• How to restore missing space in NTFS file systems

  I have a 40 GB USB hard drive formatted with NTFS on a PC running Windows XP Pro, SP3. I am trying to free as much space as possible. Windows Explorer tells me that I have about 200 MB of files on the drive (showing hidden and system files). When I show drive properties however it shows 73% free, around 10 GB used. I ran CHKDSK and it found all kinds of problems. Now running defrag and it is behaving as if there were 10 GB of files, but I can't access them anywhere. How to find and remove this extra 10GB?

• How do I refresh Disk Utility?

  I do a lot of live system building, which eventually involves imaging a USB drive with the built binary image: dd if=binary.img of=/dev/sdX sync ...where /dev/sdX is a USB drive. As part of my workflow, I like to have Ubuntu's Disk Utility open so I can verify the drive letter and unmount anything that gets mounted automatically. I also use it to create extra partitions for persistence. The trouble is, after writing the image to the device — and even after the sync operation — Disk Utility doesn't show the new partition. It just shows free space. GParted sees it and fdisk sees it. Even after closing and opening Disk Utility, it still shows only free space. If I click "Safe Removal" and physically unplug and replug the USB drive, Disk Utility will then see the partition. Why do I need to remove and re-insert the drive for Disk Utility to see the partitions on it? Can I force Disk Utility to update its information without needing to do this? (using Disk Utility 3.0.2 under Ubuntu 11.10.)

  Many years ago I wrote article SQL SERVER – Get a List of Fixed Hard Drive and Free Space on Server where I demonstrated using undocumented Stored Procedure to find the drive letter in local system and available free space. I received question in email from reader asking if there any way he can list directory structure within the T-SQL. When I inquired more he suggested that he needs this because he wanted set up backup of the data in certain structure. Well, there is one undocumented stored procedure exists which can do the same. However, please be vary to use any undocumented procedures. xp_dirtree 'C:\Windows' Execution of the above stored procedure will give following result. If you prefer you can insert the data in the temptable and use the same for further use. Here is the quick script which will insert the data into the temptable and retrieve from the same.   Once upon at time there was the free SGE from Sun. tricky to install and configure, but functional and free. Now we've got: open source packages on Ubuntu that don't quite work out of the box (details on request). the actual source behind them, with a build process that depends on the c-shell and other obsolescences, available from two competing locations. a commercial packaging from Oracle a commercial package from Univa What I am really wishing for is something with the basic capabilities of this that is simple to install and maintain. Heck, I'd take a front-end to hadoop that just queues and distributes simple shell-script-defined jobs.

• What are good replacements for Microsoft Visio 2003?

  I have been using Visio 2003 on Windows XP for generation of UML diagrams. I have encountered following problems so far: There is no way to generate/print the documentation written for class attributes/methods. No automatic code generation is supported I have already generated lot of diagrams and i discovered above problems at much later stage. Now i would like to overcome above by choosing another tool which is compatible with Visio file(.vsd) which saves time or redrawing all diagrams and also provides above features. Could you kindly suggest an alternative (visio compatible) tool ? (I have looked at a similar SU-question, but it does not suggest tools which provide solution to above problems. I am open to free as well as licensed tools, with priority to free :) ) Thanks, James

• F5 BigIP upgrade from 9.x to 10.x

  Having a few difficulties upgrading a Big IP 3400 from 9.4.8 to any version 10.x image. The following are the versions I've tried: 10.1.0.3341.0 10.2.2.763.3 10.2.3.112.0 10.2.4.577.0 To upgrade I'm running the following command: image2disk --format=volumes BIGIP-10.1.0.3341.0.iso Obviously replacing the version number with the relevant image I'm trying to upgrade to each time. The F5 reboots, and starts copying packages however after 30 seconds or so just stops copying. The cursor in the console is still flashing but no matter how long it's left, the package doesn't copy. It seems to be a different package with each version/image (but always the same package per version) at point of freezing, which I'm guessing is suggesting a space issue? I've checked free space on the device and it has over 2GB free at root which should surely be enough? If anyone has any advice or pointers, it would be kindly appreciated. Thank you

  Due to our user's increasing expertise at downloading virus and the like, we are investigating adding Antivirus to our Squid proxy. A casual Google reveals several free and one paid: HAVP squid-vscan Viralator Safe Squid (commercial) None of the 'free' ones have reached v1 yet, nor do any inspire huge confidence form their websites (although of course I would rather they spent their time on the app rather than their website!). Does anybody have experience with any of these (or any other similar apps). If so are they suitable for a production network with 400ish concurrent users, and what sort of CPU/RAM requirements does it have?

  On Windows I use the PSPad editor which has a nice ALT-D timestamp which you can edit the format of, e.g. yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss. When working outside an editor, e.g. Google Docs, I have Autohotkey which I have programmed CTRL-D to insert a yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss timestamp. I am now working on a Mac mostly using TextWrangler as my editor but I can't find a timestamp hotkey in its features. What is the easiest way to get a yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss hotkey on Mac, either in a (free) text editor or a (free) autohotkey equivalent?

The scenario is as follows: For location public (employee plugging in his laptop in hotel, public wi-fi,etc) all inbound connections are restricted, only outbound VPN + www is enabled. Employee then initiates a VPN connection, VPN pushes routes to 10.0.0.0/8 subnet Now I would like to have lax security rules for traffic from/to 10.0.0.0/8 that comes through the VPN interface, while still protecting the laptop from traffic that comes via uplink interface as if it was private. How to achieve this switching and duality? One option I see is switching to IPSec...

  Hi, I have a windows server 2003 where I have to create a MAPI profile to read incoming emails of exchange 2007, using a custom utility. So I want the mail icon to appear in the control panel to configure e-mail accounts. I googled a lot and seems that there was a way to do it with an utility called newprof.exe but it is no longer available: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306962 I don't have an outlook license so I need a free way to create MAPI profiles in this server, either installing a free client or some ms tool. • How do I choose a package format for Linux software distribution?

  We have a Java-based application that, to date, we've been distributing as a tarball with instructions for deploying. It's mostly self-contained so deployment is fairly straight-forward: Untar on the disk you'd like it to live on; Make sure Java is in your path and a suitable distro and version; Verify ownership and group on all the files Start up the server processes with our start script If the user wants to get in to start-on-boot stuff with SysV we have some written instructions and a template init file for it in our tarball. We'd like to make this installation process a little more seamless; take care of the permissions and the init script deployment. We're also going to start bundling our own JRE with the application so that we're mostly free of external dependencies. The question we're faced with now is: how do we pick a package format for distribution? Is RPM the standard? Can all package management tools deal with it now? Our clients primarily run RHEL and CentOS, but we do have some using SuSE and even Debian. If we can pick a distro-agnostic format we'd prefer that. What about a self-extracting shell script? Something akin to how Java is distributed. If we're dependency-free would the self-extracting script be sufficient? What features or conveniences would we lose out on going with the script versus a proper package format meant for use by a package manager?

  From Canonical: Landscape is an easy-to-use systems management and monitoring service that enables you to manage multiple Ubuntu machines as easily as one through a simple Web-based interface. However, Landscape is not free. The RedHat counterpart Satellite has a free version called Spacewalk, but it doesn't work on Ubuntu. (There is an attempt to port Spacewalk to Debian, but it doesn't look like it's stable yet.) Are there any open source alternative to Landscape? Better yet, are there any Spacewalk-like software that works for both RedHat-based and Debian-based systems?

After you complete these steps, a new folder is created in your Dropbox at Apps\SonicAgile. All of your SonicAgile files are stored here. Uploading Files to SonicAgile After your SonicAgile project is connected to Dropbox, a new Files tab appears for every story. You can upload files under the Files tab by clicking the upload file link. When files are uploaded, the files are stored on your Dropbox under the Apps\SonicAgile folder.   Having spelling mistakes on a website degrades customer experience by many times. Developers and website content creators spend good amount of time in going through the content manually to make sure that there are no spelling mistakes. At times few mistakes slip in as manual process is error prone. There are few web services and tool available in the market which provide automated spell checking services but they have certain limitations like – high fees to use the service, limitation on the number of pages they scan for errors, privacy issues, etc. What about a free tool that runs locally on your PC and spell checks unlimited web pages? Here comes Spell Checker extension for  Firefox web browser. This free Firefox extension is developed by  Gaurang, a Software Test Engineer based out in India. Once the extension is installed it adds a new context menu “Check Spelling” and a small icon to Add-On bar. To check spellings of a web page just click on the icon or the context menu and it will highlight all the errors on the page.
