• Free for personal use license?

  I'm trying desperately to find a software licensing model that would allow me to make my product completely open to the public domain for personal use/modification, but would be able to be sold commercially. I know such a beast exists, and I'm sure in many flavors. I just can't find it. ;( What I'm hoping for is a way to allow people the opportunity to benefit from the product in an "open source" fashion, while still allowing me to have a revenue on it to be able to continue development full time. • Options for non-native form inputs for the web?

  I'm wondering if there are any good non-native form inputs for web development? I am currently using the built in <input> controls. They work just fine, but for my application they are too big (especially on OS X). I am wondering if there are any libraries that I can drop in as replacements. I am especially interested in ones that: Are a close to native control behavior as possible. Support for tabbing, highlighting current textbox, pressing up/down in <select>, etc. Have something that replicates <select> Look good and are compact I am aware that you can use CSS for some styling, but it's pretty minimal and looks different depending on the browser. • Web Crawling Sites with Javascripts or web forms

  Hello everyone, I have a webcrawler application. It successfully crawled most common and simple sites. Now i ran into some types of websites wherein HTML documents are dynamically generated through FORMS or javascripts. I believe they can be crawled and I just don't know how. Now, these websites do not show the actual HTML page. I mean if I browse that page in IE or firefox, the HTML code does not match what's actually in the IE or firefox. These sites contain textboxes, checkboxes, etc... so I believe they are what they call "Web Forms". Actually I am not much familiar with web development so correct me if I'm wrong. My question is, does anyone in similar situation as I am now and have successfully solved these types of "challenges"? Does anyone know of a certain book or article regarding web crawling? Those that pertains to these advanced type of websites? Thanks.

• Problem with url_for and named routes in ActionMailer View: "Need controller and action"

  I'm attempting to provide a confirmation link in my user welcome email and I'm getting the following Rails error: Need controller and action! It makes a fuss about this line: <p>Please take a moment to activate your account by going to: <%= link_to confirm_user_url(:id => @user.confirmation_code) %>.</p> In my development.rb environment, I have the following line: config.action_mailer.default_url_options = { :host => "localhost", :port => 3000 } There's no problem with the @user variable. I've tested the email with things like @user.username and @user.confirmation_code. I'm only getting trouble with url_for and named routes like confirm_user_url. When I check my routes with rake routes, confirm_user shows up, so it's not an issue with the named route not existing. I can't seem to figure it out. What gives?

• What next in the career map for a Lead QA Engineer

  I am a Lead QA Engineer in a Software company and at a stage in my career wherein i need to plan my next move. Option 1: The very obvious move would be to stay as a QA Lead and eventually become a QA Manager. But i don't see very good prospects/future after that. Or am i wrong? Option 2: I love programming/coding, though i haven't spent a whole lot of time on that. So a direct move to becoming a Software Developer is not possible. Will moving to Test Automation eventually lead me to development. Even so, am i looking at step-down in pay and career-level. Option 3: Moving to Product Management. Is this even possible and if so what would be the best approach. Appreciate all your responses in advance. Thanks.

• Cure for puzzle piece programming habits?

  Even though I went to a decent CS school, I was still taught with the mentality of programming with puzzle pieces. By puzzle pieces I mean, looking up code segments at each step of the development process and adding them together as needed. Eventually gathering all of the pieces and having a properly working program. So as an example, if in my program the next step is to tokenize a string, I go to google and search "how do I tokenize a string in language". All instead of critically thinking about its implementation. I personally don't think its a very good way to program and I always seem to forget everything that I have searched for. So how can I get out of this puzzle piece mode of programmer that I was taught.

  I've noticed that as I progress in my career I my day to day activities require less and less actual hands on development. However, I feel that I need to stay current, both for my own personal desire as well as being able to guide a team to best practices etc. I'm finding it very hard to stay on top of the game because there are so many new frameworks, technologies and patterns coming out. Do I concentrate on a particular aspect or framework? Do I become a generalist or a specialist? What are others doing to maintain a certain level of proficiency and currentness (sic)?

• How do sprites work?

  How do sprites work? I've seen sprites from old school games like Super Mario Brothers, and wondered how they're animated to make a game. They're always presented as one big image map, so how are they used? For Mario (as an example) are there precalculated image co-ordinates that outline mario, and are swapped between various mario sprites to produce animation? Or are sprites pre "cut" during game initialization using precalculated images co-ordinates and stored in memory somewhere? Obviously I know nothing about game development.

What authentication mechanisms HTTP offer & what are their pros and cons? Why should one go for FORMS authentication? How to secure authentication or for that matter any transactions via HTTP? How to maintain state in HTTP? What are the downsides to maintaining state via cookie & what happens when browsers disable them?   My team has grown fairly quickly from 1 to 5 over the last year or so and are very interested in changing our development style from Waterfall to a more iterative approach like Scrum. We work for a University and specialize in CRUD web apps for internal customers who are always changing requirements along the way. So, my question is...How do we best implement Scrum techniques? Supplemental concerns: Is it recommended to quit Waterfall "cold turkey" in order to facilitate the transition or do you feel a progressive approach is more effective? In other words, pick and choose some scrum techniques to implement now and add others further down the road?

• Is there a way to automatically update the documentation in an R package?

  I used 'package.skeleton()' to generate .Rd help files a few months ago. I have edited these files, and I have also changed the functions, removed some functions, added others. Is there a function that automates updating the Rd files? update A nice package was just released called Rd2roxygen, it is described by the author Yihui Xie on his blog. As the name implies, this package allows one to retroactively insert documentation currently contained in .Rd into .R files. Sounds like a promising approach for both learning roxygen and for converting packages currently in development to R packages. Woo hoo. Thanks Yihui!

• Automated testing of a website for IE7 javascript errors?

  This week I decided to add a new element to a javascript array by copying a similar one from a previous line; unfortunately I forgot to remove the comma so the end result was something like var a = [1, 2, 3,]. The code went live late Friday afternoon just before everyone left for the week-end, and it completely broke everything in Internet Explorer 7 (and lower I assume) since it's such a great browser. Since there was no one to read emails (week-end) it went unnoticed for quite a while, and I really don't want something like this to happen again (especially in my code).. This is not the first of weird IE7 problems; I was wondering if there was a way to automatically test key pages looking for javascript or css errors, or really anything that IE8 would output in its new console in development tools. If there isn't, what do you usually do? You test the website after every change with all the browsers you support? (Something I'll do from now, at least for IE, if there is no way to run automated tests)

I read/heard about web farms, integration between different systems, load balancing ... etc. Therefore, I was wondering if there are ways for the individual developer to create an environment that simulates real world situations with minimal number of machines like: web farms & caching simulating many users accessing your website (Pressure tests?) • Django + WebKit = Broken pipe

  I'm running the Django 1.2 development server and I get these Broken Pipe error messages whenever I load a page from it with Chrome or Safari. My co-worker is getting the error as well when he loads a page from his dev server. We don't have these errors when using Opera or Firefox.   I can talk for hours about best-practice, source control, change management, feature tracking, development cycles and the lot, but most of what I've learnt or read seems to apply to nuts-and-bolts programming of compiled applications. You know, ASCII files that gets turned into 1s and 0s. How does one apply the same discipline and wisdom to working in environments that are point-and-click, config-centric. I'm thinking of CMSs and specifically, my current 9 to 5, SharePoint. Traditional practices of source control, dev-staging-production seem to break down since we're not working with code, and the live environment changes with user input. So to sum up a rather lengthy question, what works in a no-code environment?

  Sometimes, I came across certain web development framework which doesn't provide authentication feature as in Authenication ASP.NET I was wondering what is the security measure needs to be considered, when implementing "Remember Me" login feature, by hand coding? Here are the things I usually did. 1) Store the user name in cookie. The user name are not encrypted. 2) Store a secret key in cookie. The secret key is generated using one way function based on user name. The server will verify secret key against user name, to ensure this user name is not being changed. 3) Use HttpOnly in cookie. http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2008/08/protecting-your-cookies-httponly.html Any things else I could miss out, which could possible lead a security hole.

• Choosing a plotting library for web/browser application

  Hello, I am looking for a plotting/graphing library (mostly to do line plots) for my application. I have been looking at JavaScript APIs (like Google's) but I found them to be slowing down things at client side (I am plotting a quite large number of points). I also found that with client-side libraries, the performance was quite varied depending on the user's computer. With moving to a server-side library I would cut down on this variance, and would have more control over data flow (my data is in a MySQL database). I have then looked at some PHP-based plotting libraries, but a lot of them seem to be "forgotten" (no new version for years). I have been eying pChart, but it has not had an update in almost two years. First, what would you recommend: server-side or client-side approach? Second, what library would you recommend. Paid libraries are definitely an option, as I don't mind paying for quality software that would cut down on my development time. Thanks,

Some were closed as "not programming related" or were downvoted, others were answered and got upvoted. It seems that many developers think SEO was something "dirty" or belonged in the realm of spam. IMHO designing for search engines and practising SEO techniques adds important value to the final product like, for example, a good user interface. I took a little bit of Java in college, am 27 years old and have been network engineering for 4 years now. I have a mortgage and student loans so going back to school would be difficult. • How to force Weblogic to start deployments in active state (i.e. not just prepared)

  When I start a Weblogic instance with a deployed application, the deployment is sometimes left in prepared state, not in active state. I have to go to Weblogic Console and start the deployment manually, which is quite slow and annoying repetetive work. Since this is done on a development machine — sometimes 50 times a day, — there are no security implication as the server is only visible on the local network. Is there some way to have it always start the deployment active? Note that I'm not redeploying the application, I instead have it "constantly deployed" and stop/start the Weblogic instance using the scripts in bin directory.

The problem is We have to interact with the client directly to gather the requirement We have to design all HLD and LLD ,use cases and DB Diagrams ,that should staisfy the customers who keeping the high software insdutry standards In this do or die situation (Client gives us narrow dead line),we spend most of time with interacting client (only less time is available for development and testing,even sit out for 24 X 7 won't help us to finish our task) If task will not be finished with in the expected time frame ,that will trigger poor performance ration to our profile There are two important questions flashing in our mind : (1) Quit the job and do other business (2) Face the challenge : (if the option is to face the challenge ,What are all the tools should we follow to automate requirement gathering,testing,DB diagram,Code review and the rest.(We are working on ASP.NET 3.5 with SQL Server 2005).
