• Allow sudo on specific file from active directory group

  I have an Ubuntu Server 12.04 box that has active directory integration running on it. I want to allow a certain active directory group access to execute a script as sudo. I want to do something like this: %programmers ALL=NOPASSWD: /usr/local/bin/createSambaShare.php When I log in with my active directory user and issue groups I do not see the group programmers, but I am a part of the programmers group within active directory. I've set up the group under the Unix attributes tab and given it an id of 1000 and added my user to it. My first thought was that I needed to add the group to the Ubuntu box. When I tried to do that, it told me that the programmers group already existed. What am I missing here?

• Free OS with MS Windows Archetecture and capabilities

  Currently most of the PC users mostly depend on the windows OS and they would not go away from that beaus of the hand on usage knowledge about and also because of the look and feel habituation. But there are plenty of Linux base Desktop operation systems there such as UBUNTU, FEDORA. Users do not tend to go for those OSs (specially office environments) because most of the 3rd party software and tools (such as Photoshop, flash, Visual Studio) mostly can install only in windows operating system. So I'm thinking why we cant create a free OS same as Windows. That is capable to install software that created for windows. that can communicate with windows servers and exchange etc.. . Simply it should be a free OS with all the capabilities of Windows OS. How about your idea?

I am evaluating Ubuntu Linux as an alternate platform and would like to know the best stack for doing web development on this. Some of the points I am interested are outlined below PHP/Ruby/Python (What would you recommend?) Is Mono mature enough for any large scale development? Has anyone any real experience using Mono. • Why isn't Stripes popular, even though it's an awesome web framework?

  I'm new to Stripes. I worked on MVC frameworks like Struts 1.x and 2.x. When I started learning, its features are awesome and very lightweight; it has in-depth validations and offers easy integration with other frameworks too. There are no configurations and everything is simplified with annotations. I don't understand why Stripes is not popular compared with other Java web frameworks like Struts or JSF? I didn't find any drawbacks in Stripes. Any ideas why?

• How to retrieve old facebook/XMPP messages as well as new with kopete?

  I have been considering using Kopete to use Facebook chat instead of logging on to Facebook with a web browser. That way, I can integrate messages with my KDE desktop better. The problem is, when I open Kopete, I am unable to see messages that I recieved in Facebook while Kopete was not opened. I can only see messages that I sent or received when Kopete was open. The same thing happens in Outlook.com (which is a website that connects to Facebook), Pidgin software, and other instant messaging tools. So my question is, how can I receive these messages with a desktop chat application in KDE, such as Kopete? Facebook has made their API publicly available to developers, and KDE has its own Facebook integration plugin. So it would seem achievable.

• ADF Mobile Application in the Apple AppStore

  Hi, everyone: I would like to announce that there is now an iPhone App in the Apple AppStore that's built using Oracle ADF Mobile.  This app is the Hudson Mobile Monitor application for the iPhone, which allows you to monitor build status for the Hudson Continuous Integration server.  By default it points to the production instance of the Hudson CI server hosted at Oracle.  One of the key goals for ADF Mobile in general is to ensure an application built using ADF Mobile is compliant with Apple iOS SDK terms.  We designed the framework to ensure applications can go through the approval process - of course there are still things that can be done which would cause issues during the approval process, and we will be publishing more best practices in the coming articles. • Debian Stable vs Ubuntu LTS for Server?

  Quick question: Which is a better platform for a professional use server? Debian Stable or Ubuntu LTS? The third party software we plan to use, works on both. Which one is better on it own merits? Take into account things like the kernel (Ubuntu for example has its own custom kernel for servers), and other Ubuntu specific customizations. I keep switching back and forth, and I need to decide so I can recommend one or the other to a client. Right now, I think I am going to choose Debian Stable. Recently, I have had Ubuntu Server Edition 10.04.1 have a few strange issues... I have Ubuntu setup to do automatic updates via a simple script, and every few months or so, libapache2-mod-php5 gets removed because of conflicting packages... Thereby causing me to loose the php function of the web server. Debian Stable has not done anything like this.

• Silverlight Goes Mobile!

  The most exciting announcements from Mix 2010 last week for me were the release of the Windows Phone 7 Series SDK and the news that the platform utilizes Silverlight for the application development technology. From the press and exposure that the platform is being given and the experience that is promised it looks like the Windows Phone 7 Series could eventually compete with the iPhone. For me this is exciting as Silverlight can now be used to develop RIA apps, easily deployed desktop apps and mobile apps. As someone who delivers enterprise technology solutions this equates to a whole bunch of opportunity knocking at the door and asking to join the party.   I've seen various open source libraries (actually I've seen it for assets as well) having a home-baked license in the following manner : SomeGuy's License:1. You can use this code freely in commercial projects and modify it as you wish, but not sell it2. If you want to sell a modified version, drop me an email first, or give credits to me Edit: The above example is ambiguous, so I am giving another one, I want to know if 3 lines of license will hold some ground: SomeGuy's License:1. You can use this code in a commercial project as a 3rd party library2. You can't sell it as a derivative work I know that such license is not polished at all, for example the Creative Commons set of licenses seem to be short, but actually have some large legal stuff underneath it, but I wonder if at least some level of protection can be gained with a hobby license like that ? My question is, could this hold any ground in the court, or would the corporative lawyers of the company X tear it apart ?

• Isolated Unit Tests and Fine Grained Failures

  One of the reasons often given to write unit tests which mock out all dependencies and are thus completely isolated is to ensure that when a bug exists, only the unit tests for that bug will fail. (Obviously, an integration tests may fail as well). That way you can readily determine where the bug is. But I don't understand why this is a useful property. If my code were undergoing spontaneous failures, I could see why its useful to readily identify the failure point. But if I have a failing test its either because I just wrote the test or because I just modified the code under test. In either case, I already know which unit contains a bug. What is the useful in ensuring that a test only fails due to bugs in the unit under test? I don't see how it gives me any more precision in identifying the bug than I already had.

• How to have operations with character/items in binary with concrete operations?

  I have the next problem. A item can have a lot of states: NORMAL = 0000000 DRY = 0000001 HOT = 0000010 BURNING = 0000100 WET = 0001000 COLD = 0010000 FROZEN = 0100000 POISONED= 1000000 A item can have some states at same time but not all of them Is impossible to be dry and wet at same time. If you COLD a WET item, it turns into FROZEN. If you HOT a WET item, it turns into NORMAL A item can be BURNING and POISON Etc. I have tried to set binary flags to states, and use AND to combine different states, checking before if it is possible or not to do it, or change to another status. Does there exist a concrete approach to solve this problem efficiently without having an interminable switch that checks every state with every new state? It is relatively easy to check 2 different states, but if there exists a third state it is not trivial to do.

• Keyboard shortcuts don't work continuously

  First I had the problem of the keyboard layout resetting itself on each reboot from DE (german) to EN (us). I followed the advice of using dconf in order to make the DE layout my personal default (see Keyboard layout switches to English each time I reboot). However, after that, my shortcuts didn't work properly anymore. In Firefox, Kile etc. everything works fine while in Nautilus, copying/erasing/pasting is impossible even when I change the keyboard layout back to En (us). Also, I'm not even able to select multiple items using the cursor in Nautilus while every acts normal on the desktop. It's quite confusing. I've read about a similar bug (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/1226962) but since German is a latin language there is no appropriate solution given for my problem. Any help is really appreciated here. Edit: The third reboot resolved the problem so the shortcuts finally work in Nautilus again. Still, selecting multiple objects using the cursor isn't possible.

• Wireless connection shows up but can't connect to internet with an Intel WiFi Link 5100

  I'm using an Asus G50V and I'm completely new to ubuntu. I just installed it and can connect to the internet with a wired connection and through wireless from my windows vista that I installed wubi on, and I can connect to my wireless network, but I can't actually connect to the internet through my wireless network. Thanks in advance. Network controller is an Intel Corporation WiFi Link 5100 according to lspci if that helps Also, the connection somehow started working after I decided to unplug my ethernet cable for the third time and headed upstairs after giving up for the day.. not sure how it happened, but after restarting, the connection stopped working again.. Wifi works on 11.10, but stops working when I upgrade back to 12.04..

• Using an actor model versus a producer-consumer model?

  I'm doing some early-stage research towards architecting a new software application. Concurrency and multithreading will likely play a significant part, so I've been reading up on the various topics. The producer-consumer model, at least how it is expressed in Java, has some surface similarities but appears to be deeply dissimilar to the actor model in use with languages such as Erlang and Scala. I'm having trouble finding any good comparative data, or specific reasons to use or avoid the one or the other. Is the actor model even possible with Java or C#, or do you have do use one of the languages built for the purpose? Is there a third way?

  We have a large projects that have nearly 20 modules on it.We want to use WCF for business layer. We think three way to implement WCF our project: Use only one datacontract and one operation contract. Send ClassName, MethodName to operation and create class by reflaction then invoke the method in WCF side. Second way put all modules in one wcf application, and create their data contracts, operation contracts. Third way is create seperate wcf application for each module and host them seperatly. Which one is the best way? I need your ideas. TIA!

• Interface is too empty

  I have recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 0n my PC without any third-party software (cause i havent been able to get my dial-up to work). When i open Ubuntu after reboot, there is absolutely nothing on the desktop screen except for an 'Untitled' folder at the corner of the screen. There is no menu, no taskbars at the top whatever. I dont know why this is happening. The .iso from which i have booted amd installed Ubuntu is fine. I have already conducted an md5sum test and it was all fine. Looking forward to your response.
