  • How do I correctly display special characters in my Firefox browser?

    (Firefox 3.6.13 on Windows XP) Every once in a while I notice an odd character on certain web pages when browsing the web. It is a outline of a box with a 4-digit number inside. And example of a page that has these characters is: http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/#highlights After each section heading (Elastic, Completely Controlled, ...) I see a box with the number "0096" inside. I looked at the cached version on Google, and google has &ndash; in it's place, so I'm guessing I should be seeing a dash there instead of the box with the numbers in it. I have tried changing the character encoding in Firefox but haven't been able to find one that shows these characters correctly. Is there a way to allow Firefox to view these characters? Thanks in advance!

In any case, it crashed my firefox 3.5.4. (or to be more precise, made it unusable) ... I don't know about other browsers.     I'm planning to build my own computer. I do not have enough cash to buy all components I need in one go. I want to ask, if I buy motherboard which is compatible with i7 processor (any) and compatible with graphic card Nvidia gtx 780, does it mean that this mother board will be compatible with processors (from intel) which will be released next year? Same for graphic cards? The point is that I'd like to avoid situation where I buy motherboard let's say now, and in couple of months there will be new graphic card/processor which will not be compatible with my mother board? Or maybe shall I start completely somewhere else?

  • How to make sure clients update their browser cache when my website is updated?

    I am using the HTTP 1.1 Cache-Control header to implement client-side caching. Since I update my website only once a month I would like the CSS and JS files to be cached for 30 days with Cache-Control: max-age=2592000. The problem is that the 30-day period defined by Cache-Control doesn't coincide with the website update cycle, it starts from the moment the users visit the site and ends 30 days later, which means an update could occur in the meantime and users would be running with outdated content for a while, which could break the rendering of the website if for instance the HTML and CSS no longer match. How can I perform client-side caching of content for periods of several days but somehow get users to refresh their CSS/JS files after the website has been updated? One solution I could think of is that if website updates can be schedule, the max-age returned by the server could be decreased every day accordingly so that no matter when people visit the website, the end of caching period would coincide with the update of the website, but changing the server configuration every day goes against one of my sysadmin principles (once it's running, don't touch it).

    I am looking for a tool, which helps me to organize my personal bookmarks. I want to be able to assign tags and free comments to a bookmark. I want to search my bookmarks by tags date of bookmarking pattern in title pattern in url It would be nice to be web based to enable sharing my bookmarks between different machines. But for it would be OK, if it works on a single machine as long as it has some import/export way to transfer the links to a new machine replacing the old. As browsers I'm using Firefox and ChromePlus. It would be nice, if the solution works with both browsers. With free comments, I mean additional remarks stored for a bookmark, which is not essential for searching.

  • Is there a way to disable beeps in chm browser and what's causing them?

    When browsing a .chm file, in search tab, when I click on each result I get a beep. I don't think there should be a beep every time I click on a search result. In any case, I'd like to just disable them. I know there is a way to disable the beeps system-wide, but I don't require that. It's not the "Start navigation" sound like used in Internet Explorer. This is truly a beep, like the one resulting when the pc is not responding, and one keeps pressing various keys on the keyboard, with each key press generating a beep. Besides, I have the windows "no sounds" scheme, meaning there shouldn't be event driven sounds.

  • CSS file not served by IIS 7.5 after multiple clear cache refreshes in a row in browser

    We are experiencing an interesting issue with IIS 7.5 static caching and a css file. When we use IE to hit the page in question everything works fine - 200 OK on css file. When we refresh the page it works fine - 304 Not Modified on css file. When I refresh again with control key it reloads fine - 200 OK on css file. Now if I do a control key + refresh multiple times in a row really fast the css fails to load and in the developer tools network it says "Loading..." for the css file and it hangs never coming back. Any ideas?

    I feel I should go into more detail. My wife and I share a laptop and browse email. Currently we keep coming back to each others gmail accounts, having to log out and log back in. Are there any good extensions or addons that would allow us to toggle back and forth between these? This does not necessarily need to apply to just gmail but include any cookie, session, etc. I'd be willing to use Firefox if such an extension exists on it as well. Much appreciated!

  • I can't enable extra effects in Ubuntu 10.10. Please help?

    I installed Ubuntu 10.10 alongside Ubuntu 11.10 to use an older version of Compiz. On Ubuntu 11.10, Compiz was enabled by default and I didn't need to use any graphics driver to enjoy the effects. All I had to do was install CompizConfig Settings Manager and enable those extra effects. That was Compiz 0.9.6. Now, after installing Ubuntu 10.10, when I first logged in, the graphics were slow. When I dragged a window from one end of the screen to the other, the whole screen would blur up and pixelate and it would be very laggy. I tried going to System Preference Appearance and selecting Extra effects on the Visual effects tab, but all I got was "Desktop effects could not be enabled". I don't know whether I should install the Additional drivers (proprietary) because my Internet is slow and it would take a long time. Furthermore, in Ubuntu 11.10, after I installed the proprietary graphics driver, I immediately went into fallback mode and wasn't even offered an option to set my desktop session to Ubuntu 3D. I didn't need the driver to run Compiz in Ubuntu 11.10, it just ran so smoothly. But in Ubuntu 10.10, everything is so laggy. Should I install the ATI/AMD Proprietary FGLRX Graphics Driver for Ubuntu 10.10 to enable extra effects? Or is there something else wrong with my system?   • Adding user role constraint redirects Browser to jsf.js script?

    My JSF form login was working with Constraint 1 however when I added Constraint 2 to my web.xml doing a submit on the form now takes me to a jsf javascript page. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? I would like only administrators to be able to access the /admin/* pages and only registered users to access the entire site included admin files. BTW after I see the java script page I can still navigate to the intended page in the browser, I just don't want the user to see the intermediate js page or need to know the target page URL.     Is there a way in JavaScript or MooTools to retrieve the actual text in the value from an input element without the browser interpreting any html special entites?     I am trying to connect to a socket server from flex. I read, on adobe's documentation, the client automatically sends a "request-policy-file" xml element to the socket before allowing it to be opened, and should receive a policy file. The client sends the xml element as expected, My server receives it (on the port I want to use, port 6104) and replies on the same port with: <?xml version="1.0"?> <!DOCTYPE cross-domain-policy SYSTEM "http://www.adobe.com/xml/dtds/cross-domain-policy.dtd"> <cross-domain-policy> <site-control permitted-cross-domain-policies="all"/> <allow-access-from domain="*" to-ports="*"/> </cross-domain-policy> To the best of my knowledge, this should be the most permissive policy available on a socket. The flash player logs indicate a timeout looking for the socket policy file, although I know my socket returned the response immediately. What should I do ?

    How to I get my security policy working? My parent swf parses an XML doc and loads 2 children. It throws a 2148 security error, and only works in the Flash IDE. I Also published my parent swf as 'network only' and put all the crossdomain.xml and everything else in the same folder. I need to click on the animations and have them place from a local computer at a kiosk. Any suggestions?   • How to let short content pages reach the bottom of the browser window and then a footer should appea

    In this case, I've developed a CSS code for this web application ..and sometimes the resulting data is too small and the footer of the site appears in the middle of the page and looks odd. I'd like to push that whitespace of the background to the browser's bottom and then followed by a footer. AND if the page is long, that text won't get overlapped by the footer. Can someone help me out with this code right here?   • SMB2 traffic crashes network?

    We've been having significant network slowdown issues over the past few weeks, primarily on a Friday morning. We run Windows 7 client machines, with Windows Server 2008 R2 servers. What generally happens is the network starts to slow down massively at 08:55 and resumes normal speeds at around 09:20 This affects everything on the network from logging on, resetting passwords, opening programs and files etc. On my client machine, Physical Memory usage remains at around 40% (normal) and CPU usage hovers around 0-10% idle. The servers show memory usage spikes massively and remains quite intense during the times mentioned above. I have taken several wireshark captures, both during the slowdown and when the network operates fine. One of the main things I noticed is the increase in SMB2 entries in the wireshark log during the slowdown. One of the interesting things to note is the last entry in the examples above is for a PDF file. That file was not open anywhere on my computer, or on anyone elses. No folders with the files in were open either. When I took another capture when the network was running fine, there were hardly any SMB2 entries, and the ones that were displayed were mainly from Wireshark. We currently have around 800 computers, 90 Macs and 200 Laptops and Netbooks. Our concern is if this traffic is happening on my computer, is it happening on other computers, and if so, would those computers be adding to the slow network issues? Again, this only happens during certain times. We're pretty sure its not the our antivirus. Is there anything to narrow down whats initializing this SMB traffic during the particular times? Or if anyone has any extra advice, or links to resources it would be appreciate.

  • How to delete the history and cache in Opera Mobile (10.1)

    I run Opera Mobile 10.1 on Android. My device is rooted. How can I clear the history and cache of the browser via shell? As su, removing /data/data/com.opera.browser/opera/profiles/smartphone/cookies4.dat /data/data/com.opera.browser/opera/profiles/smartphone/cache /data/data/com.opera.browser/opera/profiles/smartphone/cacheO and a /system/xbin/busybox killall -9 com.opera.browser afterwards doesn't seem to do the job. Afterwards, bookmarks etc. are still there. In Opera Mini I found it easy to just delete /data/data/com.opera.mini.android/cache/webviewCache /data/data/com.opera.mini.android/databases but unfortunately, Opera Mini in it's current version has a bug and doesn't work on most devices.
