• Browser window size statistics?

  Hey all, I was wondering, are there any statistics available on what size users have their browser set to nowadays? I know the screen resolutions (we have analytics, which shows those as well) but I doubt a lot of people with 1280*xxx and higher still browse full-screen though. My boss is determined to keep our website 900px wide though, because that way people with 1800*xxx resolutions can have two browser windows next to eachother without having to scroll horizontally. I have never seen anyone browse with two adjacent browser windows like that except here at my current job, so I'm kind of doubting whether this is the best decision or just his personal preference. Anyone that can help out here?

• Pls help Installation has ruined laptop

  Hi this was my time using Linux. So I installed Ubuntu from Windows 7 via USB. After booting into Ubuntu I proceeded to do a full install over windows. This seemed to be going fine but at the point where I was to sign up to Ubuntu one it froze. After awhile maybe 30 mins I realised nothing was going to happen, so I restarted. Now after the bios options bit passes all I get is a prompt flashing at the top left of a black screen. I have tried booting up via USB option but nothing happens, I have tried this 6 or 7 times with fresh usb each time and also with lubuntu. I'm not sure if I have correctly made a live usb obviously I believe I have been but being new I can't guarantee this. Can anyone help me get some functional out of my laptop. Thanks Ben

  I find few conflicts on people's reactions about adding noindex on paginations. What does pro webmasters has to say about this? I am planning to add noindex meta for all paginations with a hope to increase website value, so I would like some pro's feedback on this. e.g. here: http://w3tut.org/blog 3 posts' first few paragraphs are displayed and meta is taken from first post from that page, which will cause duplicate meta issue. Also, 3 posts in a page could be unrelated to each other as well. Is it a good idea to add noindex for these pages, so full article posts get more value?

  Below are the release notes from this week's deployment. Improvements and Bug Fixes Updated the Source browsing to fixed width and full browser height. The source browsing experience now defaults to the fixed width layout. But, if you really want to take advantage of that 30" monitor you have on your desk, you can expand the source to fill the browser window. Just click on the little plus icon in the upper right. • ban an IP temporarily after x-many incorrect password attempts

  My new web server got hacked (sigh). I have physical access to my machine (in the near future). It seems like the only changes was a new user account and a borked sudoers file. It seems as though the password was discovered by dictionary searching (I didn't pick it). After I fix these problems (or do a full reinstall?) I want to add a mechanism to ban an IP (for maybe 24 hours or some time limit) after getting the password wrong x number of times, but I'm not a unix sysadmin or anything, so I'm not really sure where to get started. The machine is running Lucid Lynx, from an Ubuntu minimal installation. Thanks,I appreciate your help guys. Hopefully this is the right place for this question.

• LaTeX-like display programming environment

  I used to be a hobbyist programmer, but now I'm also a fairly experienced physicist and find myself programming to solve certain problems quite a lot. In physics, we use variables with superscripts, subscripts, italics, underlines, etc etc. To bridge this gap to the computer we usually use LaTeX. Now, I generally use MATLAB for handling any data and such, and find it very irritating that I can't basically use LaTeX for variable names. Something as simple as sy has to be named either sigma_y or some descriptive name like peak_height_error. I don't necessarily want full on workable LaTeX in my code, but I do want to be able to use greek letters and super/sub-scripts at the very least. Does this exist?

• Should I block bots from my site and why?

  My logs are full of bot visitors, often from Eastern Europe and China. The bots are identified as Ahrefs, Seznam, LSSRocketCrawler, Yandex, Sogou and so on. Should I block these bots from my site and why? Which ones have a legitimate purpose in increasing traffic to my site? Many of them are SEO. I have to say I see less traffic if anything since the bots have arrived in large numbers. It would not be too hard to block these since they all admit in their User Agent that they are bots.

• Does a programmer really need college?

  I am currently a junior in college, however I have had multiple jobs programming since high school. Currently I work programming at a company part time using many different languages that I have learned the past few years. I recently sat down with a advisor and discovered with the classes I have left to take, I will learn next to nothing in them, as I already know the concepts and how to apply them for all the classes. My current job has offered me a full time position and I have had other companies email me as well. My question is if I know for a fact that I cannot learn more at college, is there even a point in staying? I know for a fact I could spend my time in more productive ways programming and working then what I am doing in school. Do you think to be looked at seriously as a programmer you need a degree?

• Simple Little Registry Editor - New Release

  I have posted a new release of the Simple Little Registry Editor found in Windows CE: Simple Little Registry Editor.  This release fixes a problem with writing DWORD values when the most significant bit is set.  The application uses RegistryKey.SetValue.  There seems to be a problem with how the .NET CompactFramework (and the full framework) handle the second argument during the call which causes an exception.   I have been chosen as one of the 12 final people for a full out scholarship to the college of my choice and it is paid for by a software company so long as I major in Computer Science.I have already had to write an essay on what has most shaped my life (Programming being it) and that was the basis for the interview decision. I now have to go in for an interview with people from the company for the final decision in a week. I do believe I have a good foundation in computer science already. I have roughly 4 years of programming experience in Java, C++, ASM and your typical web stuff. I have done everything from making my own CMS for my site to an assembler to network file transfer applications. That said what types of questions should I expect in an interview of this sort? Do I seem reasonably knowledgeable?

• VirtualBox Share permissions

  at the moment i'm running ubuntu server 12.04 on top of a virtual box running as service in M$ w7x64, I've configured the shares on fstab with E /media/E vboxsf auto,rw,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 the mount is ok drwxrwxrwx 1 knoker knoker 16384 Sep 1 20:02 E but i cant change the permissions inside of /media/E ,chmod runs but doesn't do nothing. on a specific case /media/E/Docs/Downloads i have dr-xr-xr-x 1 knoker knoker 163840 Sep 1 19:30 Downloads and since i cant seem to be able to change from linux i tried it on the windows, and all users listed have full control... • Smooth Camera Rotation around 90 degrees

  I'm developing a third person 3D platformer in XNA. My problem is when I try to rotate the camera around the player. I would like to rotate (and animate) the camera 90 degrees around the player. So the camera should rotate until it has reached 90 degrees from the starting position. I cannot figure out how to keep track of the rotation, and when the rotation has made the full 90 degrees. Currently my cameras update: public void Update(Vector3 playerPosition) { if (rotateCamera) { position = Vector3.Transform(position - playerPosition, Matrix.CreateRotationY(0.1f)) + playerPosition; } this.viewMatrix = Matrix.CreateLookAt(position, playerPosition, Vector3.Up); } The initial position of the camera is set in the constructor. • How to get back Applications menu?

  I'm using 12.04, classic desktop without effects. Once the indicator-applet-complete (right part of the top panel) had disappeared. I found how to fix it with Alt-Win-RightMouseClick on the panel, then "Add to the Panel", where choose "Indicator Applet Complete" to add. Now, the left part of the top panel (Applications Menu) has disappeared! If I do Alt-Win-RightMouseClick on the panel, I can add only individual menu sections like Internet, Office, Settings etc. How to get back the full menu?
