  Hi I am setting up development environment based on SLED, we have installed required software as root user. We have configuered users Login through NIS. Developers needs access to almost all partitions for complete access including write and execute when they login using their ID's, Log in through their own id's is mandatory .   I'm looking for a good ruler to use to measure distances in a browser. I use Firefox. Any good suggestions that are currently being used by other developers. I have firebug, but I don't think it has a ruler. Does it? I would think a ruler would have made it to firebug, but there doesn't seem to be one, or I'm not looking in the right location. Thanks

  We are interested in implementing RemoteApp on Windows 2008 R2 to serve out a few programs. Since the developers use shared memory to pass messages between processes, it is necessary that we provide them with a solution that will allow this. They have researched and discovered that if the applications exist in the same terminal server session that they will be able to access shared memory. Is there a way to absolutely ensure that multiple RemoteApps are running within the same session (with the same user) so that they can access the same shared memory?

  Is it possible to "share" a VirtualBox snapshot? I have a "baseline" VirtualBox machine, and I would like to be able to take a snapshot, and send it to another user which has the same baseline machine. The scenario is that the baseline machine is used for testing, and I want to allow testers to create snapshots which describe a certain system state, and send that snapshot to developers to further examination. EDIT: To clarify, I would like to be able to export snapshots "incrementally" without having to export the entire machine as an appliance.

• Why do "ls" in UNIX and "dir" in DOS have different names?

  Why do they have different names for the same command, listing a directory? Surely, they could have talked to each other and agreed on one common name, such as for example cd which is the same for both unix and dos. This decision to have different names has created many headaches for developers and users and also increased incompatibility between the two systems. Did they do it on purpose? Then how come "cd" is the same?

  I am running a 6.5 version of Teamcity on a Debian Squeeze server and I use OpenLDAP to authenticate users. I know I can use LDAPS to be able to use encrypted password authentication, however this has been deprecated by the OpenLDAP developers, see: http://www.openldap.org/faq/data/cache/605.html I would like to know if there is a way to configure LDAP authentication in Teamcity to use StartTLS on port 389. • Deny login from certain hosts if logging in with specific sql credentials

  I want to stop some of our developers from connecting to the production sql server using a specific sql account. They have rights to connect through windows authentication with lower rights. They claim that changing the password will affect too many other processes running on our processing machine. So I want to deny access if they're connecting from there dev machines for now. Another way this would work is if I could just allow connections from one specific host.

  I'm trying to configure my Windows 2008 servers so that my developers can view their status without needing to log on to the box or be an admin. Unfortunately, the permissions set in Windows 2008 for remote non-admin users don't include the ability to enumerate or otherwise query services. This causes anything that contacts the SCM on the far end to fail (Win32_Service, sc.exe, services.msc etc). How do I set up permissions so that they can at least list the services and see if they are running?

• How to get hibernate working on Windows 8?

  I have been using Windows 8 x64 Developers Preview as my primary OS on my laptop. Unfortunately I have been unable to enable hibernate (tried through registry and through powercfg.cpl). The closest I have got is that I was able to enable hibernate on pressing of power button, but that just turns of screen and keeps everything else running, I have to force shutdown to do anything. Do you know how I can get hibernate to work on my Dell Studio 17?

• Cannot access the EC2 server - permissions problems, ssh is dead

  One of our developers worked on a beta server and accidentally changed the permissions of the whole system (chmod /) to root. Due to that, services are unable to access files, and we can't ssh to the machine (permission denied on the key) (UPDATE: ssh is dead after reboot, probably can't start). Does Amazon has an option to browse files / physically access the machine? Any other creative solution?

I'm using www-data group to control access to /var/www folder. They are able to upload the files successfully but when they try to access that file in a browser, they get a 403 forbidden error. How do I make sure that when the files are uploaded, the permissions are set right?

• GIT server with username and password authentication

  I would like to set a GIT server and let my developers to login using username and password in order to commit and make changes to the projects. I need also to manage developer access to projects (I think I should use gitolite for this). How can I do that? I am used to SVN which is easy because you can set username and password for each developer, which can easily access the repository without having the generate an ssh key and put it on the server.
