  • How can I enable Javascript in Firefox, or what is stopping it from being enabled?

    XP3 Firefox 3.6.9 The Superuser and other sites state that I don't have Javascript enabled. I also am unable to view certain videos on the web and they say that I must have Javascript enabled. I have searched the net and followed instructions as to enable this, but still no joy. Can anyone point me to a solution?   • Common causes of slow performing jQuery and how to optimize the code?

    Hello, This might be a bit of a vague or general question, but I figure it might be able to serve as a good resource for other jQuery-ers. I'm interested in common causes of slow running jQuery and how to optimize these cases. We have a good amount of jQuery/JavaScript performing actions on our page... and performance can really suffer with a large number off elements. What are some obvious performance pitfalls you know of with jQuery? What are some general optimizations a jQuery-er can do to squeeze every last bit of performance out of his/her scripts? One example: a developer may use a selector to access an element that is slower than some other way. Thanks

    i have to permament redirect some old urls in nginx. the old urls are old-style php urls including a parameter for loading content. they look like this: http://www.foo.com/index.php?site=foo http://www.foo.com/index.php?site=bar i want to redirect them to other urls like: http://www.foo.com/news http://www.foo.com/gallery any advice on how i can achieve this? my tries failed. thanks in advance!

    In an application I'm developing, I have the need to handle a socket-timeout differently from a general socket exception. The problem is that many different issues result in a SocketException and I need to know what the cause was. There is no inner exception reported, so the only information I have to work with is the message: "A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond" This question has a general and specific part: is it acceptable to write conditional logic based upon the textual representation of an exception? Is there a way to avoid needing exception handling? Example code below... try { IPEndPoint endPoint = null; client.Client.ReceiveTimeout = 1000; bytes = client.Receive(ref endPoint); } catch( SocketException se ) { if ( se.Message.Contains("did not properly respond after a period of time") ) { // Handle timeout differently.. } }

  • Looking for a new PHP website framework

    I built many a website, and my own 'custom' framework is just a general box of scripts cobbled together with loose ideas. I would love to progress to a framework which allows me to pass it onto the client for freedom. Someone suggested using wordpress but I'm not sure how general this can be. A current site I need to build is a fancy kitchen company, price lists, flash gallery (with backend driven pics) and well designed home. How could I bend the the will of wordpress?   • How to add libraries in C++?

    Yea this is a dumb question... However in both of my C++ classes we did not do this at all (except for native libraries: iostream, iomanip, etc.)... My question is can anyone provide a link that gives the general explanation of adding libraries to C++? I do realize what what #include means; it's just I have no clue on the linker/directories in a C++ IDE. So long question short; could I get a general explanation of terms used to link libraries in C++? I'm using c::b w/ MinGW.

    Hey all, If I have a router that has "mixed mode" enabled to allow b, g, and n devices, it is true that n devices will suffer in reduced bandwidth if there are any non-n devices connected? I am trying to attach files to mail using, [mail addAttachmentData:attachmentData mimeType:@"image/png" fileName:fileName]; but the problem is that if i need to send a .jpeg image i need to repeat code just for setting mime type to "mimeType:@"image/jpeg". My question is that is there any general mimeType that can attach any kind of file irrespective of .doc,.ppt,.pdf or an audio or video file. is there any general mimeType: for an kind of attachment.   • Class properties vs NSArray / NSDictionary

    I want a custom class object to hold data and have somehow the feeling that creating about 80 properties is not the best way of doing it. Most of the properties would be bool values, so i'm thinking about creating Arrays (keys / values) or (probably better) a NSDictionary attached to the object for holding the data. Does that make sense or should i stay with the properties? Extra: Are there general pros and cons for the different approaches? And what keywords / concepts do i have to search for to find discussions about that somehow general question? Thanks in advance

    Hi guys, I have a website that has around 10 pages. Only one of those pages uses Zend (to integrate with Google gData). Right now, it's just all coded into that one page, but I'm wanting to learn how to use Zend Framework. How do you handle basic-relatively static php pages within Zend Framework? Do you just stick the whole individual pages into their own respective views and then have to common stuff in the layout, and not worry about a model and controller for those pages? in general, is MVC accepted and appropriate technology for general "web-design" work?

  • How to migrate Django models from mysql to sqlite (or between any two database systems)?

    I have a Django deployment in production that uses MySQL. I would like to do further development with SQLite, so I would like to import my existing data to an SQLite database. I There is a shell script here to convert a general MySQL dump to SQLite, but it didn't work for me (apparently the general problem isn't easy). I figured doing this using the Django models must be much easier. How would you do this? Does anyone have any script to do this?

  • Trouble with SVN and Filename 'changes'.

    I am programming in Visual Studio 2010, using TortiseSVN and VisualSVN as my client to connect to SVN repositories. I am having a bit of a frequent problem though with the whole SVN thing in general. One thing that keeps cropping up is that if I make changes to files - namely filenames, or move them to new folders, etc, I end up getting all kinds of conflicts with the repository and it just causes all sorts of strange errors. I understand the importance of version control and check-in/check-out access like this, but what do most of you do to deal with this kind of thing? I mean, I've tried doing the whole 'Remove from Subversion', change my file, then 'Add to Subversion' thing, and it just doesn't seem to do the job very well. This is especially frustrating when working on web projects where filenames can change very frequently as a project evolves and becomes multifaceted. Are there any standard ways to deal with this kind of thing, or is it just one of the flaws of SVN in general?

  • Why there is so few AJAX (WEB 2.0) websites ?

    I am wondering and looking for some general reasons why there is so few full AJAX websites. Good example would be Gmail, which really uses a lot of the modern web technologies. But there is so few of these and almost all the websites use classic "request - pageload" approach. I am going to be developing website with most requests completed by AJAX call, as there is need for as few page loads as possible. So I am looking for some general advices or opinions about this. My personal big concern is search engines, because if most of the content is at one URL, how do you make that AJAX content crawlable ? There are probably more these questions which rise up, and I am looking for these to prepare for these problems before I start developing and it's too late to fix them.

    In general, should one design in order to place processing load on client-side? More specifically, a search engine to locate subscriber information requires a fair amount of parsing (multiple phone numbers to sort and format, hour of day, timezone, comparisons for possible substitutions of user information, etc.). Again, in general, is it preferred that one have client-side do the work? It seems to me 'yes' in a situation in which one will have many thousands of hits per minute. Use php for quick database queries ... process retrieved data client-side. yes ... no?
