  • Programming Language vs. Game Engine [on hold]

    I understand that this question has been asked multiple times before. I am just asking this quick and simple question. I have been learning programming in C#, Java and C++ for the past 6 months; Just experimenting with each. I think that C++ is the one that I like most. What I would like to know and am wondering about is should I learn a programming language and use a 2D framework like Allegro; Or should I learn Unity and make 2D games in that because it is probably faster and easier. I want to learn something that I can get pretty good at, seeing as I am pursuing a career in indie game development. I also have a programmer's mind set and I am a left brain thinker so learning a language is not a issue. I just want to best and most future proof choice. Thanks.

    Possible Duplicate: Why are statements in many programming languages terminated by semicolons? I just found out that R Programming Language, which is somewhat belong to the C family (I'm not sure about this but it uses {} instead of begin end), uses a new line as a delimiter for a new line of code instead of the semi-colon ;. Why is some programming language designed to use a new line instead of a symbol like semi-colon which I think will make the code more readable?     I get 18,000 access denied error showing in Google Webmaster Tools every day! So strange it shows for URL's with www and not no-www. Fetch as Google works perfectly for pages got that error. Google starts to downgrade my website - impressions have dropped from 35,000 to 18,000. I am using cloud flair CDN and .htaccess mod_rewrite. Any help will be extremely appreciated as I am really loosing control.

    I'm building a prototype of a device that will function much alike a digital photoframe. It will display images retrieved from the internet. The device must start up and run the photoframe. It will have no user interface. The device has a minimal ubuntu installation, but I could install Xorg or whatever needed. Question: I have trouble figuring out which programming language will be suitable. I've just started using Python to try out several things and I am able to download and display images. I guess that means Python can do what I'd like, but is it suitable as a language that will be run on boot without any user interference? Related questions: - How do I set up Linux to start that script automatically? - How to setup a second Python script as a server that runs in the background to retrieve images before they are displayed (Because I think I'll need threading of some sort?)

    ok first I'm not sure if this is right stackexchange site to ask but I'm not sure if there is better one as question is quite general When I visit one site, and if this site runs google adsense campaign, I can see its ads on other sites. I suppose this is cookie from this site and than it's showing ads using the cookie However, I removed this specific cookie and cleared cache, and I can still see this same ad showing on other sites running adsense My question is, is there is something wrong with google chrome, is there a possibility that Google stores data within google chrome itself? If not, how else they could trace which ads to show?

    While making a Pong clone with a friend, we had to implement some collision detection. For research purposes, my friend dug up a book called "AdvancED Game Design with Flash" by Rex Van Der Spuy. This book was clearly targeted at implementing collision detection in ActionScript, and I also have some problems with how the concepts are presented, e.g. presenting one method as better than another, without explaining that decision. Can anyone recommend some good material on collision detection? I'd prefer it if kept the implementation details as language-independent as possible, e.g. by implementing the concepts in pseudo-code. Language-specific materials are not completely unwelcome though, though I'd prefer those to be in either Java, C#, F# or Python or similar languages, as those are the ones I'm most familiar with. :-) Lastly, is there perhaps widely known and used book on collision detection that most people should know about, like a 'the book on collision detection'?

    Let me explain. Let's say my keyword I want to optimize is "green giraffes". But the domain greengiraffes.com (singular, plural, no hyphen, hyphen, etc.) is not available. I know that the search results for "green giraffes" and "about green giraffes" are essentially the same because "about" is a "stop word". Does that therefore also mean that the domain name "aboutgreengiraffes.com" is as good as "greengiraffes.com" in terms of SEO value? Are all stop words equal in that regard, or a shorter one (such as "e" or "z") is better?

    I asked this on stack overflow and was suggested to move it here. I do understand it is a matter of opinion which is exactly what I aim to achieve here... I wanted to know what you think is the best language to write a fulfillment engine in? I cannot provide much detail but I am trying to build a control interface for servers and i wanted to build a program daemon that would process data on the authoritative server and the slave servers( the backbone of the network) with their own daemons running would check regularly(every 5 minutes or so) with the authoritative server and process the commands(securely) I am trying to build this with a minimal footprint(cpu and ram wise for the slaves, authoritative is going to be scalable) and to make it automated so that the user does not have to configure the daemon(installation is automated by the authoritative server) I am leaning away from my usual php set up for simplicity sake. Edit: I am not an expert in any particular language but flexible enough and willing to learn another.

    Say I have a simple structure: app = webapp2.WSGIApplication([ (r'/', 'pages.login'), (r'/profile', 'pages.profile'), (r'/dashboard', 'pages.dash'), ], debug=True) Basically all pages require authentication except for the login. If visitor tries to reach a restrictive page and he isn't authorized (or lacks privileges) then he gets redirected to the login view. The question is about the routing design. Should I check the auth and ACL privs in each of the modules (pages.profile and pages.dash from example above), or just pass all requests through the single routing mechanism: app = webapp2.WSGIApplication([ (r'/', 'pages.login'), (r'/.+', 'router') ], debug=True) I'm still quite new to the GAE, but my app requires authentication as well as ACL. I'm aware that there's login directive on the server config level, but I don't know how it works and how I can tight it with my ACL logic and what's worse I cannot estimate time needed to get it running. Besides, it looks only to provide only 2 user groups: admin and user. In any case, that's the configuration I use: handlers: - url: /favicon.ico static_files: static/favicon.ico upload: static/favicon.ico - url: /static/* static_dir: static - url: .* script: main.app secure: always Or I miss something here and ACL can be set in the config file?     According to the an article on ArsTechnica the judge of the case ruled that APIs are not patent-able. He referred to the structure of modules/methods/classes/functions as being like libraries/books/chapters. To patent an API would be putting a patent on thought itself. It's the internal implementations that really matter. With that in mind, Mono (C# clone for Linux/Mac) has always been viewed tentatively because, even though C# and the CLI are ECMA standards, Microsoft holds a patent on the technology. Microsoft holds a covenant not to sue open source developers based on their patents but has maintained the ability to pull the plug on the Mono development team if they felt the project was a threat. With the recent ruling, is Mono finally out of the woods. A firm precedent has been established that patents can't be applied to APIs. From what I understand, none of the Mono implementation is copied verbatim, only the API structure and functionality. It's a topic I have been personally interested in for years now as I have spent a lot of time developing cross-platform C# libraries in MonoDevelop.     i am new on blogging webmaster Tools. When i usually add new post to my blog, it will automatic updated my homepage also. But from last 14th January, my homepage won't update by Google SEPR. As a result i am losing my popularity on SEPR. Previously when i post new article, 70-80% will go to the first page result. But after the problem occurs, none of them reach in top 15page of Google SEPR :( Last 1/12/12, Google webmaster sent me a "Notice of DMCA removal from Google Search" massage to indicates one of my URL that contains some infringing content which i deleted after receiving their notice. Not only that, i also cheeked all of my posts if there any additional infringing content available. After removing that, i fill out Google's Content Removed Notification form to notify them and Google also sent me a feedback that they received it and suggest "In the future, if you have removed the allegedly infringing content from your site (and won’t put it back), please use the correct form" which also i filled up. Now my question is that, Is everything alright which i did before? Although my new posts are indexed in GSEPR with ".." but why Google Robots.txt won't update my homepage which previously automatically updated when a new article was published.

    I want to know how to change the default font that is used when inputting a particular language. I use the Khmer language frequently, and the default font installed comes from the fonts-khmeros-core package. The fonts are fine, except that there better fonts. Once I install my beloved font, how do I cause Ubuntu to use that font instead of the ones from the package? Additionally, if you remove the fonts-khmeros-core package, and have only the custom font installed, the custom font will not be used by default, even if no other Khmer fonts are installed. However, when you install that package, those fonts are immediately used by default. Any ideas? Thanks.

It doesn't include everything on the site though, just blog posts. Creating a full sitemap would be a bit of a hassle I think. Should I submit the feed instead? Is there a difference between using a regular sitemap and a feed? Is it important to have a sitemap? What happens when you do/don't?
