• Using ModalAlert from cookbook - app does not load

  I'm using iphone cookbook code to prompt a user for text in a UIAlertView. The cookbook code is available at http://github.com/erica/iphone-3.0-cookbook-/tree/master/C10-Alerts/03-Soliciting%20Text/ In my AppDelegate, applicationDidFinishLaunching(), I invoke as below NSString *str = [ModalAlert ask:@"what is your name?" withTextPrompt:@"ATTUID"]; But my app does not finish loading at all. I get a black screen indefinitely. There are no messages in the console. I tried creating just a UIAlertView with UITextField in the above function and it displays properly. (commenting out her code) Commenting out "CFRunLoopRun()" also loads the app. I'm probably doing something stupid but can't seem to figure it out.

I assume that this is the reason for the latter error that I don't have a database configuration. • Unable to access LinkedIn conections using python rauth library

  I was trying out this example at https://github.com/litl/rauth/blob/master/examples/linkedin-web.py I get a 403, Access to connections denied error and it returns KeyError: '_total'. r_network option is present. Has anyone faced this issue? Also if you look at http://docs.python-requests.org/en/latest/user/quickstart/#oauth-authentication, the 'requests' library is initializing resource_owner_key, resource_owner_secret apart from the application keys. Not sure how these are getting passed from the 'rauth' library, Was wondering if that was causing this 403 error.

• Displaying a To-Many Relationship in a Table View

  I've got an application I've been working on. There are projects and employees, projects can have several employees, employees can work on several projects. Right now I want selecting a project to display which employees are related to it, and allows me to add employees I select from another full-roster list. Somehow, this has proven more complicated, because (at least for now), selecting different projects still displays the same list of employees, as if all employees who'd been assigned to any project, belong to all of them. What part of Master-Detail am I missing?

• Weird behavior of an ASP.NET MVC application - track of errors

  Before migrating from ASP.NET WebForms I had a very good way to monitor all my application errors in the Events Log (Administrative Tools). But now after moving to asp.net MVC, all I get is the same mistake occurring every minute (something about Site Master). I know it's not right, because there are other mistakes, but they are not displayed. I purposefully put in division by zero operation, and it didn't track it. I had to implement the OnException method of a controller, and send e-mails with error details which is very inconvenient. How can I solve this problem?

  I am choosing a JavaScript Framework to master and use extensively in all my future projects (mostly working with relational DATA, web services via AJAX and implementing complex rich client UIs). Now I am choosing between JQuery+JQueryUI, Dojo and ExtJS. What should I choose? 1st priority is power and functionality, 2nd priority is beauty and maintainability of code and ease of use, 3rd priority is flexibility and modularity, 4th priority is speed and size. IE compatibility hardly matters, I'd like it to be modern, legacy-free and standard-conformant.

• Mac OS X 10.5+ and POSIX

  Hello, I need to program an authentication module that has to work with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and at the same time needs to be POSIX-compliant. I read here: developer.apple.com/leopard/overview/osfoundations.html that since Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, Mac OS X is POSIX-compliant (to POSIX 1003.1), but working under MAC OS X 10.5 Leopard myself, I can't find any trace of my user name neither in /etc/passwd nor in its successor /etc/master.passwd, which is mentioned here: developer.apple.com/mac/library/DOCUMENTATION/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man5/passwd.5.html Instead it says in both files OpenDirectory Service is used, which should be OpenLDAP according to the OpenDirectoryService man-page. Is this still POSIX-compliant ? I guess not. I wonder how Mac OS X would handle my 100% POSIX-compliant code which depends on /etc/passwd ? I've found that the file appears to be the same as the reference (in size), but the archives refuse to extract. • SQL server virtual memory usage and perofrmance

  Hello, I have a very large DB used mostly for analytics. The performance overall is very sluggish. I just noticed that when running the query below, the amount of virtual memory used greatly exceed the amount of physical memory available. Currently, phsycial memory is 10GB (10238 bytes) where as the virtual memory returns significantly more 8388607 bytes. That seems really wrong, but I'm at a bit of a loss on how to proceed. • How to display configurable product in each color in Magento product listing?

  I have a configurable product which is available in many different colors and sizes. I want the configurable product to appear once for every color. My idea is to assign one simple product of the configurable product in every color to the category of the configurable product. Then I want to change the listing, so that the (colored) simple product links to it's master product (the configurable one). The other way would be, to just assign the configurable product to a category and then list it multiple times with different colors. But I think this would be to complicated.

• getting a gridview and dropdownlist to remember their states after navigate away and back button scr

  hi i have a page filling a gridview which is all working fine. the grid is basically the result of a search .. the filters for which are a number of dropdowns and a couple of textboxes the data from the grid and dropdowns are saved in the session and the whole page lives inside an updatepanel when i navigate away from the page (as it happens by clicking a link inside the grid) and then back button to it, all the droppers are back to their unselected values and the grid is nowhere to be seen.. i understand that this is because of the scriptmanager doesnt do 'standard' postbacks so the browser doesnt realise what has happened. however i have set the EnableHistory to true in the scriptmanager is there an easy way to get this to remember without dropping the updatepanel/scriptmanager? also to complicate things further the scriptmanger /updatepanel is actually in a master page. so not really sure how i can get the navigate bits to work in the scriptmanager.. clearly i am a bit confuised and any help that someone could provide would be happily received thanks nat

  I'm starting to do a small amount of development within my company. I'm intending to use Git for version control, and I'm interested to see what guidelines or standards people are using around version in their groups, similar to coding standards are often written within the group for the group. I'm assuming there will be things like; Commit often (at least every day/week/meeting etc) Release builds are always made from the master branch Prior to release, a new branch will be created for Testing and tagged as such. only bug fixes from this point onwards. The final release of this will be tagged as such and the bug fixes merged back into the trunk Each developer will have a public repo New features should get their own branch Obviously a lot of this will depend on what cvs you're using and how you've structured it.   I'm looking into developing a multi-tenant SaaS application, and I found several sites that describe a solid way to separate the data using tenantIDs and updateable views. e.g. This blog post It all hinges on the ability to have your user accounts authenticated from a master users table and then having their respective database connections use those user-specific credentials. This way, the views can pull the userid and map it to the tenantID to display that user's view. However, most PHP frameworks tend to be very static when it comes to database connections (stored in text config files). They appear to be at odds. Does anyone know: a) how to make CodeIgniter handle this gracefully? b) a different PHP framework that might?

There's always a missing paren somewhere. Should I use a proper parser, maybe a CFG?   I am attempting to drop and recreate a database from my CI setup. But I'm finding it difficult to automate the dropping and creation of the database, which is to be expected given the complexities of the db being in use. Sometimes the process hangs, errors out with "db is currently in use" or just takes too long. I don't care if the db is in use, I want to kill it and create it again. Does some one have a straight shot method to do this? alternatively does anyone have experience dropping all objects in the db instead of dropping the db itself? • An Actor "queue" ?

  In Java, to write a library that makes requests to a server, I usually implement some sort of dispatcher (not unlike the one found here in the Twitter4J library: http://github.com/yusuke/twitter4j/blob/master/twitter4j-core/src/main/java/twitter4j/internal/async/DispatcherImpl.java) to limit the number of connections, to perform asynchronous tasks, etc. The idea is that N number of threads are created. A "Task" is queued and all threads are notified, and one of the threads, when it's ready, will pop an item from the queue, do the work, and then return to a waiting state. If all the threads are busy working on a Task, then the Task is just queued, and the next available thread will take it. This keeps the max number of connections to N, and allows at most N Tasks to be operating at the same time. I'm wondering what kind of system I can create with Actors that will accomplish the same thing? Is there a way to have N number of Actors, and when a new message is ready, pass it off to an Actor to handle it - and if all Actors are busy, just queue the message?

  I'm curious whether many of us who do design or take design decisions have ever heard of this problem. I'm aware there are dangerous color combinations, like green + red. This is probably one of the most popular cases of color blindness. If you have green text on a red background and vice versa some people won't see anything. I've also seen in practice that green text on a blue background was not seen by one guy. What other color compositions should be avoided, and how often these cases are to be expected? Let us make some ranging by encounter probability who has the numbers. Addition: I've just remembered one very bad example that causes problems to just about everyone - blue text on a black background. It's unreadable for all intents and purposes. Never could understand what could possibly compel a web master to use this color combination...

• Separation of static and dynamic content in Java EE applications

  We work with IBM products and we typically use IBM Http Servers (read Apache) as a reverse proxy for our application servers. For performance reasons we serve static content (.gif, .jpg, .css, .html etc.) from our http servers, to ease the burden a bit from the application server. So far, we have to distribute files to http server and configure it manually (writing custom scripts at best.) The problem is the effort needed to keep everything in synch, especially when you need to update the app. Does any Java EE product support this “out of the box”? Is there a way to have application server do this automatically, like in cluster configuration for example, where master node is in charge of distributing the application to other nodes and for keeping everything in synch.

• How can I export images from SQL Server to a file on disk?

  I have a User table that has all of their avatars saved in an image field. I'd like to just take that out of the database and store it as a regular file on disk. I looked around and saw some code for textcopy, but that doesn't seem to be on my machine for some reason. Here is the code I wrote up anyway. Anyone know a way to get this done? • php mail function cannot send to [email protected] ??i

  I'm having trouble when sending emails thorough the mail() function. I have a script that works perfectly fine for an email address like [email protected] but when the first part of the email is something with a dot like [email protected] it doesn't work and returns this error : Warning: mail() [function.mail ]: SMTP server response: 554 : Recipient address rejected: Relay access denied in confirmed.php on line 119 I am using real email address but have changed it in the above example. Any thoughts - I'm not a php master but surely there is an easy way to send emails to address with a 2 part first section?? Thanks in advance Ali
