• Is it worth investing time in learning to use emacs?

  Right up front: I do not want to start a religious war. I've used vi for as long as I can remember, and the few times I've tried to pick up emacs I've been so lost so quickly I've given up. Lots of people find emacs very powerful, however. Its programmability is somewhat legendary. I'm primarily doing Solaris+Java development, and I'd like to ask a simple question: will my productivity increase if I invest time in getting my head around emacs? Is the functionality that it offers over vim going to be paid back in productivity increases in a reasonable timeframe? Repeat: I don't want a "my editor is better than yours". I just want a yes or no answer as to whether it's worth investing the time or not. Will my productivity really increase?

• Calling a web service from a windows service

  I'm sure there's an elegant solution to the problem but I just can't get my head around it. I am trying to call a web service from within a Windows service. The web service is secured (using Windows authentication). The account that the windows service runs under does have the rights to call the web service but I can't figure out how to get those credentials and send them off to the web service. The web service is WCF and is hosted on the same machine (in IIS) as the windows service.

• Loading table sections when using headers

  I cant seem to wrap my head around this. I have googled, and overstacked for hours now looking for examples that i can relate to. What I have is two arrays. The name of my first NSMutableArray is "showDates". I have 3 objects in here. Object 0: "Today, May 20th" Object 1: "Tomorrow, May 21st" Object 2: "Saturday, May 22nd" Then I have my second NSMutableArray named "showTimes" I have about 15 objects in there with strings in each object. ( i hope that makes sense? ) Each object is structured like this: Object 0: showID @"98022" eventID @"833" showTime @"1:30pm" showDate @"Today, May 20th" auditorium @"9" venue @"2991" Object 1: showID @"98222" eventID @"813" showTime @"2:30pm" showDate @"Tomorrow, May 21st" auditorium @"9" venue @"2991" Etc, etc, .... I have the headers working great in my tableView, but I cant seem to figure out how to add the objects in my "showTimes" array under the correct header. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• MVVM where does the code to load the data belong?

  As I wrap my head around the mvvm thing, the view is the view, and the viewmodel is 'a modal of a view' and the model are the entities we are dealing with (or at least that is my understanding). But I'm unclear as to what and when the model entities are populated. So for example: Lets say I have app that needs to create a new record in a DB. And that record should have default values to start with. Who is responsible for the new record, and getting the default values. Does this have anything to do with MVVM or is that part of a data access layer? Who calls the the viewmodel? Or for existing records when\where are the records retrieved? And saved if altered? • Using list comprehension in Python to do something similar to zip()?

  I'm a Python newbie and one of the things I am trying to do is wrap my head around list comprehension. I can see that it's a pretty powerful feature that's worth learning. cities = ['Chicago', 'Detroit', 'Atlanta'] airports = ['ORD', 'DTW', 'ATL'] print zip(cities,airports) [('Chicago', 'ORD'), ('Detroit', 'DTW'), ('Atlanta', 'ATL')] How do I use list comprehension so I can get the results as a series of lists within a list, rather than a series of tuples within a list? [['Chicago', 'ORD'], ['Detroit', 'DTW'], ['Atlanta', 'ATL']] (I realize that dictionaries would probably be more appropriate in this situation, but I'm just trying to understand lists a bit better). • Is nothing truly ever deleted in git?

  I'm currently learning git, usually I'm a bit skeptic of VCS since I have a hard time getting used to them. I deleted a branch called "experimental" with some tmp files, I saw the files removed in my working directory so I scratched my head and wondered if this is normal, can I bring it back in case I need it again, etc. I found the SHA making the commit of the tmp files and recreated the branch with the provided sha and saw it again with all the files and their current content. Everything I do in the working directory can be reverted once I commit it? Might seem like a silly question to many people, but it kinda intrigues me so I want to know the limits

• Open Safari from within Opera Mini on the iPhone

  Now that Opera Mini is becoming so popular in the App store I want to effectively warn my web site visitors that the rendition they see in Opera Mini is far from what I meant them to see and redirect them to my page in Mobile Safari, so they can enjoy HTML5 and CSS3. I've been banging my head around that task all day long, but I can't seem to find a solution. My hope lies in the custom URL schemes, but seems Opera Mini handles all schemes which usually Safari does. Would be great if there's a scheme like safari://www.domain.com which opens ONLY in Safari, so I can redirect the visitors to it. Does anybody know a solution to that problem? --edit Just to make myself clear - browser detection is not the problem (I'm doing Javascript for 13 years now) the question is if there's a way to invoke the Safari app on the iPhone from within a web page which is being viewed in Opera Mini.

• Jquery code working in all browsers apart from FF

• Fadeout a tiled background image in load using JQuery

  Hi, I've used JQuery in the past to fade divs in and out successfully. However, I have encountered a situation I can't quite wrap my head around: I am coding a site for a designer who has based the formatting of all the elements on a grid pattern he's created. As he wants the pattern elements to be the same size independent of the browser window, I think I can only do this via a repeating background tiled image in CSS. Now he wants the background pattern (only) to come in dark and fade to very light, while not effecting any of the other elements. Am I right in thinking it's impossible to call a tiled background pattern using a CSS selector? Does anyone have any suggestions of a workaround to this problem?

  I’ve just started developing for iPhone and am trying to get my head around memory management. I made a small program that shows a map and an annotation on the map. For the annotation I made a simple class that implements the MKAnnotation protocol. To create and add the annotation I wrote this: [self.myMapView addAnnotation:[[MyAnnotation alloc] init]]; It worked fine until I tried to release the object. Nothing to release. This is what I would have done in C#, I guess it doesn’t work without garbage collection? So is this the only way to do it? • Issues with Firefox 3.6 & SWFObject 2.2

  I've searched the net for a solution but still haven't found one yet. I'm on Mac OSX and I use FlashBuilder. I try to publish a movie with the values of 100% for the width & the height. These are the values I use both in SWFObject and the CSS. Flash doesn't display in Firefox but displays on Opera, Chrome & Safari. SWFObject test suite displays fine though! I've tried to replicate the test suite settings but it doesn't work :( The only way I can get the movie to display in Firefox is by setting the height value to a fixed pixel size in the flash content div, which defeats the purpose of using percentage values in the first place :) I've tried most recommendations such as putting the script in the head tag as well as a few others but nothing works except setting a fixed height size in the CSS. Help would be most appreciated! ;)

  Hello All, Could someone please advise in the context of a ASP.Net application is a shared/static function common to all users? If for example you have a function Public shared function GetStockByID(StockID as Guid) as Stock Is that function common to all current users of your application? Or is the shared function only specific to the current user and shared in the context of ONLY that current user? So more specifically my question is this, besides database concurrency issues such as table locking do I need to concern myself with threading issues in shared functions in an ASP.Net application? In my head; let’s say my application namespace is MyTestApplicationNamespace. Everytime a new user connects to my site a new instance of the MyTestApplicationNamespace is created and therefore all shared functions are common to that instance and user but NOT common across multiple users. Is this correct?

• Debug Linux kernel pre-decompression stage

  I am trying to use GDB to debug a Linux kernel zImage before it is decompressed. The kernel is running on an ARM target and I have a JTAG debugger connected to it with a GDB server stub. The target has to load a boot loader. The boot loader reads the kernel image from flash and puts it in RAM at 0x20008000, then branches to that location. I have started GDB and connected to the remote target, then I use GDB's add-symbol-file command like so: add-symbol-file arch/arm/boot/compressed/vmlinux 0x20008000 -readnow When I set a breakpoint for that address, it does trap at the correct place - right when it branches to the kernel. However, GDB shows the wrong line from the source of arch/arm/boot/compressed/head.S. It's 4 lines behind. How can I fix this? I also have tried adding the -s section addr option to add-symbol-file with -s .start 0x20008000; this results in exactly the same problem.

I can't quite get my head around it: var i:Number = -1; do { i = Math.round(Math.random() * _totalQuestions); } while(_usedQuestions.indexOf(i)); Where _usedQuestions is an array of numbers. • Where do I put the links to my Javascript/jQuery files in my html file?

  I recently noticed that some (not all) of my javascript and jQuery scripts wouldn't work unless I put the link for the .js files nearer towards the bottom of the page instead of the head area where I put my links for my .css files. From what I understand, javascript can go in either places and it is recommended to not be put in the header as it slows down the page loading process as well. At the same time, if I put it in the body tag of the html file, it looks somewhat messy and was wondering what the best practice is for putting .js files in a cleanly place. Should I always put it at the very bottom right before the ending body tag? How do professional web developers handle this?

• What sort of object is this and how to use it?

  What would be the correct name for this type of array? There are 3 main sections and 4 sub-parts consisting of "issuedTime" "text" "url" and "validToTime", how do you start to convert this to an object? If there was only 1 main section, it would be fairly simple to do however with 3 main parts and no identification for each main section has me scratching my head as where to start. • mysql boolean joins

  I want to use a JOIN to return a boolean result. Here's an example of the data... t1 id | data | 1 | abcd | 2 | 2425 | 3 | xyz | t2 id | data | t1_id | 1 | 75 | 2 | 2 | 79 | 2 | 3 | 45 | 3 | So with these two tables I want to select all the data from t1, and also whether a given variable appears in t2.data for each id. So say the variable is 79, the results should be id | data | t2_boolean 1 | abcd | 0 2 | abcd | 1 3 | xyz | 0 So I'm thinking some sort of join is needed, but without a WHERE clause. I've been banging my head about this one. Is it possible? I really need it inside the same statement as I want to sort results by the boolean field. As the boolean needs to be a field, can I put a join inside of a field? Thanks...

• Standard Workflow when working with JPA

  I am currently trying to wrap my head around working with JPA. I can't help but feel like I am missing something or doing it the wrong way. It just seems forced so far. What I think I know so far is that their are couple of ways to work with JPA and tools to support this. You can do everything in Java using annotations, and let JPA (whatever implementation you decide to use) create your schema and update it when changes are made. You can use a tool to reverse engineer you database and generate the entity classes for you. When the schema is updated you have to regenerate these classes, or manually update them. There seems to be drawbacks to both, and benefits to both (as with all things). My question is in an ideal situation what is the standard workflow with JPA? Most schemas will require updates during the maintenance phase and especially during the development phase, so how is this handled?

  I created a marker interface: public interface ISupportAJAXPostsBacks{} I added it to my Page.. public partial class MyWebForm : PageBase, ISupportAJAXPostsBacks I have this check in my PageBase class... if(this is ISupportAJAXPostsBacks) { ... do some stuff ... } If I step through via the debugger, "this is ISupportAJAXPostsBacks" evaluates to true for the initial page load, but evaluates to false when an UpdatePanel posts back on that same page. (scratches head) What is happening under the covers to cause this and what can I do about it?

• Making archive from files with same names in different directories

  Hi, I have some files with same names but under different directories. For example, path1/filea, path1/fileb, path2/filea, path2/fileb,.... What is the best way to make the files into an archive? Under these directories, there are other files that I don't want to make into the archive. Off the top of my head, I think of using Bash, probably ar, tar and other commands, but am not sure how exactly to do it. Renaming the files seems to make the file names a little complicated. I tend to keep the directory structure inside the archive. Or I might be wrong. Other ideas are welcome! Thanks and regards!

  G'day guys, Trying currently to finish up a bit of homework I'm working on, and having an issue where I'm trying to apply map across a function that accepts multiple inputs. so in the case I'm using processList f (x:xs) = map accelerateList f xs x xs processList is given a floating value (f) and a List that it sorts into another List Accelerate List takes a floating value (f) a List and a List Object through which it returns another List Object I know my Accelerate List code is correct, but I cannot for the life of me get the syntax for this code working: processList :: Float -> [Object] -> [Object] accelerate f [] = [] accelerate f [x] = [(accelerateForce f x x)] accelerate f (x:xs) = map accelerateList f xs x xs Any ideas? I've been scratching my head for about 3 hours now. I know it's something really simple.

• htpasswd, secure specific files in zend framework

  Hi I have been bashing my head against the wall with this riddle and cannot find the way to solve this. I would like to secure couple of files to restrict access to certain pages but my attempts so far are unsuccessful. I do not want to use Zend Auth as it is a very small web site doing simple stuff.
