Default Proposals". I couldn't find this kind of shortcuts in the Content Assist, but I set them to default anyway.
