• Best tool to understand source

  I have a source code for a project. I am working on porting it to another device as the current source code is for a linux environment. I am having some error on the newly ported code. So i was thinking it would be best to once again understand the whole source code and this will help me localise the errors. Now the problem is that i tried using 'gdb' for linux to debug the code but it does not help. So is there any tool that I can use to trace the program line by line ? By doing so i can understand the program flow. Please Help !

  How to interact with colleague who will happily talk about a thing, but from the way he talk about it, it becomes clear, that he does not fully understand some underlying concepts - but at the same time is not that kind of personality, that would ask for clarification or explanation (maybe because it is sign of weakness). There is difficulty involved in such a situation, since such people will demand to be consulted in a decision process, but instead of brainstorming solutions one will need to neutralize the diffusion of the concepts first, and when this is done time is already up and solution cannot be brainstormed any more. Maybe FUD is not the correct acronym, maybe DIS, Diffusion, Indifference, Surety.

  Hello I'm a senior student at my university and chairperson of IEEE Student Branch there. Recently I was thinking of some idea to acquaint students with the professional environment, how software is produced in the industry and get a practical experience.. Obviously trips to software houses are not enough and we cannot provide this many internships. So the idea of simulating a software house within the university popped in. Resources at my disposal are students with their own laptops, university UPS and lan network with internet access, and a reasonably sized room with a whiteboard and three hours free time daily.. :) However, I have absolutely no idea where to begin with. Milestones or whatever it may be called, are Requirements Document generation, sharing of resources, delegation of tasks, version controlling etc... I'd really appreciate some advice, programming tools (for JAVA), communication tools etc and other things used in a decent software house... Technologies to be targeted shall be random possibly starting with J2EE Spring Hibernate and Later Visual Programming in .NET C# and ASP.NET MVC as well as Android or iPhone development....

• I've changed my URL schema. How do I tell Google to index the new schema and forget the old one?

  I had a site where the urls were constructed like this /index.php/Topic /index.php/AnotherTopic These were indexed in google, and search results returned that pointed to these. However, I've recently replatformed that site, and reconfigured it so the above urls would be: /index.php?title=Topic /index.php?title=AnotherTopic The original urls are returning 404s. The site is linking to the correct URL schema internally, but Google is retaining the original schema in its search results. I've updated and resubmitted the sitemap which only contains the new schema. Also, Google's webmasters tool is going slightly bananas at the fact there's now a spike in 404 errors in its crawl results. What would be the best approach to get Google to 'forget' about the old schema, and instead index the new schema? Should I try blocking /index.php/ in robots.txt? Should I be returning 301 codes instead of 404 for the original urls?

  I've a problem that I can't find the solution for on the web. I have a blog that has PR 1 and it's subdomain "aaaa.domain.com" that "domain.com" is a blog server. Now I want buy a domain "newdomain.com" and I want tell google webmaster to redirect the old subdomain to this new domain and send traffic to my new domain. I can't access .htaccess to use a 301 redirect. The only thing that I can do is put html code in the html. How can I do this? When I use "Change of Address" in google webmaster it say:"Restricted to root level domains only".

Unfortunately, both are geared towards content-based sites where everything is about the URL. Our URLs contain object IDs, making them less useful independently, and causing us to grow beyond Google Analytics' 50,000 unique URLs per day. • Should I submit my RSS feed as Google Sitemap?

  I currently have no sitemap for a website I'm creating. I do have an RSS feed which includes the N latest updated posts on the site. It doesn't include everything on the site though, just blog posts. Creating a full sitemap would be a bit of a hassle I think. Should I submit the feed instead? Is there a difference between using a regular sitemap and a feed? Is it important to have a sitemap? What happens when you do/don't?

• Moving from root to www

  I've read tons of questions but I can't find the answer to this seemingly obvious issue. I'm moving my WordPress site from domain.com to www.domain.com so that I can use CloudFlare. I did the change in WP and everything works fine, with domain.com redirecting correctly. Do I need to add the www site in GWT (and remove domain.com) or will it keep tracking the website correctly thanks to the redirections?

What is the best way to make the old dirty ones disappear from search results and keep the clean ones? Is blocking profile.php with robots.txt enough?

• TFS SQL Deployment Data Script

  We are using TFS and SQL 2005 (looking to upgrade to SQL 2012 if that makes a difference). We store our database schema in a Visual Studio Database project (VS 2010). When code is released to live we currently use the Visual Studio Database Project to build a script for all our schema changes. The problem we have been getting is having to alter or add to that script to add/fix data for the deployment. For example if we add a new non-nullable column to an existing table we need to populate that column with data during the insert. Other times we may want to create new records in transactional tables (e.g. assign specific users to a new security access). Do Visual Studio Database Projects have a way to store these scripts that only need to be run once and somehow include them in the build? Does it know which scripts need to be run (for example if we are inserting default data we don't want to do that again a second time)? OR Is there a better way to manage these scripts?

  I have discovered what seems, to me, like a bug in the June 2013 release of SSDT and given the problems that it created yesterday on my current gig I thought it prudent to write this blog post to inform people of it. I’ve built a very simple SSDT project to reproduce the problem that has just two tables, [Table1] and [Table2], and also a procedure [Procedure1]: The two tables have exactly the same definition, both a have a single column called [Id] of type integer. CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Table1] (     [Id] INT NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY ) My stored procedure simply joins the two together, orders them by the column used in the join predicate, and returns the results: CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[Procedure1] AS     SELECT t1.*     FROM    Table1 t1     INNER JOIN Table2 t2         ON    t1.Id = t2.Id     ORDER BY Id Now if I create those three objects manually and then execute the stored procedure, it works fine: So we know that the code works. Unfortunately, SSDT thinks that there is an error here: The text of that error is: Procedure: [dbo].[Procedure1] contains an unresolved reference to an object. Either the object does not exist or the reference is ambiguous because it could refer to any of the following objects: [dbo].[Table1].[Id] or [dbo].[Table2].[Id]. Its complaining that the [Id] field in the ORDER BY clause is ambiguous. Now you may well be thinking at this point “OK, just stick a table alias into the ORDER BY predicate and everything will be fine!” Well that’s true, but there’s a bigger problem here. One of the developers at my current client installed this drop of SSDT and all of a sudden all the builds started failing on his machine – he had errors left right and centre because, as it transpires, we have a fair bit of code that exhibits this scenario.  Worse, previous installations of SSDT do not flag this code as erroneous and therein lies the rub. We immediately had a mass panic where we had to run around the department to our developers (of which there are many) ensuring that none of them should upgrade their SSDT installation if they wanted to carry on being productive for the rest of the day. Also bear in mind that as soon as a new drop of SSDT comes out then the previous version is instantly unavailable so rolling back is going to be impossible unless you have created an administrative install of SSDT for that previous version. Just thought you should know! In the grand schema of things this isn’t a big deal as the bug can be worked around with a simple code modification but forewarned is forearmed so they say! Coding questions are typically a single method that does something (Think of it as fizzbuzz or reverse a string kind of question) We are planning on introducing an additional step where we give them a business problem and ask them to draw a flowchart, activity, class or a sequence diagram. We feel that our current interview process does not let us evaluate the candidate's thinking at a higher level (which is relevant for architect/senior level positions). To give you some context, we are a mid size software company with around 30 developers in the team. If you have this step in your interview process, how has it improved your interviewing veracity? If not, what else has helped you evaluate the candidates better from a technical perspective.

  I had my website on rohbits.com but for some reasons I had to delete it and recreate it with this URL wwww.rohbits.com/blog. My problem is that the old links are still visible on google search and when people click on those links, they land on a 404 Error page of the hosting company. I want to either delete all the previous data from the search engines or have an 404 Error page of my own so that I can tell my visitors where the actual website is. I have already redirected all the traffic which comes to rohbits.com to www.rohbits.com/blog but when they click on the expired links, they get this error page. • Dependency Management tool for REST endpoints

  I work in a Rest Oriented envrionment. The number of endpoints is quite large and span multiple applications. The dependencies between the endpoints are large in number as well and not very well planned. Applications have cyclic dependencies amongst each other. Unfortunately, there is no central location where all the endpoints are documented and declare dependencies ( the endpoints that they inturn call ). Is there a tool that will help in such dependency management. I tried searching for a tool online, but not know what such a thing would be called, I am unable to find anything. P.S. • How to get rid of crawling errors due to the URL Encoded Slashes (%2F) problem in Apache

  The Google web crawler has indexed a whole set of URLs with encoded slashes (%2F) for our site. I assume it has picked up the pages from our XML sitemap file. The problem is that the live pages will actually result in a failure because of the Url Encoded Slashes Problem in Apache. Some solutions are mentioned here We are implementing a 301 redirect scheme for all the error pages. This should make the Google bot delete the pages from the crawling errors (no more crashing pages). Does implementing the 301s require the pages to be "live"? In that case we may be forced to implement solution 1 in the article. The problem is that solution 1 will pose a security vulnerability..

But what I really want is to spend less time on actual coding, without losing control of the code quality.
