• How to run a restricted set of programs with Administrator privileges without giving up Admin acces (Win7 Pro)

  I have a shared system, running Windows7 X64, restricted to a 'standard user' with no password. Not everyone who has access to the system has the administrator password. This works rather well, except for some applications - specially the unlock-applications for encrypted hard drives/USB flash drives. The specific ones either require Administrator access (eg. Seagate Blackarmor) or simply fail without it -- since these programs are sending raw commands to a device, this is to be expected. I would like to be able to add the hashes of these particular programs to a whitelist, and have them run as administrator without needing any prompts. Since these are by definition on removable media, I can't simply use a filename or even a path. One of the users who shares the system can be considered 'crafty', so anything which temporarily grants administrator rights to an user account is certain to cause problems. What i'd like to be able to do: 1) Create an admin account that can only run programs from a whitelist (or, failing that, from a directory) I can't find a good way to do this: As far as I can tell, SRP applies equally to ALL users? Even if I put a "Deny" token on all directories on the system, such that new directories would inherit it, it could still potentially run things from the mounted USB devices. I also don't know whether it's possible to create a new directory that DOESN'T inherit from the parent, that would lake the deny token, and provide admin access. 2) Find a lightweight service that will run these programs in its local context Windows7 seems to block cross-privilege level communication by default, and I haven't found such for windows 7. One example seems to be "sudo" (http://pages.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~nfriess/sudo/) but because it uses a WLNOTIFY hook, it won't work under Vista nor Windows7 Non-Solutions: - RunAs: Requires administrator password! (but everyone calls it "sudo" anyway) - RunAs /savecred: Nice idea, but appears to be completely insecure. - RUNASSPC - Same concept as RunAs, uses "encrypted" files with credentials, but checks in user-space. - Scheduled Tasks - "Fixed" permissions make this difficult, and doesn't support interactive processes even if it did. - SuRun: From Google: "Surun uses its own Windows service that adds the user to the group of administrators during program start and removes him automatically from that group again"

  So, every time I try to install .NET Framework 4.0 on my Windows XP Professional SP3 VMWare Player virtual machine, I get a fatal error. It doesn't work with either Windows Update, the Web Installer or the normal installer! I don't know if it matters (AND I HOPE IT DOES NOT), but the host OS's Operating System drive is encrypted, and the VM HDD file resides on that partition. I don't think it matters because other programs can be installed! And downloaded!

• Microsoft Word 2008 on the Mac sometimes "Disappears" documents, really.

  This happens in a computer lab environment, has happened at least 3 times. We are running Microsoft Office 2008 for mac on Leopard, everything is updated. Our user's home directories are on a network drive, but the /Library/Cache folder is running locally. Typically a student will have a Word file that they have been working on, it's been saved before they even logged onto the computer that day. They log on, open the document, click the save icon (not go to File Save), sometimes even save multiple times, then close Word. The document is now gone. It's not hidden, there are no autosaves or anything in the Cache folder. Definitely not in the trash or trashes folder. It can't find it when you click on it in 'recent documents'. Searching meticulously though every folder in their home drive turns up nothing. They look using Finder, I look ssh'd as root into their home using ls -la. I look for similar files in case they renamed it by mistake. It's gone. Disappeared. Vaporized. It's happened to at least 3 different users in the past year. Much whining. Any idea?

EDIT1: removing the "exit 0" part - this was just me typing without thinking first EDIT2: to add more detail on why do i need this: my developers write code for (for simplicity sake) 2 apps : ABC & DEF. every app is run in production by separate users usrabc and usrdef, hence have setup their $BIN, $CFG, $ORA_HOME, whatever - specific to their apps. so ABC's $BIN = /opt/abc/bin # $ABC_BIN in the above script DEF's $BIN = /opt/def/bin # $DEF_BIN etc. now, on the dev box developers can develop both ABC and DEF at the same time under their own user account 'justin_case', and I make them source the file (above) so that they can switch their ENV var settings back and forth. ($BIN should point to $ABC_BIN at one time and then I need to switch to $BIN=$DEF_BIN) now, the script should also create new sandboxes for parallel development of the same app, etc. this makes me to do it interactively, asking for sandbox name, etc. /home/justin_case/sandbox_abc_beta2 /home/justin_case/sandbox_abc_r1 /home/justin_case/sandbox_def_r1 the other option i have considered is writing aliases and add them to every users' profile alias 'setup_env=. .myscript.sh' and run it with setup_env parameter1 ... parameterX this makes more sense to me now

• How to turn a DSL wireless modem to a wifi hub

  I used to use DSL for my home internet and used Qwest Q1000 wireless modem. Now I switched to cable and use wireless router to cover the home. One problem is I just bought a desktop and I like to put it in a place far away from the router. The desktop only has cable interface, it does not receive wifi. The obvious solution is I go buy that little USB dongle which can receive wifi and plug it to the desktop. But before doig that, I am wondering if somehow I can re-use the Q1000 modem. The modem has 4 LAN ports and it has wifi antenna. I tried connecting the desktop to Q1000's LAN port, the system shows wire connection is in place, but I cannot access internet. It seems to me Q1000's wifi function is to broadcast the wifi signal out instead of receiving signal. I went to the Q1000 configuration page by going to web page of "192.168.0.1", it is not clear how to set it up. I also wonder one thing, my home wifi is encrypted, so if I want to let Q1000 to join the wifi, I need to somehow type in the password, I am not sure how to do that either. Anyway, maybe this thing cannot be used in this fashion. If you have any suggestion, please shed some light. Thanks.

In order to secure the administrative access, we implemented a redirect that when asking for the admin login page, you are redirected to the same URL, via SSL (http://site/administrator -- https://site/administrator ) Everything seems to work just fine, login and admin session is encrypted, but when running the extPlorer extension, the left sidebar loads, the main frame sticks at "Loading..." for ever. Removing SSL redirection works fine, but isn't what we desire.

  Would it not be a security risk to have phones connecting directly to our Exchange server rather than a front end server in a dmz? Also, we'd need to disable SSL on the Exchange Virtual Directory; would this cause the communications between the handsets and Exchange to be un-encrypted? Any advice would be appreciated!   There's a lot of infos about this out there, but there's also a lot of contradictory infos… That's why i need some advices about it. So far, on the servers i had home for test (or even "home production") purposes i didn't really care about partitioning and i configured all in / + a swap partition, over RAID 0. Nevertheless, this pattern can't apply to production servers. I have found a good starting point here, but also it depends on what the servers will be used for… So basically, i have a server on which there will be apache, php, mysql. It will have to handle file uploads (up to 2GB) and has 2*2TB hard drive. I plan to set : / 100GB, /var 1000GB (apache files and mysql files will be here), /tmp 800GB (handles the php tmp file) /home 96GB swap 4GB All of this if of course over RAID 1. But actually, it's not a big deal if I lose data being uploaded, so would it be interesting mounting /tmp over raid 0 while maintaining the rest over raid 1? Sounds complicated…

I'm a Java developer, if I put my program online for sale, what's a reliable and practical way to protect it ? How about something like this, would it work ? <1> I use ProGuard to protect the source code. <2> Sign the executable Jar file. <3> Since my Java program only need to work on PC [I need to use JDIC in it], I wrap the final executable Jar into an .exe file which makes it harder to decompile. <4> When a user first downloads and runs my app, it checks for a Pass file on his PC. <5> If the Pass file doesn't exist, run the app in demo mode, exits in 5 minutes. <6> When demo exits a panel opens with a "Buy Now" button. This demo mode repeats forever unless step <7> happens. <7> If user clicks the "Buy Now" button, he fills out a detailed form [name, phone, email ...], presses a "Verify Info" button to save the form to a Pass file, leaving license Key # field empty in this newly generated Pass file. <8> Pressing "Verify Info" button will take him to a html form pre-filled with his info to verify what he is buying, also hidden in the form's input filed is a license Key number. He can now press a "Pay Now" button to goto Paypal to finish the process. <9> The hidden license Key # will be passed to Paypal as product Id info and emailed to me. <10> After I got the payment and Paypal email, I'll add the license Key # to a valid license Key list, and put it on my site, only I know the url. And even if another hacker knows the encrypted Id is hidden in the html form input field, as long as it's not on my url list, it's still invalid. Can anyone find any flaw in the above system ? • EMERGENCY - Major Problems After Perl Module Installed via WHM

  I attempted to install the perl module Net::Twitter::Role::API::Lists using WHM and after doing so my whole site came down. It seems that something that was updated with the install isn't functioning correctly and since our website it written in Perl none of our site scripts will run. In almost 8 years of working with Perl I've never had any issues arise after installing a perl module so I have no idea how to even start troubleshooting.   I use HtmlHelper from CakePHP to create breadcrumbs navigation for my page... And i set $html->getCrumbs('separator', 'Home Page') to default.ctp and in other views i set $html->addCrumbs('nameLink', 'linkUrl'); All works fine! But when I open my Home Page there is no breadcrumbs, why?

  I've create a plain and siple backup script that only backs up certain files and folders. tar -zcf $DIRECTORY/var.www.tar.gz /var/www tar -zcf $DIRECTORY/development.tar.gz /development tar -zcf $DIRECTORY/home.tar.gz /home Now this script runs for about 30mins then gives me the following error gzip: stdout: File too large Any other solutions that I can use to backup my files using shell scripting or a way to solve this error? I'm grateful for any help.
