• Application lens as default

  I want to open the Application lens in the Unity Dash as the default lens, since I much more open a programm then searching for a wikipedia article, the weather or anything else the home lens offers. Here How do I show the Applications Lens By Default? and here What are Unity's keyboard and mouse shortcuts? are the same questions, but the suggested answers don't work anymore on Trusty. I know that I can open the application lens with Super + A but I just would like to press Super to open it. An alternative would be to only get online suggestions whe partikular asked for them, but even though I just select the application scope in the filter section I get some useles online results. Btw. I don't want to open the online search results in generall, since I just reactivated them to try it out.

  Hello, I am trying to use my own function to get the file size from a file. I'll use this to allocate memory for a data structure to hold the information on the file.   I saw this by Adam on Twitter today: Interesting. Let's try it. Here's my method "getCustomerId". I select it, right-click, and choose "Find Usages" (or press Alt-F7): A nice dialog appears: Then click "Find" and, guess what, this is what I see (click to enlarge it): Clearly, as you can see, I'm not only finding the Java controller class where the getter is used, but also the Facelets files, and, within those, the exact lines where the JSF expression language makes use of the getter. This is not a new feature, tried it and got the same result in 7.1.1, but it's really cool to know about nonetheless.

Is it possible to make the return type flexible so that it would return an int, or long, or any other type considered smaller by "<" without being type casted?

• replacing kernel on non-booting ec2 instance

  So I had an amazon ec2 instance crash during the update to 14.04LTS. Frustratingly, it appears the kernel might be bad (or at least that's what the log below says to me, I could totally be wrong). I'm able to mount the volume to another, working server, chroot the broken volume, and sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-3.MOSTRECENT. Unfortunately though, when I try sudo update-grub, it comes back with /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?). What am I missing? • Installing Ubuntu, Switches of to intergrated Graphic Card

  I got a problem. I'm willing to dual boot ubuntu 12.04 on my desktop. After i made a bootable USB ubuntu on it i'm going to install it. I boot it and I choose Install ubuntu roughly said. The problem is the following, It seems that when i press enter to start the install he switches of to my intergrated graphic card. I looked up in my bios what my primary graphic card selection is and it was on PCI Express (the option it supossed to be). So I'm clueless right now. I don't know how to fix this because I'm quite learning linux atm (school and by myself). Your faithfully, Clenn

• How can I have my VPN connect automatically when the wireless connects?

  I have a working VPN connection using NetworkManager, OpenConnect, and the network-manager-openconnect-gnome package, but I have to start it manually every time I connect to a network, and I have to enter my password manually each time. How can I get it to connect automatically, and remember my password (securely)? I have checked the 'Connect Automatically' box on the Configure VPN page, but this seems to have no effect. I've also got the 'Start connecting automatically' box checked in the pop-up box, and that does avoid the need to press the connect button in that window, but seems to have no part in kicking off the whole process in the first place. There is no option to remember the password in the window, but maybe there's one somewhere else?

• "Unclutter" units in RTS game

  For intentional reasons, certain units in the game I'm currently programming don't have any collision detection and response among each other. This enables them to clutter right on top of each other. This is a wanted behavior, since there will be situations in the game when the player does want them to stack like that. However, I want to make the process of uncluttering them easy for the player, so that they just have to press a hotkey or click some button on the screen and have the units disperse just enough so it's easy to select a group of them with the mouse (if they stand on top of each other one mouseclick selects all units). How could I do this without running a brute force N^2 nearest neighbor search on all units?

• Hibernate option doesn't appear in the shutdown menu(s)

  In 13.04, I enabled hibernation by following these instructions: You can also enable the hibernate option in the menus. To do that, use your favorite text editor to create /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla. Add the following to the file and save: [Re-enable hibernate by default] Identity=unix-user:* Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate ResultActive=yes It worked fine in 13.04, but after upgrading to 13.10, the "hibernate" option no longer appears in the top right corner shutdown/login menu and neither in the menu that comes up when I press the laptop's power button (image here). Yes, I have checked that the the .pkla file is still there untouched. What could be the problem? Hibernate itself still works when I do it from the terminal with pm-hibernate. Edit: similar question: Hibernation is still missing from menu in 13.10 after enabling via polkit. How to enable?

• Black screen white cursor and can't boot from live disc that I installed from just yesterday (Ubuntu 12.04)

  So, I've decided to change to Ubuntu from Windows 7 after reformatting. Install goes smoothly, I've set everything up, and it works for a day. It crashed when I had a full screen video, froze, so I rebooted, and now I can't get past the black screen with flashing white underscore cursor. If I wait a while, I get "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press any key" I've tried that, removed any boot options but the DVD drive, even tried my Windows 7 boot CD as well. Nothing boots, so I can't do anything. This is on an Asus A52N laptop, and all I can access now is the BIOS (version K52N 217), as far as I can tell.

  Hey i have issue regarding jump sprite body. In my code i am using moveLeft and moveRight Button and when i am press moveRight Button using following code if (moveRight.active==YES) { b2Vec2 force=b2Vec2(4,0); ballBody->SetLinearVelocity(force); } Its move perfectly and When i release this Button than sprite body stop using following code else { b2Vec2 force=b2Vec2(0,0); ballBody->SetLinearVelocity(force); } But when i put this else part then jump can not done. • How often should saving to disk occur in an automatically saving text editor?

  I am developing a simple text editor and would like the application to save the text automatically. In other words, the user would never have to press a save button. I have seen other applications that do this, and was wondering how often is it safe to write files to disk? From a user experience standpoint, it seems that the more frequently this happens the better, but I am worried about performance and possible disk wear (especially on writes to SSDs). It seems like the operating system disk caching might help avoid these problems, but I also don't know if its safe to rely on that for an application like this. I was planning on writing the whole document to disk at each save, but this just seems terribly inefficient if the OS ends up writing it to disk to frequently, but relying on program unload may lose data in the case of a crash. Does anyone have any experience dealing with this that might be able to help?

  Possible Duplicate: Good resources to understand how a program interacts with machine hardware I don't know if this is the correct StackExchange site to ask this question. But I could not find any other. I want to understand how a computer works from the software level to the internal structure. For example what happens when I press a button on keyboard. The OS interprets it and then what changes happen in the flip-flops. How is an operating system written? If it is written using some programming language, then how is that interpreter written. At some point it has to come down to the hardware, right? I know to program in c, c++ and java. But after all these years I am still not sure about what is happening inside. I would be grateful to anyone who points me to to a link or a video that explains this to the deep.

• No sound after clean install

  Did a clean install of Ubuntu 12.10 and everything working great except for the sound. Ubuntu doesn't even seem to be recognizing the fact my HP dv6000 has the capability of making sound! I have the dummy output problem, and when I try to open alsamixer using terminal I get the message that no such file or directory exists. I can't get it to recognize any soundcards or audio devices at all. I've been working on the problem for a couple days now and have even taken the laptop apart to ensure that all cables are properly attached... When I go into the PhoenixBIOS there are no sound options that I can find. The laptop does make a loud beep if I press buttons in the BIOS, but once it boots to the hard drive, the thing is mute. HELP!

  Hello, we have a vb.net application with send and receive mailing also. Now we have added a session timer of 30 min but the users are complaining that they are facing a problem when they write a long text message or while composing they get busy in something else and when they return back to continue composing message , they are redirected to a session expiry page, and their long text message is gone forever. So I am new to this and I was thinking like , when the user is in compose message the text should be automatically saved to drafts like hotmail. Any help will be appreciated . Thank you.

  I am personalising my Gnome-Shell in Ubuntu 11.10 I would like to disable the feature to open the Gnome's Dashboard when I close the last Window in a Workspace. Edit to clarify: The dashboard is available only in GNOME Shell. The dashboard opens if you press the windows key (aka SUPER) or if you move the mouse to the upper left corner. If you close the last window of a workspace, but there are open windows on other workspaces, the dashboard opens automatically. The latter behaviour is annoying if you do not want to use the dashboard to open new windows or to change workspace. There are many ways to to both (Gnome do, Docky, keyboard shortcuts, clicking on something on the desktop, ...). • Dirty Reads in Postgres

  I have a long running function that should be inserting new rows. How do I check the progress of this function? I was thinking dirty reads would work so I read http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.4/interactive/sql-set-transaction.html and came up with the following code and ran it in a new session: SET SESSION CHARACTERISTICS AS SERIALIZABLE; SELECT * FROM MyTable; Postgres gives me a syntax error. What am I doing wrong? If I do it right, will I see the inserted records while that long function is still running? Thanks

• Apple Push Notification Feedback Service - how frequently does it check

  I have been able to successfully create push notifications and I have also received responses from the feedback service, so I am confident that my configuration is correct, but I was wondering, how long after a device has been made inactive, will it be picked up by the Apple Push Notification Service. When I first polled the feedback service, I received details on devices which were inactive several days ago. Now, while testing, when I uninstall the application and occasionally poll the feedback service, I'm not receiving any results. Any idea on how long it takes to update would be useful, as I'm no longer sure if the issue is else where in my code or if I'm just testing too soon. Thanks in advance

• Sometimes new windows don't come to the front when launched

  I'm using gnome shell with new ubuntu for few days now and have experienced really annoying behaviour with new windows. Sometimes when I use another window and press e.g. Alt Ctrl T to open new terminal window, I don't get this window being brought to front. Instead I get notification at the bottom that "New terminal window is ready to use". The same is with Pidgin being integrated with gnome shell (via extension). Every time I get new message, window pops up but doesn't show. I need to either Alt Tab it or click the notification. Is there any way to have new windows being always brought to front, and remove those annoying "Window is ready" notifications? • ASUS EeePC Fn+F2 ruins wireless until restart

  I managed to get my wireless working beautifully (ath5k driver working great), and it works over a disable/enable wireless cycle, even a suspend/wakeup cycle (read some people have issues with that). Unfortunately, I discovered that if I press Fn+F2 on my keyboard (Asus EeePC 900HA, so that's the wireless toggle key), wireless then stops working until I restart the computer. How can I fix this? I'm running UNR 10.10 (with Unity turned off tyvm!). I heard something about Jupiter controlling these keys, but what about asus-laptop? How can I fix this behaviour? TIA. (Note, I'm a power user, but still fairly new to Linux. I'm picking up speed though).

  I find that I tend to write long source files in F#. Some open source projects in F# also have long source files, e.g. FPersec and F# for excel. So it would be very helpful if code folding (even very limited support) is available in VS for F#. E.g. in a module, we can fold out functions that are stable, only leave functions that are subject to change unfold. Is this feature easy to be supported, e.g. by a third party vendor?

• Rotate object Up/Down/Left/Right in any orientation

  I'm rendering model at the origin with a fixed camera looking at it positioned on the z axis. I want to be able to rotate the model up/down and left/right. Currently I have 2 variables, HorizontalRotation and VerticalRotation. When calculating the world matrix I rotate about the Y axis by HorizontalRotation and about the X axis by VerticalRotation. The ..Rotation variables are controlled by pressing up/down/left/right arrow keys. The problem I'm having is that the rotations are happening relative to the object. Lets say it's a model of the world. Pressing Up a bit would let me look at the north pole. Currently when i press right the earth spins infront of the camera on its axis; I'm still looking at the north pole. How can i get it so that no matter what rotations are currently applied i can always rotate my model relative to the camera/world axis?
