• How can web form content be preserved for the back button

  When a web form is submitted and takes the user to another page, it is quite often the case that the user will click the Back button in order to submit the form again (the form is an advanced search in my case.) How can I reliably preserve the form options selected by the user when they click Back (so they don't have to start from scratch with filling the form in again if they are only changing one of many form elements?) Do I have to go down the route of storing the form options in session data (cookies or server-side) or is there a way to get the browser to handle this for me? (Environment is PHP/JavaScript - and the site must work on IE6+ and Firefox2+)

• is JsonP working with Opera, Chrome & Safari ?

  Hi, On a web site that I am building , when you log in (because the database is on an other server), I use json padding to check if the user as the right credentials.   I am part of an organization in which there is contention amongst some very competent folks as to whether or not testing cross-browser behavior for JavaScript applications on virtual machines (for IE6/7/8, FF2/3, Chrome on XP/Vista/7) is reliable. This is using VMWare server on a Linux box host. While the discrepancies seen are few, there are cases in which it has proven difficult to tell if it is a product of virtualization or just different machine configurations. My question to the community is, what is people experience with this? Is there any credence to the claim that VM pose inconsistencies, or are they generally spot-on reliable? Can we trust them?

• Show javascript execution progress

  I have some javascript functions that take about 1 to 3 seconds. (some loops or mooML templating code.) During this time, the browser is just frozen. I tried showing a "loading" animation (gif image) before starting the operation and hiding it afterwords. but it just doesnt work. The browser freezes before it could render the image and hides it immediately when the function ends. Is there anything I can do to tell the browser to update the screen before going into javascript execution., Something like Application.DoEvents or background worker threads. So any comments/suggestions about how to show javascript execution progress. My primary target browser is IE6, but should also work on all latest browsers

• Techniques for Visualizing Data

  I'm looking into providing several methods of visualizing a large volume of data. This may include, but will not be limited to, simple graphing. The techniques I'm exploring will involve shapes, text and lines. It will also involve interaction with elements (hiding, focusing, etc.) and animation (shifting, dragging, systematic reorganizing, etc.) of those elements. SVG or Canvas seem like the obvious choices (in conjunction with a JS library--probably jQuery), but the lack of cross-browser availability is a concern. I'd prefer to avoid Flash/Flex, but right now it's the only rock solid, cross-browser technology I've found if support for IE7/8 is a requirement. Does anyone have any other suggestions or any additional information that would make a technology I've listed seem even more appealing? Thanks.

• PHP + GD: imagetruecolortopalette not keeping transparency

  I am using GD to output an image that is a truecolor+alpha channel PNG file using imagepng just fine. However, I would like to have the ability to also output an ie6-compatible 256-color PNG as well. According to the official documentation for imagetruecolortopalette: The code has been modified to preserve as much alpha channel information as possible in the resulting palette, in addition to preserving colors as well as possible. However, I am finding that the results of this function do not properly preserve any transparency at all. I used this firefox image with text superimposed on top of it as a test, and all the function did was give me a white background and a weird dark blue border. I know that I can't hope to preserve the full alpha channel, but surely this function would at least pick up on the transparent background. Is there something I'm missing? Are there any alternative approaches that I can take?

  Consider the following (applies to all IE6+ browsers -- including IE8): <div id="picture"> <div class="thumb" style="position: relative;"><img .. /></div> <p>Some description</p> </div> When I animate the opacity down to 0 it only works if I change the .thumb class to position: static. This has bigger problems because I use that to constrain absolutely positioned children to that container. I've tried all the hacks I have discovered, none work (bg-color, zoom, etc).   I am trying to create an application to print documents over the web. I have created my document, and made a web page with a meta refresh tag, along the lines of this: <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="3;http://example.com/download.epl2" /> I specify that the document has a content-type of application/x-epl2, and I have associated .epl2 files on my computer with a program that silently sends them to the printer. I have put the website into my trusted sites zone. Currently Internet Explorer pops up the "Open, Save, Cancel" dialog box with no option to automatically open the file. Is there a setting in IE6/7/8 that I can use to have IE just open the file without prompting?

• internet explorer 7 iframe unloads when going back

  Hi this is my first post here, so please be kind ;-) i'm implementing a browser history manager, just like rsh or yui browser history manager. The idea was not to constantly poll the url hash of a hidden iframe, but to capture the onscroll event of an iframe, when it scrolls to an anchor name on an urlhashchange. So on every click i add an new anchor to iframe and set the iframe's hash to the anchors name. When pressing the back or forward button the frame scrolls to the previous or next anchor and the onscroll event is fired. That works great on firefox 3.0+, IE6 and Opera but on IE7 when hiting the back button the frame unloads and loses all its anchors. • How to set the default page for a .CHM file in HTML Help Workshop?

  When I open the help (.chm) application, I could see table of contents. By default, the first entry in the file is selected, however I couldn't see the corresponding page data. Instead, I see "This program cannot display the web page" (the default error message that comes in IE7).The page is displayed only when I click on any of the contents on the left side. Is there a way of showing the page by default without clicking on the entry? The following code is the .hhp file.   fontsquirrel.com allows you to upload a font and create a @font-face kit which you can apply to your website and use to display fonts which will display cross-browser (even in IE6!). But what I want to know is, is this legal? I've been supplied the font "Lubalin Graph Std" and told to use this for headers on the website I'm creating. I can upload the font file to fontsquirrel.com and use this to display headers in this font across the website - but I'm worried we'll get into trouble for doing this. What should I do?

• External Javascript Timeout

  I have a number of tracking scripts and web services installed on my website and I noticed when one of the services goes down, it still tries to call the external javascript file hosted on a different server. In Firefox, Chrome and other new browsers, there doesn't seem to be any issues when one of the services go down. However, in IE7 and IE8, my pages don't load all the way and time out before everything is displayed. Is there any way to add a time out on these javascript calls to prevent them from breaking my pages when they go down?

On first invocation of a URL the user is prompted with the typical https browser "security alert" popup, on selecting "Yes" the display of the PDF fails. • Vista not supporting trueSpeech!

  My web application has (server side) a wav file saved using truespeech and then a client (ie6, ie7) can ask to plat the file and the web server serves it.. All you need on xp is to have WMP 9 or higher and it all works. but on vista.. suddenly the vista client box can't play the file cause it doesn't support truespeech (some upgrade!) anyone has an idea of what should I do? You can suggest a way to make it work on the client (but in general, I don't like having to say that the solution includes installing anything on the client box) you can suggest I don't save the server side file in truespeech, and instead use something else (what?)

• How do I pass custom variables to javascript events?

  I have a user control with a javascript function which references some controls within the user control. This user control works perfectly when there is only one instance of it, but I'm now building a page where I have two instances of the user control. In IE7, it works fine, but in FireFox, it is getting confused that there is two functions of the exact same name and signature. So on UserControl1, it'll be running the function in UserControl2 and modifying that content. I'm thinking my best solution would be to pass the clientID of the components I need TO the function instead of just directly referencing it in the function. How would I do that? • Strange centering problem in Firefox and IE8

  The navigation bar on my site http://hungryathome.net doesn't center properly on Firefox and IE8 Standards mode. It centers properly in IE7 Compatability mode and in Chrome. What's odd is that setting a Margin on the div (id="navlinks") to 4px or more will make it center properly. Any less will result in it being slightly off-center. I changed the values back and forth in Firebug and it's confusing the heck out of me. Any explanation for why that's happening?

  Hello According to RFC, in multipart/form-data content-disposition header filename field receives as parameter HTTP quoted string - string between quites where character '\' can escape any other ascii character. Problem web browsers don't do it. IE6 sends: Content-Disposition: form-data; name="file"; filename="z:\tmp\test.txt" Instead of expected Content-Disposition: form-data; name="file"; filename="z:\\tmp\\test.txt" Which should be parsed as z:tmptest.txt according to rules instead of z:\tmp\test.txt. Firefox, Konqueror and Chrome don't escape " characters for example: Content-Disposition: form-data; name="file"; filename=""test".txt" Instead of expected Content-Disposition: form-data; name="file"; filename="\"test\".txt" So... how would you suggest to deal with this issue?

  Hello! This is a simple question, but I didn´t found any documentation about this. When an applet makes a request, how is the user agent of the request. I want to know the applet user-agent expression to detect if a request comes from an applet. I make two test, with IE7 and Firefox 3.0.5 with JDK 1.6.0_03 and the user agent was "Mozilla/4.0 (Windows 2003 5.2) Java/1.6.0_03" in both, but I can´t generalize from two test.
