• Burg Custom Icons work only with specific themes

  I have made a custom icon for burg loader for my Lenovo Recovery Partition.I have made 3 icons : large_qdrive.png (128 X 128 pixels) small_qdrive.png (24 X 24 pixels) grey_qdrive.png (128 x 128 pixels) The .png icons that I created I made them using gimp from a qdrive.ico file that I found in the Lenovo Recovery Partition. I transferred the icons to the /boot/burg/themes/icons folder and I added to the class list of the grey,large,small and the hover files the following lines : -qdrive { image = "$$/large_qdrive.png" } in the large file -qdrive { image = "$$/small_qdrive.png" } in the small file -qdrive { image = "$$/grey_qdrive.png" } in the grey file -qdrive { image = "$$/grey_qdrive.png:$$/large_qdrive.png" } in the hover file I ran sudo update-burg and after that I modified the following line in the burg.cfg file : menuentry "Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda2)" --class windows --class os { to menuentry "Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda2)" --class qdrive --class os { and I also tried to change the title for the Lenovo Recovery Partition,so I tried this as well: menuentry "Lenovo Recovery Partition (on /dev/sda2)" --class qdrive --class os { None of this tries enforced actually burg loader to use the custom icon that I made and I can't figure out why. I have to mention also that there are a few themes that I have installed in burg which actually are able to use the small_qdrive.png icon that I made,but all the others which use either the large_qdrive.png or the grey_qdrive.png weren't able to use the custom icons. I have double checked for typos in all the files that I have created or I modified,so I am pretty sure that I haven't misspelled anything. I have checked also the title of the custom icons that I made and neither of them have a typo. I have looked also if there are any other folder that the themes might use to retrieve the icons,but it seems that all of them except for **Fortune** theme,which I downloaded from OMG!UBUNTU,use the icons folder which is located in /boot/burg/themes/icons I tried to add the custom icons to the icons folder of the theme **Fortune**,but still nothing happened.

• Dual Boot Installing Ubuntu 12.04 with Windows 7 (64) on a non UEFI system

  I cannot seem to install the correct boot loader for a non-UEFI firmware system. I'm trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7 (64) which are technically compatible with GPT but for windows only if the firmware is UEFI enabled. My system uses the old BIOS system and does not support UEFI. Therefore, whenever I finish my Ubuntu install and try to install Windows I get a "cannot install to GPT partition type" error. Even if I use Gparted to format a special NTFS file format for windows it can't handle the GPT partition style because it doesn't have UEFI. But my ubuntu install always forces GPT during installation and never asks if I want to install the old BIOS style MBR instead. How do I resolve this? Both OS's will install fine on their own the problem is when I try to install the second OS it doesn't recognize any of the other's partitions and tries to rewrite it's own on top of the other. I've tried both OS's first and always run into the same problem. Since there is no way to make Windows recognize GPT without upgrading my Motherboard how do I tell Ubuntu to use the old BIOS MBR on install? Do I have to download a special Ubuntu with a specific grub version? or should I manaually configure my partition somehow to force it not to use GPT? Thank you,

• On Golf Tournaments & Installers

  I've been in touch recently with Ann Maybury, who is creating a golf tournament roundrobin manager for senior citizens in Palm Desert, California. The application is created on the NetBeans Platform and looks as follows, very neat and professional: Ann has been working on wrapping up the application for distribution and needs to include the JRE, since end users of the application don't necessarily have the JRE installed when they install the application. Several blogs and articles are available for creating and customizing installers for NetBeans Platform applications, as well as for bundling the JRE and other resources, though there are some gaps and inccuracies in those documents. However, now there's a new official tutorial, for the first time: http://platform.netbeans.org/tutorials/nbm-nbi.html The above is focused on Ant builds and Windows, specifically, and doesn't cover Maven scenarios, for which there'll be a separate tutorial soon. • How do I create my own programming language and a compiler for it

  I am thorough with programming and have come across languages including BASIC, FORTRAN, COBOL, LISP, LOGO, Java, C++, C, MATLAB, Mathematica, Python, Ruby, Perl, Javascript, Assembly and so on. I can't understand how people create programming languages and devise compilers for it. I also couldn't understand how people create OS like Windows, Mac, UNIX, DOS and so on. The other thing that is mysterious to me is how people create libraries like OpenGL, OpenCL, OpenCV, Cocoa, MFC and so on. The last thing I am unable to figure out is how scientists devise an assembly language and an assembler for a microprocessor. I would really like to learn all of these stuff and I am 15 years old. I always wanted to be a computer scientist some one like Babbage, Turing, Shannon, or Dennis Ritchie. I have already read Aho's Compiler Design and Tanenbaum's OS concepts book and they all only discuss concepts and code in a high level. They don't go into the details and nuances and how to devise a compiler or operating system. I want a concrete understanding so that I can create one myself and not just an understanding of what a thread, semaphore, process, or parsing is. I asked my brother about all this. He is a SB student in EECS at MIT and hasn't got a clue of how to actually create all these stuff in the real world. All he knows is just an understanding of Compiler Design and OS concepts like the ones that you guys have mentioned (ie like Thread, Synchronisation, Concurrency, memory management, Lexical Analysis, Intermediate code generation and so on)

• Pros and Cons between learning to program on Windows and Linux and Macs

  I have been studying IT for 2 years and I'm going to graduate soon in this year (if everything goes well). I think it's time for me to choose a path to specialized into some fields of this large industry. Personally, I want to be a game programmer. But to be a game programmer, surely I have to invest my time to study Windows Programming, then DirectX and other programming techniques related to game. On the other hand, Linux seems promising as well. I am not sure about Game Programming on for it, but it seems become an expert for this OS, and by expert it's not about using the OS to become an administrator, but can do further than that, such as understand the OS to its essence and can produce applications for it. However, there's some obstacles in my view for this development path. Many of my friends think that Linux is based on free and open source, and if you follow it, as its name suggested: Free and Open Source, it means we also give away our software free. Otherwise, we will have to find a second job to make living. Currently, I think a viable way to make money on Linux is doing works related to client-server. Another way to developer my career is to become expert in developing business applications for companies. This is more on business, not on specialized IT fields so I am not really interested. Another alternative is programming on mobile devices, such as iPhone, Android and it seems very promising and easier to approach. Another way is to become a computer scientist and research on academic subjects such as AI, human-computer interaction, but this is far beyond my reach, so I won't invest my time on it until I feel I am experienced enough. That's all I can think of for now. I may miss a lot of things, so I need more opinions as input to get the big picture of the industry for my career path.

• Newbie tips, please [closed]

  So, I just got a new computer and I want to put Ubuntu on my old laptop. I just need few tips before installing it. 1.Programs, where to download, how to download, what is the "ending" (windows has .exe) 2. How much is command line involved? And where to get the most usual commands? 3.Few programs you recommend (graphics editing, IDE, video player, web browser) 4. Do I have to download drivers when installing new OS? I plan on getting fully rid of Windows. I have no idea of the name of my graphics card, so how do I can get to know what it is if I have to download drivers? (I don't know the name because it's not on the original box, or anywhere on the internet, believe me) 5. When installing new OS does it destroy everything else on the hard drive? 6. Anti-virus, do I need one? I'm not super paranoid, and I don't visit "shady" sites. Please note that I have never used linux, or any other OS than Windows and sorry for my bad english. If this is the wrong place to post this, then please remove this. Thank you.

• How to execute a script while booting Linux from flashdrive?

  I know i can make my script run at boot time in runlevel 2 by putting it in /etc/init.d/ and creating a symbolic to it in /etc/rc2.d but thats when Linux is on hard drive. I want to run my script from a flashdrive such that when a user plug in a flashdrive and powers ON the machine, it may start booting from the OS in flash drive and eventually executing my script. How can I achieve such a functionality? I have tried burning OS to flashdrive but I never succeeded in booting OS from flashdrive.

• Error loading libGL.so.1

  When attempting to run various pieces of software (notably Steam and Yenka), I have come across an error similar to this: enter code here error while loading shared libraries: libGL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I'm running a 64 bit system, with an NVidia Optimus card (I dual boot for certain windows only software that requires a dedicated graphics card). I have bumblebee installed, and I am using the nvidia-current driver, rather that one downloaded from NVidia, as recommended. The library (libGL.so.1) is not present in the top directory of /usr/lib, however it is present in /usr/lib32/nvidia-current, as a softlink to /usr/lib32/nvidia-current/libGL.so.304.64. A section of the output from ldconfig -p: libGL.so.1 (libc6,x86-64, OS ABI: Linux 2.4.20) => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1 libGL.so (libc6,x86-64, OS ABI: Linux 2.4.20) => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libGL.so libGL.so (libc6,x86-64, OS ABI: Linux 2.4.20) => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so Obviously a library with that name is being loaded, but they are located in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu, however installed software doesn't seem to able to 'see' it. For Steam, running it with optirun causes it to work, but this is not the case for Yenka. I assume that optirun causes the library stored in /usr/lib32/nvidia-current to be used, which allows Steam to run, so I can't understant why Yenka won't run. Can anyone explain why software can't see the normal mesa library, and why Yenka refuses to run with the nvidia-current library?

  Ignore the palm trees here. I have some oak-like trees when I'm zoomed in: They disappear when I zoom out: Is this normal? Is this something to do with draw distance? How can I change this so my trees don't disappear? The reason I ask is because my installation had a weird terrain glitch. If this isn't normal I'm going to reinstall right away because I'm always thinking 'is that a feature? Or a glitch'?

I need to replace the ambaince dark icon to fs icon by default for all the login and live cd. How to permanentely change the os name It should not change even the customer update the operating system too. I am using the remastersys. I am looking to develop the new distro. like mint ,, If i had an breif explanation of the creation of the repository and maintaining the updates . it will be more helpfull. Kindly provind the link for creating the full fledged os based on the ubuntu .. like mint, Snowlinux, etc did.. replace the grub with burg for default installation If remastersys is not good . then provide me some other tool to create . • Create new partition on ssd hard (remove hibernate)

  I bought Dell Vostro 3360 notebook with Windows 7 It has 128 GB SSD hard disk, it is already has 4 partitions: Dell partition, Recovery partition, OS partition, Hibernate partition. Here is screenshot (Russian language, but I made some marks): I want to split OS partition, because I need c:\ and d:\ . Reason is that I have a lot of difficulties with administration mode on c:. So I tried to split OS partition but I already have 4 partitions. Can I remove hibernate partition without consequences? I have Hibernate disabled in settings, but I have hiberfil.sys file on c:\ If I can remove it, how can I do this, I can't do this with standard GUI disk managment tool

• Routing using Linux with 2 NIC cards

  Configured Clear OS to be in Gateway mode on a machine with two NIC cards. eth0:192.168.2.0/24 with ip 192.168.2.27 which is connected to a modem and thus have internet connectivity. eth1:192.168.122.0/24 with ip 192.168.122.10 which is connected to other machines in LAN through switch. LAN machines with network 192.168.122.0 is not getting internet.How can they get internet Through Clear OS gateway.I have enabled packet forwarding in clear os using "ip_forward=1" What am i missing?.Can you please help me in this. Following are the static routing i have added: on LAN machine1 with ip address 192.168.122.11 ip route add 192.168.2.0/24 via 192.168.122.10 dev eth0 ip route show 192.168.2.0/24 via 192.168.122.10 dev eth0 192.168.122.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.122.11 But still 192.168.2.0/24 network is not reachable.Where can be the problem??

• Building Enterprise Smartphone App &ndash; Part 2: Platforms and Features

  This is part 2 in a series of posts based on a talk I gave recently at the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group.  Feel free to leave feedback. In the previous post I discussed what reasons a company might have for creating a smartphone application.  In this installment I will cover some of history and state of the different platforms as well as features that can be leveraged for building enterprise smartphone applications. Platforms Before you start choosing a platform to develop your solutions on it is good to understand how we got here and what features you can leverage. History To my memory we owe all of this to a product called the Apple Newton that came out in 1987. It was the first PDA and back then I was much more of an Apple fan.  I was very impressed with this device even though it never really went anywhere.  The Palm Pilot by US Robotics was the next major advancement in PDA. It had a simple short hand window that allowed for quick stylus entry.. Later, Windows CE came out and started the broadening of the PDA market. After that it was the Palm and CE operating systems that started showing up on cell phones and for some time these were the two dominant operating systems that were distributed with devices from multiple hardware vendors. Current The iPhone was the first smartphone to take away the stylus and give us a multi-touch interface.  It was a revolution in usability and really changed the attractiveness of smartphones for the general public.  This brought us to the beginning of the current state of the market with the concept of an online store that makes it easy for customers to get new features and functionality on demand. With Android, Google made this more than a one horse race.  Not only did they come to compete, their low cost actually made them the leading OS.  Of course what made Android so attractive also is its major fault.  It is so open that it has been a target for malware which leaves consumers exposed.  Fortunately for Google though, most consumers aren’t aware of the threat that they are under. Although Microsoft had put out one of the first smart phone operating systems with CE it had to play catch up and finally came out with the Windows Phone.  They have gone for a market approach between those of iOS and Android.  They support multiple hardware vendors like Google, but they kept a certification process for applications that is similar to Apple.  They also created a user interface that was different enough to give it a clear separation from the other two platforms. The result of all this is hundreds of millions of smartphones being sold monthly across all three platforms giving us a wide range of choices and challenges when it comes to developing solutions. Features So what are the features that make these devices flexible enough be considered for use in the enterprise? The biggest advantage of today's devices is network connectivity.  The ability to access information from multiple sources at a moment’s notice is critical for businesses.  Add to that the ability to communicate over a variety of text, voice and video modes and we have a powerful starting point. Every smartphone has a cameras and they are not just useful for posting to Instagram. We are seeing more applications such as Bing vision that allow us to scan just about any printed code or text to find information.  These capabilities have been made available to developers in the form of standard libraries for reading barcodes of just about an flavor and optical character recognition (OCR) interpretation. Bluetooth give us the ability to communicate with multiple devices. Whether these are headsets, keyboard or printers the wireless communication capabilities are just starting to evolve.  The more these wireless communication protocols grow, the more opportunities we will see to transfer data between users and a variety of devices. Local storage of information that can be called up even when the device cannot reach the network is the other big capability.  This give users the ability to work offline as well and transmit information when connections are restored. These are the tools that we have to work with to build applications that can be leveraged to gain a competitive advantage for companies that implement them. • windows 7 is not working with Ubuntu 12.04

  I have one problem, I am unable to start windows 7 which is installed with Ubuntu 12.04 because I want to utilize all resource in diff. OS. Let me tell you the installation I have done. I have installed everything with USB because my CD ROM is damaged. 1) I have installed Windows 7 in c: then I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 in C: Now when I start my PC it shows list of OS first like -Ubuntu 12.04 -Windows 7 When I click on Windows 7 it do not starts and again shows the list of OS. I have also tried to reinstall the windows 7 using USB but it gives error of something UI or Boot configuration error. Even now Ubuntu 12.04 is also not reinstalling. Now what I want to do is install windows 7 and install ubuntu 12.04 in virtual box so that I can run both system as this is not working. But can't because I can't open Window 7 even can't format my drive. Please suggest something.

• Is Apple getting out of the general purpose development platform business?

  I've been doing general ANSI C/Console C++/Java/Web development on Mac hardware for about ten years. I make no claims of objective superiority over other platforms, it just satisfies my personal tastes. With the success of the iPhone and the related App store there was some speculation that Apple would get out of the general purpose computer market, and become a closed software ecosystem, focusing on consumer appliances. I pooh-poohed the speculation at the time, but this week Apple announced that a) they were opening an App store for the Mac, b) Java applications would not be eligible for the App store, c) the Apple JVM was being deprecated and might not be available for future releases of OS X. I'm not a Java developer per se, but I work in a research lab that occasionally writes Java applications, and also depends on tools written Java. This has the potential to be a huge pain in the butt for us. As of now, there is no other JVM for OS X that we can point our end users to. Soy Latte and OpenJDK might be appropriate for developers, but the complexity of the installation makes them inappropriate for end users. Eventually I expect Oracle/SUN will produce a replacement JVM for OS X. More worrisome to me is that Apple used to specifically advertise that it was an excellent platform for scientific development, because they supported all major language platforms. Is the deprecation of their JVM a sign that this market no longer interests them?

• Windows 8 Secureboot: How do you bootup from another device such as cd/dvd drive or usb flash etc.?

  On PC's and laptops running an older OS, this is just a simple matter of going into the BIOS and setting the boot sequence and putting the boot cd/dvd in the drive. In many cases you can even just hit one of the F* function keys to bring up the boot sequence menu on-the-fly during POST. The main problem I'm running into is that other devices besides the primary HD is disabled when SecureBoot is enabled. So far the only way I've gotten it to work is to disable SecureBoot and enable something called legacy mode. Needless to say this make it difficult to boot things like OS recovery tools, PartitionHD backups, Linux LiveCD's and a bunch of others. Is there another procedure for doing this since it seems to mess up the Windows 8 install? By mess up I mean that after re-enabling SecureBoot and starting Windows 8 normally, the OS goes into a 'preping repair phase' for some reason that takes forever to complete before getting into a usable desktop.

• Is it possible to upgrade HTC HD2 to Windows Mobile 7? [closed]

  I have HD2 over one year and I have to say it was pretty wrong purchase. Both HTC HW and MS OS (Windows Mobile 6.5) are somehow crappy. I had several crashes wich resulted in hard reset (no flashing and almost no additionally installed applications) and phone was under repair two times (2x replaced motherboard and 1x replaced dislay). After these reapirs at least HW works pretty well but OS is still bad. I would like to upgrade the phone to Windows Mobile 7. I'm not looking for some flashing (I already saw some guides). I'm ready to pay for upgrade to have it legal. Is it possible? Buying new phone just to have SW upgrade is ridiculous. Btw. My primary phone is iPhone 4 and I think on iPhone 3GS it is possible to upgrade OS iOS 4 so I would like to see similar possibility with Windows Mobile.

• Generating and collaborating on network map diagrams?

  I have to turn out some network topology maps for very large networks. I'd like the format for the maps to be something other people can also edit and contribute to regardless of what software I'm using on my Mac to build them. I don't mind spending money on my end for software, but I can't require that my clients spend any money. I also can't promise my clients are also using OS X -- they could be running Linux or Windows. Is there a best software application on OS X for producing maps that I can share with other, non-OS X, users? Is there a best format for sharing topology maps that I should use when exporting the maps to disk?

The other three WSUS servers are replicas of this server. Currently, we are only controlling desktop OS updates through WSUS. I would like to control server OS updates through WSUS as well. There is no need for all of these server updates to be on WSUS servers at the remote sites. The only server that would need a copy of them is WSUS1. Is there a way to keep my current infrastructure as-is and add server OS updates only to WSUS1, even though the others are set up as replicas, or will I need to configure an additional WSUS server that's not replicated?

• Partition table damaged

  Hello, I'm currently in a terrible situation with my hdd: I was trying to install an OS side by side with my windows 7 x64 and I used the Paragon Partition Manager feature made for that. It disabled/hid/(damaged?) one of my partitions and now I can no longer access it. The partition, unfortunately, contains data I need to access urgently and I've got no backup. To complicate things even further I don't have another PC (I'm writing this msg from my iphone) and all I can rely on is a backtrac 4 disk (wkn't connect to my wifi, gets stuck obtaining IP address) and. Windows 7 x64 disk. Booting into windows fails with the pc hanging on the starting windows screen. Safe mode won't work either. Is there anything I can do? Here's the layout of the disk: Recovery partition Win partition Unallocated space (it's supposed to be my data partition) Other os partition (don't care about that, the installation of the other OS failed) Please help me, I'm desperate.

• Small footprint on a Laptop

  I am trying to find a solution where I can do the following: 1) Run a small footprint on my laptop 2) Run virtual instances of OS w/ no primary OS installed. All the OS that I will ever use will be all virtualized. I tried playing around with the VMware Esxi, and got it to boot it from the flash drive, etc. But this just runs the server. I cannot actually run my virtual instances from there. Anyone has done this? Something similar implemented with VMWare products without needing 2 computers will be great. Thanks, -Subhash
