• Detecting if a browser's cache is full

  We've identified that full browser caches are the cause of a problem on our extranet. It only affects a small number of our users, but we'd like to alert them to the problem and give them some guidance on how to fix the problem for themselves. We'd like to use a similar system to the one which GMail uses. When it detects that your browser's cache is full, it shows a warning message telling users that their cache is full and that it may cause problems with GMail, along with a link to a Gmail Help page on clearing your browser's cache. Does anyone know if there any resources out there, or examples of how to use JavaScript to detect that the browser's cache is full? Thanks.

• What is it about Fibonacci numbers?

  Fibonacci numbers have become a popular introduction to recursion for Computer Science students and there's a strong argument that they persist within nature. For these reasons, many of us are familiar with them. They also exist within Computer Science elsewhere too; in surprisingly efficient data structures and algorithms based upon the sequence. There are two main examples that come to mind: Fibonacci heaps which have better amortized running time than binomial heaps. Fibonacci search which shares O(log N) running time with binary search on an ordered array. Is there some special property of these numbers that gives them an advantage over other numerical sequences? Is it a density quality? What other possible applications could they have? It seems strange to me as there are many natural number sequences that occur in other recursive problems, but I've never seen a Catalan heap.

• ASP.NET MVC submitting json array to controller as regular post request (nonajax)

  All the examples of json I can find online only show how to submit json arrays w/ the jquery command $.ajax(). I'm submitting some data from a custom user control as a json array. I was wondering if it's possible to submit a json array as a regular post request to the server (like a normal form) so the browser renders the page returned. Controller: [JsonFilter(Param = "record", JsonDataType = typeof(TitleViewModel))] public ActionResult SaveTitle(TitleViewModel record) { // save the title. return RedirectToAction("Index", new { titleId = tid }); } Javascript: function SaveTitle() { var titledata = GetData(); $.ajax({ url: "/Listing/SaveTitle", type: "POST", data: titledata, contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8", }); } Which is called from a save button. Everything works fine but the browser stays on the page after submitting. I was thinking of returning some kind of custom xml from the server and do javascript redirect but it seems like a very hacky way of doing things. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  Dear all. I was wondering if there are examples of situations where you would purposefully pass an argument by value in C. Let me rephrase. When do you purposefully use C's pass-by-value for large objects? Or, when do you care that the object argument is fully copied in a local variable? EDIT: Now that I think about it, if you can avoid pointers, then do. Nowadays, "deep" copying is possible for mostly everything in small apps, and shallow copying is more prone to pointer bugs. Maybe.

• Dreamweaver regular expression substitution followed by number

  Hi. I'm using Dreamweaver to update copyright dates across my site. I want to preserve the existing spacing (or lack thereof) between years. Examples: © 2002-2008 should update to © 2002-2009 © 2003 - 2008 should update to © 2003 - 2009 This is the regular expression I'm using to accomplish this in Dreamweaver's find & replace function Find: ©\s*(\d{4}\s*-\s*)\d{3}[^9] Replace: © $1 2009 Here's the PROBLEM: This expression works, but has that that extra space between the hyphen and 2009. If I write the replace expression without the space, as © $12009 then dreamweaver looks for the 12,009th substitution in the find expression, and, not finding one, prints $12009. Any ideas?

• Decoupling into DAL and BLL - my concerns.

  Hi, In many posts concerning this topic I come across very simple examples that do not answer my question. Let's say a have a document table and user table. In DAL written in ADO.NET i have a method to retries all documents for some criteria. Now I the UI I have a case where I need to show this list along with the names of the creator. Up to know I have it done with one method in DAL containig JOIN statement. However eveytime I have such a complex method i have to do custom mapping to some object that doesn't mark 1:1 to DB. Should it be put into another layer ? If so then I will have to resing from join query for iteration through results and querying each document author. . . which doen't make sense... (performance) what is the best approach for such scenarios ?

• GWT on Python App Engine

  Hi, I have a python app engine code (matured backend) - and we are now planning to have a front end for that code. I was wondering whether it is possible to implement GWT as the front end. Even though Alex Martelli in this post [1] mentions it is not possible, a comment to that post suggests that it is indeed possible using rpc over json for GWT. I was unable to understand how this is possible. In app.yaml file, we have to specify the language to be python, right? In that case, how can it compile GWT based on JAVA? Are there any examples on anyone doing that? Can someone help me out? It would be extremely helpful. • Creating a Mac OS application that interacts with all text fields

  What would be the first step to creating an application for Mac OS X that would take user interaction from any text field in the system? A couple examples of apps that do this are TextExpander and Typinator. What I want to do would be using similar functions to access Text fields throughout the computer during user input to give other additional options, I'm just not sure where to even start in Xcode and with what type of project to use. • Should I use a metaclass, class decorator, or override the __new__ method?

  Here is my problem. I want the following class to have a bunch of property attributes. I could either write them all out like foo and bar, or based on some other examples I've seen, it looks like I could use a class decorator, a metaclass, or override the __new__ method to set the properties automagically. • Do I need a view controller for MVVM-light in Silverlight?

  I have the following question regarding MVVM light: what "drives" the UI? I see I can have a ViewModel per View I am showing; the ViewLocator handles all the ViewModels (for caching as I understand). But what is driving the UI? If I have a Command defined in my ViewModel that says "ShowDetail"; do I have to write the code for displaying this View inside the ViewModel? Are there any examples of this? Thanks!

• Google Maps API v3... non-mobile?

  I'm trying to make a Google Maps widget for my website but all of the examples are for full-screen mobile devices. The tutorials work when I copy paste them exactly as shown but they don't seem to work when I want them to only occupy a portion of the page. From what I've read, the v3 is the best API yet (for what I need) because of its speed and compatibility with mobile devices. I plan to make a widget very similar to the MarkerClusterer example from the demo gallery but I can't get it working. Is this a common issue? I know I'm being vague but I would appreciate some help. • Cursors vs Procedures in SQL

  So, I just learned about CURSORS but still don't exactly grasp them. What is the difference between a cursor and procedure or even a function? So far from the various examples (DECLARE CURSOR ... SELECT ... FROM ...) It seems at most its a variable to hold a query. Is the data real time, or a snapshot of when the cursor was declared? i.e. I have a table with one row and one col with a value of 2. I do DECLARE CURSOR ... SELECT * FROM table1 I then insert a new row with a value of 3. When I run the cursor, would I Just get the one row from before the cursor was declared, or both rows? Thanks

  Hi, I'm using Delphi7 and i need a solution to a big problem.Can someone provide me a faster way for searching through files and folders than using findnext and findfirst? because i also process the data for each file/folder (creation date/author/size/etc) and it takes a lot of time...I've searched a lot under WinApi but probably I haven't see the best function in order to accomplish this. • How can I limit the number of connections to an mssql server from my tomcat deployed java applicatio

  Hi, I have an application that is deployed on tomcat on server A and sends queries to a huge variety of mssql databases on an server B. I am concerned that my application could overload this mssql database server and would like some way to preventing it making requests to connect to any database on that server if some arbitrary number of connections were already in existence and unclosed. I am looking at using connection pooling but am under the impression that this will only pool connections to a specific database on the mssql server, I want to control the total of these combined connections that will occur to many different databases (incidentally I can only find out the names of individual db's dynamically as they change day to day). Will connection pooling take care of this for me, are am I looking at this from the wrong perspective? I have no access to the configuration of the mssql server.   The documentation is pretty confusing on this one: The implementation of accessor methods you write for subclasses of NSManagedObject is typically different from those you write for other classes. If you do not provide custom instance variables, you retrieve property values from and save values into the internal store using primitive accessor methods. You must ensure that you invoke the relevant access and change notification methods (willAccessValueForKey:, didAccessValueForKey:, willChangeValueForKey:, didChangeValueForKey:, willChangeValueForKey:withSetMutation:usingObjects:, and didChangeValueForKey:withSetMutation:usingObjects:). NSManagedObject disables automatic key-value observing (KVO, see Key-Value Observing Programming Guide) change notifications, and the primitive accessor methods do not invoke the access and change notification methods. In accessor methods for properties that are not defined in the entity model, you can either enable automatic change notifications or invoke the appropriate change notification methods. • Adding image to navigation bar

  I'd like an image to take up all of a navigation bar. This is the navigation that comes with a navigation based app. It appears on the RootViewController with the accompanying UITableView. I've seen some examples of how this might work. Set navigation bar title: UIImage *image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"TableviewCellLightBlue.png"]; UIImageView *imageView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage:image]; [self.navigationController.navigationBar.topItem setTitleView:imageView]; The problem there is it only covers the title rather than the entire navigation bar. There is also this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9254241#9254241. Towards the end, the solution looks to use a tab bar, which I'm not using. It is that complicated to set a navigation bar background? Is there some other simpler technique? I'd like to have a background for the navigation and still be able to use title text.

I need a tool that will check for errors such as use of reserved words as identifiers trailing semi-colon, e.g. var obj = { a: 1, b, 2, } JSLint seems like a perfect candidate, but the problem is that it is too strict, because it also checks for various coding patterns which are (arguably) bad style, but do not actually generate errors in a browser. Examples of such issues include Disallow ++ and -- and Allow one var statement per function If possible, I would like the errors to fail the build, and I would like the other rules to only print warnings (or disable them completely). • Where is this backward_warning.h #warning coming from?

  Without looking through every single source file in my XCode project, is there a way to find out which #include is triggering the following warning? #warning This file includes at least one deprecated or antiquated header. Please consider using one of the 32 headers found in section 17.4.1.2 of the C++ standard. Examples include substituting the <X> header for the <X.h> header for C++ includes, or <iostream> instead of the deprecated header <iostream.h>. To disable this warning use -Wno-deprecated. Clicking on the error in XCode just opens the backward_warning.h file, which is totally useless. I know what the warning means, I know how to fix it (when I see the file in question and can look at its #includes)... but I just don't know how to find the file causing the error!

• What benefits can Java developer have from moving to a *NIX platform?

  Hi everyone, A friend of mine is a Java developer, who's using *NIX for ages. He claims that *NIX is for real Java geeks, whereas WIN is for dummies (and I'm one of them, according to him) and girls. When I ask him to argue his position, and explain, what's so good for Java developer on *NIX, he starts talking about console, wget, curl and grep. But sorry, wget and curl analogues exist for the WIN platform as well. As for the console - I'm using FAR Commander, and have access to the command line when I need. Moreover, even if I decide moving to *NIX, I will certainly use Netbeans or Eclipse on it, so there will be no big difference. Guys, who use Java on *NIX, could you please give me some real killer examples, when *NIX (any util or technique) dramatically increases Java development productivity (in the way the hints are given in "The Pragmatic Programmer"), or, which is also important, gives more fun from the process.   Are there examples of how to pass a list of key_names to Model.get_or_insert() ? My Problem: With a method of ParentLayer I want to make the children.
