  • "Give with Bing" - Help raise money for Sports relief while searching for whatever you want

    - by Testas
While Sport Relief drives fundraising by challenging people to do physical activities such as running a mile, we’re introducing the ‘Bing Search Mile,’ which gives people the ability to search using Bing and raise money for charity. For every 10 searches made, Bing.com will donate 5p to Sport Relief 2010, enabling you, and your friends and family, to raise money just by searching with Bing until the end of March. With the average mile taking about 10 minutes to run, in the same time, you can make up to 150 searches online - that’s 75p raised for a good cause per ‘search mile’. And while you’re at it,  why not step it up a gear and aim to complete a ‘Search Mile’ each day or even a ‘Search Marathon’ over the 5 week campaign with your colleagues, friends and family? How to get involved: 1.      Visit GiveWithBing.com and download the Official Sport Relief Bing Counter. Once downloaded, the Sport Relief counter will count all the searches you do on Bing from that point on.  2.      Now that you’re registered (and signed in), invite your friends, family, colleagues or classmates to join in the fundraising with you – GiveWithBing.com automatically generates an email explaining how it works for you to send them – the more people who search with you, the more money you raise. People can also register a school 3.      Run your ‘search mile’ every day and watch how your searches turn into life-changing cash for charity, with every 10 searches equalling 5p for Sport Relief. You can check your progress by visiting your individual page (more info here).  This is such a positive initiative and I challenge everyone in the UK to invite their key contacts to be part of Give with Bing.   Chris

  • Friendly URLs: is there a max length for search engines?

    - by Olivier Pons
People from stackoverflow have been working closely with google team to help them make the panda algorithm more efficient, so I guess they've learned a lot from the google team. Thus they may have done very clever friendly URLs to maximize the page rank. I've seen from time to time very long URLs (can't find where) in stackoverflow, but after a certain "amount" of character there were only numbers, kind of "ok passed this length, SEOs will ignore this so let's put only numbers". I've done a huge work on my framework to make very friendly URLs, and my website can come up with URLs like: http://www.mysite.fr/recherche/region/provence-alpes-cote-d-azur/departement/bouches-du-rhone/categorie-de-metiers/paramedical/ It's very long and I'm wondering if the previous URL won't be mixed with, say, this one: http://www.mysite.fr/recherche/region/provence-alpes-cote-d-azur/departement/bouches-du-rhone/categorie-de-metiers/art/

  • Find Content Related Images in Internet Explorer 8

    - by Asian Angel
Do you want an easy way to find images related to news stories or articles when browsing in Internet Explorer? Then you will definitely want to have a look at the Bing Image Search accelerator. Bing Image Search in Action Two simple steps will have the new accelerator installed: click Add to Internet Explorer to start the process and confirm the installation when the secondary window appears. For the first of our two examples we chose the “Deepwater Horizon rig”. To find images highlight the word/name that you are interested in, and select Bing Image Search in the context menu. Hovering your mouse over the context menu listing will present a “top” image in a popup window… Or if you prefer to view multiple images click on the context menu listing. A Bing image search for the highlighted word/name will be opened in a new tab. Our second example was the Guatemalan volcano “Pacaya”. As before we first viewed the popup window image… Followed by a full image search in a new tab. The accelerator makes it quick and easy to find additional images when needed. Conclusion The Bing Image Search accelerator makes it a simple task to find additional images related to what you are reading or looking at while browsing. • How Do I Search For Struct Items In A Vector? [migrated]

    - by Vladimir Marenus
I'm attempting to create an inventory system using a vector implementation, but I seem to be having some troubles. I'm running into issues using a struct I made. NOTE: This isn't actually in a game code, this is a separate Solution I am using to test my knowledge of vectors and structs! struct aItem { string itemName; int damage; }; int main() { aItem healingPotion; healingPotion.itemName = "Healing Potion"; healingPotion.damage= 6; aItem fireballPotion; fireballPotion.itemName = "Potion of Fiery Balls"; fireballPotion.damage = -2; vector<aItem> inventory; inventory.push_back(healingPotion); inventory.push_back(healingPotion); inventory.push_back(healingPotion); inventory.push_back(fireballPotion); if(find(inventory.begin(), inventory.end(), fireballPotion) != inventory.end()) { cout << "Found"; } system("PAUSE"); return 0; } The preceeding code gives me the following error: 1c:\program files (x86)\microsoft visual studio 11.0\vc\include\xutility(3186): error C2678: binary '==' : no operator found which takes a left-hand operand of type 'aItem' (or there is no acceptable conversion) There is more to the error, if you need it please let me know. I bet it's something small and silly, but I've been thumping at it for over two hours. Thanks in advance!

  • Is it bad idea to use flag variable to search MAX element in array?

    - by Boris Treukhov
Over my programming career I formed a habit to introduce a flag variable that indicates that the first comparison has occured, just like Msft does in its linq Max() extension method implementation public static int Max(this IEnumerable<int> source) { if (source == null) { throw Error.ArgumentNull("source"); } int num = 0; bool flag = false; foreach (int num2 in source) { if (flag) { if (num2 > num) { num = num2; } } else { num = num2; flag = true; } } if (!flag) { throw Error.NoElements(); } return num; } However I have met some heretics lately, who implement this by just starting with the first element and assigning it to result, and oh no - it turned out that STL and Java authors have preferred the latter method. Java: public static <T extends Object & Comparable<? super T>> T max(Collection<? extends T> coll) { Iterator<? extends T> i = coll.iterator(); T candidate = i.next(); while (i.hasNext()) { T next = i.next(); if (next.compareTo(candidate) > 0) candidate = next; } return candidate; } STL: template<class _FwdIt> inline _FwdIt _Max_element(_FwdIt _First, _FwdIt _Last) { // find largest element, using operator< _FwdIt _Found = _First; if (_First != _Last) for (; ++_First != _Last; ) if (_DEBUG_LT(*_Found, *_First)) _Found = _First; return (_Found); } Are there any preferences between one method or another? Are there any historical reasons for this? Is one method more dangerous than another?

  • How to use will_paginate with a nested resource in Rails?

    - by Sue Petersen
I'm new to Rails, and I'm having major trouble getting will_paginate to work with a nested resource. I have two models, Statement and Invoice. will_paginate is working on Statement, but I can't get it to work on Invoice. I know I'd doing something silly, but I can't figure it out and the examples I've found on google won't work for me. statement.rb class Statement < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :invoices def self.search(search, page) paginate :per_page => 19, :page => page, :conditions => ['company like ?', "%#{search}%"], :order => 'date_due DESC, company, supplier' end end statements_controller.rb <irrelevant code clipped for readability> def index #taken from the RAILSCAST 51, will_paginate podcast @statements = Statement.search(params[:search], params[:page]) end I call this in the view like so, and it works: <%= will_paginate @statements %> But I can't figure out how to get it to work for Invoices: invoice.rb class Invoice < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :statement def self.search(search, page) paginate :per_page => 19, :page => page, :conditions => ['company like ?', "%#{search}%"], :order => 'employee' end end invoices_controller.rb class InvoicesController < ApplicationController before_filter :find_statement #TODO I can't get will_paginate to work w a nested resource def index #taken from the RAILSCAST 51, will_paginate podcast @invoices = Invoice.search(params[:search], params[:page]) end def find_statement @statement_id = params[:statement_id] return(redirect_to(statements_url)) unless @statement_id @statement = Statement.find(@statement_id) end end And I try to call it like this: <%= will_paginate (@invoices) % The most common error message, as I play with this, is: "The @statements variable appears to be empty. Did you forget to pass the collection object for will_paginate?" I don't have a clue what the problem is, or how to fix it. Thanks for any help and guidance!

  • AS3 httpservice - pass arguments to event handlers by reference

    - by Shawn Simon
    I have this code: var service:HTTPService = new HTTPService(); if (search.Location && search.Location.length > 0 && chkLocalSearch.selected) { service.url = 'http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/services/search/local'; service.request.q = search.Keyword; service.request.near = search.Location; } else { service.url = 'http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/services/search/web'; service.request.q = search.Keyword + " " + search.Location; } service.request.v = '1.0'; service.resultFormat = 'text'; service.addEventListener(ResultEvent.RESULT, onServerResponse); service.send(); I want to pass the search object to the result method (onServerResponse) but if I do it in a closure it gets passed by value. Is there anyway to do it by reference without searching through my array of search objects for the value returned in the result? Sorry, this is simple but it's been a long day...

  • Can third party content on sub-domains harm the main site's search rankings?

    - by dror
I have a site that is a "portal" or "directory" for service providers. We opened every service provider's own page on our site, but now we get a lot of applications from those providers that want sites from their own. We want to make a full site for every service provider, but rather put them on sub domain URLs. (They don’t mind, it's OK for them.) So, my site is www.exaple.com Their site will be: provider.example.com Now I have two questions: Can the content on the provider sites harm my site in SEO? If one from those sub domains is punished by Google because the owner does "black hat SEO", how it will affect the rood domain? Can it make the root domain get punished?

  • Multiple 301 redirects, do search engines/viewers see them all?

    - by Karim
I've put in place lots of different 301 rules to deal with numerous url changes. And for certain URLS there are 3-4 different 301 redirects landing the visitors to the new URL. I heard that 301 loses pagerank/linkjuice. ALl the 301 are onsite for the same domain. With a mix of php 301s and htaccess 301s. so for instance articles/news.php?id=2 --- articles/blog.php?id=2 [filename change] articles/* --- /* [subdir to root] /blog.php?id=2 --- /title-of-post [mod rewrite url change] so if you were to visit /articles/news.php?id=2 there will be two 301 redirects until you land on the /yellow-wellington-boots/, my question is does google see the intermediate redirects, or just the final page the 301's redirect to.

  • Flash and Google Maps - Only Last Icon showing

    - by Peter
I have a simple Map and geocoding sample in Flash using CS4 The problem is simple - I can retrieve a short list from the google search api, but when I try to generate the icons on the map using a loop, only the last icon is displayed. (ignore the house icon, it is generated earlier) I feel I am missing something or made a stupid AS3 mistake (like treating it as if it was c#) - or even a stupid wood-for-the-trees mistake. The problem is in the last line of the code. I have added all my code just in case somebody else can find a use for it - lord knows it took me a great while to figure this out :) It runs here (also, if anybody has an idea why the icon is slightly in the wrong place on render, but corrects if you move the map - please let me know) Any help would be great. • jQuery $.getJSON - How do I parse a flickr.photos.search REST API call?

    - by Chad
Trying to adapt the $.getJSON Flickr example: $.getJSON("http://api.flickr.com/services/feeds/photos_public.gne?tags=cat&tagmode=any&format=json&jsoncallback=?", function(data){ $.each(data.items, function(i,item){ $("<img/>").attr("src", item.media.m).appendTo("#images"); if ( i == 3 ) return false; }); }); to read from the flickr.photos.search REST API method, but the JSON response is different for this call. Click here to see the JSON response. This is what I've done so far: var url = "http://api.flickr.com/services/rest/?method=flickr.photos.search&api_key=9322c53dde3b36bda33f79c16bb99104&tags=yokota+air+base&safe_search=1&per_page=20"; var src; $.getJSON(url + "&format=json&jsoncallback=?", function(data){ $.each(data.photos, function(i,item){ src = "http://farm"+ item.photo.farm +".static.flickr.com/"+ item.photo.server +"/"+ item.photo.id +"_"+ item.photo.secret +"_m.jpg"; $("<img/>").attr("src", src).appendTo("#images"); if ( i == 3 ) return false; }); }); I guess I'm not building the image src correctly. Couldn't find any documentation on how to build the image src, based on what the JSON response is. How do you parse a flickr.photos.search REST API call?

  • Will many links to the same page without nofollow penalize the host site in the search engine rankings?

    - by Evgeny
May be a silly question, but I'll give it a shot :). On my forum app I would like to allow users with sufficiently high reputation display links to their home pages under every post - without the nofollow attribute (while lower rep users will have the nofollow) I am happy to help the site contributors improve rankings of their own, but not sure if this can actually deteriorate the rank of the host (the site that hosts those links) - as potentially the same link to the user's home page may be peppered in the pages of the host. What do you think? Thanks.

  • How to preserve object identity across different VMs

    - by wheleph
To be specific let me illustrate the question with Spring http-remoting example. Suppose we have such implementation of a simple interface: public SearchServiceImpl implements SearchService { public SearchJdo processSearch(SearchJdo search) { search.name = "a funky name"; return search; } } SearchJdo is itself a simple POJO. Now when we call the method from a client through http-remoting we'll get: public class HTTPClient { public static void main(final String[] arguments) { final ApplicationContext context = new ClassPathXmlApplicationContext( "spring-http-client-config.xml"); final SearchService searchService = (SearchService) context.getBean("searchService"); SearchJdo search = new SearchJdo(); search.name = "myName"; // this method actually returns the same object it gets as an argument SearchJdo search2 = searchService.processSearch(search); System.out.println(search == search2); // prints "false" } } The problem is that the search objects are different because of serializaton although from logical prospective they are the same. The question is whether there are some technique that allows to support or emulate object identity across VMs.

  • A question mark within a @PathVariable in Spring MVC?

    - by sp00m
Within the @Controller of a search engine: @RequestMapping(value = "/search/{query}", method = RequestMethod.GET) public String search(@PathVariable String query) {} If a user wants to search /search/w?rld (wich should match world, warld, whrld, etc.), the variable query equals w, because of the question mark which indicated a GET var. I tried "/search/{query:.+}", but still doesn't work. Any idea how to solve that problem?

I need around a week to transition a heavily data-driven website from one back end to another. During that time I do plan to attempt to keep some pages live, but they won't all work well or look brilliant. Some pages won't work at all. What is the best way to ensure I don't scare Google? Should I hide everything from robots.txt, or mark everything that doesn't work as "503", or are there other things that I should be considering?

  • Have there been attempts to make object containers that search for valid programs by auto wiring compatible components?

    - by Aaron Anodide
I hope this post isn't too "Fringe" - I'm sure someone will just kill it if it is :) Three things made me want to reach out about this now: Decoupling is so in the forefront of design. TDD inspires the idea that it doesn't matter how a program comes to exist as long as it works. Seeing how often the adapter pattern is applied to achieve (1). I'm almost sure this has been tried from a memory of reading about it around the year 2000 or so. If I had to guess, it was maybe about and earlier version of the Java Spring framework. At this time we were not so far from days when the belief was that computer programs could exhibit useful emergent behavior. I think the article said it didn't work, but it didn't say it was impossible. I wonder if since then it has been deemed impossible or simply an illusion due to a false assumption of similarity between a brain and a CPU. I know this illusion existed because I had an internship in 1996 where I programmed neural nets that were supposedly going to exhibit "brain damage". STILL, after all that, I'm sitting around this morning and not able to shake the idea that it should be possible to have a method of programming to allow autonomous components to find each other, attempt to collaborate and their outputs evaluated against a set desired results.

  • Solr : how do i index and search several fields?

    - by sbrattla
Hi, I've set up my first 'installation' of Solr, where each index (document) represents a musical work (with properties like number (int), title (string), version (string), composers (string) and keywords (string)). I've set the field 'title' as the default search field. However, what do I do when I would like to do a query on all fields? I'd like to give users the opportunity to search in all fields, and as far as I've understood there is at least two options for this: (1) Specify which fields the query should be made against. (2) Set up the Solr configuration with copyfields, so that values added to each of the fields will be copied to a 'catch-all'-like field which can be used for searching. However, in this case, i am uncertain how things would turn out when i take into consideration that the data types are not all the same for the various fields (the various fields will to a lesser og greater degree go through filters, but as copyfield values are taken from their original fields before the values have been run through their original fields' filters, i would have to apply one single filter to all values on the copyfield. This, again, would result in integers being 'filtered' just as strings would). Is this a case where i should use copyfields? At first glance, it seems a bit more 'flexible' to rather just search on all fields. However, maybe there's a cost? All feedback appreciated! Thanks!

I'm currently indexing like this Public Function AddIndex(ByVal searchableEvent As [Event]) As Boolean Implements ILuceneService.AddIndex Dim writer As New IndexWriter(luceneDirectory, New StandardAnalyzer(), False) Dim doc As Document = New Document doc.Add(New Field("id", searchableEvent.ID, Field.Store.YES, Field.Index.UN_TOKENIZED)) doc.Add(New Field("fullText", FullTextBuilder(searchableEvent), Field.Store.YES, Field.Index.TOKENIZED)) doc.Add(New Field("user", If(searchableEvent.User.UserName = Nothing, "User" & searchableEvent.User.ID, searchableEvent.User.UserName), Field.Store.YES, Field.Index.TOKENIZED)) doc.Add(New Field("title", searchableEvent.Title, Field.Store.YES, Field.Index.TOKENIZED)) doc.Add(New Field("location", searchableEvent.Location.Name, Field.Store.YES, Field.Index.TOKENIZED)) doc.Add(New Field("date", searchableEvent.EventDate, Field.Store.YES, Field.Index.UN_TOKENIZED)) writer.AddDocument(doc) writer.Optimize() writer.Close() Return True End Function Notice how I have a "date" index that stores the event date. My search then looks like this ''# code omitted Dim reader As IndexReader = IndexReader.Open(luceneDirectory) Dim searcher As IndexSearcher = New IndexSearcher(reader) Dim parser As QueryParser = New QueryParser("fullText", New StandardAnalyzer()) Dim query As Query = parser.Parse(q.ToLower) ''# We're using 10,000 as the maximum number of results to return ''# because I have a feeling that we'll never reach that full amount ''# anyways. And if we do, who in their right mind is going to page ''# through all of the results? Dim topDocs As TopDocs = searcher.Search(query, Nothing, 10000) Dim doc As Document = Nothing ''# loop through the topDocs and grab the appropriate 10 results based ''# on the submitted page number While i <= last AndAlso i < topDocs.totalHits doc = searcher.Doc(topDocs.scoreDocs(i).doc) IDList.Add(doc.[Get]("id")) i += 1 End While ''# code omitted I did try the following, but it was to no avail (threw a NullReferenceException). While i <= last AndAlso i < topDocs.totalHits If Date.Parse(doc.[Get]("date")) >= Date.Today Then doc = searcher.Doc(topDocs.scoreDocs(i).doc) IDList.Add(doc.[Get]("id")) i += 1 End If End While I also found the following documentation, but I can't make heads or tails of it http://lucene.apache.org/java/1_4_3/api/org/apache/lucene/search/DateFilter.html

  • SharePoint Search Problem: The crawler could not communicate with the server.

    - by Clara Oscura
This one was not easy to solve ... Error: The crawler could not communicate with the server. Check that the server is available and that the firewall access is configured. Context: Some pages were not crawled (giving the above error) and, what is worse, all the sub content of that site was not crawled either! (the pages were the homepages of the site) Solution:The pages that could not be crawled due to this error contained a custom web part. This web part used default credentials for a given action. During crawling, the SP_Search account tried to perform this action but did not have the appropriate rights. This gave an error that stopped the crawling for the whole site. This blog helped me: http://patricklamber.blogspot.com/2010/04/why-might-moss-crawler-not-working.html
