  • Looking for more details about "Group varint encoding/decoding" presented in Jeff's slides

    I noticed that in Jeff's slides "Challenges in Building Large-Scale Information Retrieval Systems", which can also be downloaded here: http://research.google.com/people/jeff/WSDM09-keynote.pdf, a method of integers compression called "group varint encoding" was mentioned. It was said much faster than 7 bits per byte integer encoding (2X more). I am very interested in this and looking for an implementation of this, or any more details that could help me implement this by myself. I am not a pro and new to this, and any help is welcome!

    I'm trying to speed up my query... select PadID from Pads WHERE (keywords like '%$search%' or ProgramName like '%$search%' or English45 like '%$search%') AND RemovemeDate = '2001-01-01 00:00:00' ORDER BY VersionAddDate DESC I've done some work already, I have a keywords table so I can add ... PadID IN (SELECT PadID FROM Keywords WHERE word = '$search') ... However its going to be a nightmare to split up the words from English45 and ProgramName into a word table. Any ideas ? EDIT : (also provided actual table names)

  • Command line mode only -- successful login only brings me back to login screen

    whenever I log in the screen goes black, I see a glimpse of terminal-esque text, and then it brings me back to the log in screen (Ubuntu 12.04). I can enter and log in via the command line. The guest account works find. I think this happened because I edited some Xorg related file trying to make an external monitor work with my laptop. I copy pasted from a forum post so I dont recall the file or what i put in the file. Can't find the forum post again and my bash history wasn't recorded from that session. I tried reinstalling Xorg and ubuntu-desktop, nvidia, resetting any configs I could find... I'm really at a loss of what to do.     I have just installed the DuckDuckGo add-on in Firefox 11.0, running on XP SP 3. I would like to add additional parameters to the query string. However, any changes I make are not reflected in the query string when doing a search. I found the duckduckgo.xml file at C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\Profile Name.default\searchplugins.
