• How can I use the Band Pass Filter in GarageBand?

  What I want to do: I have a music WAV file and want to put a Band Pass Filter over it, to filter out anoying high frequencies. I was reading on the net that there is a "AuBandPass" plugin in Mac OS X. I just can't figure out how I could use that in GarageBand. I don't even find the effects at all. I created a new GarageBand file and dropped the WAV file in there. Now I can play that song in GarageBand. What must I do next?

  I want to built a virtualised Server Environment using XEN or KVM. The virtual machines should be purely debian systems - so XEN or KVM should be a sane choice. Now while buying servers, I am confronted with the fact, that the vendors obviously only support commercial solution. I think, on a good server, one should be able to install uncommercial software as well - but of course sometimes systems have hardware, that requires drivers, that are not found in the OS Community. So I am asked the question: Is it straight-forward to use Debian with IBM Server System x3650 M4 791562G with Debian - or even virtualising the IBM Server System x3650 M4 791562G using XEN or KVM. I am sure there will always be a way to achieve this goal - but this way might have a high milage - so I am not asking, whether this is theoretical possible, but whether this should be straight-forward and practically easy to do, no major headaches to be expected.

• Advice for an EC2 Architecture and Deployment Strategy

  My company is currently migrating several websites and PHP web applications (standard LAMP stack) from three in-house servers to Amazon EC2. Because we had only three servers, we clustered several low-traffic websites with perhaps one high-traffic web application, and served them from the same server. The server admin has pretty much copied the previous architecture wholesale onto the EC2 instances, simply upping the instance size to account for the highest traffic client that occupies that particular instance. This architecture might be okay if it wasn't for deployment. Any time one of these sites/apps changes, it means redeploying the entire instance, along with the 30 sites/apps it hosts, instead of just updating one. How can we architect our cloud in a more modular fashion? Should each app get its own appropriately-sized instance? What is the best strategy for deployment in this type of situation?

• Dynamically changing one-node Cassandra cluster to two nodes

  So I have an application that will be very dormant most of the time but will need high-bursting a few days out of the month. Since we are deploying on EC2 I would like to keep only one Cassandra server up most of the time and then on burst days I want to bring one more server up (with more RAM and CPU than the first) to help serve the load. What is the best way to do this? Should I take a different approach? Some notes about what I plan to do: Bring the node up and repair it immediately After the burst time is over decommission the powerful node Use the always-on server as the seed node My main question is how to get the nodes to share all the data since I want a replication factor of 2 (so both nodes have all the data) but that won't work while there is only one server. Should I bring up 2 extra servers instead of just one?

  Our MySQL server has been using a lot of CPU lately (it's reached 100% several times and stays there for a while) and I noticed that it the CPU load is all on one core of one cpu. I was hoping to spread that out to all 4 on my server. I have been tweaking the MySQL settings to use more ram and less cpu, but it still occasionally reaches very high CPU usage. It seems like everything about the topic refers to thread_concurrency (which I've read is a solaris only setting). What can I do in Linux? Thanks.

  I have a drupal-based website on a VPS with 1GB RAM and 1Ghz processor share. The webserver is nginx along with php-fastcgi. Currently I am using 10 nginx and 13 php-fastcgi processes. The server load is high most of the times while half of the RAM is unused. The CPU usage rarely reaches 80%. I have tried some other combinations of nginx/php-fastcgi but am not sure what is the optimal combination because I am quite ignorant about what's going on below the surface. So I appreciate if you could share your experience or give me some clues.

Some constraints: my ISP now provides 120 Mbit bandwidth - the router must be able to handle it I have 3 computers and a laptop at home - the router must have at least 4 LAN ports and the WAN port I need to be able to do the following in parallel: use bittorrent with ~1000 connections transfer files from one home computer to another at high speed access one home computer from my workplace I don't really need wireless I don't really want two boxes to serve all these purposes. So I was searching for a router with 1 Gbit ports, jumbo frame support and good reviews, but haven't really found a promising candidate so far. Any suggestions?

• Any ramifications to disabling ClearPageFile

  I am runing a Dell XPS 15z with a quad core I7, 8gb ram, 7200rpm hdd, windows 7 ultimate. My laptop was taking around 3 minutes to shut down, which seemed far too high to me. I did a bit of investigation, and it seemed that the ClearPageFile reg entry was set to 1, meaning that upon shutdown my pagefile.sys was being cleared before actually shutting the machine down. When I disable this setting, my laptop shuts down in about 20 seconds - clearly a big gain. My question is, are there any side effects of having this turned off (other than the security risk of the HDD being stolen, and still having any important info that was in the RAM up for grabs)?

• Windows 7 unreasonable ram usage

  I have a fresh install of windows 7, and my ram in normal startup goes up to 2.5 GB. I looked at task manager, and there's at least 1.5 GB missing from there and in resource monitor as well. No indication of what's using that ram. Can someone tell me how I can find out what's consuming my memory? I believe it's a virus but none of the free antivirus programs tracked it down. EDIT I added the pictures bellow. If this is normal usage of windows 7 as some answers imply... then I don't get this at all. P.S My windows 8 Installation was running bellow 2.5 gb actually it was 1. something, until recently that I transferred some files from another computer which had the same problem that mine has now. I deleted windows 8 and installed 7, since i would do that anyway. And now I'm getting high memory usage in windows 7 as well.

  On my gaming desktop, I was fixing my desktop's power supply when something seemed to burn (I got that stinging burning smell). However when I turned ON the computer (it was OFF before), everything seemed to be fine. However, I have noticed that now it becomes too slow if I play a game or movie on it. I am talking about the computer becoming painfully slow after about 5 minutes into the movie/game (it works fine otherwise e.g. browsing), it becomes so slow I can see individual frames from movies/games. What could be the problem? A fried video card? friend memory (RAM), something else?   I have an unused Comcast high-speed internet self-install kit from 2006. It has two coils of extension cable, and a splitter, and some screws. The name of the cable is "extension cable" printed on the package. I wonder if that is its actual name? As ethernet cables are always useful, I wonder if the extension cables are totally worthless and should be tossed into a trash can? Or are they usable for some other purposes, or even sellable? • How to make my display Grayscale?

  I want to reduce the saturation of my laptop monitor to the point that it is almost grayscale. That's the goal. Intel and Asus don't have an answer. Asus Splendid and the intel graphics control panel can increase the saturation, but not lower it. I would prefer a software solution, although I DIY'ed a vga grayscale adapter for my desktop. I have an Asus UL30A with an Intel GMA 4500MHD. I know that the latest ATI cards, windotosh's and high end nvidia cards all support control panel desaturation. Why? black and white makes me 3 times more productive.

• Specific apache + mysql settings for a light-weight site

  I have a small website with a Joomla and a Moodle set up. It seems that both of these are very slow. The server (CentOS release 5.5 (Final)) is a virtual dedicated server with about 2GB of ram. I don't expect to ever get more than 10-15 people on at the same time (and if that is high) What settings could I change in either apache, mysql, or even the OS to increase the performance of my site?   So about a week ago, I finally figured out what was causing my server to continually crash. After reviewing my mysqld.log I keep seeing this same error, 101210 5:04:32 [Warning] option 'max_join_size': unsigned value 18446744073709551615 adjusted to 4294967295 Here is a link to the bug report, http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=35346 someone recommend that you set the max_join_size vaule in my.cnf to 4M, and I did. I assumed this fixed the issue, and it was working for about a week with no issues until today...   I would like to build a file server for my home network using Ubuntu. It will serve files from RAID1 configured disks, either in the OS or in hardware. It will be connected to a Gigabit ethernet LAN. The disks will use an encrypted file system. It will serve samba shares. I would like a recommendation on what kind of processing power/memory I would need to build a box that would be able to sustain the full capacity of the Gigabit ethernet connection in a file transfer for a single connection with the overhead of serving from an encrypted disk. I'm not looking to build a dream server, I just want enough processing capacity for high performance (and reliable) file sharing and spend as little as possible for it. This may be tangential, but what kind of hardware would I need to have a server be able to reliably go into a low power mode when no requests are being made of it?

• If a SQL Server Replication Distributor and Subscriber are on the same server, should a PUSH or PULL subsciption be used?

  Thanks in advance for any help. I'm setting up a new Microsoft SQL Server replication and I have the Distributor and Subscriber running on the same server. The Publisher is on a remote server (as it is a production database and MS recommends that for high volumes, the Distributor should be remote). I don't know much about the inner workings of PUSH vs PULL subscriptions, but my gut tells me that a PUSH subscription would be less resource intensive because (1) the Distributor is already remote, so this shouldn't negatively effect the Publisher and (2) pushing the transactions from the Distributor to the Subscriber is more efficient than the Subscriber polling the Distribution database. Does any one have any resources or insight into PUSH vs PULL which would recommend one over the other? Is there really going to be that big of a difference in performance / reliability / security?

  There are quite number of software running on my server: httpd, varnish, mysql, memcache, java.. Each of them is using a part of the virtual memory and varnish was configured to be allocated 3GB of memory to run. Due to high traffic load which is 100K, our server ran out of memory and oom-killer is invoked. We've to reboot the server. We have 8GB of Virtual Memory and due to some reason we cannot extend to larger memory. My question is - Is there any automated script, which will monitor how much virtual memory left and based upon certain criteria, lets say if 500MB left than restart the server automatically? I do know this is not the proper solution but we have to do it, otherwise we don't know when server will get OOM and by the time we know and restart the server, we lost our visiting users.

• 100% CPU in QuickTime H.264 decoder on Windows on Win7, except when using XP compat. mode

  I have a Windows program that uses the Apple QuickTime API to play video. On Windows 7, CPU usage is 100% on one core, which I believe is why the playback is choppy. If I turn on XP compatibility mode for this program, the CPU usage is around 20% of one core, and playback is normal. Using a profiling tool called Very Sleepy (http://www.codersnotes.com/sleepy), I was able to narrow down the high CPU usage to a function in the QuickTime H.264 decoder called JVTCompComponentDispatch. I can't imagine why there would be a difference in CPU usage when XP compatibility mode is turned off or on. Any ideas?

• How to get a windows domain server to recognize a linux machine by its name?

  In my company I ran into an issue where we have a linux machine that serves up a Subversion repository. Its hooked up via LDAP to the Active Directory. We got an account setup for an application and they set the Limited Workstations up so it didn't have full access to the network. The problem is that even though the hostname for our machine resolves correctly for me, the credentials for the application account seem to come back as not being allowed based on the name (the error was related to authorized workstations). I don't have access to any of the domain servers but it might be helpful to come at the management or high-level techs with some ideas, they don't seem to have a solution besides allowing all workstations for the user. Does anyone have any idea on how to get my linux machine to properly identify itself with the Domain machine by name?
