• Moving webshop storage to NoSQL solution

  If you had a webshop solution based on SQL Server relational DB what would be the reasons, if any, to move to NoSQL storage ? Does it even make sense to migrate datastores that rely on relations heavily to NoSQL? If starting from scratch, would you choose NoSQL solution over relational one for a webshop project, which will, after a while, again end up with a bunch of tables like Articles, Classifications, TaxRates, Pricelists etc. and a magnitude of relations between them? What's the support like in .NET (4.0) for MongoDB or MongoDB's support for .NET 4.0? Can I count on rich code generation tools similar to EF wizard, L2SQL wizard etc. for MongoDB? Because as what I have read so far, NoSQL's are mostly suited for document storage, simpler object models. Your answer to this question will help me make the right infrastructure design decisions.

• Getting back the old alt-tab windows switching behavior in Windows 7?

  When you run more than 6 applications on Windows 7 and you press alt-TAB, icons representing the first 6 applications and the desktop appear on the first row of the grid and you can cycle with alt-TAB-TAB... through the 6 most recently used windows the usual way, but the 7th and other less recently used windows don't follow the same rules. Instead they get grouped together according to their application but disregarding whether they were recently used or not. This new behavior is mentioned here. I am very used to the old way of cycling and the new system is driving me crazy. I tend to have 20 or so windows open at one time and I frequently need to alt-tab to the 7th or 8th window on the stack but it doesn't work the same anymore. Does anyone know how to put back the old behavior, so that alt-tab-tab-tab... goes through the whole list in most-recent to least-recent order?

• type mismatch errors querying data from spreadsheet

  In EXCEL 2010 I am trying to querying data in another spreadsheet. The data range in the source sheet/ file is named (DATABASE). The Date field in the database is formatted as short date and when I query the date without criteria I get a different format of European datesYYYY-MM-DD with time in the results. When I use criteria and a specific date in the date field criteria grid using English format MM-DD-YYYY I get results. When I set parameters looking at destination file cells for the date for the parameters, I get Type mismatch EVEN THOUGHT THE CELLS ARE Short date Formatted. This worked perfectly in my 2003 version of EXCEL. Now I am running Win 7 -64 and Office 2010 Pro. Why does the query throw Mismatch with cell references for the parameters but accepts hard value dates in any date format? (MSQRY32.EXE)

• Copy/Pasting data from SQL Server to Excel splits up text into multiple columns?

  I've got a problem pasting data from the result grid of SQL Server 2005 to an excel 2007 spreadsheet. I have a query in SQL Server that returns 2 columns (a number column and a text column) On one computer here i can happily copy (right-click copy) and then just right-click and paste into an excel spreadsheet. no problem. On another computer here when i try and paste into excel it splits the text column up and pastes the text into multiple columns based on spaces between words. For example if one of the rows has... Paste me please ...in it then when pasting into excel it splits the text and pastes each work into a seperate column within excel. We've tried comparing options in both SQL Server & excel with the computer it works fine on but can see no differences. Any ideas welcome Thanks

• Active MQ showing more than one (ghost) consumer

  We have a system that uses ActiveMQ (Queues) - and have exactly one producer and one consumer (implemented as a Windows Service in .NET). Over the weekend, the infrastructure team had a reboot of the servers on the network, and from then on we noticed that there are more than one ghost consumer appearing that listens to the queue and we also suspect reads and deletes the messages. My questions are: is there any way from the Active MQ management console to find out what the consumers are (hostnames, etc). and Are there any scenarios in which inadvertent consumers get 'created'? For instance, there were suggestions about the active MQ journal folders getting corrupted after a reboot, or there is another suggestion that another machine with Active MQ broker automatically makes itself a consumer of all the queues on the main/live active mq server.

• Advantage Database Replication

  I have a client that wants two sites to have the ability to sync databases so information at Site A can be synced with Site B so the two sites can look at the same data. I'm not even sure of the infrastructure required. Would a VPN required to connect the 2 databases or would an internet based database work ie/Site A to InternetDatabase and Site B to InternetDatabase. Each site copies data to it periodically and then the InternetDatabase syncs it and the Sites can then pull data down. My other thought was something like Dropbox. If Site A and Site B use a Dropbox account to sync the ADT files etc can the database at each site then sync with those ADT files? Thanks

• New thread per client connection in socket server?

  I am trying to optimize multiple connections per time to a TCP socket server. Is it considered good practice, or even rational to initiate a new thread in the listening server every time I receive a connection request? At what time should I begin to worry about a server based on this infrastructure? What is the maximum no of background threads I can work, until it doesn't make any sense anymore? Platform is C#, framework is Mono, target OS is CentOS, RAM is 2.4G, server is on the clouds, and I'm expecting about 200 connection requests per second.

  I am looking for examples of code/data/infrastructure design for a dashboard-style webapp. I am designing an interface for staff and faculty at a university to access departmental resources and be alerted of cyclical processes, events, deadlines, etc. Technologies I am working with: apache tomcat 6 and a mySQL database, JSP (including JSTL), bootstrap 3, and javascript/jquery. I have basic experience most of these technologies building smaller web apps but was hoping someone could direct me towards a book or other resource that discusses how to design the db architecture (and maybe how to template) for a dashboard, esp. for something like a notification systems. Any suggestions?

  Many js files are included into Scripts folder by default in ASP.NET MVC 2 Projects. I suppose developers use jquery library nearly every time they program a site, but what about other files? Please, can you tell scenarios and reasons when you: Use Microsoft.Ajax instead of jquery or mix both libraries? Do you use JQuery validation infrastructure instead of asp.net mvc one, or combine them both? Thank you in advance! P.S. there are also diferrent editions of the same file. • Can an appdomain in C# be restricted to one directory?

  I am developing a plugin host. The plugins should have as little trust as they need, however I want to have the possibility for a plugin to read and write files. Can the AppDomain where the assembly will be loaded be restricted to have access to only one directory for reading and writing? Other options and ways to go about this are also appreciated like for example easy ways to stream file data from the host to the plugin (reading) and from the plugin to the host (writing).   Based on the following example URL structure: mysite.com/mypage.aspx?a=red&b=green&c=blue Pages in the application use ASP.net user controls and some of these controls build a query string. To prevent duplicate keys being created e.g. &pid=12&pid=10, I am researching methods of rewriting the URL: a) mysite.com/mypage.aspx/red/green/blue b) mysite.com/mypage.aspx?controlname=a,red|b,green|c,blue Pages using this structure would be publishing content that I would like to get indexed and ranked - articles and products (8,000 products to start, with thousands more being added later) My gut instinct tells me to go with the first method, but would it would be overkill to add all that infrastructure if the second method will accomplish my goal of getting pages indexed AND ranked. So my question, looking at the pro's and con's, Google Ranking, time to implement etc. which method should I use? Thanks!

  We've had some good experiences building an app on Google App Engine, this first app's target audience are Google Apps users, so no issues there in terms of it being hosted on Google infrastructure. We like it so much that we would like to investigate using it for a another app, however this next project is for a client who is not really that interested in what technology it sits on, they just want it to work, and work all of the time. In this scenario, given that we have the technology applicability and capability side covered, are there any concerns that this stuff is still relatively new and that we may not be as much "in control" as if we had it done with traditional hosting?

• Django Project Done and Working. Now What?

  Hi, I just finished what I would call a small django project and pretty soon it's going live. It's only 6 models but a fairly complex view layer and a lot of records saving and retrieving. Of course, forgetting the obvious huge amount of bugs that will, probably, fill my inbox to the top, what would it be the next step towards a website with best performance. What could be tweaked? I'm using jmeter a lot recently and feel confident that I have a good baseline for future performance comparisons, but the thing is: I'm not sure what is the best start, since I'm a greedy bastard that wants to work the least possible and gather the best results. For instance, should I try an approach towards infrastructure, like a distributed database, or should I go with the code itself and in that case, is there something that specifically results in better performance? In your experience, whats pays off more? Personal anecdotes are welcome, but some fact based opinions are even more. :) Thanks very much.

• Delegate Method only Firing after 5 or so Button Presses?

  I'm having the most bizarre problem which I'm not even close to figuring out. I have a button which fires a delegate method. Once upon a time it was working fine, but after making some changes to my code, now the delegate method only fires after I push the button x amount of times (the changes I made to the code had nothing to do with the infrastructure that connects the delegate together). It varies, it can be 5 times to 10 times. I used the analyzer to check for memory leaks and there aren't any. There is too much code for me to paste here (I don't even know where to start or where the problem could be), but I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this problem before, or what could be causing it? This is very odd and have no clue what could be causing it.

• 500 Metro Style WP7 Icons

  I was inspired by The Noun Project, a project that offers up “Metro-style” icons in SVG format. The project is licensed under a public domain license and while it’s a great project, all of the content is in SVG format. Jon Galloway has a great post (from 2007) talking about the differences between SVG and XAML so I highly recommend that for some background. I thought it would be helpful to the WPF/Windows Phone 7/Silverlight community to provide the content in alternative formats for use in your applications. The Goods I’ve put together a package of the 500 icons (502 actually) in PNG, XAML and the original SVG format along with a couple of sample projects so you can see them in action. There’s a WPF desktop app: And a Windows Phone 7 app: Building It To get all the content first I wrote up a quick program to suck the original SVG files. Luckily they’re all in a common path just named 1.SVG, 2.SVG, and so on. Easy sleazy to grab the contents. Once I had 500 SVG files I used the latest copy of XamlTune, an open source CodePlex project that has a command line conversion tool to convert the directory of SVG files into XAML (the tool also created a PNG file of each SVG so that’s just icing on the cake). Conversions The conversion from SVG to XAML isn’t 100%. While you can just drop the content into a WPF app, it doesn’t work that way for WP7. There are just some small adjustments I made to each format so you’ll have to do the same. Follow the information below or refer to the sample applications. Note that while it does show up in the app (on the emulator or device) it wouldn’t show up in Visual Studio for me. Maybe some XAML guru out there can tell me why. You can just as easily use the PNG files in WP7 but if you want the crispness of vector graphics, go for the XAML version. Of course with XamlTune being open source you could always modify the output of that program to cater it to your app. If you do make a change that’s worthy please consider submitting a patch to the project so everyone can benefit. • Steve Jobs Proposes New Apple Campus.It’s As Beautiful As An iPad.

  After the launch of iOS 5, OS X Lion and iCloud Steve Jobs proposed Apple’s plans for construction of a new campus in Cupertino. In a presentation to Cupertino City Council, Steve proposed to construct a spaceship style beautiful building that can house 12000 employees. Apple recently purchased 150 acres of land from HP and others in Cupertino and this land will be used for their new campus. The architectural design of the new campus looks awesome just like their products: iPad / iPhone.It’s a four storied circular building with all curved glasses that can accommodate 12000 employees.,  “We do have a shot at building the best office building in the world,” Jobs told the Council members, “Architecture students will come here to see this.”. The facility is going to be eco-friendly with 80% of landscaping with most of the parking going to underground. The current campus has 3700 trees and Apple is planning to increase them to 6000 trees. The campus will be powered with its own renewable energy source and electric grid as backup. Steve described It’s a pretty amazing building. It’s a little like a spaceship landed. It’s got this gorgeous courtyard in the middle… It’s a circle. It’s curved all the way around.   Tomorrow (Friday 23/4/2010) I am delivering a session at the Cloud Grid Exchange in London at SkillsMatter (A top training company and superb supporter of development communities). To be perfectly honest – I’m more interested in attending than presenting as the sessions and speaker line up look great. But in the middle of all that I will be doing the following (rather cheekily named) session: Looking at the Clouds through dirty Windows Many developers assume that the Microsoft Windows Azure Platform for Cloud Computing is only relevant if you develop solutions using Microsoft Visual Studio and the .NET Framework. The reality is somewhat different. In the same way that developers can build great applications on Windows Server using a variety of programming languages, developers can do the same for Azure. Java, Tomcat, PHP, Ruby, Python, MySQL and more all work great on Azure. In this session we will take a lap around the services offered by the Azure PaaS and demonstrate just how easy it is to build and deploy applications built in .NET and other technologies.
