  • Copying files to my laptop makes them locked

    - by John
When I save files from e.g. remote desktop or from an email (outlook) attachments, or from skype even to my local machine they show a locked Icon on the file. Then e.g. SQL Server doesn't let me restore backups as it says the operating system doesn't have access to the file. I've had success fixing this by setting the ownership of the parent folder to my user and then let it apply to sub folders. Also sometimes I need to click - Proerties - Security - Advanced - Change Permmissions, then check "change child permissions..." and apply on the parent dir. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit Proffessional, on HP Probook 4530, and I have a administrator user. This is a real pain to do everytime. I suspect it might be because of HP software that came with the laptop, I think there is drive encryption as part of the protect tools. Although I'm hoping there's something in windows i can set to change the behaviour to not lock these files.

  • How to perform this Windows 7 permissions change on many files via GUI or command line

    - by hippietrail
After using my external hard drive on another Windows 7 computer to tweak photos with Windows Live Photo Gallery then upload them to Facebook I found the modified images were now not visible on the original Windows 7 computer. I'm not sure if the things I tried to get it working subsequently changed anything, but I do know this is the sequence of actions that makes the permissions of the modified files match those of the unmodified files: Right click on broken image file, select "Properties" On the "Security" tab press the "Advanced" button In the "Permissions" tab press the "Continue" button with the shield icon on it Tick the box marked "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent Click the "Remove" button to remove the only current entry "Type: Allow, Name: Administrators (XYZ\Administrators), Permission: Full control, Inherited From: OK on the "Permissions" tab. OK on the "Security" tab. Now this same procedure does not work at the folder level. It results in "access denied" dialogs. I'm looking for some way to perform this exact modification on all the images I edited on the other computer. I'm happy to use the Windows GUI in Explorer or any other included tools. I'm happy to use the Windows command line. I'd prefer not to use a third-party tool since I'd have to be satisfied it's not doing anything else. I'm not looking for a different way to change permissions to other settings to make an external drive full of photos editable on multiple computers. At least not in this question.

  • File corruption (bad checksums) in large files copied to VMware guest

    - by AllanA
In setting up a development lab, I've got a desktop system running ESXi 4.1.0 (free license) on SATA RAID 0 (already purchased and configured when I started this job; I'm open to hardware input as it pertains to my problem.) Its guests so far include two Win2008 Server R2 64-bit VMs and on Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit VM. I'm installing onto the Windows servers. We've been copying off some fairly large files (over a gigabyte) for an installation, hoping to install more quickly from a (virtual) hard drive than from the network for from BD-ROM. The problem is that they keep coming up with different checksums from the originals. The file sizes are the same, but md5sum reports different numbers (and so does the installer, as it refuses to continue when the checksums don't match.) I've tried copying directly from the BD-ROM (attaching the OS drive to the host system's physical drive). I've tried copying the large files onto a co-worker's Windows machine from his Blu-Ray drive; when I do that, the checksums match. But when I copy from his machine to the VM guest over a network share, the checksums no longer match. Thinking this meant a corrupt destination drive, I deleted it in vSphere and added another freshly created drive. The problem persists. I'm not sure what to try next.

  • Unable to create files in a directory

    - by vamsi360
I have created a directory in Virutalbox. Using VBoxManage, I am executing a script inside the Ubuntu VM directory I created above from Ubuntu host OS. But if the script in the VM contains commands for creating a new file, they are not executing. "echo" commands before and after the touch ommand are working fine. I even used root user for VBoxManage to install. I think the directory is not allowing the files to be created . How can I make a directory in Linux to be 777 to all new files created automatically. I mean, even if I make the directory (chmod 777 dir), I am unable to execute the script from the host. Please help. It may be simple permissions problem. Even root is unable to execute. VBoxManage guestcontrol "Ubuntu_10_04" execute --image "/bin/bash" "/home/cloudlet/Desktop/temp2/three" --username root --password root --verbose --wait-exit --wait-stdout -- -l /usr Please help. I am struggling with this problem for the past one week.

  • IIS_IUSRS cannot access files uploaded and created by Network Service - error 401.3

    - by Max
Let me rephrase my question as I investigated further: The problem: I have a php script that is used to upload images on my windows webserver 2008. The files are created in the correct directory. The are created and owned by the user Network Service. Network Service has full access to the uploaded file. As soon as I try to access the uploaded file (mostly an image) via HTTP, I get an 401.3 not authorized error. Now, if I right-click on the not accessible image and grant IIS_IUSRS group read permissions via the security tab, the image can be accessed! By default IIS_IUSRS has NO access at all for the uploaded file. The directory containing the image files has the correct access rights set. But each file that is new uploaded to the directory is permitted for IIS_IUSRS. The question: How can I grant IIS_IUSRS by default access to the newly uploaded file? The appPool of the website has its identity set to its default, I also tried setting it to "networkIdentity" or so, but that did not work either.

  • Where does Windows store MSI files for uninstallation?

    - by Nilzor
I'm trying to figure out how Windows (XP through 7) is handling installation and uninstallation of MSI files. I have come up in situations where Windows Installer is unable to uninstall because it's missing the original MSI file, which leads me to believe that it stores a copy of all installed MSI packages somewhere. Where? I've had a couple of theories. It expectes it to reside in the same folder as it was installed from. The registry keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall does point to the original installation folder, and error messages when the MSI file is missing often point to this. Removing the MSI file from this folder does not hinder the uninstallation process though, so I've refused this theory. C:\Windows\Installer. This folder actually contains a bunch of seemingly randomly named MSI files. But this list is incomplete. I do find entries in the registry key mentioned in 1) which does not have an MSI copy in this folder. So how does this work? How is windows installer able to uninstall MSI-installed applications even though the MSI is not in 1) and not in 2)?

  • Traditional IO vs memory-mapped

    - by Senne
    I'm trying to illustrate the difference in performance between traditional IO and memory mapped files in java to students. I found an example somewhere on internet but not everything is clear to me, I don't even think all steps are nececery. I read a lot about it here and there but I'm not convinced about a correct implementation of neither of them. The code I try to understand is: public class FileCopy{ public static void main(String args[]){ if (args.length < 1){ System.out.println(" Wrong usage!"); System.out.println(" Correct usage is : java FileCopy <large file with full path>"); System.exit(0); } String inFileName = args[0]; File inFile = new File(inFileName); if (inFile.exists() != true){ System.out.println(inFileName + " does not exist!"); System.exit(0); } try{ new FileCopy().memoryMappedCopy(inFileName, inFileName+".new" ); new FileCopy().customBufferedCopy(inFileName, inFileName+".new1"); }catch(FileNotFoundException fne){ fne.printStackTrace(); }catch(IOException ioe){ ioe.printStackTrace(); }catch (Exception e){ e.printStackTrace(); } } public void memoryMappedCopy(String fromFile, String toFile ) throws Exception{ long timeIn = new Date().getTime(); // read input file RandomAccessFile rafIn = new RandomAccessFile(fromFile, "rw"); FileChannel fcIn = rafIn.getChannel(); ByteBuffer byteBuffIn = fcIn.map(FileChannel.MapMode.READ_WRITE, 0,(int) fcIn.size()); fcIn.read(byteBuffIn); byteBuffIn.flip(); RandomAccessFile rafOut = new RandomAccessFile(toFile, "rw"); FileChannel fcOut = rafOut.getChannel(); ByteBuffer writeMap = fcOut.map(FileChannel.MapMode.READ_WRITE,0,(int) fcIn.size()); writeMap.put(byteBuffIn); long timeOut = new Date().getTime(); System.out.println("Memory mapped copy Time for a file of size :" + (int) fcIn.size() +" is "+(timeOut-timeIn)); fcOut.close(); fcIn.close(); } static final int CHUNK_SIZE = 100000; static final char[] inChars = new char[CHUNK_SIZE]; public static void customBufferedCopy(String fromFile, String toFile) throws IOException{ long timeIn = new Date().getTime(); Reader in = new FileReader(fromFile); Writer out = new FileWriter(toFile); while (true) { synchronized (inChars) { int amountRead = in.read(inChars); if (amountRead == -1) { break; } out.write(inChars, 0, amountRead); } } long timeOut = new Date().getTime(); System.out.println("Custom buffered copy Time for a file of size :" + (int) new File(fromFile).length() +" is "+(timeOut-timeIn)); in.close(); out.close(); } } When exactly is it nececary to use RandomAccessFile? Here it is used to read and write in the memoryMappedCopy, is it actually nececary just to copy a file at all? Or is it a part of memorry mapping? In customBufferedCopy, why is synchronized used here? I also found a different example that -should- test the performance between the 2: public class MappedIO { private static int numOfInts = 4000000; private static int numOfUbuffInts = 200000; private abstract static class Tester { private String name; public Tester(String name) { this.name = name; } public long runTest() { System.out.print(name + ": "); try { long startTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); test(); long endTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); return (endTime - startTime); } catch (IOException e) { throw new RuntimeException(e); } } public abstract void test() throws IOException; } private static Tester[] tests = { new Tester("Stream Write") { public void test() throws IOException { DataOutputStream dos = new DataOutputStream( new BufferedOutputStream( new FileOutputStream(new File("temp.tmp")))); for(int i = 0; i < numOfInts; i++) dos.writeInt(i); dos.close(); } }, new Tester("Mapped Write") { public void test() throws IOException { FileChannel fc = new RandomAccessFile("temp.tmp", "rw") .getChannel(); IntBuffer ib = fc.map( FileChannel.MapMode.READ_WRITE, 0, fc.size()) .asIntBuffer(); for(int i = 0; i < numOfInts; i++) ib.put(i); fc.close(); } }, new Tester("Stream Read") { public void test() throws IOException { DataInputStream dis = new DataInputStream( new BufferedInputStream( new FileInputStream("temp.tmp"))); for(int i = 0; i < numOfInts; i++) dis.readInt(); dis.close(); } }, new Tester("Mapped Read") { public void test() throws IOException { FileChannel fc = new FileInputStream( new File("temp.tmp")).getChannel(); IntBuffer ib = fc.map( FileChannel.MapMode.READ_ONLY, 0, fc.size()) .asIntBuffer(); while(ib.hasRemaining()) ib.get(); fc.close(); } }, new Tester("Stream Read/Write") { public void test() throws IOException { RandomAccessFile raf = new RandomAccessFile( new File("temp.tmp"), "rw"); raf.writeInt(1); for(int i = 0; i < numOfUbuffInts; i++) { raf.seek(raf.length() - 4); raf.writeInt(raf.readInt()); } raf.close(); } }, new Tester("Mapped Read/Write") { public void test() throws IOException { FileChannel fc = new RandomAccessFile( new File("temp.tmp"), "rw").getChannel(); IntBuffer ib = fc.map( FileChannel.MapMode.READ_WRITE, 0, fc.size()) .asIntBuffer(); ib.put(0); for(int i = 1; i < numOfUbuffInts; i++) ib.put(ib.get(i - 1)); fc.close(); } } }; public static void main(String[] args) { for(int i = 0; i < tests.length; i++) System.out.println(tests[i].runTest()); } } I more or less see whats going on, my output looks like this: Stream Write: 653 Mapped Write: 51 Stream Read: 651 Mapped Read: 40 Stream Read/Write: 14481 Mapped Read/Write: 6 What is makeing the Stream Read/Write so unbelievably long? And as a read/write test, to me it looks a bit pointless to read the same integer over and over (if I understand well what's going on in the Stream Read/Write) Wouldn't it be better to read int's from the previously written file and just read and write ints on the same place? Is there a better way to illustrate it? I've been breaking my head about a lot of these things for a while and I just can't get the whole picture..

  • Filtering bad requests from Apache -> logger -> rsyslog to syslog-ng on a remote logging server possible?

  • Connection drops while transferring large files to one server on a network

    - by Charlotte
My company has two sites, each with their own LAN, using site to site VPN tunnel to connect the two sites. When transferring files (especially larger files) from site1 to site2 server1, the file transfer fails. I don't think this can be a VPN issue because transferring the same files to site2 server2 which is on the same network as server1 works fine. Pings to server1 and server2 at site2 from site1 are about the same, mostly 19/20ms with the odd one up to 50ms. As server1 is DB server with a high load I thought the NIC maybe overloaded, but a transfer from site2 server1 to site2 server2 works fine, and that uses the same NIC on server1 as transfers from site1 to site2 server1. • Using wget to download pdf files from a site that requires cookies to be set

    - by matt74tm
I want to access a newspaper site and then download their epaper copies (in PDF). The site requires me to login using my email address and password and then it permits me to access those PDF URLs. I'm having trouble 'setting my session' in wget. When I login into the site from my browser, it sets two cookie values: [email protected] Password=12345 I tried: wget --post-data "[email protected]&Password=12345" http://epaper.abc.com/login.aspx However, that just downloaded the login page and saved it locally The FORM on the login page has two fields: txtUserID txtPassword and radiobuttons like this: <input id="rbtnManchester" type="radio" checked="checked" name="txtpub" value="44"> Another button: <input id="rbtnLondon" type="radio" name="txtpub" value="64"> If I post this to the login.aspx page, I get the same output wget --post-data "[email protected]&txtPassword=12345&txtpub=44" http://epaper.abc.com/login.aspx If I do: --save-cookies abc_cookies.txt it doesnt seem to have anything other than the default content. For the last if I do --debug as well it says: ... Set-Cookie: ASP.NET_SessionId=05kphcn4hjmblq45qgnjoe41; path=/; HttpOnly ... Saving cookies to abc_cookies.txt. However, abc_cookies.txt shows ONLY the following: # HTTP cookie file. # Generated by Wget on 2011-08-16 08:03:05. # Edit at your own risk. • Clickonce downloading the deploy files via HTTP and not HTTPS

    - by Scott Manning
I am working on a project to deploy a project via clickonce. The website where these files are housed will only accept HTTPS traffic and if you attempt to connect via HTTP, our siteminder agent will redirect you to a HTTPS login form. We cannot disable the siteminder agent or enable HTTP for security reasons. In the application file, I have a codebase that references an absolute path to the manifest and it is via HTTPS <dependency> <dependentAssembly dependencyType="install" codebase="https://psaportal.ilab.test.com/testprinting/Application_Files/testprint_1_0_0_1/testprint.exe.manifest" size="10147"> <assemblyIdentity name="testprint.exe" version="1.0.0.1" publicKeyToken="9a078649ee05e0e7" language="neutral" processorArchitecture="msil" type="win32" /> <hash> <dsig:Transforms> <dsig:Transform Algorithm="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:HashTransforms.Identity" /> </dsig:Transforms> <dsig:DigestMethod Algorithm="http://www.w3.org/2000/09/xmldsig#sha1" /> <dsig:DigestValue>2nch1T0SmlAycmePobtg9F1qF7c=</dsig:DigestValue> </hash> </dependentAssembly> </dependency> In running wireshark and decoding the SSL traffic (I am using the server’s private key in wireshark to decrypt the SSL traffic). I see the request to the application’s manifest file is via HTTPS (This is a good thing). But when the clickonce tries to download the testprint.exe.deploy and the other respective files, it is always via HTTP and the siteminder jumps in and redirects the requests which kills the clickonce install with errors. I have tried to specific an absolute codebase reference in the manifest file, but then I start getting entrypoint errors when the manifest is downloaded by the Clickonce installer. The current dependency section from the manifest file looks like the following: <dependency> <dependentAssembly dependencyType="install" allowDelayedBinding="true" codebase="testprint.exe" size="107008"> <assemblyIdentity name="testprint" version="1.0.0.1" language="neutral" processorArchitecture="msil" /> <hash> <dsig:Transforms> <dsig:Transform Algorithm="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:HashTransforms.Identity" /> </dsig:Transforms> <dsig:DigestMethod Algorithm="http://www.w3.org/2000/09/xmldsig#sha1" /> <dsig:DigestValue>dm2nJsu/5UyaEXSDmnISwfnE9MM=</dsig:DigestValue> </hash> </dependentAssembly> </dependency> I have verified that the website where the application, manifest and deploy files are all under the same URL and the SSL certificate is a valid certificate. We have tried about every combination of generating application and manifest files as we a dream up and are looking for other solutions. The application is using .NET 3.5 and we have tried building the application and manifest files via VS2008, VS2010 and mage with no success. Does anyone know how to get all of the deploy files to always download via HTTPS?

  • Including objects from external .js files

    - by Molle
I have been searching for many hours over several days for this answer and though there are many topics on how to include files in a project (also here at Stack Overflow), I have not yet found THE solution to my problem. I'm working on a project where I want to include one single object at a time, from many different files (I do not want to include the files themselves, only their content). All the object in all the files have the same name, only the content is different. It is important that I do not get a SCRIPT tag in the head section of the page as all the content from the files will have the same names. None of the files will have functions anyways, only one single object, that will need to be loaded one at the time and then discarded when the next element is loaded. The objects will hold the data that will be shown on the page and they will be called from the menu by an 'onclick' event. function setMenu() // The menu is being build. { var html = ''; html += '<table border="0">'; for (var i = 0; i<menu.pages.length; i++) { html += '<tr class="menuPunkt"><td width="5"></td><td onclick="pageName(this)">'+ menu.pages[i] +'</td><td width="5"></td></tr>'; } // menu is a global object containing elements such as an array with // all the pages that needs to be shown and styling for the menu. html += '</table>'; document.getElementById("menu").innerHTML = html; style.setMenu(); // The menu is being positioned and styled. } Now, when I click on a menu item the pageName function is triggered and I'm sending the HTML element to the function as well, it is here that I want the content from my external file to be loaded into a local variable and used to display content on the page. ** The answer I want is "How to load the external obj into the function where I need it? (It may be an external file, but only in the term of not being included in the head section. I'm still loading the the file from my own local library.** function pageName(elm) // The element that I clicked is elm. { var page = info.innerHTML; // I need only the innerHTML from the element. var file = 'sites/' + page + '.js'; // The file to be loaded is created. var obj = ?? // Here I somehow want the object from the external file to be loaded. // Before doing stuff the the obj. style.content(); } The content from the external file could look like this: // The src for the external page: 'sites/page.js' var obj = new Object() { obj.innerHTML = 'Text to be shown'; obj.style = 'Not important for problem at hand'; obj.otherStuff = ' --||-- '; } Any help will be appreciated, Molle

  • Recover Data Like a Forensics Expert Using an Ubuntu Live CD

    - by Trevor Bekolay
There are lots of utilities to recover deleted files, but what if you can’t boot up your computer, or the whole drive has been formatted? We’ll show you some tools that will dig deep and recover the most elusive deleted files, or even whole hard drive partitions. We’ve shown you simple ways to recover accidentally deleted files, even a simple method that can be done from an Ubuntu Live CD, but for hard disks that have been heavily corrupted, those methods aren’t going to cut it. In this article, we’ll examine four tools that can recover data from the most messed up hard drives, regardless of whether they were formatted for a Windows, Linux, or Mac computer, or even if the partition table is wiped out entirely. Note: These tools cannot recover data that has been overwritten on a hard disk. Whether a deleted file has been overwritten depends on many factors – the quicker you realize that you want to recover a file, the more likely you will be able to do so. Our setup To show these tools, we’ve set up a small 1 GB hard drive, with half of the space partitioned as ext2, a file system used in Linux, and half the space partitioned as FAT32, a file system used in older Windows systems. We stored ten random pictures on each hard drive. We then wiped the partition table from the hard drive by deleting the partitions in GParted. Is our data lost forever? Installing the tools All of the tools we’re going to use are in Ubuntu’s universe repository. To enable the repository, open Synaptic Package Manager by clicking on System in the top-left, then Administration > Synaptic Package Manager. Click on Settings > Repositories and add a check in the box labelled “Community-maintained Open Source software (universe)”. Click Close, and then in the main Synaptic Package Manager window, click the Reload button. Once the package list has reloaded, and the search index rebuilt, search for and mark for installation one or all of the following packages: testdisk, foremost, and scalpel. Testdisk includes TestDisk, which can recover lost partitions and repair boot sectors, and PhotoRec, which can recover many different types of files from tons of different file systems. Foremost, originally developed by the US Air Force Office of Special Investigations, recovers files based on their headers and other internal structures. Foremost operates on hard drives or drive image files generated by various tools. Finally, scalpel performs the same functions as foremost, but is focused on enhanced performance and lower memory usage. Scalpel may run better if you have an older machine with less RAM. Recover hard drive partitions If you can’t mount your hard drive, then its partition table might be corrupted. Before you start trying to recover your important files, it may be possible to recover one or more partitions on your drive, recovering all of your files with one step. Testdisk is the tool for the job. Start it by opening a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and typing in: sudo testdisk If you’d like, you can create a log file, though it won’t affect how much data you recover. Once you make your choice, you’re greeted with a list of the storage media on your machine. You should be able to identify the hard drive you want to recover partitions from by its size and label. TestDisk asks you select the type of partition table to search for. In most cases (ext2/3, NTFS, FAT32, etc.) you should select Intel and press Enter. Highlight Analyse and press enter. In our case, our small hard drive has previously been formatted as NTFS. Amazingly, TestDisk finds this partition, though it is unable to recover it. It also finds the two partitions we just deleted. We are able to change their attributes, or add more partitions, but we’ll just recover them by pressing Enter. If TestDisk hasn’t found all of your partitions, you can try doing a deeper search by selecting that option with the left and right arrow keys. We only had these two partitions, so we’ll recover them by selecting Write and pressing Enter. Testdisk informs us that we will have to reboot. Note: If your Ubuntu Live CD is not persistent, then when you reboot you will have to reinstall any tools that you installed earlier. After restarting, both of our partitions are back to their original states, pictures and all. Recover files of certain types For the following examples, we deleted the 10 pictures from both partitions and then reformatted them. PhotoRec Of the three tools we’ll show, PhotoRec is the most user-friendly, despite being a console-based utility. To start recovering files, open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and type in: sudo photorec To begin, you are asked to select a storage device to search. You should be able to identify the right device by its size and label. Select the right device, and then hit Enter. PhotoRec asks you select the type of partition to search. In most cases (ext2/3, NTFS, FAT, etc.) you should select Intel and press Enter. You are given a list of the partitions on your selected hard drive. If you want to recover all of the files on a partition, then select Search and hit enter. However, this process can be very slow, and in our case we only want to search for pictures files, so instead we use the right arrow key to select File Opt and press Enter. PhotoRec can recover many different types of files, and deselecting each one would take a long time. Instead, we press “s” to clear all of the selections, and then find the appropriate file types – jpg, gif, and png – and select them by pressing the right arrow key. Once we’ve selected these three, we press “b” to save these selections. Press enter to return to the list of hard drive partitions. We want to search both of our partitions, so we highlight “No partition” and “Search” and then press Enter. PhotoRec prompts for a location to store the recovered files. If you have a different healthy hard drive, then we recommend storing the recovered files there. Since we’re not recovering very much, we’ll store it on the Ubuntu Live CD’s desktop. Note: Do not recover files to the hard drive you’re recovering from. PhotoRec is able to recover the 20 pictures from the partitions on our hard drive! A quick look in the recup_dir.1 directory that it creates confirms that PhotoRec has recovered all of our pictures, save for the file names. Foremost Foremost is a command-line program with no interactive interface like PhotoRec, but offers a number of command-line options to get as much data out of your had drive as possible. For a full list of options that can be tweaked via the command line, open up a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and type in: foremost –h In our case, the command line options that we are going to use are: -t, a comma-separated list of types of files to search for. In our case, this is “jpeg, png, gif”. -v, enabling verbose-mode, giving us more information about what foremost is doing. -o, the output folder to store recovered files in. In our case, we created a directory called “foremost” on the desktop. -i, the input that will be searched for files. This can be a disk image in several different formats; however, we will use a hard disk, /dev/sda. Our foremost invocation is: sudo foremost –t jpeg, png, gif –o foremost –v –i /dev/sda Your invocation will differ depending on what you’re searching for and where you’re searching for it. Foremost is able to recover 17 of the 20 files stored on the hard drive. Looking at the files, we can confirm that these files were recovered relatively well, though we can see some errors in the thumbnail for 00622449.jpg. Part of this may be due to the ext2 filesystem. Foremost recommends using the –d command-line option for Linux file systems like ext2. We’ll run foremost again, adding the –d command-line option to our foremost invocation: sudo foremost –t jpeg, png, gif –d –o foremost –v –i /dev/sda This time, foremost is able to recover all 20 images! A final look at the pictures reveals that the pictures were recovered with no problems. Scalpel Scalpel is another powerful program that, like Foremost, is heavily configurable. Unlike Foremost, Scalpel requires you to edit a configuration file before attempting any data recovery. Any text editor will do, but we’ll use gedit to change the configuration file. In a terminal window (Applications > Accessories > Terminal), type in: sudo gedit /etc/scalpel/scalpel.conf scalpel.conf contains information about a number of different file types. Scroll through this file and uncomment lines that start with a file type that you want to recover (i.e. remove the “#” character at the start of those lines). Save the file and close it. Return to the terminal window. Scalpel also has a ton of command-line options that can help you search quickly and effectively; however, we’ll just define the input device (/dev/sda) and the output folder (a folder called “scalpel” that we created on the desktop). Our invocation is: sudo scalpel /dev/sda –o scalpel Scalpel is able to recover 18 of our 20 files. A quick look at the files scalpel recovered reveals that most of our files were recovered successfully, though there were some problems (e.g. 00000012.jpg). Conclusion In our quick toy example, TestDisk was able to recover two deleted partitions, and PhotoRec and Foremost were able to recover all 20 deleted images. • Do all mods simply alter game files? [on hold]

    - by Starkers
When you install some mods you drag certain files into your game directory and replace the files. Other mods, though, come with an installer where you can set parameters first. Does the installer then go and automatically replace the certain files? At the end of the day, is that all the installation of any mod is? Is the installation of a mod simply the replacement of certain files inside the game's root directory? Do mods exist which don't fit the above statement? That install outside the game's root? Why do they do this? All the mods I can think of do just replace certain files inside the game's root. However, I know Team Fortress was spawned from a multiplayer halflife 1 mod. Do you reckon that mod installed files outside the root to enable multiplayer via a network for a single player game? How rare are these mods? Or do they not even exist? Do even extensive mods make all their changes inside the root?

  • Cat all files in a directory, with a specific file at the beginning an end...?

    - by Aeisor
Is there a way to cat all files in a given directory, but with a particular file at the beginning and end? For example, say I have: file1.js, file2.js, file3.js, file4.js, file5.js -- Effectively I would like to cat file2.js file*.js file3.js > /var/www/output.js I've tried a few variations of these find ! -name "file2.js" ! -name "file3.js" -type f -exec cat file2.js {} file3.js > /var/www/js/output.js \; find ! -name "file2.js" ! -name "file3.js" -type f | xargs -I files cat file2.js files file3.js > /var/www/output.js but the best I can get out of it is file2.js added before and file3.js added after all other files (multiple times) I know I could specify the files in the order I wanted manually, but this is not maintainable (I'm expecting, potentially 100 files). I have looked through man cat, as well as a handful of websites devoted to xargs, find and cat to no avail. Thanks in advance.

  • how to use a batch file to delete a line of text in a bunch of text files? [on hold]

    - by wbt
I have a bunch of txt files in my D drive which are placed randomly in different locations. Some files also contain symbols.I want a batch file so that i can delete their specific lines completely at the same time without doing it one by one for each file and please refer to a code which does not create a new text file at some other location with the changes being incorporated i.e I do not want the input.txt and output.txt thing.I just need the original files to be replaced with the changes as soon as i click the batch file. e.g D:\abc\1.txt D:\xyz\2.txt etc I want both of their 3rd lines erased completely with a single click and the new file must be saved with the same name in the same location i.e the new changed text files must replace the old text files with their respective lines removed.Maybe some sort of *.txt thing i.e i should be able to change all the files with the .txt extensions in a drive via a single batch file perhaps in another drive, not placing my batch file into each and every folder separately and then running them.Alternatively a vbs file is also welcomed. SORRY FOR THE LONG AND THOROUGH MESSAGE BUT I'M WONDERING ALL OVER THE INTERNET FOR THE LAST TWO DAYS JUST FOR THIS ONE BATCH FILE.ALL THE INFORMATION I GET IS A SORT OF JARGON FOR ME AS I AM NOT A GEEK WITH THE SCRIPTING.PLEASE DESCRIBE THE CODE TOO.YOUR HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED

  • Very simple application fails with "multiple target patterns" from Eclipse

    - by Paul Lammertsma
    Since I'm more comfortable using Eclipse, I thought I'd try converting my project from Visual Studio. Yesterday I tried a very simple little test. No matter what I try, make fails with "multiple target patterns". (This is similar to this unanswered question.) I have three files: Application.cpp: using namespace std; #include "Window.h" int main() { Window *win = new Window(); delete &win; return 0; } Window.h: #ifndef WINDOW_H_ #define WINDOW_H_ class Window { public: Window(); ~Window(); }; #endif Window.cpp: #include <cv.h> #include <highgui.h> #include "Window.h" const char* WINDOW_NAME = "MyApp"; Window::Window() { cvNamedWindow(WINDOW_NAME, CV_WINDOW_AUTOSIZE); cvResizeWindow(WINDOW_NAME, 200, 200); cvMoveWindow(WINDOW_NAME, 0, 0); int key = 0; while (true) { key = cvWaitKey(0); if (key==27 || cvGetWindowHandle(WINDOW_NAME)==0) { break; } } } Window::~Window() { cvDestroyWindow(WINDOW_NAME); } I have added the following paths to the compiler include path (-I): "$(OPENCV)/cv/include" "$(OPENCV)/cxcore/include" "$(OPENCV)/otherlibs/highgui" I have added the following libraries to the linker (-l): cv cxcore highgui And the following library search path (-L): "$(OPENCV)/lib/" Eclipse, the compiler and the linker all succeed in including the headers and libraries. I am using the GNU C/C++ compiler & linker from Cygwin. When compiling, I get the following make error: src/Window.d:1: *** multiple target patterns. Stop. Window.d contains: src/Window.d src/Window.o: ../src/Window.cpp \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cv/include/cv.h \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxcore.h \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxtypes.h \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxerror.h \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cvver.h \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxcore.hpp \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cv/include/cvtypes.h \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cv/include/cv.hpp \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cv/include/cvcompat.h \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/otherlibs/highgui/highgui.h \ C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxcore.h ../src/Constants.h \ ../src/Window.h C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cv/include/cv.h: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxcore.h: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxtypes.h: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxerror.h: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cvver.h: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxcore.hpp: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cv/include/cvtypes.h: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cv/include/cv.hpp: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cv/include/cvcompat.h: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/otherlibs/highgui/highgui.h: C:/Program\ Files/OpenCV/cxcore/include/cxcore.h: ../src/Constants.h: ../src/Window.h: I tried removing all OpenCV headers from Window.d (from line 2 onwards), but the error remains. Also, I've updated Eclipse and OpenCV, all to no avail. Do you have any ideas worth trying? I'm willing to try anything!

  • Including configuration files while compiling a Flex application with MXMLC

    - by Daniel
Hello there, I'm using: - Flex SDK 3.5.0 - Parsley 2.2.2. - Flash Builder 4 Down in my src folder (which is configured as part of the source path in the Flash Builder), I have a logging.xml which I configure via Parsley: FlexLoggingXmlSupport.initialize(); XmlContextBuilder.build("com/company/product/util/log/logging.xml"); When I run my application through Flash Builder, the XmlContentBuilder seems to locate the logging.xml (the implementation is a regular URLLoader one). When I compile my application using MXMLC (whether in Ant or command-line), and then run the swf, I get the following error: Cause(0): Error loading com/company/product/util/log/logging.xml: Error in URLLoader - cause: Error #2032: Stream Error. URL: file:///C|/workspace/folder01/product/target/com/company/product/util/log/logging.xml - cause: Error #2032: Stream Error. URL: file:///C|/workspace/folder01/product/target/com/company/product/util/log/logging.xml Here is the MXMLC tag in Ant: <mxmlc file="${product.src.dir}/com/company/product/view/Main.mxml" output="${product.target.dir}/${product.release.filename}" keep-generated-actionscript="false"> <load-config filename="${FLEX_HOME}/frameworks/flex-config.xml" /> <!-- source paths --> <source-path path-element="${FLEX_HOME}/frameworks" /> <compiler.source-path path-element="${product.src.dir}" /> <compiler.source-path path-element="${product.locale.dir}/{locale}" /> <compiler.library-path dir="${product.basedir}" append="true"> <include name="libs" /> </compiler.library-path> <warnings>false</warnings> <debug>false</debug> </mxmlc> And here is the command line: \mxmlc.exe -output "C:\temp\Rap.swf" -load-config "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder 4 Plug-in\sdks\3.5.0\frameworks\flex-config.xml" -source-path "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder 4 Plug-in\sdks\3.5.0\frameworks" C:\workspace\folder01\product\src C:\workspace\folder01\product\locale\en_US -library-path+=C:\workspace\folder01\product\libs -file-specs C:\workspace\folder01\product\src\com\company\product\view\main.mxml Now perhaps I don't get this correctly, but as far as I understand the SWF should be compiled with all of the resources in the paths I give MXMLC as source-paths. For some reason it seems that the XML file is not compiled into the SWF, hence the relative path of the XmlContentBuilder isn't located successfully. I could not find any argument to provide the MXMLC with that might solve this. I tried using the -dump-config option with the Flash Builder's compiler, then giving that configuration to MXMLC, but it didn't work either. I tried providing the XmlContentBuilder with an absolute path. That worked fine when I compiled with MXMLC via Ant, but still didn't work when I used MXMLC in the command-line... I'd be happy to be enlightened here, regarding all subjects - using MXMLC, accessing resources with relative paths, configuring logging in Parsley, etc. Many thanks in advance, Daniel

  • file.createNewFile() creates files with last-modified time before actual creation time

    - by Kaleb Pederson
I'm using JPoller to detect changes to files in a specific directory, but it's missing files because they end up with a timestamp earlier than their actual creation time. Here's how I test: public static void main(String [] files) { for (String file : files) { File f = new File(file); if (f.exists()) { System.err.println(file + " exists"); continue; } try { // find out the current time, I would hope to assume that the last-modified // time on the file will definitely be later than this System.out.println("-----------------------------------------"); long time = System.currentTimeMillis(); // create the file System.out.println("Creating " + file + " at " + time); f.createNewFile(); // let's see what the timestamp actually is (I've only seen it <time) System.out.println(file + " was last modified at: " + f.lastModified()); // well, ok, what if I explicitly set it to time? f.setLastModified(time); System.out.println("Updated modified time on " + file + " to " + time + " with actual " + f.lastModified()); } catch (IOException e) { System.err.println("Unable to create file"); } } } And here's what I get for output: ----------------------------------------- Creating test.7 at 1272324597956 test.7 was last modified at: 1272324597000 Updated modified time on test.7 to 1272324597956 with actual 1272324597000 ----------------------------------------- Creating test.8 at 1272324597957 test.8 was last modified at: 1272324597000 Updated modified time on test.8 to 1272324597957 with actual 1272324597000 ----------------------------------------- Creating test.9 at 1272324597957 test.9 was last modified at: 1272324597000 Updated modified time on test.9 to 1272324597957 with actual 1272324597000 The result is a race condition: JPoller records time of last check as xyz...123 File created at xyz...456 File last-modified timestamp actually reads xyz...000 JPoller looks for new/updated files with timestamp greater than xyz...123 JPoller ignores newly added file because xyz...000 is less than xyz...123 I pull my hair out for a while I tried digging into the code but both lastModified() and createNewFile() eventually resolve to native calls so I'm left with little information. For test.9, I lose 957 milliseconds. What kind of accuracy can I expect? Are my results going to vary by operating system or file system? Suggested workarounds? NOTE: I'm currently running Linux with an XFS filesystem. I wrote a quick program in C and the stat system call shows st_mtime as truncate(xyz...000/1000).

  • What are the pitfalls of hardlinked files on my desktop PC?

    - by MountainX
All the identical-content files on my PC are now hardlinked. (My data is completely de-duplicated. It is a consequence of the way I copied my data from my old computer.) What pitfalls do I need to be aware of now that certain actions on one file could silently affect a number of other files? I know that deleting the file I'm working on is not a problem (assuming I deleted it on purpose). It doesn't affect any of the other hardlinked files and I don't see that the delete action would lead to unexpected side effects. Moving or renaming the file is not a problem. I don't see any unexpected consequences. I don't think copying hardlinked files is a problem, but I'm not as confident about any unexpected consequences in this regard. What I have seen is that making a copy (to the same disk) of a hardlinked file with cp keeps the copy hardlinked (i.e., inode number doesn't change in the copy). Copying to another filesystem obviously breaks the hardlink. (I guess one pitfall is forgetting this fact, given that my PC has 3 hard disks.) Changing permissions does affect all linked files. So far this has proven handy. (I made a large number of the hardlinked files read-only.) None of the operations above seem to produce any major unexpected consequences. However, as was pointed out to me by Daniel Beck in a comment, editing or modifying a file can sometimes be a problem. It depends on the tool and maybe the type of edit. (For example, editing small text files using sed seems to always break the link while using nano doesn't.) This introduces the chance that editing one file could affect all the hardlinked files (i.e., alter the original inode). My proposed solution to this is to make all hardlinked files read-only (and that is already mostly the case). If I can't do that for some files, I will unlink those particular files. Is there any problem with this read-only approach? I'm assuming that if I go to edit a file and find it to be read-only, I'll remember to unlink that filename while making it writable. So one pitfall might be forgetting this rule. In that case, I'll have to rely on my backups. Am I correct in the above statements? And what else do I need to know? BTW, I'm running Kubuntu 12.04. I'm also using btrfs. (I have 2 SSD's and 1 HDD in the PC. I will also be adding an external USB HDD. I'm also connected to a network and I mount some NFS shares. I don't assume any of these last bits are relevant to the question, but I'm adding them just in case.) BTW, since I have more than one drive (with separate file systems), to unlink any file all I have to do is copy it to another drive, then move it back. However, using sed also works (in my testing). Here's my script: sed -i 's/\(.\)/\1/' file1 Surprisingly, this even unlinks zero byte files. In my testing it also appears to work on non-text files without any special options. (But I understand that the --binary option might be needed on Windows, MS-DOS and Cygwin.) However, copying to another disk and moving back may be the best way to unlink. For my use-case, unlink command doesn't really "unlink", rather it "removes".
