  • How can I keep the the logic to translate a ViewModel's values to a Where clause to apply to a linq query out of My Controller?

    This same problem keeps cropping up. I have a viewModel that doesn't have any persistent backing. It is just a ViewModel to generate a search input form. I want to build a large where clause from the values the user entered. If the Action Accepts as a parameter SearchViewModel How do I do this without passing my viewModel to my service layer? Service shouldn't know about ViewModels right? Oh and if I serialize it, then it would be a big string and the key/values would be strongly typed. SearchViewModel this is just a snippet.   • How to split this string and identify first sentence after last '*'?

    I have to get a quick demo for a client, so this is a bit hacky. Please don't flame me too much! :-) I'm getting a string similar to the following back from the database: The object of the following is to do: * blah 1 * blah 2 * blah 3 * blah 4. Some more extremely uninteresting text. Followed by yet another sentence full of extrememly uninteresting text. Thankfully this is the last sentence. I need to format this so that each * represents a bullet point, and the sentence after the last * goes onto a new line, ideally as follows: The object of the following is to do: blah 1 (StackOverflow wants to add bullet points here, but I just need '*') blah 2 blah 3 blah 4. Some more extremely uninteresting text. Followed by yet another sentence full of extrememly uninteresting text. Thankfully this is the last sentence. It's easy enough to split the string by the * character and replace that with <br /> *. I'm using the following for that: string description = GetDescription(); description = description.Replace("*", "<br />*"); // it's going onto a web page. but the result this gives me is: The object of the following is to do: blah 1 blah 2 blah 3 blah 4. Some more extremely uninteresting text. Followed by yet another sentence full of extrememly uninteresting text. Thankfully this is the last sentence. I'm having a bit of difficulty identifying the fist sentence after the last '*' so I can put a break there too. Can somebody show me how to do this?

    In C#, what's the best way to get the 1st digit in an int? The method I came up with is to turn the int into a string, find the 1st char of the string, then turn it back to an int. int start = Convert.ToInt32(curr.ToString().Substring(0, 1)); While this does the job, it feels like there is probably a good, simple, math-based solution to such a problem. String manipulation feels clunky. Edit: irrespective of speed differences, mystring[0] instead of Substring() is still just string manipulation

  • I have to manually change the DNS suffix order every time I connect to VPN. Can I change this permanently or fix the problem somehow?

    Sorry in advance but I'm a programmer, not a network engineer, so I'm a noob at this stuff. Anyway, when I am not connected to VPN from my work PC at home, I have the following DNS suffixes listed (real domain names substituted): enterprise.org network.org company.com us.enterprise.org After connecting to VPN, one more DNS suffix is added to the very top of the list: problem-domain.com At this point, most network functions that I can normally perform when actually connected to the LAN in the office are unusable. I get error messages about the network paths not being found and what-not. Anyway, I played around with the suffixes and realized that if I just moved problem-domain.com down one spot to the second in the list, all the problems went away. Unfortunately, it returns to the top spot every time I reconnect, and I tend to get disconnected frequently. Is there something else I can do about this or should I just contact the IT department? I've had this problem before and they weren't able to resolve it but I suppose it would be worth trying again if I could get a different person on the job. What I don't understand is that I thought it didn't matter what order the suffixes were in? Isn't Windows supposed to go through each suffix until it finds a match (or has gone through all the suffixes)? Why is it quitting after the first one? Thanks in advance.

  • MySQL stored procedure to INSERT DELAYED but CREATE TABLE first if needed?

    I'm planning on doing a lot of INSERT DELAYED into MyISAM tables. But the tables might not exist yet. Let's say e.g. a new table will exist for each day. So instead of detecting absence of table in my client and creating then retrying the insert, it seems like a good case for a stored procedure ("function"). Is this possible, and what would it look like? Are there any downsides to this approach?

  • Why does one column seem to load first in Wordpress?

    I have a Wordpress site that is doing something very bizarre. If you go to: http://digitaldemo.net/joy/krippen-a-b-c/ When it loads, the main content div loads on the right hand side of the page and then once the sidebar loads, THEN it gets pushed over to where it ought to be. It's only really noticable in Firefox, but I'd like to find out what is causing it and fix the issue. Any ideas? Many thanks!

  • How to perform a Depth First Search iteratively using async/parallel processing?

    Here is a method that does a DFS search and returns a list of all items given a top level item id. How could I modify this to take advantage of parallel processing? Currently, the call to get the sub items is made one by one for each item in the stack. It would be nice if I could get the sub items for multiple items in the stack at the same time, and populate my return list faster.   • The second floating div in chrome clears down before first div.

    Two divs are next to eachother, both floating left within a wrapper. In IE and firefox they appear correctly, but in Chrome, the 2nd floating div clears down below Div A. When I remove "float:left" in the css, it goes to the correct position in Chrome, but clears down in IE and firefox (as it should). I dont know why it is appearing this way in Chrome. Any ideas?

  • Is it possible to log the first line of the response in apache?

    Hey, We have an Tomcat server where we're trying to log the HTTP version which the response is sent with. We've seen a few times that it seems to be HTTP/0.9, which kills the content (not supported I guess?). We would like to get some stats on this by using the access log in apache. However, since the header line for this isn't prefixed by anything, we cannot use the %{xxx}o logging. Is there a way to get this? An example: Response is: HTTP/1.1 503 This application is not currently available Server: Apache-Coyote/1.1 Content-Type: text/html;charset=utf-8 Content-Length: 1090 Date: Wed, 12 May 2010 12:53:16 GMT Connection: close And we'd like the catch HTTP/1.1 (alternatively, HTTP/1.1 503 This application is not currently available. Is this possible? We do not have access to the application being served, so we need to do this either as a Java filter, or in the tomcat access log - Preferably in the access log.

  • Where to start with the development of first database driven Web App (long question)?

    Hi all, I've decided to develop a database driven web app, but I'm not sure where to start. The end goal of the project is three-fold: 1) to learn new technologies and practices, 2) deliver an unsolicited demo to management that would show how information that the company stores as office documents spread across a cumbersome network folder structure can be consolidated and made easier to access and maintain and 3) show my co-workers how Test Drive Development and prototyping via class diagrams can be very useful and reduces future maintenance headaches. I think this ends up being a basic CMS to which I have generated a set of features, see below. 1) Create a database to store the site structure (organized as a tree with a 'project group'-project structure). 2) Pull the site structure from the database and display as a tree using basic front end technologies. 3) Add administrator privileges/tools for modifying the site structure. 4) Auto create required sub pages* when an admin adds a new project. 4.1) There will be several sub pages under each project and the content for each sub page is different. 5) add user privileges for assigning read and write privileges to sub pages. What I would like to do is use Test Driven Development and class diagramming as part of my process for developing this project. My problem; I'm not sure where to start. I have read on Unit Testing and UML, but never used them in practice. Also, having never worked with databases before, how to I incorporate these items into the models and test units?   • select list modified on-the-fly doesn't fire onChange() for new first element.

    In the code below, I'm using jquery 1.4.1 to modify the options in a select list when the user clicks on the list (replacing the single Old item with three New items). Selecting either New 2 or New 3 correctly fires the change() method (and show the alert), but selecting "New 1" does not. What am I missing?     Hi I have a grouped table with two sections where I display text with different length and therefore cell height. I have solved the problem with the different length/height with constrainedToSize in cellForRowAtIndexPath. Now I want to add a section with one single row in which I want to show a picture. How should I best implement that? (still a bit of a beginner with the Objective C) I would guess that I would have to create an UIImageView and somehow link that to the cell, but my biggest concern is how do I do with the dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier now that I will have two different type of cells? Appreciate any advice that will help me save time from trial and error!
