We are maintaining a database server that serve a large number of clients. Each client typically running serveral client-applications. The total number of connections to the database server (Oracle 9i) is reaching 800 connections on peak load. The windows 2003 server is starting to run out of memory. We are now planning to move to 64bit Windows in order to gain higher memory capability. As a developer I suggest moving to multi-tier architecture with conneciton pooling, which I believe is a natural solution to this problem. However, in order to support my idea, I want the information on:
what exactly is the typical number of connections allowed for Oracle database ?
What is the problem when the number connections is too high ? Too much memory comsumption ? or too many sockets opened ? or too many context switching between threads ?
To be a little bit specific, how could Oracle Forms application scale to thousand of users without facing this problem ? Shall Oracle RAC applied to this case ?
I'm sure the answer to this question should depend on quite a number of factors, like the exact spec of the hardware being used. I'm expecting a rough estimation or some experience from the real world.
Today and few days ago i have tried to connect by skype and i couldn't any .So i thought that i can remember wrong password and changed but result was same .It try to connect always and can't connect.Other person who was waiting me on skype has said on email that skype hardly connect on me too.It looks skype dead.it may just problem on me . please can u tell me it works on you ?
I am unable to SSH into an existing ESXi server. I have a user which is in the "root" and "users" group and is able to connect via vSphere. However after enabling "Remote support (SSH)", attempting to connect by putty and entering my username/password when prompted I am presented with an "Access Denied" message.
I have run through the options presented at this KB article to no avail. I have taken down the firewall on the machine (it is remote) temporarily to check if this helped - no change.
The username/password are definitely correct and I can obviously get connectivity if I am presented with the username/password prompt.
I am at a bit of a loss what else I can try.
Thanks all
I just installed Ubuntu Server 12.04 in an office machine with openSSH, DNS and LAMP Server. I also made the IP static and I can access the server in my office premises easily, but when I try to access my server from my home it is not working.
I know I have to make some changes and need to install some firewall (I had just gone through with a couple of posts) but I guess an expert advise will save my time here.
Trying to copy a few TBs betweek Solaris 10 u9 systems
A single scp only seems to be able to transfer around 120MB/min, over a 1GB network. If I run multiple scp copies, each one will do 120MB/min, so it is not the network as far as I can see.
Any hints on how to tweak the Solaris settings to open a bigger pipe. Have the same problem with another piece of software that unfortunately does not seem to be able to be split into separate processes.
I have my work system on the ip range 172.16.xx.yy, and I have my personal system on the ip range 10.0.xx.yy. Both of them, however, are on the same network of my University, but on different LANs/VLANs (i hope i used the right word here).
How can I remotely connect to my work system from my PC, given that both use private IP addresses?
If such a thing is not possible with current set up, what minimal changes are required for it?
I bought a used 15" ViewSonic LCD monitor (VP150m) and noticed that it has a 3.5mm connector on the back labeled “touch i/o”. I’m trying to figure out how to use the touch function but am having trouble finding anything useful.
First, I cannot find any information on what kind of cable it uses (TS, TRS, TRRS, etc.), or how to connect it to the computer.
Second, I cannot find touch drivers for it—though I can find a page that mentions how easy it is to install them.
Does anyone have any information on using the touchscreen function of the VP150m? Thanks a lot.
Hi,
Sometimes my ssh client will take forever to login.
This happens when the server is not responding (overloaded, killed processed, ...). My automated scripts will then fail because the ssh process will never exit.
Is there a ssh configuration value to set a timeout in order to fail if ssh can't login after a predefined number of seconds?
I know there are knobs on the server side, but I have to set this on the client side as the sshd process is not responding, or responding incorrectly.
Thanks!
I need the laptops at my office to have a static IP for security purposes and identification. However, some employees take their laptops home in the evening. If I have the wifi config set to use a static IP, how can they have a dynamic IP at home?
the laptops are using Windows Vista and Windows 7.
Hi, a colleague at work asked this question:
My local church want to get WiFi
enabled in the whole of their offices
and main church building. The offices
and main building are in the same
overall structure and so the signal
does not need to travel outside to any
other buildings outside this main
structure.
Where would I start on such a project
and what kind of repeaters are needed
(and how are they set up) given that
some of the walls are pretty thick.
Do you still have one ADSL line coming
in to router or are there some options
of having two lines coming in so that
they isn't a single point of failure.
Am looking at fibre for the broadband
for increased speed.
Any starting pointers appreciated.
Rather than going through each of my apps and modifying settings, or tweaking individual browser settings (I use three different browsers) or just being careful not to type non-SSL URLs into the web address bar, is there a solution at the Windows level that will prevent anything from connecting to the web from my laptop unless it's using SSL?
I also have mini apps installed like Gmail checker, etc that connect to the web of their own volition using my usernames, passwords and such, so it goes beyond just web browsers.
The reason I'm asking is I want to work securely on the general Internet when on public Wifi (e.g. coffee shops) without a lot of hassle or having to remember everything that needs to be locked down.
When I'm back home I want to go back to full access mode using any kind of protocol on the web.
If a website doesn't support SSL when I'm out in public then I just don't surf it - that's not a worry to me.

The question pretty much says it all. I have Windows 8 Professional 64-bit and my main/only method of getting connected to the internet is to use this USB dongle/modem I have. Now it works perfectly, but when I go into the Windows "store" app it keeps on saying that I'm not connected to the web.
In fact this happens for all "apps", they all think I'm not connected to the web when I actually am. Normal desktop applications e.g. browsers run fine. Is this a bug that has still not been resolved or is there some setting I need to go mess with?
Thanks in advance!
Is anybody aware of how to avoid the latest version of the Ubuntu CD-live from re-connecting to the Internet from the command line while it is still connected? It should prevent Ubuntu from re-connecting after it is disconnected. Versions after 9.04 have the annoying habit of re-connecting automatically.
The setup:
Ubuntu with local Vmware Workstation 10 (everything works locally)
Connects(File- Connect to Server) Debian server with the same Vmware Workstation 10 (Windows XP Guest)
Debian setup does not allow raw disk access nor shared folders (most options does not exist)
No shared folder
No physical disk option
I use root user for this machine. Default install.
I've tried to add shared folder from command line - it does not work.
How to enable shared folders or raw disk access?
I have created new Windows 8 64 bit template from scratch - I cannot use physical HDD either, and no SharedFolder option. I think this is something about security policy of remote server.
I connect the internet through Ad-hoc network, My machine uses win7 and another uses winows xp, There's no problem when I connect the XP machine, but if i disconnect and reconnect the net, then my local network is marked as "Unidentified network",unless restart the XP machine, I don't know why?
I currently use DAUM PLayer (Pot Player) but I have problems streaming video to my laptop unless it is plugged into the network. An easy fix (so I thought) would be to find a player were I could adjust the cache / buffer so say 5 mins+ is read to the local Hdrive and then played from there...
I can not work out how to do this in any player I have VLC, MPCHC and DAUM installed.
All I want to do is increase the file buffer so X amount of the networkfile is copied to the local drive and then played... so all stuttering is stopped?
How do I do this?
It only affects Gmail. I have tested other HTTP, FTP and HTTPS websites and downloading is fine, at the exact same time the problem is affecting a Gmail attachment download.
The symptoms include both:
High waiting time, before the download starts (in the order of 30 seconds); AND
Very slow download transfer speeds ( in the order of 1kbps)
It's a very strange problem, and I didn't find any recent issues relating to Google Australia. The account works fine at another site with a different ISP, so it's either a computer configuration or ISP - I lean to the latter.

I'm using http://www.hetzner.de/en/.
They send me something like that:
Your Hetzner-Server is now active. Thank you for choosing Hetzner Online as your Web Hosting partner.
You can access your server immediately via SSH2, using following details:
IP-Address: *.*.*.*
Login: "login"
Password: "password"
So, I'm trying to connect to this server in this way:
ssh login@*.*.*.*
Then I input my password, but it gives an error "permission denied".
Can anyone tel me why and how can I fix this?
I got a big problem, I guess it's something like a dos attack but I am not sure.
Since this morning, my database is very slow and gives me 7/10 times a too many connections error or tries to login with www-data user (as following up of the too many connections error?).
I tried to locate the issue by mysql command line with 'show fullprocess list' but it gives me just one response back and that 'me'.
What can I do about this? The websites are still running ok, but mysql is overused I guess.
Hi,
I have a desktop and a laptop connected to same wifi router.
Desktop is connected with wire and laptop with wifi.
Both the system runs windows 7 and are on the same workgroup.
I have shared some folders on desktop and can view the shared folder list on laptop under "network places".
But when I try to open a folder, a prompt appears for username and password.
When I enter BOTH username and password, It does not authenticate
when I enter ONLY username, I get:-
"Windows cannot access \WIn71\Setups
you do not have permission to access ..."
Now to get around this message I have to give access to "Guests" group on my desktop shared folder.
Cant seem to figure out why It cant authenticate username with password.
And giving access to "Guests" does not sounds safe!
Morning/evening gents.
I purchased a radical domain name today to set up a name for my services and to set up SSL. I configured the SSL fine and all but when I went to my website I couldn't connect. I can connect to the site with any other device in my house and my friend can connect to it as well from outside of the LAN. I am hosting the services with my computer and I can't access the service. Whenever I ping it using the command prompt I get a result of "General Failure.". It saddens me that they couldn't make a better message as it kind of brings me down. I'm not sure what's the deal here as I have all of my firewalls down and my ports are forwarded. Running Windows 7.
Thanks for the assistance chaps.
Good Morning,
I would like to know what is the best arrangement for setting up 24 computers at a facility. We do not want these computers to join our domain because of security concerns. We plan on having these public computers connect to our wifi network. If anyone knows of the best way to approach this, that would be great! We also need to add printers to these public computers. We would also like to lock each computer down. Since we are not connecting by network, I assume we would have to configure each group policy.
