• Can grub handle same release (3.6) but new rc (rc5)?

  can grub handle newer kerner rc ? I am running 3.6.0-rc4 ok, grub update definitely recognizes all required files for rc5, but edit of grub.cfg only shows rc4 after grub-update. D/N matter whether I generate kernel 3.6.0-rc5 or whether I install the .deb files. • Different Not Automatically Implies Better

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/akraus1/archive/2013/11/05/154556.aspxRecently I was digging deeper why some WCF hosted workflow application did consume quite a lot of memory although it did basically only load a xaml workflow. The first tool of choice is Process Explorer or even better Process Hacker (has more options and the best feature copy&paste does work). The three most important numbers of a process with regards to memory are Working Set, Private Working Set and Private Bytes. Working set is the currently consumed physical memory (parts can be shared between processes e.g. loaded dlls which are read only) Private Working Set is the physical memory needed by this process which is not shareable Private Bytes is the number of non shareable which is only visible in the current process (e.g. all new, malloc, VirtualAlloc calls do create private bytes) When you have a bigger workflow it can consume under 64 bit easily 500MB for a 1-2 MB xaml file. This does not look very scalable. Under 64 bit the issue is excessive private bytes consumption and not the managed heap. The picture is quite different for 32 bit which looks a bit strange but it seems that the hosted VB compiler is a lot less memory hungry under 32 bit. I did try to repro the issue with a medium sized xaml file (400KB) which does contain 1000 variables and 1000 if which can be represented by C# code like this: string Var1; string Var2; ... string Var1000; if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(Var1) ) { Console.WriteLine(“Var1”); } if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(Var2) ) { Console.WriteLine(“Var2”); } ....   Since WF is based on VB.NET expressions you are bound to the hosted VB.NET compiler which does result in (x64) 140 MB of private bytes which is ca. 140 KB for each if clause which is quite a lot if you think about the actually present functionality. But there is hope. .NET 4.5 does allow now C# expressions for WF which is a major step forward for all C# lovers. I did create some simple patcher to “cross compile” my xaml to C# expressions. Lets look at the result: C# Expressions VB Expressions x86 x86 On my home machine I have only 32 bit which gives you quite exactly half of the memory consumption under 64 bit. C# expressions are 10 times more memory hungry than VB.NET expressions! I wanted to do more with less memory but instead it did consume a magnitude more memory. That is surprising to say the least. The workflow does initialize in about the same time under x64 and x86 where the VB code does it in 2s whereas the C# version needs 18s. Also nearly ten times slower. That is a too high price to pay for any bigger sized xaml workflow to convert from VB.NET to C# expressions. If I do reduce the number of expressions to 500 then it does need 400MB which is about half of the memory. It seems that the cost per if does rise linear with the number of total expressions in a xaml workflow.  Expression Language Cost per IF Startup Time C# 1000 Ifs x64 1,5 MB 18s C# 500 Ifs x64 750 KB 9s VB 1000 Ifs x64 140 KB 2s VB 500 Ifs x64 70 KB 1s Now we can directly compare two MS implementations. It is clear that the VB.NET compiler uses the same underlying structure but it has much higher offset compared to the highly inefficient C# expression compiler. I have filed a connect bug here with a harsher wording about recent advances in memory consumption. The funniest thing is that one MS employee did give an Azure AppFabric demo around early 2011 which was so slow that he needed to investigate with xperf. He was after startup time and the call stacks with regards to VB.NET expression compilation were remarkably similar. In fact I only found this post by googling for parts of my call stacks. … “C# expressions will be coming soon to WF, and that will have different performance characteristics than VB” … What did he know Jan 2011 what I did no know until today? ;-). He knew that C# expression will come but that they will not be automatically have better footprint. It is about time to fix that. In its current state C# expressions are not usable for bigger workflows. That also explains the headline for today. You can cheat startup time by prestarting workflows so that the demo looks nice and snappy but it does hurt scalability a lot since you do need much more memory than necessary. I did find the stacks by enabling virtual allocation tracking within XPerf which is still the best tool out there. But first you need to look at your process to check where the memory is hiding: For the C# Expression compiler you do not need xperf. You can directly dump the managed heap and check with a profiler of your choice. But if the allocations are happening on the Private Data ( VirtualAlloc ) you can find it with xperf. There is a nice video on channel 9 explaining VirtualAlloc tracking it in greater detail. If your data allocations are on the Heap it does mean that the C/C++ runtime did create a heap for you where all malloc, new calls do allocate from it. You can enable heap tracing with xperf and full call stack support as well which is doable via xperf like it is shown also on channel 9. Or you can use WPRUI directly: To make “Heap Usage” it work you need to set for your executable the tracing flags (before you start it). For example devenv.exe HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\devenv.exe DWORD TracingFlags 1 Do not forget to disable it after you did complete profiling the process or it will impact the startup time quite a lot. You can with xperf attach directly to a running process and collect heap allocation information from a gone wild process. Very handy if you need to find out what a process was doing which has arrived in a funny state. “VirtualAlloc usage” does work without explicitly enabling stuff for a specific process and is always on machine wide. I had issues on my Windows 7 machines with the call stack collection and the latest Windows 8.1 Performance Toolkit. I was told that WPA from Windows 8.0 should work fine but I do not want to downgrade.

• Make a lives display in HUD, Flash AS3 (not text!)

  I've been searching the internet all day and I can't find the answer I'm looking for. In my HUD I want to use orange dots to represent lives. The user starts off with 5 lives and every time they die, I want a dot to be removed. Pretty straight forward. So far my idea is to make a movie clip that has the five dots in a line. There would be 5 frames on the timeline (because after the last life it goes to a game over screen right away). I would have a variable set up to store the number of lives and a function to keep track of lives. So every hit of an obstacle would result in livesCounter--;. • Content Box is a Little Off in IE9 ... How to Fix?

  Hi there! I have a website at www.thetotempole.ca and when viewed in IE9... My websites content box (The green wooden backgrounded box with content inside) is moved slightly over to the left making a space between the actual container and the content box... Is there anyway I can fix this without harming any of the other browsers? Thanks! • Use multiple inheritance to discriminate useage roles?

  Hi fellows, it's my flight simulation application again. I am leaving the mere prototyping phase now and start fleshing out the software design now. At least I try.. Each of the aircraft in the simulation have got a flight plan associated to them, the exact nature of which is of no interest for this question. Sufficient to say that the operator way edit the flight plan while the simulation is running. The aircraft model most of the time only needs to read-acess the flight plan object which at first thought calls for simply passing a const reference. But ocassionally the aircraft will need to call AdvanceActiveWayPoint() to indicate a way point has been reached. This will affect the Iterator returned by function ActiveWayPoint(). This implies that the aircraft model indeed needs a non-const reference which in turn would also expose functions like AppendWayPoint() to the aircraft model. I would like to avoid this because I would like to enforce the useage rule described above at compile time. • SQL Query takes about 10 - 20 minutes

  I have a select from (nothing to complex) Select * from VIEW This view has about 6000 records and about 40 columns. It comes from a Lotus Notes SQL database. So my ODBC drive is the LotusNotesSQL driver. The query takes about 30 seconds to execute. The company I worked for used EXCEL to run the query and write everything to the worksheet. Since I am assuming it writes everything cell by cell, it used to take up to 30 - 40 minutes to complete. I then used MS access. I made a replica local table on Access to store the data. My first try was INSERT INTO COLUMNS OF LOCAL TABLE FROM (SELECT * FROM VIEW) note that this is pseudocode. This ran successfully, but again took up to 20 - 30 minutes. Then I used VBA to loop through the data and insert it in manually (using an INSERT statement) for each seperate record. This took about 10 - 15 minutes. This has been my best case yet. What i need to do after: After i have the data, I need to filter through it by department. The thing is if I put a where clause in the SQL query (the time jumps from 30 seconds to execute the query, to about 10 minutes + the time to write to local table/excel). I dont know why. MAYBE because the columns are all text columns? If we change some of the columns to integer, would that make it faster in terms of the where clause? I am looking for suggestions on how to approach this. My boss has said we could employ some Java based solution. Will this help? I am not a java person but a c#, and maybe I'll convince them to use c# as well, but i am mainly looking for suggestions on how to cut down the time. I've already cut it down from 40 minutes to 10 minutes, but the want it under 2 minutes. • Hyper-V and Hyper-threading: On or off?

  Hey all, With the new Xeon CPUs supporting Hyper-threading, what is the current wisdom with regard to using it (or not) on a Hyper-V host machine? I was originally under the impression that turning it on in a virtual host environment could be detrimental as the 'extra' CPUs were not true cores. However I've also read (unconfirmed) comments along the lines of MS doing some hard work to get Hyper-V running well in a Hyper-threading environment. Does anyone have any solid information or experience in this regard? Cheers!

• Bluetooth RFCOMM / SDP connection to a RS232 adapter in android

  Hello All, I am trying to use the Bluetooth Chat sample API app that google provides to connect to a bluetooth RS232 adapter hooked up to another device. Here is the app for reference: http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/BluetoothChat/index.html And here is the spec sheet for the RS232 connector just for reference: http://serialio.com/download/Docs/BlueSnap-guide-4.77_Commands.pdf Well the problem is that when I go to connect to the device with: mmSocket.connect(); (BluetoothSocket::connect()) I always get an IOException error thrown by the connect() method. When I do a toString on the exception I get "Service discovery failed". My question is mostly what are the cases that would cause an IOException to get thrown in the connect method? I know those are in the source somewhere but I don't know exactly how the java layer that you write apps in and the C/C++ layer that contains the actual stacks interface. I know that it uses the bluez bluetooth stack which is written in C/C++ but not sure how that ties into the java layer which is what I would think is throwing the exception. Any help on pointing me to where I can try to dissect this issue would be incredible. Also just to note I am able to pair with the RS232 adapter just fine but I am never able to actually connect. The Android API provides examples of using listenUsingRfcommWithServiceRecord() to set up a socket and createRfcommSocketToServiceRecord() to connect to that socket. I'm trying to connect to an embedded device with a BlueSMiRF Gold chip. My working Python code (using the PyBluez library), which I'd like to port to Android, is as follows: sock = bluetooth.BluetoothSocket(proto=bluetooth.RFCOMM) sock.connect((device_addr, 1)) return sock.makefile() ...so the service to connect to is simply defined as channel 1, without any SDP lookup. As the only documented mechanism I see in the Android API does SDP lookup of a UUID, I'm slightly at a loss. Using "sdptool browse" from my Linux host comes up empty, so I surmise that the chip in question simply lacks SDP support.

• Windows Server 2008 R2 Accessing NFS share without AD or NIS

  I'm trying to mount an NFS share on our NetApp SAN on Windows 2008 R2. Using XP I have no problem mounting this share without a username/NIS/pswd file etc, but the new functionality in 2008 seems to insist on either using AD or an NIS server (to "streamline" Services for NFS MS removed user account mapping) see Technet. When I go to map the share using "map network drive" no combination of "root", no username, no password, my username works. Using the command line mount -o anon \\172... :n or mount -o -u:root \\172... :n either gives me a network error 53 or 67 error Is it possible with 2008 to mount an NFS share without AD or NIS? If so what am I doing wrong? (Security is taken care off by IP address permissions and VLANs)

• Why does tracerpt use up all of my Sql Server's memory?

  We have a MS Sql Server 2008 machine with 12 GB of RAM... twice now within the last week this server was knocked on its backside by a process called "tracerpt.exe" which was found to have taken up ALL of the system's memory and leaving nothing for sqlserver. Done my homework, figured out what this program is... but still no idea why it's hogging up so much RAM (though I have an idea), nor what application is actually executing it. This server is the back-end to a Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 application which is hosted on a separate server and is our production database used for just about everything. If this program is necessary, I would like to be able to find the application that is executing this thing and remove it or disable whatever feature is causing this quite annoying occurrence. Any ideas?

• Using "offline files sync" to sync with a local resource [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Which is the best application to Sync two folders? I have been trying get my machine (XP-Pro SP3) to sync files to a local USB drive in the same way as I can with mapped network drives. I particularly want to the sync to happen automatically when the USB is connected - in the same way that Off-line files will sync when the network drive comes on line. I can get a folder on the USB mounted as a network drive, but cannot get XP to offer the off-line files functionality. I have tried MS's SyncToy - it works as advertised, and will do scheduled and ad-hoc sync's, but does not seem to offer automatic syncs. I suspect I could do this by plugging my USB into another machine on my network - but that seems heavy handed. All insight appreciated - If you know this cannot be done please say so.

  So I deleted my default website by accident on a Windows 2008 server in IIS7. This is bad because I now lost my Exchange OWA virtual directories... users are not happy =(. Also lost my https certificate I'm pretty sure. So I'm hoping there is an easy way to recover all that stuff being that it's Windows 2008 and all... Any help appreciated. I have no idea where to start or how to recover any of this stuff besides creating a new site called default website and then hitting the MS Exchange manual on how to install OWA from scratch.

  Hi, I am looking for a suitable hosting environment for an ASP.NET MVC application. One of the options I have is renting a Hyper-V server and installing my license of SQL Server 2008 on it. I'm a bit wary of shared hosting since the one I have tried so far did not seem to have very consistent performance. One potential problem is that I would have I do not not know much about SQL Server administration, so I am not sure if this is a good option. I've been running a failover cluster of two linux dedicated servers for over 5 years now and MySQL never gave me any trouble. But that was Linux, and it might be different with a windows system. Is running a halfway efficient MS SQL Server 2008 difficult? Does it require any in-depth administration knowledge? Or perhaps recurring administration effort (such as keeping the server up to date with the latest patches)? Or is it rather an "install and forget" experience similar to MySQL?

• Why can't I resize some virtual thick disks in VMWhare vSphere Client

  Let me start off by mentioning I am really really new to this whole VMWare ESX/vSphere thing, so apologies if this is a FAQ or asked a million times before using better wording. Also, please correct me if I'm using the wrong terms all over the place. We just got this brand new VMWare EXS server, and we started importing virtual machines from around the office. Some of them were originally based on VMWare, others are converted from MS Virtual Server. One of these machines needs a bigger disk, but in the vSphere Client the disk size spinedit is disabled. Disk type is thick. However, for other machines, with the same disk type, the spinedit is enabled and I can happily resize their disks. So here is the question: why can't I resize this disk in particular? All machines are freshly converted, so I assume there are no snapshots yet, which I read would stop a resize from happening (again, correct me if I'm wrong).

• Mounting a Mail Store that is in a Recovery Storage group On Exchange 2003

  If I have a production server with the Mail Store Foo in both the storage group companyName and the Recovery Storage Group, is it okay to Mount Foo in the RSG while it is mounted in companyName so I can extract some mailboxs from the recovery storage group? Basically I am wonder if it is okay to mount it in both Production and the Recovery Storage Groups while the mail server is in production and the particular mail store is in production.   Hi, I'm using MS TMG 2010 Standard as my single firewall to publish my Exchange Server and IIS website to the internet, however it is just one VM in the DMZ network with just one network card (vNIC), what sort of redundancy method that is suitable for making this firewall VM redundant / automatically failover in my DR site ? Because it is very important in the event of disaster recovery all important email through various mobile device will still need to operate and it is impossible if this TMG 2010 VM is offline. is it by using: 1. Multicast NLB 2. Any other clustering 3. VMware HA / FT (one VM in production, the other VM in DR site with different subnet ?) Any suggestion and idea willl be appreciated. Thanks

• Exchange 2007 ignoring Send Connectors (again)

  Wow, I'm at a loss here -- I posted this exact same question a while back and it's doing the exact same thing: my Send Connector I've created for "Microsoft Domains" (hotmail.com cost 1) is being ignored again and routed through the "Default" Send Connector (* cost 10). Last time, I had the same cost for both Send Connectors, but I've tried setting the Default connector to 5, 10, 100, etc. and regardless, all mail gets routed through that connector (which smarthosts through Postini). Besides calling an air strike on Redmond, what else can I do? MS is blocking Postini again, need to get this working permanently.
