  • Is it possible that solid state drives (or any faster drive) will make common applications faster even if they are cached?

    I assumed that solid state drives are insignificant after, say, Firefox is fully brought up and no important disk activity after that is going on. However, I wonder if some kind of 'cached from the disk to the CPU' activity is going on that may make solid state drives (or any faster drive) better. Then again, I suspect that may be depended only on the Bus (or some kind of cache memory drives have). Hrm..

    I blocked a page in robots.txt under User-agent: *, and tried to do a manual removal of that URL from Google's cache in the webmasters tools. Google said it wasn't being blocked in my robots.txt, so I then blocked it specifically under User-agent: GoogleBot and tried removing it again and this time it worked. Does that mean Google doesn't respect User-agent: * or what?

    I'm having trouble with the Gmail yellow notification area disappearing too quickly in Google Chrome. For reference, I am talking about the notification that appears at the top of Gmail after archiving or deleting a message from a web browser. I tried it on IE9 and it works fine. I have also cleared the cache and cookies on Chrome and the issue persists. Has anybody run into this on Chrome and know of a solution?

    Hey! I connect remotely to my Ubuntu server from Vista machine. Now I need to run a GUI application on the server (Wireshark). So I decided to use FreeNX server/client to view Ubuntu GUI on Vista I have successfully installed FreeNX on Ubuntu and NX Client on Vista. I was following this guide Unfortunately, now I found myself stuck with the following problem. At the client, the !M logo window appears, but after a few seconds that window just closes, even without showing any error message. Guys, I'm really stuck, please help! Maybe I should have installed some graphical environment on the server?   • s3fs not maintaining uid/gid

    I'm mounting s3 using s3fs with the following command: sudo /usr/local/bin/s3fs -o use_cache=/tmp,uid=1000,gid=1000,allow_other svn.domain.com /svn Allow_other is confirmed to be working along with cache. However, no variation/different placement of the uid/gid's is having any affect in the meta data on S3. Both the uid and gid come up as '0' in S3. I have created a user called svn with uid of 1000 to see if that would fix the problem. No luck.

    We are going to be setting up two replicas of our DataMart and related databases, and our plan includes using Hyper-V VM's to handle the load. When creating the VM's, we cannot find specific requirements or recommendations for RAM/CPU power for read-only replicas. Our current Primary DataMart setup has 64GB RAM and Two Quad-Core procs, which so far has been adequate for our usage. What should be the server setup for replicas and SQL Server to adequately support the read-only usage?

  • Any simple tools for re-loading a specified web page periodically (Windows)?

    I've got a website that is exhibiting slow performance on the first load and would like to attempt to load it every 5 minutes or so to keep the cache fresh. Are there any simple tools to accomplish this? Scheduled tasks doesn't have quite the time resolution I need. The tricky thing is that this site uses Windows authentication so a wget script won't work. I'm also worried about instantiating a bunch of copies of internet explorer or attempting to kill iexplore.exe tasks blindly.

  • Browser caching is generating hugo I/O to server

    Our users My Documents are stored on a Emc NAS. I have noticed huge traffic coming from users and I see that most of it is coming to cache directories of Internet Explorer and other browsers. One thing i suspect is Adobe Flash caching streams. We have various Windows clients and no restrictions on browsers. Is there any way to remove this traffic from our NAS by a group policy or whatever? Thanks Rime

For those from the fairer OS: how much memory does the operating system take up? how much memory does Google Chrome, with 10-15 tabs open, probably a Youtube, Gmail, Docs among them, usually take up? Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint? I plan on purchasing the 1.86Ghz 13" Macbook Air.

  • Nginx 500 Internal Server error on subdirectory

    I'm getting a 500 Internal Server error only on sub directories. For example, If my website is example.com, example.com/index.php works. But example.com/phpbb/index.php doesn't work. It just turns up a blank php page. The HTTP header shows HTTP error 500 Internal Server error. If I enter example.com/phpbb/index.php/somedirectory, the index.php of my root directory shows up. This is all very strange. I have tried searching etc but nothing worked. tried re-installing nginx but not fixed. I'm sure I got the DNS configured right.     According to the documentation, a management group should have an odd number of managers greater than 1. I have a four node SAN consisting of P4500 G2s. I plan on having two clusters with two nodes each in this management group, i.e.: -Managent_Group1 -Cluster1 -Node1 -Node2 -Cluster2 -Node3 -Node4 Are there any issues running standard managers on Node1, Node2, and Node3? After reading the documentation, I'm still unclear about whether or not cluster membership matters in quorum consistency, or if they don't matter at all.

    Hi, I'm running ubuntu 9.10 which has gcc4 (libstdc++6) installed, and I need to install a program that requires libstdc++5 that comes with gcc3. I don't see gcc-3 listed when I run "apt-cache search" so: Is it necessary to install gcc-3 to achieve libstdc++5 ? If so where can I get it ? Is there a way to install just libstdc++5 Would a soft link to libstdc++6 do or is it not recommended ? Thanks

    I just heard about policyd-weight so I did an apt-cache search policyd which returns three options: policyd-weight postfix-policyd postfwd Which one is the best, and do you have any tips on setting them up? Our current setup is whitelister plus postgrey to greylist RBLd hosts, then fail2ban them for 10 minutes if they have 10 failures, followed by content filtering (Kaspersky Anti-Spam). The content filtering is pretty good, but there's still a lot of spam that gets through the RBL greylisting.
