• ESXi Static IP setup with gateway on different subnet

  I've got an ESXi server that I'm trying to assign a static IP to. I'm having trouble setting the gateway because (I presume) the gateway is on a different subnet. I've been able to accomplish this task on normal Linux servers by doing the following: route add 172.50.99.254 eth0 route add -net default gw 172.50.99.254 eth0 Now using the GUI config tools for ESXi I've tried setting the following IP: 172.50.5.151 Netmask: 255.255.252.0 Gateway: 172.50.99.254 The gateway does not stick, and when I try to add the gateway manually using esxcfg-route it says it has no route to the gateway IP. How can I get this static IP set correctly? (I don't have any control over the network setup).

• How can I share Configuration Settings across multiple projects in Visual Studio?

  Ok I know this may be a design issue, so I would love to have remarks on that as well. I have a Visual Studio web application solution. I have three projects as UserInterface, BusinessLogic and DataAccess. I had to store some user defined settings and I created configSections in the config file. I access these configSections through classes which inherit from .NET's ConfigurationSection base class. So in short for every project I had a separate configSection and for that corresponding configSection I had a class in that project inheriting from ConfigurationSection to access the config section settings. This works all sweet. But the problem arises if there is any setting which I need to use across multiple projects. So If I need to use a setting defined in UserInterface project configSection in, let say, BusinessLogic project I have to actually make a copy of that setting in the BusinessLogic's configSection. This ends up having the same setting copied across multiple configSections. Isn't this a bit too redundant?

  So I'm setting up a shared hosting with Apache, PHP, MySQL and the biggest question mark is how to do with PHP, since there is a million options out there how to configure it securely. The plan is: Chroot for MySQL (built in support for chroot) Chroot for Apache (mod_security) Each user executing their PHP-scripts as their own user (see below) Set open_basedir Disable all "evil" php-functions (allow_url_fopen, system, exec, and so on) Ive looked at suexec and suphp but they seems very slow; http://blog.stuartherbert.com/php/2007/12/18/using-suexec-to-secure-a-shared-server/ http://blog.stuartherbert.com/php/2008/01/18/using-suphp-to-secure-a-shared-server/ So I've looked some more and found some other solutions: apache2-mpm-itk + mod_php(?) mod_fcgid + php-fpm mod_fastcgi + php-fpm Ive tried a simple setup with mod_fastcgi + php-fpm and it seems to work, runs as correct user and so on, but the protection against directory traveling is still open_basedir(?) One solution for that could be to use php-fpm's chroot option, but that causes a lot of other issues like domain name resolver does not work sending mail does not work Tips?

• Visual Studio: How to override the default "Build Action" for certain extension types per project or solution?

  I'm serving my asp.net mvc views from many assemblies and copying views to the main application on post-build event. This works, however, I realized, that when I change something in view and just hit F5, changes are not included. What I have to do to see changes is to: save, build<- explicitly clicking, and then hit F5. However, it's pretty annoying solution. I discovered that setting Build action to "Embedded Resource" on view solves the problem as well, however other devs may not remember that they have to do this after adding every view to the solution. Is there a way to override the default build action for certain file extensions, such as: *.aspx, *.ascx in project or (better) in solution ? What I've found is an ability to add this setting globally, per machine, but I do not want to do that (link: http://blog.andreloker.de/post/2010/07/02/Visual-Studio-default-build-action-for-non-default-file-types.aspx) Any ideas ?

• Is there a tool for detecting Visual Studio projects with duplicate GUIDs?

  When creating new Visual Studio C++ projects there're two ways: either run the wizard and then painfully change all the necessary settings in the project or just copy and existing project, rename everything there and add files into it. The second variant is great except that the .vcproj file stores a project GUID. This GUID is used to track project dependencies and the startup project when two or more projects are in one solution. If any two projects in one solution have identical GUIDs problems can arise - dependencies are lost and the startup prject is reset on next solution reload. Clearly there's a need for a tool that would scan the filesystem subtree and detect projects with identical GUIDs here. Before I start writing one ... is there a ready tool for that?

• How can I create a shortcut to uninstall MyApplication using the Visual Studio Installer?

  I have created an installer for MyApplication using the Visual Studio Installer (VSI) Setup Project. I would like to create a shortcut in the user's Start Menu to uninstall MyApplication (instead of having to go through the Add/Remove Programs control panel). I cannot simply create a batch/script file to run the command "msiexec /uninstall {MyGUID}" because, although it does succeed in running the uninstaller, when the uninstall completes the program folder (wherever the user has chosen to install the app) does not get deleted. It stays empty. How can I create a shortcut that can uninstall the program but not leave behind an empty program folder?

• Optimal Disk Setup for OLTP SQL Server

  We have a high transaction (lots of reads and writes) database server (running SQL 2005) that is currently set up with a RAID 1 OS partition (C:) and a RAID 5 data/log/tempdb partition (D:). The C: has 2 drives and the D: has 4 drives. The server has around 300 databases ranging from 10MB to 2GB in size. I have been reading up on best practices for partioning the disks, but would like some opinions on our setup since we are so limited in the number of disks. It seems like RAID 10 is popular, but I dont think we could use it with only 6 total disks to work with. Thanks.   What I need to setup BBS nowadays? I'm thinking of BBBS or PCBoard (no telnet! too new technology). What I've thinked so far, I'd need: virtual machine which runs DOS and hook that virtual COM-port to somekind of virtual VoIP modem software somehow (is there any?). How you can call to it across internet? Can you use HyperTerminal straight with that virtual/real modem? Or will VoIP just garble the modem data and nothing will work?

• Storage setup for large files

  I need to store over 200TB of data (all types, biggest being video files) and be able to access it over a local network. The files will be accessed for editing or searches. I don't need versioning, but a setup that would keep me safe from harddrive failures would be nice. Right now the content is on different harddrives, some external drives, some regular. I don't exclude the possibility of buying new/extra drives if necessary. If they will ever be exposed to the web, it wont be to the public, but just a couple of people. I have no idea what to buy to make this happen. I see some NAS solutions over the internet like this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/a/2266043.p?id=1218317764591&skuId=2266043 but the storage is not enough, plus it doesn't seem to be scalable.   I need to use Visual Studio 2005 (C++) on my new laptop - a Sony Vaio with Windows 7 64bit.. I don't need to develop for a 64bit environment, my work is all 32bit, so how can I be sure that I can still develop/debug/test for a 32bit target environment using VS2005 on a 64bit machine....? What's the best option: 1) Just install VS2005 on Windows 7 64bit and carry on.. (suspect problems with 64bit runtime libs..?) 2) Dual boot the laptop with Windows XP 32bit. 3) Run some kind of Virtual Machine with Windows XP in it... • Can domain "masking" be setup in BIND\cPanel

  I am supporting a client, let's say he has the domain "acme.com". He registered with GoDaddy and set the name servers to point to his crappy hostgator shared account. He uses cPanel on the hostgator account to set up his subdomains. Is it possible to setup some kind of domain masking so that when someone connects to "application.acme.com", it really forwards to "cloud-solution-provider.com". I mean the actual domain "cloud-solution-provider.com" because it resolves to different IPs based upon geolocation. For this reason I can't just set application.acme.com to point to the IP that cloud-solution-provider.com resolves to. I want the ability for a user to RDP to "application.acme.com" and be sent to the desktop served by "cloud-solution-provider.com", whatever that IP may be. Perhaps I can have GoDaddy be the nameserver? I have a feeling this would break Hostgator since there is a website at acme.com and shop.acme.com

  We are using Visual Studio 2008 and would like to know if there is a way to create a (keyboard or toolbar) shortcut for the 'View in Browser'-command, but with a specific page from a specific (loaded) project. We always start testing/debugging our app from "Somepage.aspx" from "Project-x". I would like to make a shortcut that does 'View in Browser' with this specific page/file, from this specific project. So even if I am currently working on another file in another project (from the same solution) it should still work... Anybody know if this is possible, and if so, how this can be achieved? Thanks!   I am running linux based server (centos 6.0) with cpanle and WHM, I have critical website running with a chat server which uses a openfire as the chat server backend server, i have monitored last few weeks this service crashes quite often, i have no way of knowing that, and i have to wait till the next day to restart the server. (and this can only be fixed by using server reboot as its got to do with some java memory problem) is there a way i can setup a monitoring service to the server and if this service goes down server itself will reboot ? is this something possible or is there a better way to overcome this problem ?

• How can I include .pdf files when I publish but not in a search and replace in visual studio?

  More specifically my problem is if I include a pdf in my project and set its build action to content so it gets copied to the server when I publish, is there a way to exclude it from visual studios search and replace feature. Would a post build action be a solution to this? I just don't want anybody to do a global search and replace in my project and mess up the pdfs...   I am looking for a utility to move windows around on a multiscreen (usualy dual screen) setup. So with a keybord shortcut (or mousclick) I would like to send a windows to another monitor. I am using this functionality a lot when I give presentations. I'll lookup something on my mainscreen and then send the window to the screen or beamer where others can see it. Its also useful when working or when I want to send a screen from my computer to the TV screen that is hooked up to the computer. I know two solutions for a) Windows b) Mac OS but none yet for Linux. I'll post my windows and Mac OS solutions as answer and would be interested in other opinions.

I know about the netsh advfirewall firewall command, but I would like very much to have this program allowed at install time (the Click Once deployment). How can I add this command to execute as a post install command, exectuing as Administrator - i.e. The person doing the install does not have to execute the netsh advfirewall command separately or does not have to go to the Firewall and manually add the program in the Allowed list. I cannot find an area in Publish in Visual Studio 2010 to insert a post install command line execution.

  I have a CentOS 6 box with LVM setup and one of the PVs is a USB disk (I know). One of them is getting the error: Oct 30 10:57:07 alpha01 kernel: lost page write due to I/O error on dm-3 Oct 30 10:57:07 alpha01 kernel: Buffer I/O error on device dm-3, logical block 4 Which is causing problems with all of the LVs on it. pvs shows the PV as unknown device. I can ls to the logical volumes and they show up in lvdisplay, but first I get a bunch of IO errors. I made sure the cables are secure between the USB drive. What should I do to get this back up and running for the meanwhile? Should I unmount each LV and run an fsck.ext4 on each one like fsck.ext4 -y /dev/vg1/lv_logvolname ?

  Hi, here is the situation, i'm developping a Browser Helper Object (BHO) in C++ with Visual Studio 2008, and i learned that the memory wasn't managed the same way in Debug mode than in Release mode. So when i run my BHO in debug mode, internet explorer 8 works just fine and i got no erros at all, the browser stays alive forever, but as soon as i compile it in release mode, i got no errors, no message, nothing, but after 5 minutes i can see through the task manager that internet explorer instances are just eating memory and then the browser just stop responding every time. Please, I really need some hint on how to get a feedback on what could be the error. I heard that, often it was happening because of memory mismanagement. I need a software that just grab a memory dump or something when iexplorer crashes to help me find the problem. Any help is appreciated, I'll be looking for responses every single days, thank you.

  Let me explain my szenario: I have a linux server A. A is reachable in a VPN. So if I am connected to the VPN over Internet I can successfully ping A. Server A is connected to a Router B. Router B has a local ipv6 address and there are resources (each of them with a local ipv6 address) connected to Router B. After I am connected to VPN, I am able to use ssh to have access over A. Now I can use the ping6 command to ping the Router B or one of its connected resources. This works fine. The ping fails if I try to ping router B on my computer. Overview: My Computer -- VPN -- Server A(ipv4) -- Router B(ipv6) -- Ressource A(ipv6) On resource A runs for example a HTTP-Server. My question is: How can I access Resource A (for example with HTTP) on my to VPN connected computer? Is it possible? Should I setup a tunnel device? Sorry for this inexpertly explanation, but I am new to network stuff!

  Programtically get the Wireless lan config of a machine and use netsh to setup new profile I am having trouble getting the netsh command to set the ssid of a new card. I installed the drivers and plugged it in. I see in ipconfig it says the "media is disconnected" (fair enough). I then send the following command netsh wlan connect name=profile1 ssid=myNetwork interface="Wireless Network Connection 2" problem is I get an error "There is no profile "profile1" assigned to the specified interface. What is a profile for a wireless card? What should I set it to? How Can I get my SSID set and connected for the card.
