  • Ubuntu maverick username and password works with ssh but not with smb when I connect from MacOS 10.6.5

    I have an Ubuntu Maverick desktop that I can easily connect using ssh but when I want to see the shared directories using "go to server", MacOs connects to the Ubuntu machine and I can see the shared directories but when I enter my username and passord to get access it complains about me entering wrong username and/or password. Any ideas? What more information would you need to give me some advise? Is there a step by step how-to manual to get this done? thanks

  • How to get Ubuntu to perform better on an older computer?

    Ubuntu 9.1 runs quite slugglish on my old laptop from 2004. Slower than Windows XP that was on there. It has 512mb RAM and probably 1.2ghz (can't remember) CPU. I have turned off Visual Effects under Appearance Preferences. Are there any other tricks to get better performance, or do I just need a better computer to try Ubuntu? Thanks

    Following this guide: http://docs.mongodb.org/manual/tutorial/install-mongodb-on-ubuntu/ I ended up with mongodb 18 on my Ubuntu 10.04. I've just read the 2.2 mongodb release notes on upgrading and it says to just replace the binary. Would that be /usr/lib/mongodb/mongod ? It looks like the 2.2 tar has several files I might need to copy over: mongo, mongod, mongoexport, mongodump, mongofiles, mongoimport, mongorestore, mongos, xulwrapper Can I just copy and paste all of those over to replace the old versions of those files?

    I am on a 2010 Macbook Air connected to the web over wifi tethering on my Sprint Nexus S. I want to be able to host a few files using MAMP, but it seems that Sprint is running a NAT. When I query checkip.dyndns.org right now, it returns 68.27.228.75. However, trying to navigate to that IP fails (even though I do have MAMP's Apache running on port 80, as verified via loopback). When I whois 68.27.228.75, it appears to be a Sprint address, with NetName "SPRINTPCS" and OrgName "Sprint Nextel Corporation". So, is there some way I can circumvent Sprint's NAT to allow people to connect to my server that is running on a Nexus S Portable Wi-Fi hotspot?

  • MacOS X 10.6 Portable Home Directory sync fails due to FileSync agent crashing

    On one of our cleanly installed MacPro machines running MacOS X 10.6.6 connected to our MacOS X 10.6.6 Server, syncing data using Portable Home Directories fails. It seems to be due to the filesync agent crashing during the home sync. We get -41 and -8026 errors, which we are suspecting are indicating that there is too much data or filesync agent can't read the files.   • Change the update channel in Portable Thunderbird?

    I think it needs some explanation How to update a TB Portable installation to beta or aurora. I tried to change the preferences in about:config: update.channel to aurora but that had no effect. Then I edited ThunderbirdPortable3\App\thunderbird\defaults\pref\channel-prefs.js and restarted TB. There I got the message in the Help screen, that I am on update channel aurora, which seems fine. Still: the update downloaded Thunderbird 29 pre beta and tried to install but ended with the message that it couldnt be installed due to patch problems: Das Update konnte nicht installiert werden (Patch-Anwendung fehlgeschlagen) I tried this again with the channel "nightly" and got the same error. (On channel "beta" there seem to be no newer version than in the channel "release".) How can I change my installation to channel aurora and update it?

  • Cannot connect to MySQL with JDBC - Connection Timeout - Ubuntu 9.04

    I am running Ubuntu and am ultimately trying to connect Tomcat to my MySQL database using JDBC. It has worked previously but after a reboot the instance now fails to connect. Both Tomcat 6 and MySQL 5.0.75 are on the same machine Connection string: jdbc:mysql:///localhost:3306 I can connect to MySQL on the command line using the mysql command The my.cnf file is pretty standard (Available on request) has bind address: 127.0.0.1 I cannot Telnet to the MySQL port despite netstat saying MySQL is listening I have one IpTables rule to forward 80 - 8080 and no firewall I'm aware of. I'm pretty new to this and I'm not sure what else to test. I don't know whether I should be looking in etc/interfaces and if I did what to look for. It's weird because it used to work but after a reboot it's down so I must have changed something.... :). I realise a timeout indicates the server is not responding and I assume it's because the request isn't actually getting through. I installed MySQL via apt-get and Tomcat manually.   • input / output error, drives randomly refusing to read / write

    I have an issue with one of our servers running Ubuntu 10.04, it is running BackupPC and collects backups from various machines / servers around the building. On the 8th minute (12:08, 12:18, 12:28 etc) the backups are transferred to an external hard drive, we have three and rotate one drive for another everyday. The problem we are having is we are randomly experiencing input / output errors, when this happens you cannot read / write to the drive, it hasn't unmounted so I can cd to the mount point /media/backup1. You see we have three drives all formatted to ext2, on two of them we were getting I/O errors frequently, I cam back to Quamis' answer and discovered the fsck command, so ran it against the problems drives: fsck /dev/sdb1 This found and fixed a load of problems on the drive, most probably caused by power outages / unsafe removal of drives etc, as the drives are in the xt2 format they aren't journalled and thus aren't protected against such issues. Drives are now working beautifully, thanks all! :D

    My Ubuntu hangs at boot with message "Attached scsi removable disk". When I boot with param acpi=off, system boots fine. I'm booting from harddrive, not from usb device. I managed to locate source of this problem to the external card reader & usb hub, into which I have connected external keyboard and mouse. If i disconnect it (whole card reader & usb hub), system boots fine. Could you suggest any way to boot successfully without adding acpi=off or disconnecting hub&reader before booting?     I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 alongside windows 7. It was working fine but now when I try to boot with ubuntu after the operating system choice screen I get this.     I installed Ubuntu 10.10 today and have had mouse problem since. Symptoms: At some arbitrary point in time (frequency: 2-3 times per hour), the mouse and keyboard stops working for ever(may be). I start System monitor, I found out network was shutdown just before mouse freeze. Some time my keyboard keep typing one key.     I want to setup a headless Ubuntu 12.04 machine as a print server. The printer is Canon IR2520 which needs UFRII driver. Printer is connected to the network via Ethernet. After searching a lot about weather printer can be directly accessed as a SMB share, I decided to make Ubuntu server as print server. The Windows clients send the print jobs to the server and the server will send those jobs via Ethernet to the printer. I followed this how-to for installing the driver. The driver compilation fails with the error that gtk 2.0 package is not available. I cannot have gtk on a headless server, it is very necessary that it should not have any graphical/desktop packages. What would be the solution for installing UFRII on Ubuntu 12.04 Server.

    I'm not able to install the release ubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386 on the laptop below: Sony Vaio VGN-FE21H CPU: Intel Core Duo T2300 1.66GHz Memory: 2GB DDR2 533MHz HDD: 100GB Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 7400 256MB I'm using the ISO "ubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386.iso" burned into a DVD. I know the ISO is OK because I used it to successfully install on Virtualbox. Live DVD boots and runs OK, but I cannot install from it or directly from the boot menu. The installation goes through all the steps until the final part where is asked the Name, Name of PC and password. The problem is in the next step where it should start copying files and present some screens and features of Ubuntu. In this part the installation just close without any error message. If I am running the installation inside the live DVD it closes and returns to the home screen of the Live. If I am running straight from the boot it closes the graphic interface and restarts the PC. Does anybody know or faced the same problem?

MORE DETAILS: UltraVNC client running on a Windows computer can login and shows the Ubuntu desktop, and controls the Ubuntu mouse to do things, but the VNC client view at the Windows computer does NOT show any changes to the display at the Ubuntu desktop, only the original desktop view at the time of VNC client login. UPDATE I solved it by following the askubuntu post: "VNC session very slow in 12.04 compared to older versions", which said to do this: gsettings set org.gnome.Vino disable-xdamage true ..and it worked. But should I be concerned about the error messages?

While some people say, there are heavy problems by installing Ubuntu on a Mac Mini, such as components (like Sound card, graphic card, …) don't work very well, others say, that it should work perfectly fine. I figured out that installing UBNTU on a Mac isn't as easy (can't just downld the .iso and use unetboot, …) as it is on a PC. So, is it possible to install Ubuntu 12.10 on a Mac Mini 2009 (end), so everything works well?

    Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit installed DVD-RW recorder PATA as SCSI. My DVD-RW recorder is in /dev/sr0 as SCSI. I opened Disk Management and my IDE PATA drive is installed as SCSI. I can't use this drive because it hangs computer (I need press reset button on CPU to back to Ubuntu). What do I do for the drive back to function with the correct drive (IDE mode)? With the first kernel version of the Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit was all functioning. Help me please.

  • Can't install wine (or ia32-libs) in Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit

    As already pointed out here, people seems to have issues with installing wine in the latest version of Ubuntu. I'm suspecting this only happens with 64 bit users. For example, when trying to install wine, wine1.4, wine1.4:i386, wine1.5, wine1.5:i386, ia32-libs or ia32-libs:i386 with apt-get, I get a lot of dependency errors. Doing a sudo apt-get -f install doesn't seem to do the trick, neither does using aptitude. The errors I get is normally that the packages depend on some :i386 package, but installing those manually doesn't work either because they also have dependency issues (isn't APT supposed to do this automatically?!). I also downloaded CrossOver today and tried installing the .deb manually, but the dependency issues show up there as well. When running sudo apt-get -f install after trying to install the CrossOver .deb, apt-get wants to purge the following packages: ia32-crossover intel-gpu-tools libdrm-nouveau2 libgl1-mesa-dri libva-x11-1 ubuntu-desktop vlc xorg xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-intel xserver-xorg-video-modesetting xserver-xorg-video-openchrome xserver-xorg-video-radeon xserver-xorg-video-vmware What I've tried so far (and didn't work): Installing synaptic, reloading my repositories, searching for ia32 and installing ia32-libs. Using Ubuntu Software Center to install Wine and ia32-libs. Using apt-get and aptitude to install all the differend varieties of the wine packages, both with and without the :i386 and -amd64 suffixes in package names. Disabling the universe and multiverse repos, run a sudo apt-get update and then re-enable them again. Boot a newly downloaded Ubuntu 12.10 x64 live USB and try to install all the different packages there. What I haven't tried (yet): Boot a newly downloaded Ubuntu 12.10 x32 image and try to install wine there (I'm just guessing that will work). Reinstall Ubuntu.   • Attempted to dual boot with Windows and now can only run Ubuntu

    Very recently, I decided to attempt to dual boot Ubuntu with my already installed windows 8. Everything worked perfectly, I manually set up disk partitions (this is all on 1 hard drive), and it loaded up Ubuntu fine. HOWEVER, now when I try to load up my computer it only has 2 options in the boot menu and both just load up Windows (both were something related to hard disk). I also can only boot from legacy hard disk things. (I already only was able to aside from my USB that I installed Windows from) The Windows files are still accessible from Ubuntu, but I cannot just load Windows. There is no option to. I also don't have the 2 buttons for each operating system I was expecting. I can only select the thing to load from BIOS. So, my question is, how do I load the Windows partition on my hard drive? I'm sorry if I'm a bit clueless I am just new to both Linux and dual-booting.
