  In this post I will be continuing my discussion on ASP.Net MVC 4.0 mobile development. You can have a look at my first post on the subject here . Make sure you read it and understand it well before you move one reading the remaining of this post. I will not be writing any code in this post. I will try to explain a few concepts related to the MVC 4.0 mobile functionality. In this post I will be looking into the Browser Overriding feature in ASP.Net MVC 4.0. By that I mean that we override the user agent for a given user session. This is very useful feature for people who visit a site through a device and they experience the mobile version of the site, but what they really want is the option to be able to switch to the desktop view. "Why they might want to do that?", you might wonder.Well first of all the users of our ASP.Net MVC 4.0 application will appreciate that they have the option to switch views while some others will think that they will enjoy more the contents of our website with the "desktop view" since the mobile device they view our site has a quite large display.  Obviously this is only one site. These are just different views that are rendered.To put it simply, browser overriding lets our application treat requests as if they were coming from a different browser rather than the one they are actually from. In order to do that programmatically we must have a look at the System.Web.WebPages namespace and the classes in it. Most specifically the class BrowserHelpers. Have a look at the picture below   In this class we see some extension methods for HttpContext class.These methods are called extensions-helpers methods and we use them to switch to one browser from another thus overriding the current/actual browser. These APIs have effect on layout,views and partial views and will not affect any other ASP.Net Request.Browser related functionality.The overridden browser is stored in a cookie. Let me explain what some of these methods do. SetOverriddenBrowser() -  let us set the user agent string to specific value GetOverriddenBrowser() -  let us get the overridden value ClearOverriddenBrowser() -  let us remove any overridden user agent for the current request   To recap, in our ASP.Net MVC 4.0 applications when our application is viewed in our mobile devices, we can have a link like "Desktop View" for all those who desperately want to see the site with in full desktop-browser version.We then can specify a browser type override.   I am trying to create a custom session by creating a custom.desktop file in /usr/share/xesessions folder. Remember this is not a gnome or some other session. I have created my own application for this session, which are simple. Case 1 Chrome Browser Contents of custom.desktop file [Desktop Entry] Name=Internet Kiosk Comment=This is an internet kiosk Exec=google-chrome --kiosk TryExec= Icon= Type=Application Issue Chrome browser starts in kiosk mode but does not capture complete screen area. Some area is left at the bottom and right side of the screen. Case 2 Custom pyGTK app (Quickly) Contents of custom.desktop file [Desktop Entry] Name=Custom Kiosk Comment=This is a custom kiosk Exec=~/MyCustomPyGTKApp TryExec= Icon= Type=Application Issue My custom pyGTK app has window.fullScreen() in the code. That means it should open in full screen without the window chrome (and it does under the normal session). But that too, leaves lots of space around it. Need Help Can anyone tell me whats going on here. I think its some issue with borders as pointed out at http://www.instructables.com/id/Setting-Up-Ubuntu-as-a-Kiosk-Web-Appliance/?ALLSTEPS in Step 8 If by chance, Google Chromium is not stretched to the edges with the --kiosk switch enabled there is a simple fix. To stretch Chromium simply log in as your regular user and edit chromeKiosk.sh to not have the --kiosk switch. Then log in as the restricted user, click the wrench and choose options. Then on the Personal Stuff tab select Hide system title bar and use compact borders. Close the options screen and stretch Chromium to fit the monitor. Then go back into the options window and set it to Use system title bar and borders. After this is done, log out of your restricted user (might need to just reboot) and log into your regular user. Edit chromeKiosk.sh back to include the --kiosk switch again and Chromium should be full screen next time you log into the restricted user. If I were to use a custom pyGTK or a gtkmm app, how should I get around this issue. window.fullScreen() should occupy the complete screen area. This has to be done programmatically or in some other way that can scale. I have to deploy this on large number of machines located at different geographical areas. Doing it manually on every machine is not possible.

  I have a website that doesn't have/need a favicon. Is there a way to instruct the browser not to waste a request looking for /favicon.ico ? I don't mean filtering logs, but something client-side, like this: <link rel="shortcut icon" href="about:blank" /> That appears to work, but I'm not in a position to do comprehensive tests, (and search engines are being unhelpful). Can anyone confirm if this is a valid method, or provide a suitable alternative?

  I'm trying to understand how to use the XNA XML content importer to instantiate non-trivial objects that are more than a collection of basic properties (e.g., a class that inherits from DrawableGameObject or GameObject and requires other things to be passed into its constructor). Is it possible to pass existing external instances (e.g., an instance of the current Game) to the constructor of an object that's being created using the default XNA XML content loader? For example, imagine that I have the following class, inheriting from DrawableGameComponent: public class Character : DrawableGameComponent { public string Name { get; set; } public Character(Game game) : base(game) { } public override void Update(GameTime gameTime) { } public override void Draw(GameTime gameTime) { } } If I had a simple class that did not need other parameters in its constructor (i.e., the Game instance), then I could simply use this XML: <XnaContent> <Asset Type="MyNamespace.Character"> <Name>John Doe</Name> </Asset> </XnaContent> ...and then create an instance of Character using this code: var character = Content.Load<Character>("MyXmlAssetName"); But that won't work because I need to pass the need to pass the Game into the constructor. What's the best way to handle this situation? Is there a way to pass in things like the current Game using the default XNA XML content loader? Do I need to write my own XML loader? (If so, how?) Is there a better object-oriented design that I should be using for my classes? • How can I force my browser to search Google in English?

  I'm too bored of seeing sites like Google and such show up in my native language, I would rather like them to be in English. Yet, I have to explicitly change the URL to .com and en and that kind of parameters in order for them to show up in English. Can I somehow force this? So, how is Google configured? However, it is set to English on the site itself so it has to be my browser: Then, how does my browser land up on non-english pages, like Google? It usually shows up in non-English when I'm performing a search, which uses: {google:baseURL}search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}{google:instantFieldTrialGroupParameter}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s When performing a search, it fills these variables in with non-english values.   I am installing a proprietary CAD application (MEDUSA4 personal) and the installer wants to know the path to my web browser (as a prerequisite for online help). I have the default firefox installation and chromium, but I don't know the installation path for any of them, and couldn't find them among the usual suspects (/usr/bin, /usr/lib). It would be nice if you could tell me the path to one of them, and even nicer if you can tell me how to find out the installation path to any package managed by apt.

  I had installed Kaspersky AV 2010 two days ago. Everything was fine until I was not able to access the internet a few minutes back with the 32 bit browsers I have installed - Chrome, Firefox and the 32 bit IE. Then I see that utorrent is working fine!! So again I checked with the 64 bit IE and I could access the internet. I am currently using IE 64 bit to access superuser. Please help! I have uninstalled the KAV 2010. I thought that was the problem. Is this any virus or something? Also, whenever any browser (except IE 64), the screen freezes. Nothing except the browser works! And after the browser is closed, everything comes back to normal. Thanks!

  In a Windows Explorer window where you browse files in Windows 7, I would like to add a new context menu that will allow me to open a file on my local Dev Server. So it would have to open a browser like Google Crome and the URL would have to be the file path but slightly different removing part of it and prepending my localhost URL. For example if the file I am right clicking on, the path for that file might be... E:\Server\htdocs\labs\php\testProject\test.php I would need a button to click in the context menu Open in Browser and it would open my Web Browser with a URL like this... http://localhost/labs/php/testProject/test.php I would love to be able to do this, any ideas or help would greatly be appreciated! To go one step further, would to be able to somehow make the context menu item only show up on File that are under this folder.... ``E:\Server\htdocs` but this is far less important.

• I cannot change the grub Default item from OS-1, but I can from OS-2 (dual-boot 10.04 on both)

  My 10.04 system (OS-1) got into a tangle the other day, so I installed a second, dual-boot 10.04 (OS-2), so that I could trouble-shoot the hung system... In case it is relevant to my question, I'll mention that since I got OS-1 working again, it has shown a few battle wounds from its ordeal (.. actually the ordeal was mine ... trying to figure it all out ;) ... I lost some custom settings, but not all. (For the curious: the hangup was caused by rsync writing 600 GB to OS-1's 320 GB drive.. The destination drive was unmounted at the time, and rsync dutifully wrote directly to /media/usb_back; filling it to capacity... I have since, ammended my script :) Because the dual-boot MBR was prepared by OS-2, it is first on the grub list.. However, I want OS-1 to be the default OS to boot... From OS-1, I tried two methods to change the grub-menu's defaule OS. eg. Directly editing /etc/default/grub (then update-grub) Running 'Startup Manager' (then update-grub) Neither of these methods had any effect... so I started OS-2, and tried method 1... It worked! Why can I not change the grub menu from OS-1? .. or if it can be done, How?

  I was wondering which browser is the most secure today, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Safari on a Windows machine with the user running as a Power User/Administrator account. This is not a question about which browser is the best because its the most usable, but more of a question if asked for security, which browser is the most secure given an everyday user's experience (JavaScript, Flash, Ads, etc). Also, would the choice for most secure change if the user was running as a restricted user? To clarify, I'm looking for an answer that's based in research on potential and common exploits and how long it takes for critical problems to be patched.

• "Default approach" when creating a class from scratch: getters for everything, or limited access?

  Until recently I always had getters (and sometimes setters but not always) for all the fields in my class. It was my 'default': very automatic and I never doubted it. However recently some discussions on this site made me realize maybe it's not the best approach. When you create a class, you often don't know exactly how it's going to be used in the future by other classes. So in that sense, it's good to have getters and setter for all of the fields in the class. So other classes could use it in the future any way they want. Allowing this flexibility doesn't require you to over engineer anything, only to provide getters. However some would say it's better to limit the access to a class, and only allow access to certain fields, while other fields stay completely private. What is your 'default' approach when building a class from scratch? Do you make getters for all the fields? Or do you always choose selectively which fields to expose through a getter and which to keep completely private?

  Our application includes a default set of data. The default data includes coefficients and other factors that are unlikely to ever change but still need to be update-able by the user. Currently, the original default data is stored as a populated class within the application. Data updates are stored to an external XML file. This design allows us to include a "reset" feature to restore the original default data. Our rationale for not storing defaults externally [e.g. XML file] was to minimize the risk of being altered. The overall volume of data doesn't warrant a database. Is there a standard practice for storing "default" application data?

For OC4J: If you do not specify any transaction attributes for an EJB method then OC4J uses default transaction attributes. OC4J by default uses Required for CMP 2.0, NotSupported for MDBs and Supports for all other types of EJBs. (refer to official doc) For JBoss: default for all types EJB is Required. • What's the proper size of Default png's for iPad?

  I am confused by conflicting information. Most commonly I see these being the sizes quoted for the various Default images: Launch image Portrait Default-Portrait.png 768 x 1004 Launch image Portrait [email protected] 1536 x 2008 Launch image Landscape [email protected] 2048 x 1496 Launch image Landscape Default-Landscape.png 1024 x 748 Seemed like slightly unusual sizes, but I went along with it and dragged the images into the Launch images section in XCode. XCode however promptly puts little yellow triangles over these images and tell me that the sizes should be: 768x1024, 1536x2048, 1024x768 and 2048x1536 Oh and one last important bit. Do I really need to have all these images for submission to the app store? It's really not clear which images are required and which are just recommended. Mine is a Universal app btw if that makes any difference.
