  I heard recently that Nginx has added caching to its reverse proxy feature. I looked around but couldn't find much info about it. I want to set up Nginx as a caching reverse proxy in front of Apache/Django: to have Nginx proxy requests for some (but not all) dynamic pages to Apache, then cache the generated pages and serve subsequent requests for those pages from cache. Ideally I'd want to invalidate cache in 2 ways: Set an expiration date on the cached item To explicitly invalidate the cached item. E.g. if my Django backend has updated certain data, I'd want to tell Nginx to invalidate the cache of the affected pages Is it possible to set Nginx to do that? How?

• Debug unstable Apache server under Debian

  Since yesterday my Apache server that runs on a Debian machine runs very unstable. Sometiems my websites load and sometimes not. I think it has to do with the memory since my Apache log is full of Out of memory (allocated 262144) (tried to allocate 4480 bytes). I also attached a screenshot of the memory graph. A server restart resolves the problem temporarily. I looked at the processes that are using memory but the biggest one is MySQL with 6.5%. Where else can look for the problem? Edit: I did a free -m right after rebooting and one about 2 hours later. • Entourage to Outlook Migration questions

  I am currently migrating a users information from a pop email account to my exchange server. I have already migrated them over to my hosted exchange, and their email is following properly. Now, the user is moving from Entourage on a Mac (10.7) to Outlook 2010 on a PC (Windows 7). I was wondering what the easiest way was to migrate him since there is no .pst files. I have been able to get his email over by dragging the inbox from Entourage to the desktop, then converting the files to .eml using IMAPSize, importing them to Outlook Express (which will only work on Windows XP), then exporting to a pst, then importing in the new account. Takes awhile with large emails, but it works. The issue I am now having is for calendar items. I exported the calendar and got a folder with all the .ics files, but Outlook 2010 doesn't seem to have an easy way to import all of them. Any thoughts?

• Why is my concurrency capacity so low for my web app on a LAMP EC2 instance?

  I come from a web developer background and have been humming along building my PHP app, using the CakePHP framework. The problem arose when I began the ab (Apache Bench) testing on the Amazon EC2 instance in which the app resides. I'm getting pretty horrendous average page load times, even though I'm running a c1.medium instance (2 cores, 2GB RAM), and I think I'm doing everything right. I would run: ab -n 200 -c 20 http://localhost/heavy-but-view-cached-page.php Here are the results: Concurrency Level: 20 Time taken for tests: 48.197 seconds Complete requests: 200 Failed requests: 0 Write errors: 0 Total transferred: 392111200 bytes HTML transferred: 392047600 bytes Requests per second: 4.15 [#/sec] (mean) Time per request: 4819.723 [ms] (mean) Time per request: 240.986 [ms] (mean, across all concurrent requests) Transfer rate: 7944.88 [Kbytes/sec] received While the ab test is running, I run VMStat, which shows that Swap stays at 0, CPU is constantly at 80-100% (although I'm not sure I can trust this on a VM), RAM utilization ramps up to about 1.6G (leaving 400M free). Load goes up to about 8 and site slows to a crawl. Here's what I think I'm doing right on the code side: In Chrome browser uncached pages typically load in 800-1000ms, and cached pages load in 300-500ms. Not stunning, but not terrible either. Thanks to view caching, there might be at most one DB query per page-load to write session data. So we can rule out a DB bottleneck. I have APC on. I am using Memcached to serve the view cache and other site caches. xhprof code profiler shows that cached pages take up 10MB-40MB in memory and 100ms - 1000ms in wall time. Pages that would be the worst offenders would look something like this in xhprof: Total Incl. Wall Time (microsec): 330,143 microsecs Total Incl. CPU (microsecs): 320,019 microsecs Total Incl. MemUse (bytes): 36,786,192 bytes Total Incl. Some gotcha with the EC2? Or is it my code? Some obvious setting I should look into? Too many DNS lookups? What am I missing? I really want to get to 1,000 concurrency capacity, but at this rate, it ain't gonna happen.

• Should I install an AV product on my domain controllers?

  Should I run a server-specific antivirus, regular antivirus, or no antivirus at all on my servers, particularly my Domain Controllers? Here's some background about why I'm asking this question: I've never questioned that antivirus software should be running on all windows machines, period. Lately I've had some obscure Active Directory related issues that I have tracked down to antivirus software running on our domain controllers. The specific issue was that Symantec Endpoint Protection was running on all domain controllers. Occasionally, our Exchange server triggered a false-positive in Symantec's "Network Threat Protection" on each DC in sequence. After exhausting access to all DCs, Exchange began refusing requests, presumably because it could not communicate with any Global Catalog servers or perform any authentication. Outages would last about ten minutes at a time, and would occur once every few days. It took a long time to isolate the problem because it was not easily reproducible and generally investigation was done after the issue resolved itself.

  Yesterday I visited the offices of RailTel - a public company in India that provides communication backbone to the Indian Railways, they had a very sophisticated setup of Optical Fiber cables for data transmission. They said that this is a private network for internal use only. Then when I was in the Exchange Office - the main communication office, a place where they actually use those communication channels. They said that we could connect to the Intranet and as well as the Internet! My question is, that how is this possible? How can privately laid optical fibers connect globally? On google, I picked up the term internet exhange? But this has got me confused further, why would a private network want to go to this exchange? Please explain me in very simple terms, how does this all work? If this is just a connection of wires, then why charge so much for little bandwidth? Thanks.

  I have a CentOS server fully dedicated to MySQL 5.5 (with innodb tables mostly). Server has 32 GB RAM, SSD disks, and avarage memory usage looks like this: So about 25GB is in use and about 6.5GB is cached. I am experiencing performance problems with WRITE queries, so I was thinking, is this the optimal cache size? I might increase innodb buffer size, so that linux cache would become smaller, or decrease it, so it would be bigger. What is the optimal used/cached memory balance for busy MySQL server on linux?

  Usually when I setup a new Ubuntu VM, i keep the eth0 in NAT mode to get the internet & I add a eth1 interface in HostOnly mode so that I can ssh. But using this devStack guide : Running a Cloud in a VM, it looks like it tried to use eth0 as the public interface (install got stuck because eth0 lost the network). I know an OpenStack setup usually requires two NICs, so I'm wondering what is the correct configuration for my VM.

  I have a xen server with xen-4.1.3, linux-image-3.2.0-3-amd64, debian squeeze and 16Gb of RAM. The domain-0 has 1Gb of ram, the rest of memory belongs to the hypervisor. I want to start a guest domain with a minimal amount of memory and increase it runtime later. Every example of this scenerio that I can find says to first boot into single user mode. What if my server is currently running in multiuser mode and I have no sessions open as root.   I have a Cisco ASA5510 and articles related to ASA and mulitple Public IP says this cant be done. My question is how to best solve a scenario like this: I have 3 zones, Outside, Inside and DMZ Outside is Internet Inside is Client machines DMZ is a zone for servers related to external and internal services. My scenario is a bit more complex, but to keep things simple this will do: I want to place an Exchange server and a web server (externally reachable in the DMZ zone) The webserver uses both TCP80/443, the Exchange server uses 443 So to the problem: With the ASA only having one public IP, how would you make a DNAT to port 443 on both the internal hosts behind 1 Public IP? Usually, when i do this kind of scenario With Linux boxes i use alias Interfaces like eth0:0, eth0:1 and set 1 Public IP on each. To me this must be a pretty common scenario, any ideas on how to solve it With ASA? /KGDI

This counter reflects the percent of total time SQL Server spent running on CPU (user mode + privilege mode). The book, Sql Server 2008 Internals and Troubleshooting, says that anything greater than 80% is a problem. How is it possible for that counter to be over 100%?

• NHibernate IUserType convert nullable DateTime to DB not-null value

  I have legacy DB that store dates that means no-date as 9999-21-31, The column Till_Date is of type DateTime not-null="true". in the application i want to build persisted class that represent no-date as null, So i used nullable DateTime in C# //public DateTime? TillDate {get; set; } I created IUserType that knows to convert the entity null value to DB 9999-12-31 but it seems that NHibernate doesn't call SafeNullGet, SafeNullSet on my IUserType when the entity value is null, and report a null is used for not-null column. I tried to by-pass it by mapping the column as not-null="false" (changed only the mapping file, not the DB) but it still didn't help, only now it tries to insert the null value to the DB and get ADOException. Any knowledge if NHibernate doesn't support IUseType that convert null to not-null values? • Path is too long

  Bugged by the irritating "Path is too long after being fully qualified" error while running in the Development Fabric? The solution is pretty funny and not so obvious unfortunately. The culprit here is not your app, but the Development Fabric. The DevFab accumulates a lot of temporary junk comprising of local storage locations, cached binaries, configuration, diagnostics information and cached compiled web site content files over its lifetime. They are typically stored at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\dftmp. The Azure Tools will periodically clean this up, but some time you have to play janitor and take the law in your hands ;). The csrun.exe has quite a few tricks up its sleeve. One of them is the ability to clean the development fabric's temporary junk accumulated over time. You can do this by  running the Azure command prompt with elevated privileges and running csrun.exe /devfabric:shutdown and then csrun.exe /devfabric:clean If the problem still persists then the application directory structure could indeed be too long. A workaround to this is changing the Development Fabric temporary directory to point to a shorter path. The temporary directory path can be addressed by an environment variable _CSRUN_STATE_DIRECTORY. You can try setting its value to something like "C:\WA" or "C:\A" this will reduce some 25+ characters from your path. Do not forget to close Visual Studio and expressly shutdown the dev fab with csrun.exe /devfabric:shutdown (Under elevated privileges of course). • Google CDN or Akamai

  We combine and minify our JS with Minify - the combined JS is then cached on Akamai. I'm suggesting to my supervisor that we put JQuery and JQueryUI on Google CDN and take it out of our combined JS. The benefits I see are parallel downloads, significantly smaller Akamai cache hit, and the high potential the user will have JQuery from Google CDN cached in his/her browser when he/she visits our site so no download will be required at all. I also pointed out how pointing to the major version CDN URL //ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1/jquery.min.js will eliminate the need for us to micro-manage our JQuery version control, and that if a new release introduces a bug, we simply point the CDN URL to a stable minor version of our choice until the issue is resolved. My supervisor disagrees and thinks keeping it on Akamai is the way to go. Any insight as to which is going to be faster here? I looked for some benchmarks and references online but they are either out-dated or merely talk about Google wanting to acquire Akamai. EDIT: Some further research has pointed me to an article mentioning how 'latest version' CDN URL's use short expires headers so it might be more optimal to use /jquery/1.7/. I'm fine with this - the general question still remains.
