• Cannot Connect To VMWare Guest OS Using Either RDP or VNC

  Hi, I have a PC (Windows XP SP3) with VMWare Workstation 7 installed. The VMWare hosts Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2. RealVNC (4.1.3) is installed on both OS'es. Both of them use Hamachi2. Host OS (WinXP) also runs ZoneAlarm Firewall. Hamachi network is set as trusted. My goal is to allow RDP and VNC connections to be made to the guest OS (Windows Server 2003). Both options work absolutely fine if I connect from the host OS. However I have problems when other computers from our Hamachi network try to connect the guest OS (Win2K3). 1) RDP connections. RDP window opens, shows black content and after 15-20 seconds displays following error: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_yQhsRRimgKU/TArRrtiteQI/AAAAAAAABZA/e96za-y9wzo/rdp_error.JPG 2) RealVCN connections. Users are able to connect but all they see is a black screen inside VNC window. At the same their input (keystrokes or mouse moves/clicks) are visible when looking at the console window of the Win2K3. I really appreciate any ideas on how to resolve mentioned problems. • 403.4 won't redirect in IE7

  I have a secured folder that requires SSL. I have set it up in IIS(6) to require SSL. We don't want the visitors to be greeted with the "must be secure connection" error, so I have modified the 403.4 error page to contain the following: function redirectToHttps() { var httpURL = window.location.hostname+window.location.pathname; var httpsURL = "https://" + httpURL ; window.location = httpsURL ; } redirectToHttps(); And this solution works great for every browser, but IE7. On any other browser, if you type in http://www.mysite.com/securedfolder it will automatically redirect you to https://www.mysite.com/securedfolder with no message or anything (the intended action). But in Internet Explorer 7 ONLY it will bring up a page that says The website declined to show this webpage Most Likely Causes: This website requires you to log in This is something we don't want of course. I have verified that javascript is enabled, and the security settings have no effect, even when I set them to the lowest level I get the same error. I'm wondering, has anyone else seen this before?

• How can I make the XAnalogTV xscreensaver fill my screen?

  I recently installed xscreensaver, as well as the additional/extra screensavers. Many of the OpenGL ones function correctly, going fullscreen as expected. However, for some reason, the XAnalogTV screensaver leaves two "blank" spots on the edges of my screen. If I manually launch XAnalogTV, it displays a window, which it fills correctly. When I maximize the window, the same effect occurs: the window maximizes, but the two edges of the screen are literally "transparent". This effect also occurs when the screensaver is set to fullscreen. For these reasons, I believe the problem may be related to the aspect ratio of the screen. The edges of the screen are literally "ignored", with nothing being drawn there. Specifically, note the transition between the maximized and full-screen screenshots (with the un-drawn whitespace shrinking as the vertical height has been increased). For reference, I am running Xubuntu 12.04 on a Dell Vostro 1520 (Intel P8600, Nvidia 9300M) with a 1440 x 900 display (16:10). I have also set the GetViewPortIsFullOfLies preference to true. Is there any way to force XAnalogTV to fill my entire screen? Alternatively, as I believe the problem is aspect-ratio related, is there any way I can get the screensaver to render larger than my display, and simply discard the extra pixels? Relevant screenshots (windowed, maximized, and full-screen, respectively): You can see in the last two that the scrollbar from Firefox is clearly visible, even though this is a full-screen screensaver.

• Lucid Lynx login issue

  Recently upgraded from Karmic to Lynx. Upgrade seemed to go well, no noticeable issues. I logged in, and my window manager wasn't starting. An application would appear, but sans control buttons and border, so figured the windows manager needed to be given a swift kick. Opened a web browser and a quick google had me run "metacity --replace &" and everything popped up. I re-ran the Compiz configuration tool to enable my rotating desktop cube to the way I liked it, and had to reconfigure my desktop switcher to the right number of desktops (although the first time I ran it, it crashed on the panel and reloaded...odd, but once it relaunched it seemed fine.) Today I installed updates, rebooted and logged in for the second time since my upgrade. Again, the window manager was dead, and my compiz settings were gone, and the workspaces were set back to four (and when I clicked on the preferences to change them, it crashed on the panel and reloaded again). Resetting everything made things look somewhat normal again. I'm guessing it'll work until I reboot again. Googling around isn't turning up similar complaints about Lucid Lynx and the window manager. Before I go deleting preference files, anyone else know of this kind of issue and what could be done about it? Or should I start taking the stab in the dark approach of deleting preference files hoping one of them is corrupt or has something unsupported in it that's throwing LL for a loop?

• How to avoid ugly dithering when running KDE over VNC?

  I'm currently setting up a new Xen paravirt domain running KDE (4.2.2, from Kubuntu 9.04). As I have been unable to get the virtual framebuffer working in it, I've decided to set up VNC (from the vnc4server package), and run KDE over Xvnc. This is all fine and good, and KDE starts up okay. However, all the colours look dithered, especially on the task bar and title bar, making them impossible to see. From my web searches, it appears to be because these items are drawn using Porter-Duff. This is especially the case when using the Oxygen style, and Oxygen and Ozone window titlebars (selecting these styles generates messages about Porter-Duff being unavailable); not using those styles at least makes most of the UI widgets and window titles usable again. But this doesn't solve the problem for the task bar, nor for the desktop, where the only theme available to me is Oxygen (this is under the "Desktop Settings - Plasma Workspace" window, just for reference). So, unless I have a way to use a non-Porter-Duff theme for those, it seems that KDE would still be unusable under VNC. So if someone experienced with KDE can advise on how to work around, or even fix, these issues, I'd appreciate it very much. :-)

• SSH client not showing prompt after successful login

  I'm having problems with my SSH client on Ubuntu 10.10. When I switch on my computer and open a Terminal and execute the command ssh user@host, it gives me a password prompt after which I enter the right password, I then get a prompt to execute my commands on the remote computer. Now the problem is, after a little while (probably around 10 minutes), the terminal window stops accepting commands (No matter what I type, nothing shows). Once this happens, I close the Terminal window and try to start all over again by opening another Terminal window. But this time around, after entering the right password, I don't get a welcome message or prompt. The cursor just keeps blinking on a new line. I ran the ssh command with -v parameter and the message I get after a successful login is: debug1: Authentication succeeded (password). debug1: channel 0: new [client-session] debug1: Entering interactive session. debug1: Sending environment. debug1: Sending env LANG = en_GB.utf8 Still the cursor keeps blinking on a new line without a prompt. However, Putty SSH client works perfectly on the same machine. Thank you very much for your time. Your help would be greating appreciated.

• Outlook 2007 message formatting - pasted images

  When you cut and past an image into a message window when composing a new email, the image will display as you would expect and formatting the image appears straight forward, However the pain happens when you click send. The recipient notices that the image will resize with the size of there outlook window. The original image size is ignored and no scrollbars appear. Howe do you stop this behaviour. When said image is pasted, say you want to place a graphic on top of the image such as an arrow. By using the ribbon, selecting the insert tab and choosing shapes, you go ahead and select the arrow shape and plonk it on to of the image, just where you want it, give it a nice colour and then send the email. As the recipient resizes there outlook message window, the image resizes but the shape remains where it was, now who wants that micros*a*ft! So, how do you A) make the shape resize with the image, so the shape stays where I put it in relation to the image, and b) stop the image resizing in the first place.

Reinstalled Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2003 using install CD. Outlook worked buit keep getting error message pop up each time I open Outlook. Hit ok. Error Message #2: The path 'Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2003' cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the installation package 'STDP11N.MSI' in a folder from which you can install the product Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2003." Hit ok. Back to error message #1 Hit close window Error message #3: Error 1706. Setup cannot find the required files. Check your connection to the network, or CD-ROM drive. • How to get Synergy working on Ubuntu 11.10 and Windows 7?

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit and Windows 7 64-bit, however, Synergy only works when a window (application or folder) is open and touching the edge of the screen where the mouse should "jump". In other words, if a window is open and maximized, Synergy works normally. Without any windows, the mouse does not jump to the other screen. My steps: (Ubuntu) apt-get install -y quicksynergy (Windows) Install Synergy (I've tried both 1.3.8 and 1.4.8 and both 32 and 64-bit) On Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit (Synergy Server config): ~/.quicksynergy/synergy.conf section: screens myubuntu: mywin7: end section: links myubuntu: right = mywin7 mywin7: left = myubuntu end On Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit: $ /usr/bin/synergys -f --config .quicksynergy/synergy.conf ... 2012-04-25T14:04:12 NOTE: client "mywin7" has connected /build/buildd/synergy-1.3.6/lib/server/CServer.cpp,287 (output hangs here) On Windows 7 64-bit: Synergy 1.3.8 Client on Microsoft Windows 7 x86 (WOW64) started client connecting to 'myubuntu': ###.###.###.###:24800 connected to server (output hangs here) At this point, things should work, but my mouse still can't change screens unless a window is maximized on my Ubuntu machine.   Ihave insatlled ubuntu 10.4 on my compuer with 6 cd drives. Now initiallyi had window server 2008 and i had to install marvel raid sata controller and then my window detected all 6 drives. Now ubuntu is detecting only 3 drives and i have not found marvell drivers for ubuntu bt i have drives for window 2008. • Strange IP address showing up with OS X ssh

I get this output from my dtrace window: CPU ID FUNCTION:NAME 0 18696 connect:entry execname: ssh pid: 5446 sockfd: 3 Port number: 22 IP address: 192.168.0.207 ====== 0 18696 connect:entry execname: ssh pid: 5446 sockfd: 5 Port number: 12148 IP address: 109.112.47.108 ====== ^C The first IP address I can explain (192.168.0.207), that's the machine I'm connecting to. But what's with the 109.112.47.108 machine? It doesn't show up in tcpdump nor netstat -an Is there something with my dtrace code or my understanding of how the connect system call works?

• Apps won't start after vanilla reboot

  I had Adobe and Norton nagging me to reboot, so I did that -- clicked Reboot from the Start button. Everything seemed pretty normal as it shut down and came back up, but once up a bunch of apps won't start. The first one I noticed was Firefox. It would flash the disk light normally, but never appear on the screen. Then I tried to bring up an OpenOffice Calc window and same thing. I tried to bring up MS Word, and the splash screen appeared, but never the main screen, and the splash screen just sat there, with a swirly over it. But I tried Solitaire, Notepad++, Paint, and several others, and they popped up just fine. And I'm typing this from IE 8, which, if anything, came up faster than usual. When I try to open up "Network and Sharing Center" the window appears, but nothing appears in it, and eventually it's tagged "not responding". When I kill that window I get (after a delay) "Windows Explorer is not responding", and when I say "OK" the screen resets. I tried rebooting again, and no joy -- same as before. Have done nothing particularly strange on this box, and it's not generally at significant risk for malware. I haven't installed anything new other than the afore-mentioned updates. One other thing: Several minutes after rebooting I get the message "Error: Unable to start Bluetooth Stack Service." The Bluetooth radio is turned on, and I rarely have anything Bluetooth attached, and I don't recall that I've ever seen this message before. Added: Looking at Event Viewer, I'm getting a lot of "The description for Event ID 1 from source xxx cannot be found." Is there any significance to this? Added: I'm looking at restoring from backup, but the procedure is, at best, unclear. Is it sufficient to restore from "Backup and Restore Center", or must I restore from the restore DVD first?

• Kindle (client) for Mac--text search or highlighting/notes?

  just so we're clear, i'm talking about the client/software version here--ie, that you install on your Mac or PC--not the device. The Kindle client was recently released for the Mac. I downloaded it and bought a couple of Kindle-edition books to view on this client. Astonishingly, two features i consider to be more or less essential to any ebook reader are missing in the Kindle client, either that, or i can't find them: (i) text searching; and (ii) highlighting text. First, does anyone know how to access the search feature? I'm aware of the "Go To" button at the top middle of the reader window--the options in that menu when you click the button are: "Cover", "Table of Contents", "Beginning" and "Location." "Location" requires that you type in an integer (but it doesn't correspond to page number--e.g., typing "167" brought me to the table of contents), not a search term. Second, there's a button on the upper right-hand corner of the window "Show Notes and Marks" yet i can't find any way to highlight text. The only kind of "note" or "mark" i have been able to record is to "bookmark" a page by clicking the "bookmark" button also at the top of the window.

• Throughput and why do ISPs sell too much bandwidth?

  I hope the question made sense how I worded it. :) I've been wondering, maximum theoretical bandwidth is measured as RWIN/RTT (Window size / round trip time) Source 1 and Souce 2 So if a major city only 100 miles away gives me a ping of 50ms, and I have the default 64kb TCP window size then my maximum throughput will be 12.5Mb/s. Everything further away would give me a higher ping and therefore a lower throughput. Is there any reason to buy something like FiOS with a 50Mb/s or greater connection? Will you ever be able to reach that kind of speed? I know you can increase the TCP window size to increase throughput, but it has to be at both ends which is a deal breaker because you can't control the server. I'm assuming other network protocols like UDP aren't quite as affected by latency as TCP is, but how much of overall network traffic does non-TCP make up vs TCP. Am I just misguided about how throughput works? But if the above is correct, then why should a consumer like me buy way more bandwidth than can be realistically used. Maybe the only reason is for downloading multiple things at once, or one thing from multiple servers/peers?

  I've been using emacs with AUCTeX mode to edit my latex documents for a few days now, but there's something that's really bugging me. As it should be, whenever I do C-c C-c RET it compiles the file, and if repeat the command it views the output in xdvi. It's also set to the mini-mode TeX-source-specials-mode, so instead of opening a new window in xdvi it only reloads the window that's already open, brings it to the front, and sends me to wherever the pointer was in emacs (forward search). Now here's the problem: Even though the xdvi window is brought to the front, it's not focused. Instead, the emacs windows stays with focus (and that's where any keyboard input goes). And I keep forgetting about that, which leads me to accidentally editing the source file while trying to navigate in xdvi. Not to mention I'm forced to alt-tab in order to focus xdvi, and alt-tab twice if I just want to get back to emacs. Is there a way around this problem? I just want xdvi to be focused whenever I run the view command from emacs.

• XAML and WPF - Passing Variables to XAML Windows

  Hi, I'm pretty new to WPF and i'm trying to load a XAML window and pass a variable to this XAML in its constructor or so, because i need it to load some items from this passed variable. • Detailed android activity lifecycle (onAttachedToWindow())

  I'm interested in android activity lifecycle and I would like to get more detailed description/documentation/reference than widely available basic (onCreate-onStart-onResume) one. My need comes from realizing that starting new activity (Theme.Dialog styled) from onAttachedToWindow() greatly improves response time if comparing to starting it from onCreate(). I wonder how this onAttachedToWindow() fits into whole android activity lifecycle. Official API ref description "Called when the window has been attached to the window manager" doesn't help a lot.
