  • Isn't it better to use a single try catch instead of tons of TryParsing and other error handling sometimes?

    I know people say it's bad to use exceptions for flow control and to only use exceptions for exceptional situations, but sometimes isn't it just cleaner and more elegant to wrap the entire block in a try-catch? For example, let's say I have a dialog window with a TextBox where the user can type input in to be parsed in a key-value sort of manner. This situation is not as contrived as you might think because I've inherited code that has to handle this exact situation (albeit not with farm animals). A lot of things can go wrong though. The user could enter in the wrong number of parameters. The user can enter the input in an incorrect format. The user could specify numbers too large or too small for the data type to handle. All these different errors could be handled without exceptions through the use of TryParse, checking how many parameters the user tried to use for a specific animal, checking if the parameter is too large or too small for the data type (because TryParse just returns 0), but every one should result in the same thing: A MessageBox appearing telling the user that the inputted data is invalid and to fix it. My boss doesn't want different message boxes for different errors. So instead of doing all that, why not just wrap the block in a try-catch and in the catch statement just display that error message box and let the user try again? Maybe this isn't the best example but think of any other scenario where there would otherwise be tons of error handling that could be substituted for a single try-catch. Is that not the better solution?

    In Silverlight project I have this exception when I tried to Add a new object to a DataGrid when a button is clicked. In the DomainService class.. I know I have to implement the Add operation for the new Entity I'm putting, but how can I do that? When stepping through the AssertConfigurationIsValid() method, Cache works but EmailService fails at the GetInstance method in the following line: private readonly IConfiguration _configuration; public EmailService() { _configuration = ObjectFactory.GetInstance<IConfiguration>(); } If I remove IEmailService, the same 202 error is thrown at IUserSession.   • VSTS 2010 SGEN : error : Could not load file or assembly (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131515)

    Hi ! I am experiencing a strange issue with VS2010. We use TFS to build our API dlls and we used to reference them in our projects usign a mapped network drive that was fully trusted. We have been working like that for at least two years and everything worked perfectly. Today, I converted a webapp to vs2010 and when I compile it in Release, it's giving me: SGEN : error : Could not load file or assembly 'file:///L:\Api\Release API_20100521.1\Release\CS.API.Exceptions.dll' or one of its dependencies. Operation is not supported. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131515) The strange thing is that it's working when it's under the Debug profile... I tried adding the <runtime> <loadFromRemoteSources enabled="true" /> </runtime> into app.config and still no luck (See http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/msbuild/thread/d12f6301-85bf-4b9e-8e34-a06398a60df0 and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd409252(VS.100).aspx) I am pretty sure that this issue is from visual studio or msbuild, as our code won't run from a network share when in prod because all the referenced dll's are copied into the bin folder. If anyone has an solution (or just an idea for a search path) please let me know !

I defined an XML layout w/ a default image. I try to load a bm on the SDCard (if present - it is). If not it shows the default image. Anyway..   • Ext.data.Store, Javascript Arrays and Ext.grid.ColumnModel

    I am using Ext.data.Store to call a PHP script which returns a JSON response with some metadata about fields that will be used in a query (unique name, table, field, and user-friendly title). I then loop through each of the Ext.data.Record objects, placing the data I need into an array (this_column), push that array onto the end of another array (columns), and eventually pass this to an Ext.grid.ColumnModel object. The problem I am having is - no matter which query I am testing against (I have a number of them, varying in size and complexity), the columns array always works as expected up to columns[15]. At columns[16], all indexes from that point and previous are filled with the value of columns[15]. This behavior continues until the loop reaches the end of the Ext.data.Store object, when the entire arrays consists of the same value.   • Handle exceptions with WPF and MVVM

    I am attempting to build an application using WPF and the MVVM pattern. I have my Views being populated from my ViewModel purely through databinding. I want to have a central place to handle all exceptions which occur in my application so I can notify the user and log the error appropriately. I know about Dispatcher.UnhandledException but this does not do the job as exception that occur during databinding are logged to the output windows. Because my View is databound to my ViewModel the entire application is pretty much controlled via databinding so I have no way to log my errors. Is there a way to generically handle the exceptions raised during databinding, without having to put try blocks around all my ViewModel public's?     Hi, I was trying to achieve master-detail with 2 ListBox, 2 DomainDataSource and a IValueConverter, when entering the page it throws the random error it does when your xaml is invalid: "AG_E_PARSER_BAD_PROPERTY_VALUE [Line: 24 Position: 61]" Which is in fact the start position of where I am binding the listbox selected item with converter to the parameter's value of my DomainDataSource. I've deployed the webpage and the WCF webservice to that machine.     I am trying to use a custom title to include an image button to the title bar. I got a lot of help form this post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2569753/android-adding-button-to-the-title-of-the-app, but could not get it work for my ListActivity. In a nutshell, following is what I have: I hide the titlebar in the AndroidManifest.xml The specify a relative layout for the custom title (workorder_list_titlebar.xml) My Activity Class looks like the following: public class WorkOrderListActivity extends ListActivity { String[] orders={"WO-12022009", "WO-12302009", "WO-02122010", "02152010"}; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_CUSTOM_TITLE); this.getWindow().setFeatureInt(Window.FEATURE_CUSTOM_TITLE, R.layout.workorder_list_titlebar); setContentView(R.layout.workorder_list); setListAdapter(new ArrayAdapter(this,R.layout.workorder_list, R.id.label,orders)); } } When I ran the app, I got AndroidRuntimeException: You cannot combine custom titles with other title features. Base on the stack trace, the exception was thrown by com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow.requestFeature(PhoneWindow.java:183), that was triggered by setlistAdapter call. Does anyone have the same problem with ListActivity? Also once I manage to get this work, how do I attach listeners to the image button for it to do something? Thanks in advance.

I have given my app the INTERNET permission. I'm developing with eclipse. I've seen it mentioned that I might need to configure a proxy but since the web service i'm calling is on port 80 this shouldn't matter should it? I can call the method with the browser. Any ideas?
