• Unlock the Java EE 6 Platform using NetBeans 7.1

  NetBeans IDE provide tools, templates, and code generators that can be used for the specifications that are part of the Java EE 6 Platform. In a recent article Geertjan builds a simple end-to-end application using the standard Model-View-Controller architecture. It uses Java Persistence API 2, Servlets 3, JavaServer Faces 2, Enterprise Java Beans 3.1, Context and Dependency Injection 1.0, and Java API for RESTful Web Services 1.1 showing the complete stack. • Real life example of an agile game development process

  I'm trying to learn about applying agile methodologies to game development. But seems to be impossible to find real life examples. What I am looking for are things like; Initial user stories Final user stories (complete, covering the entire game requirements) Acceptance criteria Task list Sprint backlogs (before and after each sprint) The agile books seem to have some limited examples, many of which seem contrived. In this era of open source software, there must be an documented example of the process applied to a game that is publicly available. I am asking specifically about games because they are so different from normal applications. Regular applications are built to all users to complete specific tasks in order to get stuff done(book a room, print a report etc). People play games for much less tangible reasons, so I think the process is significantly different. [it doesn't have to be scrum, it could be any process, just needs to be a real life example game and be reasonably complete]

• October 2012 Chicago IT Architects Group Meeting Recap

  It seemed very ironic that the day we have a presentation on the architecture of building applications for Windows 8 the Surface tablet is opened for pre-order.  Tom Benton started the evening enlightening the attendees on the user experience for those who had not seen it yet.  He even passed around his table from last year’s Build conference for everyone to play with.  This was followed with a tour of the capabilities and structures that make up a Windows Store App on Windows 8.  Taking it to its conclusion, he rounded out the discussion by covering the certification and deployment process. • Hardware instancing for voxel engine

  i just did the tutorial on Hardware Instancing from this source: http://www.float4x4.net/index.php/2011/07/hardware-instancing-for-pc-in-xna-4-with-textures/. Somewhere between 900.000 and 1.000.000 draw calls for the cube i get this error "XNA Framework HiDef profile supports a maximum VertexBuffer size of 67108863." while still running smoothly on 900k. That is slightly less then 100x100x100 which are a exactly a million. Now i have seen voxel engines with very "tiny" voxels, you easily get to 1.000.000 cubes in view with rough terrain and a decent far plane. Obviously i can optimize a lot in the geometry buffer method, like rendering only visible faces of a cube or using larger faces covering multiple cubes if the area is flat. But is a vertex buffer of roughly 67mb the max i can work with or can i create multiple?

• How to implement soft edge areas with particles

  My game is created using Phaser, but the question itself is engine-agnostic. In my game I have several environments, essentially polygonal areas that player characters can move into and be affected by. For example ice, fire, poison etc' The graphic element of these areas is the color filled polygon area itself, and particles of the suitable type (in this example ice shards). This is how I'm currently implementing this - with a polygon mask covering a tilesprite with the particle pattern: The hard edge looks bad. I'd like to improve by doing two things: 1. Making the polygon fill area to have a soft edge, and blend into the background. 2. Have some of the shards go out of the polygon area, so that they are not cut in the middle and the area doesn't have a straight line for example (mockup): I think 1 can be achieved with blurring the polygon, but I'm not sure how to go about with 2. How would you go about implementing this?

• Game testing on Android - emulator or real devices?

  I am working at a localization agency and we have been approached by a client about testing their games on iOS as well as Android. Testing on iOS seems fairly easy as we can just buy a couple of devices and we should be covered. For Android it seems to be completely different. From what i found, the emulator can cover all API levels, screen sizes and such, but i hear it's buggy and nothing could replace testing on real devices. With the vast amount of Android devices out there and the rate at which new devices are released it seems impossible to keep up. How can i test games (localization and functional) on Android covering all compatible devices?

Also, if you are an MSDN subscriber you should be able to get a code from the MSDN site that will give you a free year (saving $49 US) but you will still need to submit some form of payment (e.g. credit or debit card) for verification purposes and so that they can automatically rebill you at the end of the subscription year (unless you’ve cancelled your account for some reason, of course). • What are some good, simple examples for queues?

  I'm teaching CS2 (Java and data structures), and am having some difficulty coming up with good examples to use when teaching queues. The two major applications I use them for are multithreaded message passing (but MT programming is out of scope for the course), and BFS-style algorithms (and I won't be covering graphs until later in the term). I also want to avoid contrived examples. Most things that I think of, if I were actually going to solve them in a single-threaded fashion I would just use a list rather than a queue. I tend to only use queues when processing and discovery are interleaved (e.g. search), or in other special cases like length-limited buffers (e.g. maintaining last N items). To the extent practical, I am trying to teach my students good ways to actually do things in real programs, not just toys to show off a feature. Any suggestions of good, simple algorithms or applications of queues that I can use as examples but that require a minimum of other prior knowledge?
